Key Conversation Points

Being fearless and letting go
Appreciating authenticity
Examining assumptions about who you are and who you serve
Properly placing your energy for sustainable results
Appreciating observation and intuition
Examining stress and time management
Embracing your “rare” qualities
Identifying your true purpose as an entrepreneur
The one question that can snap things into focus

Detailed Conversation Highlights

Jeffrey describes himself as a “brave introvert”, meaning that in spite of the challenges of introverts can face when attempting to step out of their comfort zone, he chooses to push himself in order to keep encountering enriching opportunities in life. In these instances it becomes even more important that introverts honor their instincts and their solitude after they achieve their goals in a more extroverted fashion. There is something liberating about understanding and pushing through fear. The focus shouldn’t be on trying to live life without fear, but embracing it with less fear. Jeffrey decided to create his coaching business with creative entrepreneurs in mind, who lack resources for planning and development compared to traditional models.

Empathy carries particular weight when dealing with people, especially when their experiences and worlds are vastly different from your own. Success comes in many forms, but it is imperative to maintain perspective and not to be judgmental of those who have the success you desire. When you release mental hang-ups and embrace being open, prosperity can be achieved as long as negativity and shame aren’t present. For introverts, the concept of sales may be cringe-worthy, but service resonates strongly typically because of cultivating relationships. When the service you provide is built seamlessly into the sales process, it’s the guidance and rapport that becomes the link to the point of sale without any of the negative connotations surrounding the word “sale.” Exuding the right energy is becoming increasingly important in the business world, and introverts have an advantage since they are so well attuned to the innermost thoughts and feelings that we have. Many people don’t make an immediate connection between their business and what drives them crazy in life, but a strong connection almost always exists. Changing the equation around and asking yourself what drives you crazy can aid in finding a purpose and direction for your endeavors.

Ep113: Arden Clise and Essential Etiquette for Professional Success

Ep113: Show Notes for Arden Clise and Essential Etiquette for Professional Success

About Arden Clise

Arden-0042Arden Clise, founder of Clise Etiquette, is a business etiquette speaker, trainer and coach. She has helped thousands of professionals, from executives to front-line staff, confidently and comfortably navigate business situations. A popular writer, Arden wrote a regular business-etiquette column for the Puget Sound Business Journal and currently writes an award-winning newsletter. She is often quoted in national and international publications including Real Simple magazine, the Wall Street Journal and China Daily USA, and is a frequent guest on radio and television shows.

Her new book is “Spinach in Your Boss’s Teeth: Essential Etiquette for Professional Success” (April 2016)

Key Conversation Points

Tackling situations that require good etiquette
What it’s like to have your writing edited and published
Being an introvert who has to market a book
Understanding the value of self promotion and putting yourself out there
Understanding digital diplomacy and why it’s important
Interacting with others online respectfully, especially about sensitive topics (like politics!)
Recognizing how lack of tone can adversely impact digital communication
Being conscious of the approach you use to connect with others

Detailed Conversation Highlights

Arden Clise falls into the “social introvert” category, meaning that she is comfortable and even energized around people, but still needs alone time to recharge. She has taken her knowledge and experience as an etiquette consultant and made it accessible through her upcoming book, Spinach in Your Boss’s Teeth: Essential Etiquette for Professional Success. Even though her book can benefit anyone who has minimal knowledge of business etiquette, part of her demographic focus was on young people starting their careers, those transitioning to more demanding roles, and those in a variety of roles in the business world.

Arden shares a glimpse of her experience of writing her book, including where she’s invested the most time and energy. Her biggest piece of advice: When embarking on any written project, it is important to source competent editors. Even authors who are skilled at writing can benefit and learn from proper editing. When your book is finally published, the ideal situation would be to already have a marketing plan and platform in place. Your book won’t reach its potential if it isn’t promoted properly. A large part of effective promotion involves networking and promoting yourself to others, which can sometimes be challenging for introverts.

The conversation shifts to some practical etiquette tips, such as a need for digital diplomacy — etiquette utilized on digital tools such as telephones, text messages, social media, and email. In spite of there being overall less anonymity online than there used to be, many people are far from respectful. In spite of good intentions, text communications can often be misinterpreted. Etiquette is also of increasing importance when it comes to cell phones, as improperly timed interactions are more and more common. And during an election season, it’s even more important to use discretion about what to say and how to share it, especially if you’re speaking as a business owner. Ultimately, common courtesy and common sense prevail no matter the communication medium or topic.

