As a follow up to that video I wanted to share a look at where I'm at right now with getting started in my own album. In past year's I've shared all my foundation pages at one time in one post but I'm mixing it up this year and hoping to share more as I go as we get closer to December.

You can think of this as Part One of my foundation pages posts for 2021. I'll share images for each page in a later post.

My December Daily® Journey | Special Guest Shannan Manton

We are excited to kick off a new blog series with the incredibly talented Shannan Manton. Be on the lookout for weekly dose of her creative wisdom and inspiration in the realm of hybrid scrapbooking. We so grateful to have her here with us!

Hello December Daily friends! This is Shannan (shannan_pages on Instagram) - a digital scrapbooker from Sydney - and I’m going to be sharing my thoughts, ideas, and process around incorporating digital products into December Daily.

Normally I am not a person who gets into the Christmas spirit early. I have enough going on in my life that Christmas can wait for December. I grumble when the decorations go up in the stores earlier and earlier each year.

But we are not in normal times and coming out of a three-month lockdown here in Sydney, I am more than ready for some cheer, sparkle and something fun to work on. You early Christmas starters? I get you now.

This will be my 14th December Daily album and it’s my one consistent project. It’s such a treasure to have all of those festive stories from when my children were really little (Eli wasn’t even born the first time I did this project) and even now there is still so much to document each year.

Today I want to share some of my past projects as I make plans and gear up for this year.

I know I’m not alone in saying that December Daily is one of my favourite, and most valuable projects. In Australia, 1 December also marks the first day of summer so I love that my albums document the festive period as well as the change of rhythm as school finishes for the year  and we move into our summer routines and lifestyle. Even though it's a hectic time of year, I will always make time for this project.

I've made various versions of December Daily - homemade minibooks, 3x8, 4x8, 4x4 and quite a few 6x8s. Most of my recent albums are all-digital but I’ve incorporated digitals into my older ones too. Going digital means that you can buy things as you work on your album - there’s no waiting for things to arrive or worrying about items selling out. You can change the size and color of things and use them over and over.

Having done so many albums, I usually try and switch things up each year to keep it fun and interesting for me.  Last year, I made a conscious effort to concentrate on more thoughtful, introspective journaling, instead of the we-did-this style of documenting. I kept it very simple with a red theme and a focus on the words and photos, with a few digital embellishments in a 4x8 album. It wasn’t easy to write something substantial every day but I’m glad I did and this year I will do more minimal journaling - it’s all a balance.

In 2019, I felt the pull to do something small. Sometimes that’s all we can muster right? I made a little homemade hybrid 4x4 mini-book with binder rings and a chipboard cover. Each spread had a square photo and number on the left and a journal card or some digital embellishments with brief journaling on the right. Super do-able but also one of my faves and the direction I want to go in this year again.

In 2018, I made a 3x8 digital album using Ali’s overlays on top of a photo on the left everyday, and journaling or a card on the right. This is a system I have used consistently over my December Daily journey - I love a good rhythm and repetition.

For a few years, I made really simple 6x8 digital albums - nothing complicated, just a photo (or two) and a story every day, following the photo-on-the-left, journaling-on-the-right formula. I really liked the challenge of making sure I get at least one good enlargement-worthy photo a day.

And this was my very first one in 2008 - totally hand-made and very Ali-inspired. I had only been scrapbooking a few months and I have no idea where I found out about Ali and December Daily but I am so glad I did.

December Daily - it can be whatever you make it. Complex or simple. Large or small. Some years might be creative and full of techniques and play, other years you might just be able to pull off the bare minimum, if at all. And that’s OK.

Whichever way you go, just know that it will be worth it.

Create With Canva

Today we are delighted to welcome guest instructor Kim Hurst who is teaching our newest class, Create With Canva!

If you have ever struggled to learn Photoshop or the host of other apps and programs to work digital products, Kim designed this this class just for you. In this two-week workshop, Kim will introduce you to the technology of Canva, a free, design anywhere, graphic design platform that is filled with powerful tools for memory keepers.

Some of the things you'll learn in the class are:

How to upload, organize and store your digital files, right inside of CanvaTechniques for creating photo prints in multiple sizes for your pocket pagesIdeas for working with digital elements such as journal cards and digital stampsTips for playing with text and photosHow to create custom digital templates for your page layouts

Meet Kim and learn more about her new workshop in this video introduction!

Get to know Kim a little more in this quick Q&A!

Where are you from?

Originally I’m from Ontario, Canada (just outside of Toronto). But currently live Southern California (for the past 21 years) with my husband Ron, and the most amazing golden lab named Lincoln.    I also have two (now adult kids) my son, Mitch, 29 just moved out this summer, and my daughter, Meg, 24 who is still here at home with us.

A fun fact about you.

