Wednesday Midday Links: Kobo Launches in Germany
Updated: Amazon just announced that AT&T is sponsoring its Kindle with 3G (and I don't know for how long) so that the price of the Kindle 3G with special offers is now $139. Even without a touch screen, I think this is the best ereader on the market. The 3G makes it so easy to get books on your device. All you have to do is mail them to your Kindle address. Don't forget to use the free.kindle.com instead of kindle.com so you don't pay for any document charges.

REVIEW: Siren by Tricia Rayburn
Dear Ms. Rayburn,
Creatures of the sea are my paranormal weakness. There are admittedly a lot of paranormal creatures that I'd sell out for, but I find the most romantic creature to be the mermaid/mermaid-like creature. Siren is a slower-paced book that balances a paranormal mystery with a strong romance that may make those tired of the usual YA fare take interest.

REVIEW: Hearts in Flight by Patty Smith Hall
"Serving her country as one of the Women's Army Special Pilots is Maggie Daniels's dearest wish. But there are obstacles to overcome above and beyond the enemies in the Pacific, including her overprotective family, skeptical fellow pilots—and handsome, distant squadron leader Wesley Hicks. Whatever it takes, Maggie will prove herself to Wesley, until she succeeds in winning his admiration…and love.
Wesley can see that Maggie's a first-class pilot. She's also too fearless by half. The war has...
REVIEW: This Perfect Kiss by Melody Thomas
Dear Ms. Thomas:
I have described your Avon historicals as a "guilty pleasure," but such a description undervalues their strengths, one of which is the romantic suspense subplot, which often engages me more than the romance itself. Still, the heroines tend toward stubborn and feisty, and the heroes toward dark and tortured, while the drama is high and the history, well, the history is definitely not why I read them. Somehow I managed to miss last year's book, so I was especially excited to...
On the State of the Epilogue
I'm not certain when the first epilogue appeared in romance. You can't blame it on the category books because I've read hundreds of old time categories and epilogues were far rarer in the "olden days." I think, but don't know for a fact, that the epilogue became de rigeur in single title books. Back in 2009, I ran a poll about epilogues and the great majority of readers who answered the poll loved epilogues. In the comments, though, readers agreed that the baby filled epilogue wherein...

REVIEW: Cat's Tale: A Fairy Tale Retold by Bettie Sharpe
Dear Ms. Sharpe,
I was a big fan of your previous reworking of the story of Cinderella, Ember, so when I heard you had another novella out based on a fairy tale, I was intrigued. I was slightly dismayed to discover that Cat's Tale was based on Puss in Boots, which is a fairy tale I'm actually not familiar with (I only know of the character played by Antonio Banderas in the Shrek movies, who is, admittedly, adorable). One of the pleasures of Ember was recognizing the echoes of the original...
Monday Midday Links: Sex Is Dangerous
Sharon sent me this link to an NPR review of Erica Jong's collection of stories called "Sugar in My Bowl". Various female authors have contributed essays on the topic of sex and sexual fantasy.
Liz Smith, of gossip column fame, contributes a tale of losing her virginity to her cousin. (Intriguingly, the family connection didn't seem to faze her.) On the delicate question of orgasm, Smith writes, "I was so ecstatically having 'something' special happen that I didn't know if I was missing...
REVIEW: A Night of Scandal by Sarah Morgan
Dear Ms. Morgan,
I'm always on the lookout for a new book by you, and when I saw that your latest Presents release was the first of a new series featuring a number of prominent authors, I was hooked at once. Released as the Bad Blood series in the UK, the Notorious Wolfes comprise eight books about the Wolfe siblings, all of whom were fathered by the same rich, powerful, and dastardly father. After a traumatic childhood and adolescence the Wolfes have scattered all over the world, and...

Everything You Wanted to Know About Digital Publishing But Were Afraid to Ask. A Q&A with Maya Banks
Prefatory Matter: Maya Banks sat on a panel at RWA regarding digital publishing. She came because others requested her to speak and Maya agreed to be frank about her numbers. No one asked any questions. On Twitter, Maya suggested that she would still be willing to field questions and I said I would host it. The purpose of this is to help authors understand what options might be out there for them and to help readers benefit from the authors' wide variety of publishing choices. Maya...