Ep112: Geoffrey Parker and the Platform Revolution

Ep112 Podcast Show Notes: Geoffrey Parker and the Platform Revolution

About Geoff Parker

Platform Revolution Geoffrey ParkerGeoffrey Parker is a professor of management science at Tulane University and a research scientist at the MIT Initiative for the Digital Economy. Parker has contributed to industrial organization economics as co-developer of the theory of two-sided markets. He studies distributed innovation, business platform strategy, and the integration of distributed and renewable energy resources. The National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, and numerous corporations have supported his research. Parker advises senior leaders and is a frequent speaker at academic conferences and industry events. He received his B.S. from Princeton and his M.S. and Ph.D. from MIT.

His new book, “Platform Revolution: How Networked Markets Are Transforming the Economy–And How to Make Them Work for You,” is co-authored with Sangeet Paul Choudary and Marshall W. Van Alstyne.

Key Conversation Points

Defining and understanding the platform model/business
Comparing product business to platform business
Understanding how a product business successfully integrates a platform
Considering platform businesses as a great fit for introverted entrepreneurs
Recognizing industries that are suitable and unsuitable for platform disruption
Acknowledging the risks and rewards of the platform business model

Detailed Conversation Highlights

Geoff acknowledges his introverted side, and how it is helpful when it comes to organizing teams. Platform companies are companies that share their resource with their users’ resources and assets under a contractual model. Many times, platforms have limited to no ownership of the assets used, because they are supplied by customers and the platform can act as a “matchmaking” service. Sometimes product companies end up producing platforms that are successful, such as Apple’s iTunes platform. Platform business are an ideal match for introverted entrepreneurs, because as long as you operate within the guidelines, you are free to alter and add to content without having to interact with anyone, or gain approval. There are many industries that have already been disrupted and revolutionized via platforming and low cost, easy access to information. The media is a prime example. If and how quickly an industry utilizes platforms depends on regulation, cost and risk. However, there are going to be facets of certain industries where platforming will not be suitable. Other times, platforms are not built properly and can encourage integration of negative aspects as more people use them. A prime example is MySpace. When considering building a platform, it is important to ask what the prime transaction is, and to build an accessible user experience around that.

Ep111: How to Break Free When You’ve Run Aground

Ep111 Show Notes: How to Break Free When You’ve Gone Aground

About This Episode

I’ve been feeling a bit stuck lately, mostly in business, but a little in life. My entire existence during 2014 and 2015 was geared towards one thing: the publication process of my book, “The Introvert Entrepreneur.” Everything was focused on the launch date of Nov 3, 2015. And now that the date has come and gone, and we’re almost 4 months on the other side of it, I find myself feeling a bit rudderless. It’s that feeling of being stuck that I explore in this episode, first by telling you about how I gained clarity about what was going on, and then by sharing eight simple ways for any of us to get unstuck.

Sapphire Before_After Aground

The star of this episode: “Sapphire,” a 1964 25′ Columbia sailboat, before and after restoration

Key Episode Points

The importance of not working when others aren’t working
How figuring out the perfect metaphor started the process of getting unstuck
What sailing and being an entrepreneur have in common
Wisdom from Mark Twain, Warren Buffet and St. Francis of Assisi
Eight ways to get your momentum back, including how to challenge your fear-based thoughts and leverage your comfort zone

Quotes Mentioned in the Show

Only two sailors, in my experience, never ran aground. One never left port and the other was an atrocious liar.  -Don Bamford

Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.  -St. Francis of Assisi

The goal is not to sail the boat, but rather to help the boat sail herself.  –John Rousmaniere

Should you find yourself in a chronically leaking boat, energy devoted to changing vessels is likely to be more productive than energy devoted to patching leaks.  -Warren Buffet

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.  -Mark Twain

Ep109: Nancy Duarte and Patti Sanchez Show Us How to Illuminate Our Message

Ep109 Show Notes: Nancy Duarte and Patti Sanchez

About Nancy Duarte

Nancy Duarte IlluminateNancy Duarte is a communication expert who has been featured in Fortune, Forbes, Fast Company, Wired, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, The Economist, LA Times and on CNN. Her firm, Duarte, Inc., is the global leader behind some of the most influential visual messages in business and culture. The largest design agency in the Silicon Valley, and 5th largest woman-owned employer, Duarte, Inc. is estimated to have created more than a quarter of a million presentations.