I love the smell of coffee.  But I can’t stand the taste of it.  LOL

When did you get started in scrapbooking?

Funny story actually, although I’ve been creating since I was a teenager; I learned to knit @13, wallpapered an entire room by myself @18, and countless crafts along the way, I avoided scrapbooking for the longest time.  Why?  Because I just knew I would absolutely love it, and want everything!   My friend didn’t give up though and finally dragged me to a creative memories crop in 2005.  Both things were true!    Shortly after that we would get together and scrapbook at my dining room table for days on end while our kids were in school.   I still have that first album, but so much about how I scrapbook has changed since then.

How did you get started using Canva?

Can you believe I discovered Canva through a google search?  In 2017 my employer at the time asked me to create a marketing ad for his business.  We didn’t have any design software, and I knew Word, Publisher & Power Point weren’t going to cut it, so I searched online for a solution.   I found Canva.  It was free…and very easy to learn.  And my marketing ad…it got a full page placement in a national publication.

What is your favorite AE project?

I love every project Ali does.  The albums I feel most proud of are my Week In The Life Albums.  But I love and have been following December Daily from the very beginning.  Since using Canva as my "go to" design tool I have completed 3 WITL albums and 2 DD albums without them taking weeks or even months to finish.

What is one thing you hope people take away from your class?

That’s a great question!  I’ll have to give you two for this one. Confidence & Accomplishment.  The confidence to try something new.  The joy of accomplishment when they complete their first page or finish their album using Canva.

Registration for Canva is still open, and the first lesson will be available on October 19th. Also, please note that to follow along with Kim's lessons, you will need your own Canva account. If you haven't created your free account yet, please sign up at Canva.com to create one now.

For The Love Of Books | August + September 2021

All kinds of enjoyable reading has been happening around here the last few months. Here's a look at what I read in August and September:

The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah | Started, stopped, and started again because I really wanted to get to the end. This one for me was a struggle to get through and I think it had to do with pacing. I appreciated learning about the migration to CA and what life looked like at that time for so many families but it just didn’t do it for me overall. I am a super fan of her last book The Great Alone and found that one super hard to put down.

Transcendent Kingdom by Yea Gyasi | This is one of the books in my pile that I started, stopped (for no other reason than I got distracted by another story), and then came back to and I’m so glad I did. I really liked her first book (Homegoing). I appreciated the thread of science + faith and how the main characters life was impacted by the choices of others in her family (and the choices she was faced with along the way).

The Damage by Caitlin Wahrer | Swallowed this one over a couple days. Decent pacing. The kind of book that always seems to launch me into a reading a bunch of books in a row. Solid but not amazing.

Not A Happy Family by Shari Lapena | Super fast read. All plot, no extra stuff. Satisfying vacation read for sure.

What Strange Paradise by Omar El Akkad | I need some friends to read this one so we can talk about it!

A Slow Fire Burning by Paula Hawkins | Not my favorite. I had a hard time picturing the characters for some reason and sometimes had to reread to remember which one was which. It was just okay for me.

Every Last Fear by Alex Finlay | I really enjoyed this thriller + the twists + turns. Couldn’t put down.

Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney | Totally satisfying thriller. Nothing wasted.

Irresistible: The Rise Of Addictive Technology + The Business Of Keeping Us Hooked by Adam Atler | Listened to this one (something I don't often do but am starting to do a bit more especially for nonfiction) after deciding to take a month-long IG break. I was looking for something to fuel some of the changes I'm wanting to make in my life + the content in this book supported those changes.

My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell | Found this one to be interesting + challenging.

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir | It took me awhile to get into this book mainly because of all the science. I’m so thankful to a friend who encouraged me to keep going. Totally worth it.

Happy reading!

Around The Yard | For The Love Of Dahlias

As I welcome the change of the seasons that October brings that means beginning to say goodbye to these dahlia blooms that have been such a gift this summer.

Back in mid-February of this year I decided that I wanted to be able to grow more dahlias and took steps over the months to be able to make that happen. In 2020 I successfully grew some directly in the ground along a portion of our back fence and I made the decision to expand that area by adding in a few more beds directly into the ground (vs. doing raised beds). I'm interested in the concept of regenerative agriculture and wanted to see if I could work on amending the current soil from the top down.

For 2021 I ordered all my dahlia tubers from Swan Island Dahlias and planted them alongside the ones I've ordered and were gifted to me from Floret.

Sam's sitting right in the area where I had success growing Floret dahlias in 2020 (photo from February 2021).

Over a period of weeks in March I began staking out and then filling in the beds with soil and compost.

In early April I made a bunch of trips to our local nursery for the dirt + compost. Next year I'll try to have it dumped in place since I now know that this space worked really well. The rock was leftover from a previous patio project a number of years ago.

In April I decided to add organic straw as a ground cover. I first cut up and layed cardboard underneath and then placed the straw on top.

