One Little Word® Ten | Workshop Updates + Guest Instructors

The
One Little Word® workshop is celebrating 10 years in 2021.

In 2006 I began a tradition of choosing one word for myself each January – a word that I can focus on, meditate on, and reflect upon as I go about my daily life. My words have included play, peace, vitality, nurture, story, light, up, open, thrive, give, whole, connect, space, habit, and less. These words have each become a part of my life in one way or another and all are threads that help weave together the story of my life. They’ve been imbedded into who I am, and into who I’m becoming. They’ve been what I’ve needed and what I didn’t know I needed. They’ve helped me to breathe deeper, to see clearer, and to grow.

In 2011 I offered my first year-long One Little Word® workshop in an attempt to help me stay in touch with my word and make it more visible in my daily life.
It worked. I've been more connected to my words these past few years because of the specific actions and reflections I've put together for the workshop. For the last 120 consecutive months I've presented a monthly prompt that invites our One Little Word® community to reconnect with their chosen word of the year in an online classroom environment.

In one of
Brené Brown's recent podcast episodes she mentioned something that really resonated with me, especially as I thought through including Guest Instructors this year: I want to be a learner rather than the knower. Not only do I want to be that, I need to be that because that's how I grow. That's how we all grow.

To celebrate 10 years we are making some changes to the 12-month workshop, including welcoming eight women as guest instructors. These are all women I admire for one reason or another and are all women who believe in the power of words to make a difference in our lives. Each one of them brings something unique to the community through their creative pursuits and through their lived experiences and I am so excited to learn from them this year.

These women will lead the presentation of many of the prompts, with the exception of January, June, August + December (I will lead those). In addition to the monthly prompt there will also be a live chat each month featuring a conversation between the Guest Instructor and myself talking about the prompt and our experiences with our word. I'm super excited about bringing this to the monthly content - we can learn so much from each other through the process of unscripted conversation.

I will be here, working right alongside you as always, as we make our way through the year with our words. I'll also share my own take on the prompts each month.

I don't know if I can adequately express how excited I am to be bringing in these other voices. I feel so much gratitude to those of you who have kept showing up to this project year after year. I know change can be a challenge and I appreciate you trusting that this will be a change for the good.

Things to expect in 2021:

Guest instructors who will bring their own unique voices to the monthly prompts. Some prompts will be similar to year's past and others will be new. I picked instructors specifically based on their own areas of passion/interest and I'm empowering all of them to share their own experiences + create their own prompts if that makes sense for them.
A live monthly conversation where the Guest Instructor and I will talk about the prompt, how it's going with their word, and take questions from the community. All chats will be recorded + shared in the classroom. The day/time for these conversations will be determined later.
A private Facebook group for community + conversation + connection.
A weekly thought-filled Monday email message from either Ali or the Guest Instructors.
Monthly PDF handout + process videos that outline the prompt each month and dive deeper into a way that specific way to connect with your word.
One Little Word® Digital Main Kit (available upon registration in the classroom). Value $14.49.
A wonderful, wholehearted passionate community of people living with their own word right alongside you.

For less than $4 per month you can join us in this 10th anniversary documenting adventure. The early bird workshop price will be $45 and after January 1, 2021 it will be $50 for 12 months of content related to making your word visible in your life.

Maybe you've participated one or more times in the last ten years. Maybe this is your first year. Either way, consider yourself invited to dive in to choosing + living with + documenting life with One Little Word® Ten in 2021. Registration opens on Wednesday, December 16th at 9am Pacific.

The One Little Word® workshop also makes a really nice "experience" gift. You can select that option on the shop page.

Remember: You are powerful, beautiful, brilliant, and brave.

Scrappy Sisters PodcastCURIOUS ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP?

In 2018 I recored a video walkthrough of my One Little Word® albums spanning 2011 through 2017 and I wanted to share it again today in case you are new to this project and are wondering what a One Little Word® album might look like. Keep in mind that a wide variety of people participate in this workshop, many of whom would never consider themselves scrapbookers but who resonate with the idea of making their word visible through documentation and participating in a workshop that encourages + supports that experience.

Some people just listen to the prompts each month and others work in a notebook and others use products from their stash and others print out the digital version of the kit and others follow along as close as possible to what I do in my album.
All those approaches are welcome here. My hope in sharing this video is to simply give you an idea of what my own personal albums look like year after year and invite you to join our community.

As always, thank you for being a part of this community.

