Ep104: Micha Mikailian, founder of Intently, on the Power of Setting Intentions
About Micha
Micha Mikailian is a serial entrepreneur with 22 years of experience, and 8 startups to date. He loves creating game changing businesses that contribute to the evolution of humanity. His most recent company, Intently, is software platform that replaces online ads with inspirational images chosen by the user. With over 25% of internet users using ad-blocking software, the vision for Intently is to create a new paradigm in the $150B online ad industry by giving users control of who advertises to them.
Key Conversation Points
Focusing on your gifts
Creating a drastically different company from your last
Using inspirational imagery to your advantage
Shifting your thinking to focus on gratitude and intentions
Utilizing your network and helping others
Seeing your ideas through despite lack of support
Detailed Conversation Highlights
Micha describes himself as an extreme extrovert on the introvert/extrovert spectrum. His business partner, who is the pretty much the opposite has caused him to appreciate introverts and the dynamic of having complementary personalities. After being heavily involved in advertising for several years, he became disgusted with it and sought a departure. His new venture had to be drastically different from the old ones and focus on the betterment of humanity and sharing a different set of gifts with the world. After two weeks of consistent meditation, he got the idea for Intently, received full support from his business partner and started on his quest to change the way that online advertising was used. He recalled the passive ramifications of having an inspirational image around in aiding him to cope with triggered emotions while having a conversation with his mother.
Surrounding yourself with positivity and inspirational themes can have a profoundly beneficial impact on your life. Micha recalls a friend of one of his customers who was borderline suicidal, and how installing imagery of what he was grateful for on his computer ushered a complete transformation and rekindled an optimistic view of his life. Micha then started to focus on development, tapping into his network and finding someone with the skill set he needed that was unhappy with his job. It is important for introverts to remember that you don’t have to do everything yourself. It is important to utilize your network. It is even more important to take initiative even when others doubt you. Micha’s first company was an online “yellow pages” style directory called Special Pages that wouldn’t have come to fruition if he didn’t just take a chance. Entrepreneurs are a special breed of visionaries that many times have insight that others don’t at the time.

Episode 103: Pete Walter Gives Introvert Friendly Tips for Getting Media Exposure
About Pete Walter
Pete Walter is the founder of Deal with the Media, an online resource for entrepreneurs, startups, small and medium sized businesses to discover how to get and leverage free advertising from media exposure. He is also director of First Take, a consultancy firm specializing in media training, presentation training and making video for the web. His clients include major banks, charities, government institutions, universities and arts organizations.
Walter has been in sync with the media from an early age. The son of a broadcast journalist, he focused part of his early career on video. This lead to seven years in the television industry, mostly as a producer and editor. He produced factual entertainment, documentaries, drama and new media and has credits for the BBC, Channel 4, Five and MTV amongst others. During his time in television production, he was selected by Broadcast Magazine as one of the top people under 30 to watch in the TV industry.
Key Conversation Points
Recognizing extroverted tendencies among introverts
Classifying cultures on the introvert/extrovert spectrum
Using knowledge of other cultures to your advantage
Expanding your reach
Understanding broadcasting vs. narrowcasting
Becoming or finding the “go to” person
“Packaging” your message for maximum impact
Having a unique perspective to offer the media
Seizing media opportunity
Harnessing momentum
Reconsidering traditional media
Detailed Conversation Highlights
Pete describes himself as a natural introvert that switches to an extroverted state seamlessly in certain situations such as public speaking. However, he feels that many activities still bring out his introverted side, such as sales calls or networking events. Ironically, some aspects of public performance feel natural to introverts. Although we usually hear the introvert/extrovert spectrum used to describe personality types, they can also be used to describe cultures. The US is known generally for being a very extroverted culture, and even though the UK can seem introverted by comparison, the influence of US culture and corporate practices has left its mark on many parts of the world. Regardless of where cultures fall on the spectrum, paying close attention to the social norms of another culture is of the utmost importance if you’re working to establish a global presence.
The lines between the corporate and entrepreneurial worlds are becoming increasingly blurred. In spite of this, a lot of entrepreneurs lose sight of the big picture and operate within close networks as opposed to expanding their reach. You can take your venture to the next level by using the media as a catalyst for success. If you become an expert in a medium with far-reaching influence, you can be recognized as such in record time with a huge audience. If you present yourself (or have someone else represent you) in a manner that is knowledgeable yet charismatic, you’ll have a much greater impact. It’s important to make sure that you give journalists all the important details of who you are and what you do instead of trusting them to do it. One of the best ways to go about getting media attention early on is to establish a unique take on whatever subject you’re involved in. Never underestimate the power of sound bites.

