There are two ways I listen to music when I write:

1. White noise i.e. music without words or where the words just kind of fade into the background: The XX (entire chapters of Ruin and Rising were written with “intro” on repeat), Four Tet, Bass Nectar, Ratatat.

2. Emotional prompts - For Shadow and Bone, Placebo’s cover of “Running Up That Hill” was pretty much the Darkling’s theme music.  “Winter Song” was Alina’s song for her time at the Little Palace.

(And oh my word, there are certain songs I’ll never be able to hear again without thinking of scenes in Ruin and Rising.)
