A bit of a scare

Last night, right before I went to bed, I had a scare. My mother called to tell me my dad "slipped" out of his wheelchair a few hours earlier and the nursing home wanted to know which hospital he should be taken to. She opted for the VA in West Palm Beach, but she hadn't asked if he was ok and by now, midnight, she was being told that she could call back in an hour to ask more questions. She had already taken a sleeping pill a couple of hours earlier so didn't think she could wait up.

I had j...

Very Violent Very Political

I'm not at all familiar with M.I.A., but found this video for her song "Born Free" fascinating, as have (apparently) lots of other folk. Here, you can see Born Free and read jezebel's commentary on it.

Graphic Violence and some nudity

Good news re: Peter Watts

On April 26 Canadian author Peter Watts was sentenced to a 60-day jail term suspended upon payment of court assessments — $68 state minimum costs, $60 victim rights, $1000 court costs and $500 fines.

Of course, the best news would have been that he didn't have to pay any fine and that he actually received an apology from the US government. But I'm relieved at this outcome. He's on his way home.

The end of Angel, and a couple of movies

I finally finished Angel last night and really enjoyed it. As one of the cast or crew remarked in an interview I watched afterward, Whedon really doesn't like happy endings. It was satisfying though. I'll miss the characters, as I missed everyone from Buffy, Deadwood Carnivale, The Sopranos, and Monk.

I also watched Lady in the Lake starring and directed by Robert Montgomery based on Raymond Chandler. I think it's best known for its gimmick of shooting everything from Philip Marlow's pov. Inte...

Preface to The Beastly Bride edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling

Here's the preface to our new YA anthology The Beastly Bride .

Some time in the next few weeks Charles Tan will be conducting a series of interviewing with each contributor. I'm not sure yet where they'll be running, but will let you all know when I know and when they start.

Werewolves, vampire bats, fox demons, the Animagi in the Harry Potter books, and Beast Boy/Changeling in the Teen Titans comics. What do all these characters have in common? They are shape-shifters. More specifically, the...

Photos from April 21, 2010 KGB with Jeffrey Ford and Richard Bowes

Rick and Jeff were fantastic! Rick read the most perfect story he could for KGB called "Venues," coming out soon in F&SF--afterward, Dan the bartender told me he and everyone else in the back cracked up--funny story.

Jeff's was a gorgeously told period piece called "Polka Dots and Moonbeams" that will be coming out in the anthology Stories.