Ep102: Alex Honeysett on Marketing and Message Clarity
About Alex Honeysett
Alex Honeysett is a Brand + Marketing Consultant who helps businesses close the gap between how they market to humans and how those humans want to be marketed to. Alex believes the secret to marketing success is not to sell your soul, lose your sense of humor or shape-shift into a corporate marketing robot–it’s to create real, human relationships with your clients. After spending nearly a decade leading corporate communications strategies for companies including Thomson Reuters and NASDAQ, Alex now helps entrepreneurs and small businesses create foundational brand, messaging and marketing strategies that leverage all the ways they innately communicate and connect with people and bring those strategies to life. Alex’s articles have been featured in The Daily Muse, Forbes, Inc., Mashable, TIME, etc.
Key Conversation Points
Making your transition
Simplifying your business
Avoiding confusion in messaging
Leveraging your success
Identifying your prospect’s humanity
Refining your message
“Calling in the troops”
Identifying your best marketing tools
Detailed Conversation Highlights
Alex describes herself as having both strong introvert and extrovert tendencies. After a corporate career spanning many years within several companies, Alex noticed a disconnect between the corporate message and how it was received by the public. While writing a press release, she noticed that after being modified by passing through so many hands, she couldn’t even fully understand or appreciate the message she was to present. She departed the corporate world to embrace entrepreneurship and appreciated how much more direct involvement she had with the way her business presented itself. Furthermore, passion and interest in the business can create an environment that’s more open to challenging traditional advertising and marketing ideas.
It is important to carefully manage your transition from more traditional work to an entrepreneurial one, but that doesn’t entail hesitation. It is prudent to take the time to understand your process, because confusion and lack of confidence can stop you in your tracks. Anyone you want to work with should be evaluated based on who they are as a person rather than demographic categorizations. Refining your message is a significant part of branding, but if you find yourself in a rut, you shouldn’t forget to utilize your network and ask for help. In addition, make sure to be specific about what you need help with. There are so many outlets and ways that you can pitch and promote yourself, so it is best to align yourself with whatever marketing methods best match your goals and personality.

Ep101: Julie Gordon White on Planning a Successful Exit Strategy
About Julie Gordon White
Julie Gordon White is a certified business broker that has over 23 years of corporate, entrepreneurial and business brokerage experience. Julie founded BlueKey Business Brokerage M&A in 2003 to maximize her passion for entrepreneurship through the sale and acquisition of companies with revenues up to $10 million. In 2011, Julie founded www.ExitJourney.com to help share her message of “Value Your Business, Value Yourself” in a much bigger way. Julie is the President of California Association of Business Brokers and is a trusted media resource for Inc. Magazine, Entrepreneur Magazine, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, San Francisco Business Times and others. Julie was also honored for her accomplishments in 2011 by the Women Presidents’ Organization and OPEN American Express.
Key Conversation Points
• Avoiding confusion, gaining clarity
• Honoring your comfort zone and pacing yourself
• Following the ideal business strategy for you
• Growing your business with intent to sell it
• Understanding how to value your business
• Documenting your systems
• Understanding the art of the deal
• Trusting your intuition
Detailed Conversation Highlights
Julie describes herself as an extrovert that has a deep appreciation for the times when she requires solitude. It is important to acknowledge that everybody needs social interaction and solitude, just in different amounts. The concept of perusing “the big idea” is important, but can lead to problems unless your goals are broken down in to smaller, manageable tasks. If you connect with your comfort zone and make sure that you spend time growing your business in a way that works for your personality and goals, you will take risks with greater success. Staying in your comfort zone does not equate to inaction, which is a common misconception. When starting your business, it is easy to suffer information overload.
With the possibility of obtaining massive amounts of information and confusion surrounding how and if to integrate it into your business strategy, you might be doing yourself a disservice. It is beneficial to think of your business’ exit strategy from the beginning since so many pass through different hands through acquisition, inheritance, etc. It is imperative that you are on top of your business financials, and review them on a regular basis — even as often as weekly depending on the type of business. Thoroughly understanding the process and components of your business will give you the freedom and confidence to enjoy the journey. There is no one particular way to handle a departure from your business, as it’s determined by the type of business you run, your prospective buyers/partners and your specific goals. No matter what, it never hurts to “think big,” but trust in your intuition.

