REVIEW: The Amorous Education of Celia Seaton by Miranda Neville

Dear Ms. Neville:

When I was offered the chance to review The Amorous Education of Celia Seaton I had no idea what to expect. I've had mixed reading experienced with Avon historicals, and while I have enjoyed our few brief exchanges on Twitter, I really had no sense of where your books fit in within the Historical Romance subgenre. The title and cover art are formulaic Avon (i.e. not remarkable to me at all), and the marketing seems to put your writing style somewhere between Lisa Kleypas and ...

All About Amnesia, a Guest Post by Miranda Neville

Amnesia is one of the most reviled of romance tropes, right up there with secret babies, but it's also immensely popular. There are few writers with long careers who fail to tackle it at some point. And why not? It delivers plots rich in conflict, deception, forgiveness–and secret babies.

[image error]I thought I'd read a lot of amnesia romances, but found I needed a refresher course, (assisted by AAR's Special Title Listing). For me amnesia works best when the couple are somehow connected, whether or...

REVIEW: "Bound…" trilogy by Ava March

Dear Ms. March.

I really really REALLY thought I'd reviewed this series already but I can't find it anywhere. SUCH a hardship it was to reread it so I could review it. Or…not. ;) It's totally worth a reread. And what better recommendation is there than that?

This series is three novellas: "Bound by Deception," "Bound to Him," and "Bound Forever." Regency-set, they tell the story of the building relationship between Lord Oliver Marsden and Lord Vincent Prescott. "Bound by Deception" ends with...

Monday Midday Links: Apple Flexes Its App Store Muscle

Apple instituted a new rule that was to go into effect last month which disallowed Apps to have a direct link to the retailers purchasing site unless the retailer offered the same products for sale inside the App and allowed Apple to get 30%.  Under Agency pricing, of course, this meant that Kindle, BN, Kobo and others would lose money on every sale.   The deadline for updating the app came and went in June but now it appears that Apple is enforcing it.

Google App is gone from iTunes (Google...

REVIEW: Crave the Moon by Lori Handeland

Dear Ms. Handeland,

I will admit to having lost touch with your Nightcreatures series. Silly me thought that you'd switched over to your Phoenix Chronicles and hadn't been checking your website lately. Seems like I've missed not just one but two books in the process. Well, I'm back in the saddle with "Crave the Moon."

Open Thread for Authors (Author Promo) for August 2011

Welcome to the August Promotional Thread for Authors. What's this you say? I read quite a few blogs outside the romance blogosphere and many of the big ones have a daily open thread where the commenters drive the bus.

The rules for Author Promo Night Open Thread are as follows:

The book has to be released in that month (i.e., anything released during the last week of July would be a August release)
You can post for yourself or you can have a friend post for you if the idea of posting about...

Create Your Own Cloud of Ebooks with Calibre + Calibre OPDS + Dropbox

This post has been updated as of July 23, 2011.

*****

Apple appears to have pushed Google out of the ebookstore.  Kobo released an updated app with no buy link.  Google is randomly deleting Google Plus accounts.  Yet another ebook format has been announced.  I'm getting pretty fed up with the powers that be who run the ebook world.  The biggest weapon that readers have in their arsenal is the ability to decouple.  This means taking your books out of the cloud (the servers of Amazon, Apple...

REVIEW: With No Remorse by Cindy Gerard

Dear Ms. Gerard:

Sue Grimshaw, formerly of Borders and now acquisitions editor for the newly relaunched Bantam Loveswept line has always been after me to read you.  When the ARC of No Remorse hit my doorstep, I decided it was time to stop dithering and give you a try.  I'm glad I did.  This series has all the elements of standard romantic suspense fare and I mean that in the best way.  If readers like the connected series books featuring former military heroes, then they'll like this series.