At the front of each of the beds I also planted some lavender.

Some of the original dahlias from Floret that I left in the ground from 2020 started popping up as early as the end of April.

Month by month things slowly started coming up as the weather warmed up (the photo above was May 10th).

Mid-June.

The first official bloom this year was around June 20th.

July 4th (above).

July 20th.

August 4th.

And then this past week:

August 26th.

Last month I took a bunch of blooms and laid them out on poster board just to see the differences in the sizes, shapes, and colors.

Here's some of the blooms I've captured recently at the end of September. The colors here at what I consider the end of the season have been so amazing:

If you'd like to learn more about growing dahlias I highly recommend the book Discovering Dahlias by Floret's Erin Benzakein

All kinds of magic happened in those beds this year. The time + energy was totally worth it and I can't wait to do it all again next year.

5 Tips For Getting Ready For December Daily®

In today's Craft The Story video I'm talking about five ideas for getting ready for documenting December Daily® this holiday season.

One of the things I've learned over the years of embarking on this project is that a little thinking + planning ahead can make the overall process more enjoyable. Around here I've started the process for myself and put those ideas into a video to share with you today.

Quick reminder that our Order Selection Period for December Daily® 2021 has closed. The products with stock remaining will be available in our "regular" shop on October 4th at 12pm EST and regular shipping rates apply. Order Selection Period boxes will begin shipping on October 11th, 2021.

Let's dive in to today's video:

STEP ONE: BEGIN GATHERING SUPPLIES

For me this step includes three main things: (1) taking stock of what I have, (2) restocking basics, and (3) shopping for new products to support my stories this season. Last year I put together a video showing how I clean up and organize my products once my project is complete. You can see that here

For supply restocks I generally make sure to have some of the following:

Printer Ink (you can read more about the printers I use  here )
Printer Paper
Black StazOn
Scotch Rolling AdhesiveRed Line Tape
Avery Index Tabs
Printable Vellum + Colorful VellumGrafix Transparent/Plastic Sheets (I use these as foundations for clear pages)
Pens: Precision PenSlick WriterWhite Cardstock Tiny Attacher RefillsSTEP TWO: REVISIT PAST PROJECTS

One of my favorite steps in my personal process of getting ready for December Daily® is taking a little time to go back through my past albums and establish what worked + what didn't work. As I flip through my past albums I look for both story ideas I might want to repeat again (same jumping off point with a new story for a new year) + design ideas I might want to repeat or expand on this year.

I recently shared a video walkthrough of my 2020 album and you can watch that here

If you are brand new to this project I'd encourage you to spend a little time watching some overview videos on YouTube and/or scrolling back through past posts in our
December Daily® Facebook Group. Seeing what other people have done in the past is a great jumping off point for establishing how you'd like to embark on this project this year. Please remember that people approach this project in a wide variety of ways and there's no right or wrong! Getting your own stories told is what this is all about.

STEP THREE: WHAT KINDS OF STORIES DO YOU WANT TO TELL THIS YEAR?

There are a couple ways you can begin to think about what kinds of stories you might want to tell this year:

Look through your past projects + select some story prompts you'd like to repeat again this year.
Once you receive your box of supplies go through them and look specially for the products that spark stories. We design products with storytelling in mind and specifically integrate prompts and story invitations into many of our products. Many of the products are wonderful jumping off points for stories to tell this year.
Think about what might be different in your life from last year. Are there any specific milestones for any family members this year? Is there something specific you want to focus on in your storytelling this time around?

It's usually during this step that I start thinking about my Reason Why for the year. I love starting my album with an intention/reason why - it helps me set the tone for the season and is a piece of the process that I've really come to love each year. Setting a reason why might also spark some stories that you'll want to capture or things you want to be on the lookout for during the month.

STEP FOUR: TAKE A CLASS

Many in our community love to revisit our classic Storytelling With December Daily® workshop each year before embarking on this project again. It's a great refresher - or starting place if you are new - and helps you establish your own personal storytelling mindset for this project this year.

I'm totally looking forward to the upcoming Product Play: Back To Basics which is new for 2021. For the entire month of November our team will be bringing you one idea per day. More details on this workshop can be found here

STEP FIVE: PLAN SOME PAGES IN ADVANCE

One of the ways I set myself up for storytelling success each year is by creating or starting some of my pages in advance. I call these "started" pages "foundation pages." The way I create foundation pages has evolved over the years as my own take on the project has evolved. These days I don't number every day/story before the month begins and some pages are much father along in the process than others.

Some people love foundation pages and others don't like them at all which is totally okay. I personally enjoy the process of going though my products and using those to help guide my stories. Some foundation pages I create are really specific and complete (meaning all they need is a photo and some words) and others are significantly more open-ended. I'll be sharing my full foundation page post here on the blog later in October.

