Top 50 craft beer breweries ranking announced in 2024.This is the location of Great Lakes Brewing Company
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Great Lakes Brewing Company has inched up its ranking of America’s top craft and integrated breweries, according to annual statistics released Tuesday.
Founded in 1988, Ohio’s first craft brewery is the 17th largest craft brewery in the United States, according to the Brewers Association, which represents America’s small and independent craft breweries. It is the 27th largest brewery overall. Each is one spot higher than last year’s ranking for Cleveland Brewery.
The top five craft breweries in 2023 remain unchanged compared to 2022.
1. Yuengling and Son – Pottsville, Pennsylvania.
2. Boston Beer Co. – Boston and Milton, Delaware.
3. Sierra Nevada Brewing Company – Chico, California.
4. Duvel Moortgat USA – Paso Robles, California. Kansas City, Missouri. Cooperstown, New York.
5. Gambrinus – Shiner, Texas. Berkeley, California.
“We expect the number of breweries and employment to continue to grow,” said Bart Watson, vice president of strategy and chief economist at the Brewers Association. Additionally, the closing rate remains “relatively low at around 4%,” he said.
Watson addressed media and industry members ahead of an industry address scheduled for next week’s Craft Brewers Conference in Las Vegas. Mr. Watson’s comments are in somewhat contrast to his speech in Cleveland a year ago, which at the time presented a more dire outlook.
Mr Watson said a key aspect of Tuesday’s comments was that product variety/diversification within a brewery’s portfolio was not included in the numbers. This is an important point because many breweries are adding hard seltzers, ciders, and other products. It is said that 650 breweries have distillation licenses.
“Breweries are looking for opportunities there, and I think we’re seeing more breweries trying to become that beverage company. Some of that is driven by consumer demand. We have a diverse customer base that wants different categories of drinks.”
Other findings
• Among Ohio’s top 50 craft breweries, Rhinegeist and BrewDog both showed gains. Cincinnati’s Rhinegeist is No. 22 (up from No. 23), and Canal Winchester-based BrewDog’s U.S. operations are No. 36 (up from No. 38). Among all breweries, Rhinegeist ranks 32nd this year, and last year he was 33rd. BrewDog is 46th this year, moving him up two spots from 2023. Both breweries have retail distribution of multiple products in Northeast Ohio.
• The number of operating craft breweries continued to increase in 2023, reaching a record high of 9,683. During the year, 495 breweries opened and 418 closed. According to the group, the closing rate remains relatively low at about 4%.
• The brewing industry will continue to maintain economic importance: With the addition of breweries and what BA sees as a “continued shift towards hospitality-focused business models,” craft breweries will continue to grow in 2023. The company employed 191,421 people, an increase of 1.1%.
• Volume share of the overall craft beer market increased from 13.1% to 13.3%. This is the proportion of craft beer in the total market. This means that more than 86% of the beer consumed in the United States comes from major beer companies such as Anheuser-Busch and Molson Coors, or from major foreign brands.
• Yuengling and Athletic Brewing Co., the latter a non-alcoholic beverage company based in Milford, Conn., posted solid results. Products from both breweries are available in Northeast Ohio.
• Regarding trends in homebrew shops, Watson said, “I think there will continue to be challenges in that market,” citing “reduced sales.” He said that may be due to changing consumption patterns, with more people buying online, and increased competition and product diversification at homebrew stores.
He says brewers are getting much better at targeting specific products and styles.
“The concept of what craft is has changed a lot. We don’t define craft beer. We try to define craft producers and be inclusive of the beer they’re making,” Watson said. he said, adding that some consumers are seeking beers with higher alcohol content.
“The biggest change in IPA is the shift to DIPA/Imperial. …IPA is one of those markets where you see waves over time. We certainly seem to have seen a shift away from Hazy (IPA). , that is difficult to quantify.”
Watson was more optimistic than pessimistic in many areas, but noted challenges in certain areas.
“Craft beer is emerging in other parts of the world,” he says. “I think American craft beer still has a very strong position globally.”
But he added: “Given the increased competition globally, it’s probably more difficult than it was five or 10 years ago to ship to markets like the UK, where there are so many great local breweries. There will be,” he added.
Other challenges include draft sales and on-premises sales, which “have become an established pattern,” he said. “Am I still worried about the future of draft beer? Yes, very much. … I think that’s one of the things that craft brewers need to continue to work on.”
While the industry has seen a slowdown in sales at brick-and-mortar stores, taprooms and brewpubs are “generally strong,” he said.
State statistics are expected to be released in the near future, but it’s unlikely that Ohio’s position will change much from a year ago. Ohio is home to more than 420 breweries, consistently producing beer that ranks in the top 10 in volume.