One Little Word® products for 2021 will be live this Wednesday at 9am AM Pacific.

This year we are offering a Main Kit, one 6x8 album option, one stitched notebook option, an updated journal, a small selection of shop products, and quarterly Mini Kit auto-ship option.

SHIPPING SPECIAL: Use promo code OLW2021SHIP to receive free domestic shipping ($15 international flat rate) when you spend $60+ in the One Little Word® category. Must enter promo code at checkout to receive special shipping offer. Cart must include a minimum subtotal of $60 from the One Little Word® shop category to qualify. Q1 Mini Kit and custom products do not count towards minimum subtotal. Class purchases do not count towards the free shipping threshold. Refunds will not be issued for forgotten or misused promo codes. Offer subject to change.

Please note that we will be prioritizing international shipping for this release.

Digital One Little Word® products will be released on the first Friday in January. Registration for the One Little Word® workshop includes the Digital Main Kit and will be available to you in the classroom upon registration.

2021 Workshop details will be posted tomorrow + registration will open on December 16th

Here's a video overview of the collection:

Here's a look at the product images:

MAIN KIT // $39.99

This year's Main Kit includes 3x4 journal cards, 6x8 prompt pages, 3x4 vellum quotes, plastic shapes, stitched felt butterflies, fabric months, chipboard hearts, cork hearts/stars/butterflies, wood veneer words, a tag set, and washi tape.

After polling the community this past year we encountered a number of requests for some variation in the color scheme beyond black and white so we've added in some creams and beiges. We generally kit this kit fairly natural so people can add in colors they feel go with their words.

The digital version of the Main Kit is included with the One Little Word® workshop.

MINI KIT (AUTO-SHIP) // $25

This past year we introduced a new product option for One Little Word®. Purchasing the first One Little Word® Mini Kit commits you to an "auto-shipment" + charge of the remaining three kits at the time of their shipping. The remaining three kits will be charged + shipped on/around 3/15/21, 6/15/21, 9/15/21.
You can see the Mini Kits that were offered in 2020 here

We hope that spreading out the kits throughout the course of the year will do two things: (1) help keep you continue to connect to your word by giving you products you can use as you make your word visible in your album throughout the year, and (2) spread out the cost over the course of the year rather than a bigger purchase all at once (since we totally get that this is a busy time for spending).

The Mini Kits will ship free for domestic customers/$4 for international customers. The Mini Kit is excluded from the shipping threshold minimum for the shipping special.

If any kits remain after we've shipped to subscribers then we will add them to the shop for $30.

6x8 CHIPBOARD ALBUM WITH PAGE PROTECTORS + CHIPBOARD DIVIDERS // $35.99

For 2021 we have bundled the page protectors + monthly dividers together with the 6x8 album. This year the dividers are a thin chipboard with the monthly tabs along the outside edge. This chipboard is way, way thinner than a few years ago when we did chipboard dividers.

PLEATHER FOLIO // $19.99

We've heard from some members of our One Little Word® community that they would like a different option for documenting their experience with their word. We know not everyone who participates in this project considers themselves a "scrapbooker" and this might be a wonderful option if you find yourself in that camp or maybe you just want to try something different this year.

The Pleather Folio comes with a blank notebook.

STITCHED JOURNAL // $14.99

We've updated the spiral notebook we've offered in past years to a stitched notebook. This is a wonderful supplement to the One Little Word® workshop and includes additional prompts to help you stay connected to your word throughout the year. This year we've also added blank pages between each month for those of you who might want to add in prompts from the workshop.

The stitched journal fits right into the pleather folio.

YEAR OF REFLECTION 6x8 PAGES // TBA

One of the requests that came out of feedback from last year was to offer the monthly reflection pages (found in the journal) as stand-alone 6x8 pages. We were able to do that and offer those for you this year.

WORDS MATTER DECAL STICKER // $2.99

And something just a little fun: a small wonky circle decal sticker.

4x6 STAMPS // $15.99 EACH

6x8 STAMPS // $24.99

CUSTOM MUGS // $17.99

This year we are also offering custom
One Little Word® mugs as a way to make your word visible in your daily life. Details on ordering can be found here

Please note: For 2021 we aren't able to offer the custom acrylic words as in past years. If you are looking for a cut out word we highly recommend our friend Colleen Attara

DIGITAL WORDS: While we are not able to offer custom digital words at this time, we do have a large catalog of handwritten digital words and it's totally possible your word might be there. Check it out here.

