NCW Woodshop fosters community through craft
Written by Quinn Propst
Ward media reporter
CASHMERE – Jonathan Clark, owner of NCW Woodshop, a community-based wood shop in Cashmere, wants to build a community of people who come and work with him.
NCW Woodshop offers classes and mentorship for all skill levels and also offers several membership options.
“It’s like a gym membership, but it’s a woodshop membership,” Clark said.
The shop has two membership levels. One option gives members 5 hours of shop time each month, and the unlimited bundle allows members to shop during business hours. Both options include free safety and orientation classes and his 15% discount on classes.
There is also a drop-in fee of $30 per day.
Clark and his wife Jennifer bought a home in Leavenworth in 2017, but it needed some work. So Clark began setting up shop in Leavenworth. However, the couple lived in Kirkland at the time, so the store wasn’t very convenient.
After the pandemic, Clark took a woodworking class in Seattle and really enjoyed it. He then began looking for available store space in Seattle and found a community membership woodworking shop.
When Clark moved to Wenatchee in 2021, he wanted to own a lumber mill but didn’t have the space at home. His wife Jennifer suggested starting something similar in the Wenatchee area.
“One day, my wife and I were driving through town, and she said to me, “We should open a lumber mill like they did in Seattle. That was a great idea.” I thought,” he said. “And here we are. So we started it and have been slowly tweaking here, tweaking there, trying to find the right mix of things.”
Clark opened in October 2023.
The store holds popular charcuterie board making classes on Mondays. We also offer DIY With Us, Picture Framing Classes, Basic Woodworking, and Basic Woodworking for Youth.
But one of the most popular classes is Power Tools 101, which is just for women.
It was the first time Ms. Clark taught a class on her own. For the second time, Clark said he partnered with Eastside Rebuild manager Beryl Biles, who will continue to teach the class.
The second time, the class was full, but Clark said the next class will fill up quickly.
In this class, the women learn how to safely use drills and saws. It provides detailed explanations of the types of nails and screws and which one should be used for which work.
Mr. Clark hopes that people will find learning and working there as relaxing and fun as he does.
“It’s kind of cool to make something with your own hands instead of going out and buying something,” he said.
For more information or to register for a class, visit the NCW Woodshop website at ncwwoodshop.com or stop by our location at 101 Railroad Avenue, Suite 101A, Cashmere.

Locals make handmade lanterns at Sherborne Library
Written by Audrey Anderson
Local weekly magazine reporter
We recently held a fun Lotus Lantern Workshop at Sherborne Library. The workshop was led via the Internet by Shin Yun-hee from the New York City office of the Korean Spirit and Culture Promotion Project. Local participants have the option of attending in person at the library or via Zoom from home.
Ms. Singh began the workshop by sharing information about her organization. The Korean Spirit and Culture Promotion Project is a global organization run by volunteers from several countries, including the United States, Australia, Canada, Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom. In the United States, this project led to his 2,600 events, attended by 1 million people.
Mr. Singh then focused on the importance of the lotus flower in Buddhism. The roots of the lotus flower are in the mud, the stems rise out of the water, and the flowers are above the water, bathing in the sunlight. For Buddhists, the lotus flower represents rebirth, self-purification, and spirituality, and is a symbol of Buddhism itself. The color of lotus petals represents different qualities such as:
White man’s spiritual perfection and spiritual purity.
Pink is the best color for Buddha himself.
Blue serenity and peace.
Purple – self-awakening, harmony, balance.
On Yeongdeunghoe, or Buddha’s birthday, lantern festivals are held at Buddhist temples across Korea. Mr. Shin showed photos of the lantern festival and parade held in Seoul. These included brightly lit dragons, lighted towers, people carrying lanterns, and lanterns decorating temples.
After introducing the importance of lotus flowers and lanterns in Korea, Mr. Shin skillfully guided participants in making their own lotus lanterns. Participants, both in-person and via Zoom, were given a kit containing a lantern frame made of wire and paper, a package of petals and leaves made of thin paper, and adhesive. After everyone finished unpacking their kits, Shin explained how to prepare the petals. Apply glue to the lower white part of the petals and paste them in a specific pattern to the lantern frame. This he did in five stages to cover the frame. Attendees laughed and chatted as they worked on the lanterns, wiped the glue off their fingers, and watched the lanterns come to life. Everyone seemed very happy with the results of their efforts.
Once the glue was dry, Mr. Shin provided some information about South Korea’s history and Seoul’s evolution into the world-class city it is today.
During the colonial period, Japan conquered Korea and tried to assimilate the people into Japanese culture. People were forced to do unpaid work.
During the Korean War 70 years ago, 80% of South Korea’s infrastructure was destroyed. South Korea was the poorest country in the world, and its people were struggling to survive. By 1997, South Korea was bankrupt.
Both women and men donated gold jewelry and items to the government, even though they themselves were in need. People worked together for everyone’s benefit. The government used donated money and other sacrifices of the people to pay off huge debts.
Impressively, South Korea today is prosperous. The population of this country is 50 million. The average life expectancy in South Korea is 82.7 years, one of the highest in the world. Infant mortality rates are among the lowest in the world. Healthcare costs are among the lowest in the world. Crime rates are below the world average. South Korea hosts her four major sporting competitions in the world and is a major destination for business meetings and tourists.
At this point in the workshop, the glue was dry enough to move the lantern, and Shin bowed and said goodbye to everyone. Participants were pleased to learn about the lotus symbol in Buddhism and receive updates on the current situation in Korea. They were also excited to have made colorful lotus lanterns to decorate their home.