Nancy has 25 years of experience working with global companies and thought leaders, influencing how the world perceives some of the most important brands and entities, including Apple, Cisco, Facebook, GE, Google, HP, TED, Twitter, and the World Bank. Nancy has been a keynote speaker at numerous business conferences, including Future of Storytelling, World Domination Summit, and the Pioneers Festival. She has spoken at a number of Fortune 500 companies and counts many more among her firm’s clientele. Nancy also speaks at business schools and teaches classes at Stanford University several times a year.

The “HBR Guide to Persuasive Presentations” gives readers the tools and confidence they need to master public speaking.

About Patti Sanchez
Patti Sanchez Illuminate

Patti Sanchez, the Chief Strategy Officer for Duarte, has over twenty-five years of experience as a communicator. She has led transformative communications initiatives for brands including Cisco, Ericsson, Hewlett-Packard, LexisNexis, Nike, Symantec, VMware, and Compassion International, and has taught hundreds of leaders to become more empathetic and effective communicators.

Patti has delivered highly rated presentations at ExactTarget Connections, Presentation Summit, Leadership Communication Days, and the IABC World Conference. Her work has been honored by IABC, BMA, and Vital Speeches of the Day and her writing has been featured in Harvard Business Review. Her new book, “Illuminate: Ignite Change Through Speeches, Stories, Ceremonies, and Symbols,” was co-authored with Nancy Duarte and was released in February 2016.

Key Conversation Points

Understanding what moves others
Inspiring action with your words
Caring about your audience and what’s important to them
Using visual symbols to strengthen and supplement your message
Using “motivating” and “warning” symbols to influence others
Embracing your inner leader, no matter what your title or job description

Detailed Conversation Highlights

Patti considers herself an ambivert and appreciates the advantages she has received from being able to understand and appreciate both sides of the spectrum.  Nancy considers herself an ambivert as well in terms of energy but with strong extroverted tendencies. It has made for a beneficial partnership especially when co-authoring a book. Patti being employed at Nancy’s firm provided great benefits once the initial employer-employee tension was addressed.  Patti eventually started speaking up about what she needed on her side of the creative process, which was the opposite of Nancy’s need to “talk through it.” It is important for people, especially introverts to articulate what they need.

A huge component of public speaking when seeking to engage audiences is inspiring and persuading them to take the action you desire. There are also non-verbal actions you can take to cement ideas, such as dispensing literature, or anything that can allow the audience to physically take an idea with them as well. When communicating with others for a desired outcome, you want to utilize motivating or warning symbols depending on the nature of your desired outcome.  Motivating symbols are used to encourage more action when some is taken and is best effective for smaller requests. Warning symbols are best suited for larger requests, where you must persuade someone by informing them of what they’re missing out on. Communication is crucial in all types of business, but there has been a departure from the type of marketing that just force feeds you an idea in lieu of those that appeal to you socially and emotionally.  With our newest crop of millennial social entrepreneurs and larger corporations finally “getting the memo”, this is a trend with no end in sight.

Ep108: Alison Kero on Increasing Energy by Decreasing Clutter

Ep108 Podcast Show Notes: Alison Kero, ACK Organizing

About Alison Kero

Alison Kero Increasing Energy Decreasing ClutterSince professional organizer and speaker Alison Kero started organizing in 2004, she’s searched for ways to make life easier. One of her favorite ways is to use self love as her decision making tool so she can easily determine what she likes, uses and needs in her life. Alison first started with physical clutter but soon realized she could transfer those same simple techniques into all her life’s decisions. Whether it’s who to spend time with, which activities to do or what objects to bring home, Alison has found her life improving because of her self-love decision making; including increased energy, productivity and overall contentment.

Key Conversation Points

Eliminating stress as an introvert through decluttering
Attaching memories to physical items
Organizing without guilt
Determining whether to keep or discard items
Putting yourself first
Recognizing the sources of clutter
Seeing the energy behind material things
Making self love based decisions

Detailed Conversation Highlights

Alison considers herself an introvert with strong empathic tendencies. During her in-person consultations, she would find herself constantly overwhelmed. As a solution, she started providing remote consultations over phone and video chat which allowed her to stay centered and give better consultations to her clients. Her discovery of creating a work situation that she loved came after two failed businesses that had the same issue; she was good at what she did, but she hated it. Once an opportunity opened up to help others organize their spaces, she realized how much she enjoyed it.

Clutter and other disorganization comes as a result of physical and emotional blocks.  The most extreme of these situations can turn a person into a “hoarder” via trauma, but even smaller amounts of clutter can tie into feelings of unworthiness and lack of motivation. Many fail to do anything about it, but its effects are still draining. Many issues relating to holding on to objects for too long lies in the fact that we attach emotions and memories to material objects. It is important to remember that your memories will always stay with you even if you don’t have the item. However, if a person has a joyous response to an item due to positive memories, it isn’t a drain or burden. Furthermore, it is important to note that it is never a good idea to abruptly remove an item before the person isn’t ready, as it can be damaging. Alternatives include taking a picture of the item before you let it go or otherwise documenting it.