A couple things to remember with foundation pages:

You don't have to plan out every single story or every single day. Foundation pages can be as simple as going through all your product and picking out some things you know you want to work with this year and slipping those into some of the divided page protectors. Foundation pages are a great opportunity to get some of the crafty things done in advance such as painting, embossing, stitching, etc.

See my large archive of past foundation page posts (with images + video) here

I hope today's post gives you some things to think about while you wait for your box to arrive and for the holiday season to begin!

December Daily® 2021 | Start Here

Ali began documenting her December with this project in 2007. Many of us in the community have been following along for years, some for a decade or more. But, some of us have only been participating for a few years, and for quite a few people this might be your first year participating in December Daily®. First and foremost, welcome! We're so looking forward to telling these stories alongside you. Thinking back to my first year, I loved scouring these platforms for any tips and tricks that might make this project feel less overwhelming. With that in mind, we thought we'd share some project basics and some sage advice from a few of our December Daily® Creative Team members.

What is December Daily®?

December Daily® is a December mini-album project that documents the 25 days leading up to Christmas. The simple goal is to capture the spirit of December via one story per day. Some people start their album in November with stories of selecting their Christmas tree or decorating their houses. Some people end their album on the 31st. Some people tell their stories by calendar days, meaning the first story in their album happens on December 1st. Some people work on their album every day in December. Some people what till January to get started. Some people finish their albums, some people don't. The important thing to remember, as with all of our projects, is that you are the boss. There are no December Daily® police. There is no right or wrong way to do this project.

What products do I need?

Each year we release a collection of products designed to support your storytelling for this project. The collection includes a variety of album sizes, several kits, stamps, embellishment, papers, inks, and more. You can use as little as you want, or as much as you want. If this is your first year, we often recommend purchasing one of our main kits and an album of your choice.

I need more guidance!

You are in luck. We have a variety of resources if you are looking to learn more about the project, or dive deeper into storytelling, explore digital elements, or even specifically to play with product. Most of the resources are free. We recommend you start here on the blog. Ali has decades of blog posts available talking about every facet of December Daily®. Each year, she shares her process for every page she creates here on the blog.

I want to take a class!

We have a wide variety of classes available on this project. Feel free to scroll through our class selection! Here are a few classes that we consider core offerings:

Storytelling with December Daily®

Product Play: Back to Basics

Product Play 4

December Daily® Product Play Bundle (1,2,3)

I need more inspiration!

We invite you to follow us on our December Daily® Instagram account or join us in the December Daily® Facebook Group. This community consistently astonishes us with their creativity and enthusiasm for this project. Also, check out Ali's YouTube channel for process videos for each of her pages and walkthroughs of her completed albums.

We hope this post has provided those of you who might be new to the community with a good place to start. Please feel free to ask questions in the comments, and we'd like to wrap up our post with some advice from our Creative Team.

Ashley Horton | Keep it simple. Focus on the photo/photos, story and add a few embellishments.

Pascha Shepard | Search hashtags for inspiration, design for yourself, buy what you know you’ll use. Choose three main colors.

Neela Nalam | Stock up on basic supplies like adhesives, photo paper, printer cartridges to ensure continuity.

Yin Goh | Make a list of page ideas /stories to tell / photos to take before December rolls around.

Kari Stiles | Take your camera with you everyday in December. No matter where you’re going, or what you have planned. Even if all you do is take one photograph everyday you did a December Daily.

Emily Stebbins | Your pages do not have to be masterpieces! There's a fine line between finding inspiration and getting overwhelmed. Find one or two simple design formulas you can repeat (e.g. a full page photo + half page journaling) That way you can spend your energy on the stories rather than the layout of the page!

Nolana E. Lynch | Decide on your set up for the year - album, colour scheme, kits / papers, embellishments you'll need to set up album. Write a list of stories, events, traditions, you'd like to document this year. If there are specific dates for things that can be added to your calendar for December, begin adding them in to get an idea of what you will be documenting and inspiration for what your pages may look like each day. Design and Create Foundation pages early, but at your own pace - it should be fun and enjoyable (Pro Tip: play your favourite Christmas music and grab your favourite Christmas drink while you do this!) and it helps make documenting stories more do-able in December. Do Product Play lessons and Prep Day for inspiration- these really broaden your horizon and you get a brilliant idea of what projects are your style, what you'd love to attempt and play around with for your December Daily.

Jill Drangsholt | Let go of the expectation to finish your pages daily like Ali does. She shares daily to provide us inspiration, not as an example of the "right" way to finish the project. There is no right way. I like to start my project just taking photos for the first week or so. Then a week or two into December I will start putting pages together. This process works for me because by mid December I have a good number of photos and stories to pull from and I put them in whatever makes most sense for my album.
