In Case You Missed It | August 6

Happy Friday, friends! Welcome to the latest In Case You Missed It. Just a reminder that this is a quick post that will happen every Friday afternoon with all the updates and links that have happened throughout the week. So, let's get to it:

ANNOUNCEMENTS

On Monday we announced our new 2021 AE December Daily® Creative Team. At the end of 2020, as we reflected on what we'd like to do different in 2021, we had the idea to gather a team specifically to provide inspiration surrounding this beloved annual project. We're honored to have these women join us and we're looking forward to the energy and creativity they bring to the process of documenting December stories. In the coming months look for project ideas, insights, videos, Story Chats, and more from this amazing group! We can’t wait to share their stories and tell stories alongside you in December. Head to the blog for the team and links to their Instagram profiles.

SALES

We kicked this month off with flash sales all week long! Today and tomorrow take advantage of a super fun $2 and under sale (some items will be as low as $0.25). This sale went live today at 7am PST and runs until 11:59pm EDT on Saturday.  At these prices, these items won't be around for long! Shop the sale here.

CLASSES

The Magic of Moments // Our newest photography class taught by Lisa Varshine went live this week and we are loving your response! The Magic of Moments is a photography class built around this simple idea: you have the most intimate access to your life and the people in it, take the pictures no one else can. Throughout the course of the workshop, Lisa will guide you through the process of finding your authentic voice, mastering your unique style, and capturing the magic in the everyday moments that make up your life. This class takes you on the journey from simply taking photos, to making them. In addition to Lisa’s content, this class will feature bonus conversations with talented photographers from our community, exercises, challenges, an amazing digital kit, and a bonus December Daily-themed photography lesson releasing later in the fall…all for $20. Click here for all of the details and to register.

CRAFT THE STORY YOUTUBE SERIES

Ali is back this week with a new video in her Craft The Story video series (Episode 29). In today's video Ali is sharing my thoughts on the question “what counts as a story in memory keeping?” Watch the video here.

What Counts As A Story In Memory Keeping

This past week I requested questions (via Instagram) for a Q+A about storytelling in memory keeping.

I received a wonderful range of questions that include topics that are really specific and others that are much more universal. After going through all the questions I decided that I'd like to spread them out over a few videos via a new series I'm calling Storytime. As I take a little time to organize your awesome questions into videos I'd like to start out this series by addressing this question first: what counts as a story in memory keeping?

To answer that question I dove into some of my past projects to talk about what "counts" as a story in memory keeping (spoiler: it all counts) and to encourage you to embrace a wide variety of storytelling techniques in your own memory keeping adventures.

Let's dive in:

For The Love Of Books | July 2021

I definitely felt like I was in an overall funk in July but that might have translated into getting a bunch of books read - which I'll take as a win for the month.

My favorites were Nothing To See Here and The Ones We're Meant To Find and The Push

Here's what I read this past month:

Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid: Enjoyed. Easy, quick summer read. If you've enjoyed other books from her you'll probably like this one too.

The Ones We're Meant To Find by Joan He: I am fascinated by people who are able to imagine/create/conceive other worlds and I kept coming back to that over and over with this story. At some points in the book I felt totally lost but I wasn’t deterred and basically became obsessed with finishing it. Probably not a story for everyone but I definitely find myself taken with dystopian narratives and the human choices along the way.

56 Days by Catherine Ryan Howard: This one was a like not a love.

Nothing To See Here by Kevin Wilson: Loved it. I’ve had this in my pile for a long time and I’m so glad I finally read it. Completely unique story full of heart.

The Push by Ashley Audrain: Whoa. Super heavy subject matter about mothers + children + partners but also amazingly good, richly detailed writing. I had a super hard time putting it down.

Happy reading!

Around Here : No Photo Story In My Summer Notebook

In today's
Craft The Story (episode #28) I'm sharing another page in my summer story notebook.

The story prompt "Around Here" is one I feel like I've done hundreds of times. It's something I come back to again + again because it's such an easy way to tell a story of what we are all up to and/or into at a given point in time. I find it especially helpful when I'm having trouble identifying a specific story to tell - this prompt grounds me in the present through the simple invitation to make a list of what's happening.

Let's dive in:

And here's a look at the finished project:

This is a story you can tell right now! Grab a piece of paper or open up the Notes app on your computer or phone and write up a few things about yourself and/or your family. Print it out and put it into a notebook. Remember that you can start anytime to tell the stories of your life.
