REVIEW: White Hot Christmas by Serenity Woods

Dear Ms. Woods:

I've developed a deep appreciation for New Zealand/Australian set books and when I saw this in the Samhain ARC listing, I requested it immediately. It is the first story of yours that I read.

[image error]The Christmas story set in New Zealand immediately caught my attention. Merle Cameron comes to visit her sister and begins an affair with her husband's best friend and cousin, Napoleon (Neon) Carter. It seems like a perfect setup. The affair's end is a date certain when Merle returns to...

Agony/Ecstasy Anthology: Rebecca Lawton and "Taken"

The captivity narrative has a long tradition in the romance genre dating as far back to the 1912 publication of The Sheik by E.M. Hull  In the 70s and 80s, the captivity narrative often took the form of the Noble Savage and the White Woman.  The racist undertones were perhaps unintentional.  In Taken, I found a modern look at the captivity narrative, a riff off the 80s bodice rippers.

And yet, when he moved again and brought himself down next to her, almost touching her leg with his own...

Publishers, It's Your Move

I'm concerned that publishers have a deep disconnect with readers.  This shouldn't be a surprise given that readers aren't the customer of publishers, but recent events really highlight this.  I have wavered on posting this article because on the one hand, do I really care what happens to publishers?  Won't I be able to find good authors without the publisher mechanism? Should readers be concerned about the decline of publishing in its current state? After all, publishing will still exist...

Agony/Ecstasy Anthology: Shoshanna Evers and "The Wooden Pony"

Of all the stories in the book,  "The Wooden Pony" by Shoshanna Evers seemed the most traditionally BDSM but the set up was so nicely done (the couple meets through an online ad).  It dovetailed nicely with Christine d'Abo's story, Bruised Ego.  The female protagonist here was searching for an outlet for her need for pain. Before, it was cutting. In Bruised Ego, the male protagonist used unsanctioned fights.  Like Bruised Ego, sex isn't the ultimate goal, it's an emotional release and...

Agony/Ecstasy Anthology: A.L. Simonds and "Stitch and Bitch"

It was important that this anthology be as inclusive as possible.  I don't recall receiving a submission for a trans protagonist but I did receive several lesbian stories.  This was my favorite because of the mix of characters and topics.  Quirky but quiet. A. L. Simonds can be found here.

Sex wasn't supposed to be like this. Shame hurt as much as any bite, and, somehow, perversely, felt just as good. Priya gasped for air, riding the rippling aftershocks, and tried not to question herself.

She...
