Sunita's 2011 TBR Challenge: Hot Blood by Charlotte Lamb

I have fallen severely off the TBR wagon over the last few months, but it's time to get over my guilt and shame and climb back on. This month's topic is "fairy tales," and since I didn't have one in my TBR, I stretched the category and decided to read Hot Blood for the Challenge. This 1996 book by Charlotte Lamb has just been released as part of the HarlequinTreasury series, which Jane discussed in a recent post. I'm a huge Charlotte Lamb fangirl, and when Jane said on Twitter that Hot Blood ...

REVIEW: Keturah and Lord Death by Martine Leavitt

Dear Ms. Leavitt,

Elyssa Papa recommended your YA fantasy Keturah and Lord Death to me, saying that it was dark and romantic, and it is both of these things. My husband and I have been reading to each other in the evenings, and we frequently read YA, so I put this one in our reading queue. When the book came from the library, I saw that it had been a finalist for the National Book Award. While I liked Keturah and Lord Death, I didn't adore it as I was hoping I would.

MINI REVIEWS: July Harlequin Presents

I have an 8 book subscription for Harlequin Presents. It's about $25.00 and I enjoy the sudsy, angst laden stories. Unfortunately I got behind in my reading and reviewing of these. Here's the July reads for me (I don't know if everyone gets the same titles their subscriptions?)

A Stormy Spanish Summer by Penny Jordan

The doormat to asshole ratio is high. The hero, Vidal, perceives the heroine, Fliss, to be promiscuous because he found her in the embrace of a drunken teenager when she was...

Tuesday Midday Links: Scribd Launches New Reading App with Dear Author Featured

One of the things I did at RWA was meet with industry people. Okay that's all I did but I actually got something accomplished besides doing interviews. I met with Anne Watters Westpheling from Scribd and she shared with me their new App. It's called Float and it's designed to bring together your social media platforms like facebook, twitter, blogs, and other reading content into one unified place.

Many publishers have signed with them to allow 20% previews of the upcoming releases and those...

A Review-ish Rant, aka what happens when an author breaks the fourth wall

Dear Readers:

As you know, the 'dear author' address here is a fiction — a shtick and a distinctive stylistic characteristic of the blog. Before writing this post, I don't remember ever feeling that I was truly addressing the author in a review. Of course, I don't remember feeling that the author was intruding so powerfully into my reading experience of a fictional work as I did with Lori Foster's When You Dare...

REVIEW: Feast by Merrie Destefano

Dear Ms. Destefano,

I haven't been an avid reader of urban fantasy for some time. Like many people, I burned out on the subgenre when it seemed like 10 books were coming out every month. That said, I do occasionally check out new releases from new(ish) authors in the hopes of finding something that sounds different. The premise of Feast fit the bill.

Monday Midday Links: A New Fave Cover and Book Group Sale Sites

Enjoy sites like Groupon or Living Social?  If so, you aren't alone.  Around 50 million people have used Groupon inviting a hoard of copy cat social coupon sites like locusts to a wheat field.  All Things D reports that Hearst Owned magazines will launch its own group commerce site that will launch this summer:

The offers, which will start rolling out later this summer, will primarily target the male-dominated audiences of the two magazine brands. Later, Hearst will expand it to other...

REVIEW: Vampire Mistress and Vampire Trinity by Joey W. Hill

Dear Ms. Hill,

I'm back. Remember me? I read Vampire Instinct a few weeks ago and while it was a nice read, it was just that. Nice. I like you when you're crisp and edgy and take me to dark, weird places. So I picked up Vampire Mistress and Vampire Trinity and decided to give them a go. They both came out last year, but as soon as I found out that Vampire Mistress was the first of a two parter, I waited for the second one to come out. Reading Vampire Instinct reminded me to pick up the books, ...

Ebook Buyer's Guide: Know When to Buy an eReader and When to Wait

Mac Rumors has an awesome site that collects rumors around the internet to help people decide whether should buy a Mac product or when they should Wait. I figured we needed one for ebook readers.

The following is a list of the most popular ebook readers on the market with my estimation of whether you should buy an ebook reader or whether you should Wait. I take into account the dates of the past releases and factor in rumors. I don't guarantee that any of the rumors are true, but rather just p...