Brewers Association releases list of top 50 largest craft beer companies in 2023

The Brewers Association, the trade group representing America’s small and independent breweries, has released its annual survey of America’s craft beer industry production. As part of its annual publication, the association also ranks America’s largest craft breweries by production, a list the industry looks to to identify trends in beer.
In 2023, the number of breweries rose to a record high of 9,683, directly employing 191,421 people. Despite a tough year for the craft beer industry (total production down 1.0% from 2022), brewery openings outnumbered closures, but the opening rate has slowed dramatically in recent years. Craft beer commands a premium price, so sales increased in 2023 despite a slight decrease in volume.
“I think these numbers show that while craft beer isn’t experiencing the tremendous growth it was five or six years ago, the industry is on track,” the Brewers Association said. Chief Economist Bart Watson said. Looking at the changes in the list of the largest craft breweries, Watson notes that “a lot of breweries are coming together and growing.” There are also some breweries that are doing something new and different that seems to be an effective strategy for achieving growth. ”

Craft Latino celebrates 60th anniversary of Fania Records
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the legendary New York label Fania Records, one of the most important Latin labels in the world, both musically and culturally.
To celebrate Fania’s accomplishments at this special milestone, Craft Latino has released over 12 remastered 180 gram vinyl reissues and over 20 remastered digital albums, many of which It will debut in high-resolution digital. Other offerings include single box sets, as well as curated playlists, artist spotlights, live events in New York, Los Angeles, Miami and London, and a variety of other content throughout the year.
Kicking off a year-long celebration, Willy Colon and Hector Laveau’s epic salsa duo’s 1970 masterpiece La Grand Fuga (The Big Break) has been remastered. It has been re-released and is now available.

Grimes’ Coachella difficulties show technology shouldn’t replace craft
Coachella is full of news and surprises. But beyond No Doubt’s amazing reunion, Blur’s bewildered reaction to the crowd, and Lauryn Hill’s appearance on his son YG Marley’s set, one particular moment stands out. No, the topic of discussion centers on the number of “technical mishaps” surrounding Grimes and her DJ sets. She repeatedly apologized to the packed Sahara Tent crowd, which erupted into angry cries at times, and even apologized after her set. Mistakes happen, and I’ve been to a few DJ sets where things got messed up and I had to think on the fly. That’s just the name of the game. Not everything will be perfect. The difference in this situation is that you are completely reliant on “outsourcing” the Rekordbox BPM process and having someone else set up your tracklist. This clashed with Grimes’ inability to match tempo. That could have been avoided if she had listened to the set beforehand.
This speaks to a more important question regarding the relationship between technology and over-reliance on methods of artistic process. For example, Pro Tools reduces the complexity of music production and was once the standard for mixing. This made it easier to remove gross inefficiencies in my compositions and made them sound better. This problem occurs when you rely on something like Pro Tools so much that it takes away the natural creative flow from the musical process. If the vocalizations of your Pro Tools-powered songs are artificial, it will show up in your live performance (if you choose not to lip-sync to a backing track, which is your privilege, of course). DJing requires you to be in tune with the mood of the crowd, identify the type of crowd and the music/tempo that gets the best response, and act accordingly. The auto-sync button is provided for “emergency” purposes and there is no replacement for this button. Of course, you can learn how to program how a violin sounds in your computer, but a more valuable method is to learn the instrument.
In the world of technology, there is a push to integrate AI apps and components into the creative process. That’s because there’s this idea that all creativity is algorithmic, that creativity is typed into a prompt and spit out like a Pepsi machine. In fact, it’s because of those 10,000 hours that groups like Justice are so adept at recreating sets in new ways from songs they’ve heard before. It’s tempting to jump the line because you feel entitled to it – but you’re only entitled to the results of the work you put in. Grimes should know this, since she’s an artist with five albums under her belt. It takes a huge amount of time and energy, as does the DJ who has to think about what the Bonnaroo crowd likes, as opposed to the smaller parties in Ibiza. It’s just a respect for the audience. It’s your gratitude to them that determines how much you’ll be hooked. I don’t particularly like people bombing, so I hope Grimes’ words about everything being better in the second weekend are true. More importantly, it’s a warning that technology is best used as an aid, not a shortcut.