THANK YOU

Thank you so much for your support of this project over the years. Tomorrow I'll share a blog post with additional information about this year's workshop which is celebrating it's 10th anniversary. I'm super excited about some changes we are making in honor of the past 10 years and can't wait to start making our words visible together in 2021.

December Daily® 2020 | Story Thirteen

I've really been looking forward to adding a story to this page ever since putting it together for the December Daily® Product Play 4 workshop (if you are new to December Daily® at this point in the season my workshops are always still available for you if you are looking for more fun ideas for your stories - they are go at your own pace). One of the themes for 2020 was texture and it was so fun to create these texture ("frosting") circles using texture paste and paired them with circles cut from Main Kit journaling cards.

Here's a look at how this one came together:

Now let's take a closer look via images:

For today's story I paired the back of Day 12 (half circle page) with a transparent page which is home to six circles. Just like yesterday I printed my photo sized 8.25 x 8.25 before trimming it to fit the half circle shape. On top of that half circle I used a Precision Pen to write a couple details about our cupcake decorating.

On the second page (an original foundation page) I used Willamette Ink + an upper case alpha stamp to add "cup cake" to the top circle. I also used a number stamp set red tinsel embossing powder to create the 13 on another circle.

On the bottom journaling circle I printed out a 1.75 inch circle and added it on top using foam adhesive

Totally love how this one turned out!

December Daily® 2020 | Story Twelve

For my 12th December Daily® story I decided to feature the wrapping paper I'm using this year (from Paper SourceAnthropologie).

I knew I would be working with the half-circle base page because I want to use the other side for a story tomorrow. My initial idea turned into a fun adventure adding a bunch of word/phrase pieces and turning the whole half circle into a shaker. Check out the video for the full how-to details.

As you'll see above today's story doesn't include any words. You could easily add a story in the location where I added word/phrase stickers or add a second half circle if you have a longer story. I honestly didn't have much to say about the papers this time around so this approach worked just fine for me today.

Here's a look at how this one came together:

Now let's take a closer look via images:

I initially printed my wrapping paper photo into a square that was 8.25 inches x 8.25 inches. I used the half-circle die cut as my template to trim out the photo. I intentionally took the photo of my wrapping paper with a white top section so I could add something to the top - that ended up being word/phrase stickers.

Next I grabbed a piece of thinner transparency and cut it to the same half circle shape. I ran the transparency and the photo page through my sewing machine + left an opening that allowed me to add in the green sequins, the white sequins, the chipboard heart, and the white wood stars. After adding all those pieces I stitched the hole closed.

This was seriously so fun to make and just made me happy while making it.

On the outside I added the #12 using white puffy number stickers and a phrase from the perforated phrases in the Main Kit.

December Daily® 2020 | Story Eleven

Christmas lists/letters to Santa are something I include each year in my December Daily® project.

This year I decided to simply use the large envelope from the December Daily® 2020 Envelope Bundle to hold all the different kids lists that were printed out after collecting them from the kids (with the exception of Anna who chose to handwrite her list). I added pattern paper to the back of each of the various sizes + shapes of the kids lists and stamped their initials on tab stickers

Here's a look at how this one came together:

Now let's take a closer look via images:

In today's video I talk about other ways you could add in your wish/Santa lists. Remember you don't have to be a kid to document your wish list!

I loved the ease of using the envelope as a home for these little stories. On the outside I added a chipboard number, a gold star, "Santa list" chipboard, and two pieces from the perforated strip set - all these were included in the Main Kit this year.

On the inside I corralled all the kids lists I had access to right now. Aaron has Isaac's (he mostly wants components to build a computer) and these were gathered from texts, the Notes App, and Anna's handwritten list. I decided to take each of those printed pieces and pair them with pattern paper from my stash.

To designate each of the lists I used blank tab stickers + this 3x4 alpha stamp set to add their initials.

On top of each piece of pattern paper (with the lists inside or on the other side) I added a metal rimmed circle tag with one of the fabric circles from the Main Kit on top.

Lots of tech supplies on our kids lists. Elliott included at least three different kinds of headphones.

My favorite thing that Anna asked for is a towel warmer.

Always legos. Always Star Wars.

I'm thinking I'll have Audrey write a few more things in this spot on her page. I took the texts she sent me and brought all the images together on one page before printing.

December Daily® 2020 | Story Ten

Welcome to December Daily® 2020 | Story Ten.