When choosing which items to remove from your home or office, it helps to categorize and sub-categorize what you’re working with to avoid becoming overwhelmed. When organizing, go with your first instinct concerning the item; anything that you consider after that point will most likely be bargaining for the item and will not help you. It also helps to have designated spots for items that are routinely removed from your person so you won’t misplace them.  It is also helpful to keep similar items together. No matter which options you choose for removing clutter, the focus should be on removing items that are tied to fear, guilt, shame and other negative memories and emotions and keeping those that make you happy. After that point, you’ll be content and upkeep will be minimal.

Key Conversation Points

What it means to find the full range and capacity of your voice
Acknowledging how powerful our voices can be in shaping perceptions
Communicating more effectively through different voice types
Becoming more confident with your voice
Avoiding the feeling of “phoniness”
Being true to your own voice while creating excitement
Communicating appropriately for the occasion

Detailed Conversation Highlights

Barbara considers herself an ambivert, and acknowledges how that has helped her personally and professionally. She values introversion for her creative process and extroversion for her performances. Furthermore, she appreciates how her ambiversion allows her to connect with her vocal coaching students regardless of where they fall on the spectrum.

Aspects of her day job as a personal development consultant and her passion as a singer-songwriter collided when she was offered referrals for vocal coaching. Her book correlates vocal and leadership qualities with natural elements and demonstrates the best uses for each. Over the course of the episode, she demonstrates each vocal element (earth, fire, water, metal and air) and the best scenarios to use them to your advantage, particularly for introverts. When it comes to addressing others, how you convey your message can be just as important if not more important than the message itself.

The Peace of Wild Things

By Wendell Berry

When despair for the world grows in me

and I wake in the night at the least sound

in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,

I go and lie down where the wood drake

rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.

I come into the peace of wild things

who do not tax their lives with forethought

of grief. I come into the presence of still water.

And I feel above me the day-blind stars

waiting with their light. For a time

I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Ep106: Jenean Morrison on Adult Coloring Books and Success as an Introvert Artist Entrepreneur

Ep106 Show Notes: Jenean Morrison

About Jenean Morrison

Jenean Morrison Adult Coloring BooksJenean Morrison is a painter and surface/textile designer from Memphis, Tennessee. As a designer, her work can be found on rugs, fabrics, stationery and scrapbooking kits, with clients including Free Spirit Fabric, Fisher-Price, Sigg and Gelaskins. In 2012 she designed and published the first in a series of Pattern and Design Coloring Books. Today she has six titles available, including the most popular, Flower Designs Coloring Book, which remained on the Amazon Best-Seller list for over eight weeks in the spring of 2015. Four of her coloring books have been published by traditional publishers in France, Italy and Brazil. And her Flower Designs coloring book has also been published in Japan, with editions coming soon to Poland, Turkey, Czech Republic and Slovak Republic.

Key Conversation Points

Appreciating your “alone time”
Doing it for yourself, by yourself
Being creative and inspiring others, “co-creating” art with your audience
Managing increased exposure
Reaching out to media and other visibility opportunities
Understanding artist entrepreneurs
Embracing different types of creative stimulation
Managing transparency of artistic processes and business success

Detailed Conversation Highlights

Jenean describes herself as being a strong introvert. She recalls her introverted tendencies even in childhood. Over time, her increased understanding of introversion allowed her to see how important contemplative “alone time” is to artists. Jenean was one of the early pioneers responsible for today’s adult coloring book craze. Seeking to apply her background in surface design after being inspired by one of her childhood coloring books, she soon learned that she could self-publish her work through Amazon’s Createspace as opposed to dealing with publishers and other middlemen.

Adult coloring books have become increasingly popular, offering calm and focus, two states that entrepreneurs can lose connection with. Jenean shares how she coped with an increase in exposure because of the success of her books and how she discovered what methods were the most comfortable. She found that some social media outlets, for example, may be more compatible with how you share information. When dealing with people, getting to know who they are before you even speak can build rapport and make the approach less intimidating. It’s also important to realize that an artist’s entrepreneurial endeavors are just as valid as those in other fields. It is important to keep an open mind in regards to opportunities to grow and leverage your talents, as well as opportunities to make money.