2024 Smithsonian Craft Show | Hill Rugs

A sure sign of spring is the annual juried craft show sponsored by the Smithsonian Women’s Commission. This year’s performance dates are May 1st to May 5th.
All net proceeds go back to the Smithsonian Institution’s incredible commitment to science, art, and community projects at its 19 museums, research centers, and the National Zoo.
In 2014, SWC launched a program to recognize late-life artists who have reached the pinnacle of their art. The eligibility criteria for the Visionary Award is that the artist has been exhibited in a major museum or important collection.
Past recipients of the Visionary Award include Albert Paley, Wendall Castle, Faith Ringgold, Dale Chihuly, and Toots Zinski. These amazing artists set the standard for future award winners. This year’s winners are all glass artists, and their work is amazing. Smithsonian Institution Director Ronnie Bunch will present the awards on the show’s opening night.
Dan Daly
The first recipient is Dan Daly. He combines sculpture. A deft hand of painting and storytelling born from work in Venini, Italy, Cristalellis Dome in Paris, and Waterford, Ireland.
Pay particular attention to the delightful characters depicted in pate de vert. Pâté de Verre is a kind of sanded or frosted finish that harkens back to his days working on the dome glasses of Paris. Not only are these works fun to look at, but the technical aspects of their execution are also exceptional.

Judith Shakter
The second recipient is Judith Schechter, an artist who creates stained glass. Her technique involves layering what she calls “flash glass,” or pre-colored glass sheets, with layers of other colors, most of which are carved with engraving tools. Her intricate paintings, carefully carved into layers of glass, are set in frames to tell a story.
The stories can be fanciful, such as “Swarm,” a long, undulating piece of flowers, birds, and butterflies, or heart-rending pieces like Medusa’s Raft, layered with graphic pieces in sepia and gray tones. there is. Uses glass to produce a soft depth of color field.

Norwood Viviano
Many years ago, the Women’s Committee wanted to recognize mid-career artists who would eventually reach the status of visionaries. These young and collectible artists have a safe place at our shows. We call this award “Delphi” and it will be presented to Norwood Viviano by SWC President Trudi Hearn.
Norwood is currently an associate professor at Grand Valley State University in Michigan. His work, as well as his other works, can be found in museum collections such as the Renwick Art Museum, the Chrysler Museum of Art, and the Corning Museum of Art.
Norwood presents kiln-cast glass in dense sculptures depicting urban scenes. These usually depict cities with a history of manufacturing, and the carvings show changing landscapes. Although they are monochromatic, they come to life with the refraction of light.

Innisfil’s Arts completes Listowel Cyclones fold craft

For 18-year-old Riley Ertz, hockey isn’t just his favorite sport, it’s in his blood.
Aerts’ grandfather was a professional hockey player in the Netherlands, and his father’s cousin played in the NHL.
“I loved the game ever since I was little,” he said.
Ertz told Innisfil Today that he started skating at age 2, joined the team at age 4, and was never forced to practice or play.
Being a goaltender for the Listowel Cyclones of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (GOJHL) B Loop, Ertz requires continued dedication and love for the game. “We’re on the ice almost every day, especially now during the playoffs.”
Ertz and his teammates won the division championship, known as the Cherry Cup, on Friday, April 12th.
“It was a big moment for our team,” he said.
The Listowel Cyclones will compete in a tournament that begins with a round robin of the top three teams in the league. This will be Ertz’s first time competing in the Sutherland Cup. The Sutherland Cup is named after James Thomas Sutherland, whom the GOJHL calls the “Father of Ontario Hockey.”

“It was a huge honor to win with my goalie partner (Dixon Grimes),” he said. “I don’t want to do it with anyone else.”
Ertz had 18 wins and five shutouts in 25 games.
“The defense helped me out,” he said. “You have to have a good team in front of you.”

On March 25th, Urakita Craft Studio’s X (formerly Twitter) account released a line of wooden barrel jockey mugs based on the 2024 anime series “Delicious in Dungeon.” In a tweet, the company indicated that four types of mugs with anime logos are available for purchase. Federal funds support MARTA housing construction, mixed-use projects along bus rapid transit routes
A $750,000 federal grant will help spur affordable housing and other new development in a southwest Atlanta community that has historically been starved of investment. This includes major changes with the Oakland City MARTA station on the South Line.
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) provided funding to enable MARTA to envision a grand vision for transit-centric development along the Campbellton Road bus rapid transit corridor, scheduled for completion in 2028.
MARTA last year completed an ambitious master plan for redevelopment around the corridor, and the FTA grant gives regional transit authorities “an opportunity to address food insecurity, affordable housing, and unprotected economic development.” By identifying the plan, you will be empowered to advance the ideas outlined in the plan. , education, green space, stormwater management, transportation accessibility and more,” the press release said.
MARTA plans to use the FTA grant in part to find ways to develop key elements of its vision: 12 acres of vacant land it owns next to the Oakland City train station, which includes a church and several townhouses, and a number of adjacent single-family homes.