For my tenth story this year I decided to keep it really simple. I love the mix of craftiness + simplicity that is a part of the whole of my album and I love having a few easy + simple ideas in my back pocket for days when I've either got a lot or not a lot on my plate.

What is one small moment of magic you can find + document today?

Here's a look at the process:

And here are some additional photos of my finished story:

Today's story was prompted by one of the 4x6 cards in the Main Kit that focuses on finding magic in small moments. I knew that a small moment of joy/magic for me each day is checking in on my paperwhite + amaryllis bulbs to see where they are at in their growing cycle. I went downstairs, snapped a couple photos, came back upstairs and printed my photo and got to work on my page.

Adding 4x6 cards directly into your album is a great way to dip your toes into having elements of your project exist outside the page protectors. I simply adhered the card back to back with my photo on three sides (leaving off adhesive along the top so I can create a pocket for my 3x4 journal card) and punched the two holes so the card would sit in the middle of the rings.

I could have added journaling directly to my photo before printing but decided instead to simply handwrite my story on one of the 3x4 journal cards from the Main Kit. I adhered that card back to back with one of the sentiment cards from the Main Kit and added an Avery Index Tab along the top and slipped two of the perforated phrases from the Main Kit inside. For the story # I used the white puffy numbers.

On top of the 4x6 sentiment card I also added a cork star and I tucked one of the December Daily® tabs in between the 4x6 sentiment card and photo.

I'm seriously loving all the different sizes and textures and layers within my album this year.

Remember my friends, this project is more of a marathon than a sprint. Give yourself grace as you look for and record the stories. You've got this.

December Daily® 2020 | Story Nine

Welcome to
December Daily® 2020 | Story Nine.

For today's story I decided to document a few things related to my phone right now. I took three screenshots and added them to a tag book I created when I put my
foundation pages together. I love bringing in everyday life stories like this into my project. These tags are a perfect place to hold all kinds of stories and the story you choose might be totally different - make it work for you!

Let's start with the process video:

Here's a look at how it turned out:

When I put my foundation pages together a couple months ago I knew I wanted to create a little tag book using two of the wood veneer pieces from the Main Kit. I didn't know what kind of story I would end up adding but I knew I could figure something out. As I considered stories for today I decided I wanted to document a bit about what I've been into on my phone lately.

One of the changes I made from my foundation pages was adding in a
Grafix Transparent Sheet that slips into the transparent pocket (that was from the 2019 December Daily® collection). I added this sheet mainly because I wanted space for a title but it also holds it in place in the album a bit better.

I cut out the "on my phone" word art using my
Silhouette and adhered it using rolling adhesive onto the transparent sheet along with a tiny red felt heart. I've included the word art for you below as a free download.

Download the free digital word art here.

On the inside of this tag booklet I added screenshots. I did one of my Home Screen, one of a text with Anna, and one of a recent
New York Times crossword (I'm obsessed). The screenshots went into my photo library and I cropped them to 3x4 before printing.

For my journaling I decided to use the space on the back of the tags. I repeat stamped a date stamp along the top and then used a
Brush Pen for my actual journaling.

December Daily® 2020 | Story Eight

Welcome to December Daily® 2020 | Story Eight.

Today's story is a little bit of writing about my own working life in December.

Today's video is full of me making mistakes + trying different things + muttering to myself +finally embracing the end result. I know I'm not alone in running into issues when creating + I want to make sure you guys know I'm right there with you! I hope you find a few moments to laugh during the video.

Let's start with the process video:

Now let's take a look at my finished page via photos:

This simple page surprisingly took me way longer than I expected. My initial plan didn't work (you'll see that in the video) so I pivoted and ended up with a page that focuses more than anything on the words + photos.

I've got a small laser printer here at home and I set up my page with the "working" word art on top (download available for you below). After printing with the laser printer I ran the title through the Minc machine with green foil and then I ran the page with the title back through the printer to add my journaling.

Along the edge I added one of the Fabric Half-Circle phrases

My photo was printed to 6 inches x 3 inches and adhered along the bottom of the journaling. Between the photo and journaling I used red line tape to adhere my light green pom trim on top.

I cut off one of the poms and used green embroidery floss to attach one of the gold stars from the Main Kit and a Crate Paper Charm

You could also print both your title + journaling at the same time before running it through a Minc machine. I decided I just wanted the title foiled.

And in the end:

I cut the poms off. Ha. Yep. That's how it all went down today.