Local artists sell their work at Grand Central Mall Craft Fair
VIENNA, W.Va. (WTAP) – The Grand Central Mall Craft Fair was held over the weekend, giving people a chance to patronize local artists.
Various vendors sold a variety of items, including watches made from custom photolithography, unique ornaments, handmade jewelry, and flower growing kits.
Jason Licht of No Limit Arts uses old vinyl records to create a functional clock with a unique paint job. “This is pouring art,” Licht said, holding up one of his pieces. “You take the paint and basically spread it out on the album and rotate it this way and that and let it do its thing.”
Angela Watson offers face painting and airbrush tattoos through her business, Angela’s Misfits. “I’ve been an artist all her life,” Watson said. “Normally my medium was paper or any object that I could draw on. I thought, why not kids? Anyway, that’s how I got into it. Then, in the year I started airbrushing tattoos on my oldest children because I felt like they were being left out.”
Watson said she is relatively new to running her own business and is happy to have the opportunity to sell her services. “This is only my second year of doing this,” she said. “I’ve mainly been doing local fairs and some birthday parties. I’ve been trying to get involved in weddings and things like that. I’m hoping to expand my range little by little.”
Craft show organizer Becky Morrow, an artist herself, said she started the show to help local artists connect with each other and the community. “I want to help other people get out there and showcase their creations and their talents,” she said. “It shows their talent and they’re excited to show it to others.”
Moreau said more shows will be held at the mall throughout the year. The next event will be held on June 22nd and 23rd. Morrow said artists interested in participating in future shows should contact bemorrow14@outlook.com.

An anime that uses real death threats to create scenes
(Credit: Far Out / Eric Terade / Dex Ezeky)

Fans of popular properties are known to express their displeasure when things don’t go their way, and that dissatisfaction has been amplified by the advent of the online age, where negative opinions tend to be loudest. Masu. But one enterprising anime director decided to make the best of a bad situation and turned the death threats he received into a movie.
This really goes back to the late 1980s, when Michael Keaton was announced as the lead in Tim Burton’s Batman, angry letters poured in at Warner Bros. headquarters, and it was the backlash for The Last Jedi. It has also been taken over by Lucasfilm, which caused a huge panic. The Rise of Skywalker was ruined as a result, while Sonic the Hedgehog was postponed and reworked after it was quickly noted that the original design was truly nightmare-inducing.
Anime has always been a hotbed of boundary-pushing storytelling, unfiltered imagination, and all kinds of weirdness, but no matter how unique any project seeks to be, myths People who invest in always try to let you know when they don’t know. Happy. Hideaki Anno discovered that firsthand when Neon Genesis Evangelion ended with his 26th episode in March 1996.
In fact, the only reason End of Evangelion was made was to stem the wave of discontent that the TV series’ ending left a bad taste in many people’s mouths. Abandoning the main plot in the final episode, many fans demanded either a completely new ending or a different finale that would resolve many of the still unanswered questions. As a result, it was decided to wrap up the loose ends in a feature film.
In the story, Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami, and Asuka Langley Soryu will pilot the titular mecha and fight the angelic threat, this time without offending people. In one memorable scene, characters experience vivid hallucinations tied to a potentially world-ending prophecy, and seemingly random and unrelated images appear, including text, the exterior of a destroyed building, and a child’s drawing. will be done.
Not only was this building the real headquarters of the anime company Gainax Studios (it was defaced by fans furious at the way Neon Genesis Evangelion ended), but many of the letters were sent to Anno, who decided the best way to kill him. It was a preview. To deal with the anguish of having a group of people who had previously been such vocal supporters of his work, it was necessary to string them together with a sequel designed primarily to appease them.
Hell hath no fury like an angry fan to grind with an axe, but in a roundabout way, the end of Evangelion not only provides an even more delicious climax for those so enraged, but also by forced handiwork. , let them have their cake and eat it too. The creative team’s desire to finish the story under different terms than originally planned also appeared in the final cut.