Ep100: Debbie Page Whitlock, Laurie Helgoe, Donna Rowe, Susan Cain, Mary Anne Radmacher

About This Episode
I’m so incredibly pleased to be presenting this 100th episode to you. When the first episode was posted on iTunes on August 13, 2010, I don’t think I imagined that we’d still be going strong – better than ever, actually – 100 episodes later. I didn’t think that far ahead. It was a grand experiment, and all I knew was that I enjoyed interviewing my fellow introvert entrepreneurs and putting their wisdom out into the world. I can safely say now that starting and sustaining this podcast has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done, both personally and professionally.
To mark the anniversary, I decided to pull short excerpts from the top five most downloaded episodes of the past five and a half years. These are presented in no particular order, except I did decide to start out with the most downloaded episode, so we kick off with my interview with Debbie Page Whitlock, titled “Money and Mindfulness.”
And because the occasion feels too important to limit the spotlight to five people, I’ve included links to the top 20 most downloaded podcasts. AND, in the spirit of year-end lists, I’ve also included the top 10 most downloaded episodes from 2015.
You’re going to be hearing from introverts Debbie Page Whitlock, Laurie Helgoe, Donna Rowe, Susan Cain, and Mary Anne Radmacher. Each of them has valuable insight and a unique perspective that adds to the richness of information we have about introversion and entrepreneurship. I hope you enjoy this stroll down memory lane!

In this from March 2012, Susan replies to my inquiry about balancing the paradox of not wanting to be in the spotlight with needing to be in the spotlight in order to advance a message. Then she shares some thoughts on how to show up authentically once you are in the spotlight, whether that’s in a job interview or networking.

Ep99: David JP Fisher Helps Introverts Navigate Networking in the 21st Century
About David Fisher
David J.P. Fisher (D. Fish) is a speaker, coach, and best-selling author of Networking in the 21st Century: Why Your Network Sucks and What to Do About It. Building on 20 years of experience as an entrepreneur and sales professional, he combines nuanced strategy and real-world tactics to help professionals become more effective, efficient, and happy. As the president of RockStar Consulting, he works with individuals and organizations to develop more effective networking, sales, and entrepreneurial skills. He lives in Evanston, IL – next to a huge cemetery, which helps him appreciate the value of every day.
Key Conversation Points
Being open to others’ observations about you
Accepting the introverted side of yourself
Ignoring negative internal voices
Prioritizing an action daily
Owning your material, no matter how good or bad you perceive it to be
Approaching networking in a holistic fashion
Showing genuine interest in others
Taking things step by step
Networking with prospects and peers
Connecting your networking efforts with your business goals
Finding the most appropriate setting for networking
Detailed Conversation Highlights
David considered himself an extrovert until a comment about him being an introvert with good social skills from an acquaintance forced him to reconsider his views. His work as a performer and his love of interaction with others caused him to believe he was an extrovert. Upon further introspection, he realized that although he enjoyed being around people, that it was ultimately draining. Now, he considers himself an introvert with ambivert tendencies. When it comes to accomplishing a lofty goal or working on an involved project, it is important to resist psyching yourself out. Many people possess the ability to reason their way out of something before even giving it an honest attempt.
The best course to cope is to ignore negative thoughts and make a deliberate effort to work at least a little toward your goal every day. It is a tactic used by many successful introverts such as Jerry Seinfeld. It is one of the best methods to create a feeling of investment, and allows one to realize that completion in itself is a victory. It can be extremely helpful to break a goal down into smaller steps, as opposed to taking it out all at once. A beneficial shift in perspective for introverts would be looking at networking as relational instead of transactional, as it gives people a chance to cultivate more meaningful relationships. However, nothing can be achieved if you don’t show up. It is also imperative not to waste time and energy networking with the wrong people. Attend events or talk to others who are part of the key demographics for your offerings.

