Podcast #26 – An Interview with Sylvia Day

We’re back! We sat down with author Sylvia Day in a very fuzzy soundproof room at Penguin, along with her editor, Cindy Hwang, and publicist of awesomeness, Erin Galloway, and had a grand time talking about Bared to You, Day’s earlier novellas, and her goals for her presidency of RWA.

Here are the books we mention:

Daily Deals: Great YA, Suspense, and Non Fiction

The Girl of Fire and Thorns Rae CarsonThe Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson. $2.99

Because the book is awesome. Seriously at this price, you would be foolish not to buy it. We reviewed the book here and it was part of the DABWAHA tourney as a YA finalist. From my review:

Princess Lucero-Elisa of Oravalle is the younger of two sisters. She’s fat and unattractive but she was born with a Godstone in her belly, a mark that comes only once a century. This is a mark that means she is destined for greatness. The story opens on the da...

It's the return of the manga review! I know it's been a while. While we can't promise that these will become a regular feature at Dear Author, I will try to review a couple titles occasionally.

REVIEW: Defiant by Pamela Clare

Dear Ms. Clare,

You can count me among those who hopefully waited for Conner's story for all these years. Despite the faux Brogue which usually drives me screaming around a bend when I encounter it. Despite how much the books seem taken – at least in parts – directly from “Last of the Mohicans.” Despite all that yep, I was waiting for it. Actually I was bugging Jane to find out when we'd get our advanced copy. After finishing it, I can say the wait was well worth it.

Thursday News: Entangled goes the warehouse route; Apple Mini iPad news heats up

Apple iPad. Big Stock Photo

Sizzling ebooks stimulate bigscreen interest – Entertainment News, Top News, Media – Variety – Print publishing rights went up for auction last month [for The Marriage Bargain], but despite hefty seven-figure offers from most major publishers, Entangled saw enough upside to self-distribute — a change of heart that held up film-rights talks. Still, Hollywood interest in “The Marriage Bargain” remains high, and current talks are expected to yield a Gersh-repped rights...

Daily Deals: Suspense, historicals, and women’s fiction for $2.99 and under

[image error]The Concrete Blonde by Michael Connolly. $ 2.99

I was looking for a mystery/suspense novel to profile and this one was both low priced and well reviewed. Connolly was a Pulitzer Prize-winning crime reporter for the Los Angeles Times. A couple of the reviews mention that this title refers to previous books so I’m not sure whether this is a good place to start. It is a good price for book 3 in the Harry Bosch series.

REVIEW: The Darkest Day by Britt Bury

britt bury darkest day

Dear Ms. Bury

In paranormals, I feel like it is go big or go home and thus the book's success relies, in part, on the reader's willingness to buy into the setup and hang her disbelief on the hook of the front page. The Darkest Day felt like a romp to me. A crazy, sometimes funny, sometimes hot, campy and irreverent take on paranormal romance. Let's review some basic facts. The book has . . .

Magical warriors whose badge is essentially matching barbell tongue piercings.Magical warriors whose fa...

Debut Print Book: Liquid Lies by Hanna Martine

I’ve had some concerns by readers who are primarily print readers that the coverage at Dear Author has been too focused on ebooks. When I asked the readers what they were interested in seeing, they responded that they would like to know more about print debut authors. We developed a little questionnaire and every Wednesday at 10:00 AM CST (as long as we have content) we’ll post the questionnaire answers along with links to the author’s site and a buy link to her book. I hope this helps people...

REVIEW: Hawaiian Gothic by Heidi Belleau,Violetta Vane

Dear Ms. Belleau and Ms. Vane,

I really enjoyed the free short story of yours I read and have been on the lookout for your other work. Hawaiian Gothic sounded like something up my alley, even with a ghost angle: an m/m with multicultural characters set in Hawaii with a mystery twist and a gothic flavor. I can’t say that this was an unmixed pleasure, though. It’s a very ambitious work, and some of the writing is lovely, but the story is a hybrid of a number of different subgenres and it ultimat...

Wednesday Morning News: Happy Independence Day America

The July 4th Fireworks. Big Stock Photo

I admit that for a few moments last night I thought about not doing a news post but I eventually got over it. We still need news on Independence Day, right?

First up, two wildly competing views of copyright.

Copyright Reform Bill C – 11 | McMillan – “However, there are numerous restrictions. Most notably, because the work to be “format shifted” must be legally obtained and not borrowed or rented, copying music from a friend’s CD to an iPod would not be all...
