Parent/Caregiver Award

This evening Larry and I are receiving the parent/caregiver award from the Long Island Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Larry and I humbly accept this on behalf of all the parents who daily do this caregiving of persons with special needs. While this caregiving is exhausting it also brings much joy into our lives.

Memory

Memory is an interesting phenomenon. In brain injury patients short-term memory is often poor while long-term memory remains intact. You have an identity but in a way you're stuck in the past. Michelle has days where she's very frustrated with her memory but most of the time she's very happy. What's it like to not be able to remember where you were this morning?

Stephen Hawking

Yesterday in the NY Times Stephen Hawking was quoted as saying, "My advice to other disabled people would be, concentrate on things your disability doesn't prevent you doing well, and don't regret the things it interferes with. Don't be disabled in spirit, as well as physically." Good advice for all of us.

Mothers of Children with Special Needs

Happy Mother's Day to all those mothers who are taking care of children with special needs. In a society that puts little value on caregiving, you not only give this care daily but show all of us what unconditional love looks like. Thanks.

Congresswoman Giffords

As we cheer on Congresswoman Giffords let's not forget all those men, women, and children (especially those members of the armed forces) who do not have the necessary rehabilitation to make the recovery that she has. Rehabilitation does work but it costs money – money that is not provided by most insurance companies.

You might want to check out this link http://bit.ly/agWA5L. This is an article that deals with the difficult question as to whether or not health care professionals need to override their consciences when dealing with their patients' requests.