Ep98: Tracy Benson Encourages Introverts to Connect Through Storytelling
About Tracy Benson
Tracy Benson is the founder and CEO of On the Same Page, a business consultancy that partners with the world’s leading organizations to apply employee communication and engagement strategies, often during times of change. At the heart of the firm is a passion for supporting clients in solving complex business problems in the areas of assessment and strategy; execution and measurement; leadership training and coaching; and driving business outcomes such as performance improvements, culture and organizational behavior change, functional excellence and transformation, merger and acquisition integration and restructuring, and collective bargaining agreements. The company works in collaborative relationships across all business sectors.
Key Conversation Points
Finding your personal/professional balance
Becoming a better communicator
Articulating your personal passions
Communicating your business mission effectively
Establishing a communication strategy
Anticipating and meeting client needs
Exploring the call to action
“Knowing” and “doing”
Understanding the role of storytelling
Establishing trustworthiness
Detailed Conversation Highlights
Tracy made a career around establishing not only more effective, but genuine communication. In spite of being quite outgoing, she identifies as an introvert — a concept that was a bit perplexing to her prior to deeper understanding of introversion. Although she enjoyed her work, the back-to-back demands of consulting resulted in burnout. At that point, she made the decision to start her own consulting firm and make the best out of her introverted qualities. She began to notice that many people who were involved with similar work were introverts as well.
Tracy emphasizes how important it is to properly communicate the mission and goals behind your business. Clear communication is not only a necessity when it comes to potential customers and partners, but also quite useful for rallying employees and fostering a meaningful company culture. Tracy introduces the concept of storytelling as a means of helping people to make connections with your business. Ever-shrinking attention spans mean that it is more important with every passing year to establish a meaningful, emotional connection with others. There are several key components ranging from storytelling and active listening to crafting a call-to-action that encourages input. It is of the utmost importance that people feel that you, and your brand by extension, are trustworthy. Tracy offers her best advice on establishing trust and explains why it plays to introvert strengths.

Ep97: Catriona Pollard on Going From Unknown to Expert
About Catriona Pollard
Catriona Pollard is the founder and director of CP Communications, a well-respected and innovative PR and social media agency, which merges traditional PR methodologies with cutting-edge social media strategies. She is the author of the popular book, ‘From Unknown To Expert’, a step-by-step process for growing your profile and expanding your influence by becoming a recognized expert in your field using PR and Social Media
Key Conversation Points
Seizing opportunities
Figuring out your motivation
Understanding the growing importance of PR
Leveraging your success
Understanding the impact of your words and actions
Creating your personal brand
Allowing your blog and website to speak for you
Acknowledging defeatist attitudes and ideas
Identifying what’s needed to remove your limitations
Overcoming fear and self-doubt
Confronting unexpected challenges
Getting the media interested in you
Detailed Conversation Highlights
Catriona considers herself a mix of introvert and extrovert in her behavior, although she identifies as a true introvert. She understands and appreciates the importance of interpersonal feedback, but recognizes that she needs solitude and reflection in order to recharge her energy. She states the importance of recognizing your unique personality traits to best know how to present yourself to the outside world. Marketing and PR can be a winning combination when establishing yourself, but the landscape has changed and entrepreneurs — especially introverts must learn to adapt. Even though Social Media has made it easier for introverts to interact with others and the press, there is a skill set to develop to effectively promote yourself to the media. Furthermore, it is still paramount to engage in various types of public speaking.
Catriona faced many challenges when she began to market herself in terms of promoting herself and her brand to others in public. Her fear and self-doubt were so limiting that she sought behavioral guidance, going as far as coaching and hypnosis. She recognized it was imperative to overcome her limitations in order to flourish in her branding and promotional efforts. After a string of successes, she realized that she was the only one holding herself back — and that she was completely capable of introducing others to her vision.

Detailed Conversation Highlights
Sherry shares how writing letters of affirmation to people she never met makes her smile and has become a mainstay in her life every year near her birthday. She is what many would now consider a true ambivert. She finds both solitude and interacting with others energizing and can be anywhere on the spectrum on any given day. Her business, which focuses on the celebration of life and happiness, stemmed from a history of anxiety and depression. She discusses how happiness is often believed to simply be an inherent trait in people, but how it actually can be a methodical, mindful process. It is important to hone the natural ability of introverts to connect with their inner voice and to assume no guilt for being who they are. It is common to see people judge self-expression and interest based on extroverted frameworks. There are many different ways to experience the same moment, and none is better than the other.
