Free online summer camp for kids: book writing for teens

I planned to spend my summer indoors quietly catching up on my backlist of YA fantasy and scifi novels and maybe doing a bit of book editing. But Ive also been wishing I had a way to help out more and share my expertise.

I practically grew up at summer camps, spending 3 months a year for almost a decade deep in the woods teaching basketry, canoeing or wilderness survival, but this summer of course

A beautiful conclusion to an epic story

Loved everything about this sequel, which I’ve been waiting for. A unique ya fantasy with magic, steampunk elements, strong female characters, non-binary love interests and a sense of cultural history

“Start writing, no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on.” —Louis L’Amour”
Derek Murphy, How to Write, Format, Publish and Promote your Book

“Merrow have long memories. And remember, we live longer. So while most humans have forgotten the brutality and injustice that led to the merrow wars, the older merrow are still angry. They hate all humans. And now that the royal family is missing… some merrow think it’s time to stop hiding. They argue that the humans are destroying the world, and that it’s our duty to wipe them out.”

“Wait—what?” He’d said the last statement so casually, I almost didn’t grasp its significance. “There are merrow who want to destroy the human race?” I pictured a hundred thousand Sebastians, capable of punching through picnic tables and moving faster than we could even see them. It would be a slaughter. A mermaid apocalypse. I almost laughed at the thought, but the impulse died in my throat. I felt sick. I couldn’t believe I’d wanted to kiss him just a few moments ago.”

“I watched the colored lights and sparkles coming off of Sebastian in the dark water, as the ocean began the process of rebuilding his tail. I longed to join him in the water, to wrap my arms around him and let him carry me under the sea; but I wasn't ready. For him, the ocean was a home; for me it was death. Without being able to transform, the ocean depths would suffocate me, the pressure collapse my bones and flesh.”
D.S. Murphy, Shearwater

“Part of me felt like I was throwing my life away, for a guy I barely knew. But I wasn’t just doing it for him. Since my parents died, I’d had absolutely no control over my life. If I really thought about it, maybe I’d given up control long before—that day in Oregon when I almost drowned. Since then, I’d always relied on others to take care of me. Maybe it was time to take my life back into my own hands… even if it meant growing fins.”
