REVIEW: Touch of Crimson by Sylvia Day

Dear Ms. Day:

I felt like that there was a kernel of a really great story here but the story I wanted to read and the story I read were at such odds with each other. The story that I felt was trying to be told was of a man who had an enduring love which he pursued despite all of the rules of his world and despite the fact that it might bring about his ruin. Unfortunately, the story I read was about a man who had strong feelings for someone for which he broke all the rules while he ruined the l...

Authorial Stickiness and Self Publishing

I've been buying and reading a number of self published books of late, primarily because of the price point of $.99.  I find that the $.99 price point overcomes a lot of reservations I might have about a book.  One thing I did notice, as I was going through my purchases, is that I don't have a lot of repetitive authors I've purchased at $.99.

I wondered what other readers were doing and what kind of stickiness these self published authors were having for readers.  The $.99 price point is a...

REVIEW: Broken Fortress & Enemies and Shadows (Rifter Parts 6 & 7) by Ginn Hale

[Spoiler alert: I think I've managed to avoid direct spoilers for these two installments, but it's almost impossible to talk substantively about the series without referring to events that occur after the first installment, The Shattered Gates. Proceed at your own risk.]

Dear Ms. Hale,
[image error]Your Rifter series has been a revelation to me this year. It is one of the most compelling things I've read in recent memory, and I find the installment aspect fascinating. I look forward to each month's...

As Cindy turns the car sharply around the corner, the force presses me against the window.  The speed demon can't seem to slow down during curves.  It is fortunate for me that she likes to drive.  In the past three months, I am over the initial fun of stealing cars ...

REVIEW: The Doctor and the Runaway Heiress by Marion Lennox

Dear Ms. Lennox,

Jayne and I are both fans of your books, but your Medicals hold a special appeal for me. You manage to combine down-to-earth characters, plenty of medical context, and unusual settings, and this book is no exception. Despite the cheesy (but accurate) title and the fact that the Runaway Heiress is indeed both a runaway and an heiress, the hero and heroine of this novel are immensely appealing and somewhat unusual characters.

REVIEW: A Rather Remarkable Homecoming by C.A. Belmond

Dear Ms. Belmond,

Before I started this book, I hoped that my reading experience wouldn't continue the pattern of the previous three books – loved "Inheritance," thought "Engagement" was just okay, enjoyed "Invitation." In other words, up then down then up then maybe down again. Well, I liked "Homecoming" but definitely not as much as books one or three.

Friday Film Review: The Crimson Pirate

[image error]The Crimson Pirate (1952)

Genre: Action/Adventure/Romance

Grade: B-

I've wanted to review this one for a while but after it was taken down off of youtube, finding it turned out to be an issue. Part circus, part slapstick, part swashbuckler – The Crimson Pirate is campy fun but don't go into it expecting much seriousness or accuracy as the 1952 film makers seemed focused on little more than wowing the Saturday afternoon movie crowd.

REVIEW: Waking Up with the Duke by Lorraine Heath

Note to readers: This review contains SPOILERS. If you would like to read this book and prefer to remain spoiler-free, it may be best not to read this review.

Dear Ms. Heath,

I got this book from the library after a good friend of mine mentioned that it was one of her favorite books of the year. Waking Up with the Duke makes use of the conceiving an heir trope which has sometimes resulted in books I've loved and other times in books I didn't care for. I was hoping that this book would be o...
