this was his soul made flesh, the truth of him laid bare in the blazing sun, shorn of mystery and shadow. this was the truth behind the handsome face and the miraculous powers, the truth that was the dead and empty space between the stars, a wasteland peopled by frightened monsters.

Seth's Blog: The roller coaster of shipping

Seth's Blog: The roller coaster of shipping:

michaeldantedimartino:

A pretty concise and accurate description of the creative process.  If you haven’t read Seth Godin’s blog before, check it out.  He’s part business guy, part artist, part motivational speaker.  I just read his latest book, “The Icarus Deception.” It will inspire you to make art, whatever your “art” is.

Okay, this has NOTHING to do with “shipping” in the tumblr context, but everything to do with making art. Very useful and encouraging for anyone engaged in the creative process.

But I’d just like to add… maybe it’s because I’m so new to this, but I feel like my chart looks more like a whackadoo EKG. I experience the highs and lows that Seth mentioned, but I also go through all of these mad, jagged spikes and troughs that seem spurred less by external obstacles or critical feedback than by self doubt and the occasional delusion of grandeur.

Hi Leigh! I'm so excited for S&S I can't stand it! What are some songs that inspired Siege and Storm?

Okay, the crazy part of this is that I finished the first draft of Siege and Storm over a year ago, so the songs aren’t fresh in my head. (All I can think of right now is Ruin and Rising.) BUT… I can tell you that Bowie’s “Man Who Sold the World” is on the list, along with “Stubborn Love” by the Lumineers. (Also, thanks to lightispaintingshadows, Demons and Radioactive by Imagine Dragons worked their way in there on revisions.)

I’m going to dig back through my files and post full playlists when we get closer to release date :)

Do you listen to music while you write? :) If you do, can you name a few songs that you like? :D :D S&B <3

Thank you!! Honored to have made your top ten

There are two ways I listen to music when I write:

1. White noise i.e. music without words or where the words just kind of fade into the background: The XX (entire chapters of Ruin and Rising were written with “intro” on repeat), Four Tet, Bass Nectar, Ratatat.

2. Emotional prompts - For Shadow and Bone, Placebo’s cover of “Running Up That Hill” was pretty much the Darkling’s theme music.  “Winter Song” was Alina’s song for her time at the Little Palace.

If you’d like to see more, I posted an extensive Shadow and Bone playlist at Wondrous Reads (under the original UK title, The Gathering Dark.)

(And oh my word, there are certain songs I’ll never be able to hear again without thinking of scenes in Ruin and Rising.)

As a single lady, I will be spending this Thursday with my true loves: good books and awful puns.

Oh. My. Good. Gravy. THIS IS GENIUS.

Why do so many authors write in a girls perspective? Is it because it is easier to write than a boys perspective? Or is it because girls but the books and mostly read?

Hmm… I don’t think a character’s gender makes him or her easier to write. And I can’t speak for other authors, but when I began work on Shadow and Bone, I didn’t think, “I should write a story with a female heroine because ladies like that.” I sat down to tell the story in my head and that happened to focus on a sour, scrawny refugee from Ravka.

I also think readers (male and female) are willing to read across gender lines.

That said, while I’m seeing more male POV and multiple POV in YA, there’s no question that female POV (as first person or third person assigned) still dominates the Young Adult category. Why? Well, I think it’s worth noticing that this definitely isn’t true for the rest of fiction.

Maybe that’s one of the reasons YA is so popular. Maybe the market wanted more and different stories told from the female perspective. Maybe readers were hungry for them.

In YA, we get books that give what girls and women think, feel, and desire a position of primacy. I suspect this freaks people out a little (a lot) and that’s why we get so much handwringing over Young Adult and now New Adult.

Shadow and Bone Party - Fabikator Workshop + Ravkan Food

Tablescape created using inspiration from the Fabrikator workshop description on page 127 of Leigh Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone and Ravkan food described in her Shadow and Bone and The Witch of Duva (and a little Figes’ Natasha’s Dance thrown in for good measure).

Thanks again to the a.maz.ing Leigh Bardugo for joining us by Skype.

Look at this!! Just LOOK. O_O

I want to be in this awesome book club. One member dressed up as the Shadow Fold! And one made Alina’s mirrored gloves! And Genya was there, too!

So much

Alina and Mal on the run in chapter 18

I took some artistic liberties — this scene doesn’t actually take place in the woods but I really wanted to draw birch trees! They are just so pretty *_* And I totally left out their warm fur coats… in the book they are all huddled and freezing, oops.

Also I made a gif version.

The birches look beautiful and this is just so completely lovely. AND THE GIF!!! I can’t stop looking at it.
