Laura Sims’s debut novel, Looker (Scribner), was published to critical acclaim in early 2019; The Wall Street Journal called it “a sugarcoated poison pill of psychological terror” and Grazia (UK) called it “dazzlingly creepy storytelling.” Looker, an Indie Next Great Reads Pick, was featured on ‘Best of’ lists in Vogue, People, Entertainment Weekly, Real Simple, Esquire UK, Southern Living, and more. Looker has been optioned for television by Entertainment One and Emily Mortimer’s King Bee Productions.

Sims has also published four books of poetry, including, most recently, Staying Alive; her first poetry collection, Practice, Restraint, was the winner of the 2005 Fence Books Alberta Prize. Sims has been the recipient of a US-Japan Creative

Thanks so much, I'm glad you loved the book! As for the inspiration, I used to live in a neighborhood of Brooklyn where you would see celebrities around fairly often...I started to think about how strange it was that we were living our very regular lives alongside people who were living extraordinary (or extraordinary-seeming) lives, and the dissonance that created. Then, the voice of my narrator kind of popped into my head one day--she was so angry and bitter and envious! I had to start writing her thoughts down...so I did, and that's how the whole thing started. Thanks for your question! (less)

Mona Awad's ALL'S WELL is a dark, delicious, uproarious dream, the perfect follow-up to her scathingly funny and brilliantly strange BUNNY. I was riveted by Miranda's journey from start to finish, from the mundane hell of dealing with chronic pain to ...more

Looker by Laura Sims
"Wow, what a fantastic book! I'm a slower reader, and I devoured this pretty quickly. I chased after that narrative voice heart-racingly, desperate to see where it would lead. And boy, did it lead to some great, dark places!"
Looker by Laura Sims
"This was some book! I don't think I've ever disliked a character more than I have in this novel. But what a great read! I highly recommend it. And it's short. Less than 200 pages. The author who said it was like Polanski's Repulsion was right. It tru" Read more of this review »
Looker by Laura Sims
"Hmm. I'm not quite sure how to rate this one. It started off very strong with a clear, purposeful sense of voice in our main character. I love following a character who isn't just deeply flawed, but borders on the sociopathic, and it seems Sims gave " Read more of this review »

“The feeling of our moment tingles at the ends of my fingers and toes.”
Laura Sims, Looker

“But wouldn't it make us sisters, the actress and me? Wouldn't it be an act of communion with her, in the end? Could I ever make her see it that way?”
Laura Sims, Looker

“I am sick to death of men. Buzzing, angry men. Hot liquid men. Men wanting sex. Men wanting to touch and be touched. Men wanting to drain you of every last ounce of energy you've reserved for getting through the days…Men leaving their refuse everywhere: inside, outside, all over the world. Until the world fills up and spills over as it may soon do: The End.”
