Hi Leigh! I was wondering if the Shu Han were Chinese? Because that would be awesome.

They’re not Chinese, but Shu Han was definitely influenced by China and Mongolia in the same way that Fjerda was inspired by Scandinavia, and Kerch was influenced by the Netherlands and Germany.

Botkin Yul Erdene (the Shu combat instructor) is named after a Mongolian friend who helped out with early translation work :)

Thank you for writing such a wonderful book, me (and my husband) loved Shadow and Bone. I was wanting to ask when you write do you sometimes get ahead of yourself? When I sit down to write, I might be writing the first chapter, or the Epilogue, and sometim

Hey Grace!

So glad you and your hub enjoyed Shadow and Bone.

Yes, I get ahead of myself and I don’t think it’s something to worry about? I tend to think the worst thing you could do would be to lose momentum for the sake of sticking to a plan.

So, I do outline, but I don’t write linearly. If I don’t know what happens next, I just make a note of the problem or the point of the scene and I move on. This means I often come back to the draft to find notes like JOURNEY or IMPORTANT INFORMATION or SOMETHING AWESOME HAPPENS HERE, but it also means fewer days of beating my head against the wall, so y’know, tradeoffs ;)

Good luck with your work and thanks again for the kind words

I looked at Fedyor. “If you really believe that saving a life is an honor, then why not become a Healer instead of a Heartrender?”

Fedyor considered the passing scenery. “Of all the Grisha, Corporalki have the hardest road. We hold the highest rank, but we require the most training and study. At the end of it all, I felt I could save more lives as a Heartrender.”

“As a killer?” I asked in surprise.

“As a solider,” Fedyor corrected. He shrugged. “To kill or to cure?” he said with a sad smile. “We all have our own gifts.”

She EMBROIDERED THIS HERSELF. What is going on with all of the talent?? I need to make Kayte some kind of Fabrikator badge. This is just too amazing.

A small trunk lay open by her hand, its contents spread out on the tabletop: squat glass jars of what looked like berries, leaves, and colored powders.

Genya- my favorite ‘tyrannical redhead’. Who doesn’t want a Tailor?

Done.

I just sent Ruin and Rising, book 3 of the Grisha Trilogy, to my editor.

I am waaaay emotional.

Part of this is exhaustion and caffeine and the crazy state of being that I seem to require to finish a book.

Part of it is saying goodbye to these characters.

And part of it is the support I got from so many of you while writing this.

I’m going to try find ways over the next few months (through teasers or giveaways or whatever I can come up with) to say THANK YOU. (I want to shout everyone out by name but I’m afraid of forgetting someone so I’m going to leave that for when I’m a bit more coherent.)

Right now, I just want to say how grateful I am for every tweet and mix and ask and image set and edit and piece of fanart and just EVERYTHING. It made such a difference. It really kept me going when I just wanted to curl up in a ball and go buhbuhbuh.

I love you guys. I truly do. And I can’t believe I have to wait almost a year and a half to share this book with you.

Who’s up for a dance break? xoxoxoxoxoxo