Hard Truth Farmers Reserve Whiskey Gets Umbrana Right: Review
[image error]
Hard Truth Distilling Company
This is not a retraction. I have no intention of retracting the anti-umbrana wood criticisms I’ve spouted over the past few years. And I still strongly believe that using this type of wood to finish whiskey barrels is often a mistake. But if I come across an example where it’s worked, to some extent, mostly well, I’m happy to acknowledge it. That seems to be the case with the new Hard Truth Farmers Reserve.
Hard Truth Distilling Co. is a craft distillery located in Indiana, a state that is also home to the much larger and decidedly non-craft distillery MGP. While the latter is a large-scale operation that produces various brands of whiskey, Hard Truth focuses on distilling rye and bourbon and other spirits in small batches in the town of Nashville, Indiana. Although these whiskeys are on the younger side, they are incredibly good overall, as evidenced by the distillery’s recently released batch of cask-finished rye. Farmer’s Reserve marks the second time that Hard Truth has partnered with Mellencamp His Whiskey Company, a company founded by Hud Mellencamp, the son of Levi His Collison and the great John Mellencamp. Masu. The label on the bottle features one of the elder Mellencamp’s paintings entitled “American Boy And Girl,” which is about as Mellencamp’s name as you can think of.
Farmer’s Reserve is a blend of Hard Truth’s sweet mash bourbon and chocolate malt rye. Chocolate Malt Rye is a whiskey made from a mashbill containing deeply roasted malted barley to bring out the cocoa notes. Master Distiller Brian Smith says the blend was made with 45 barrels of bourbon and eight barrels of rye, purposefully blended to accentuate the flavor that the chocolate malt barley brings to the palate. The final step is adding some of the toasted Umbrana wood to the whiskey, resulting in a stave finish that is closer to what Maker’s Mark does to some of its expressions than a full barrel finish. The reason, Smith said, was to control the effects of Umbrana wood. “I’ve tasted too many whiskeys that used this wood as a finishing material and lost their balance,” he told me. “Our goal with this whisky was to not only showcase our talent in the art of blending our two in-house whiskies, but also to combine the unique flavor elements (Umbrana and Chocolate Malt Barley) with a rich flavor profile. It was also about creating a whiskey that was complex and consistent.”
You could say he was successful. Umbrana typically dominates and overwhelms the other flavors in the whiskey, essentially turning the whiskey into a liquid potpourri. Other distilleries and brands that have attempted (and failed in my opinion) to use Umbrana as a cask finish include Barrel Craft Spirits, Penelope Bourbon, and Rabbit Hole. But somehow it works here. Yes, you still immediately recognize this as an Umbrana-finished whiskey with deep aromas of cinnamon, nutmeg, incense and cocoa powder on the palate. However, Smith and his team were able to show some restraint by removing the wood from the barrels before things got out of hand, resulting in rich aromas of cherry, dark chocolate, caramel, and toffee. I did. At 106 proof, there’s a bit of heat to the finish, but it’s also a good candidate for enjoying on big ice.
No, I haven’t changed my mind about using Umbrana wood as a cask finish. In most cases it still doesn’t work. That’s okay, I don’t think it will become as popular as whiskey aged in sherry or Quercus casks anytime soon. But it’s nice to find an example of an Umbrana-finished whiskey that doesn’t hit with the intensity of Febreze. Hard Truth is a craft distillery to watch, and this new whiskey is another example of why.

Personalized craft hot sauce based on your zodiac sign
Have you ever heard of “Golden Retriever Energy”? This is used to describe someone who is high energy, fun, and overall positive to be around – someone like a Sagittarius. These signs have an optimistic attitude, which can be contagious and exhilarating. Free-spirited and adaptable, Sagittarius is known for embracing life’s unexpected moments, both good and bad. But considering they’re also one of the luckiest signs in the zodiac, more can go wrong than good. What’s more, these aren’t the kind of zodiac signs to keep quiet about, both literally and figuratively. So if there was ever a craft hot sauce on the market to rival Sagittarius, it would be the sauce known as Lucky Dog. .
Lucky Dog is one of the hot sauce tasting tables featured on our list of 13 Unusual Hot Sauce Brands You Must Try. There’s a good reason for that. Named after the owner’s dog, the brand cleverly calls itself “Food’s Best Friend” and each sauce in its lineup is made with all-natural, locally sourced ingredients. But if Sagittarius is one of the sources in particular, they will be what they call the Year of the Dog. Like all Lucky Dog sauces, Year of the Dog features a complex blend of flavor profiles. Balanced aromas of fruity pineapple, aromatic garlic, toasted sesame seeds, tangy Chinese mustard, spicy Aleppo pepper and sweet honey create a highly adaptable sauce. Just as these signs are in your life, so are they in your kitchen.
