Excerpts, articles, events, etc.

There's a new excerpt from the Porcelain Dog sequel, Turnbull House up at Jessfaraday.com . The book is contracted, but a release date hasn't been set yet.

This installment is more character driven than Porcelain Dog, and the plot is a little more straightforward. Still plenty of twists and turns, and Ira will have to figure out how to (1) save an orphanage (2) keep his own head above water when his employer evaporates and (3) navigate his own turbulent personal life. And wow, but it does get personal.

I've got an article up at Savvy Authors about writing history out of the box.

The Elm Books Anthology is out. Yay!

And The Left Hand of Justice is available now for preorder! It will be out in the middle of March, and holy cow, I can hardly wait!

And now, back to what I'm coming to think of as "that Passover vampire story". As my dog says, this ball isn't going to throw itself =)

Double Release Day!

The Audiobook of Porcelain Dog is now available at AUDIBLE.COM. This is pretty exciting, not just because it's available in a new format, but also because it will be interesting to see how they've "cast" my characters. I've been using AUDIBLE for a while now, and it's a great service. So why not give it a try and start with my book? =)

Also, ELM BOOKS has now launched, and COLD NIGHT is now available! Eight terrific stories by eight talented author, each offering their own take on the idea of a "winter mystery." Check it out!

Have a blog? Want a free book?

There are review copies of the anthology I'm editing available, for anyone who wished to read and review. Limited time only. Details at the publisher's website.

The anthology is a sampler of different kinds of mystery short stories. There's a cozy, a couple of supernaturals, and all kinds of crime. It's awesome.

Mount TBR

Currently reading The Gift of Stones by Jim Crace, as background for the Caveman Murder Mystery I've been wanting to write for a few years now. It's a short, quick read, but the language is exquisite, and the imagery quite vivid. I wouldn't have thought to make the POV character in a pre-Bronze age setting so bone-shakingly articulate, but it works. Highly recommended.

Also delving into the backlist of my ongoing Litcrush Amir Aczel. ::SIGH::

And on a lighter note, have been going on a bit of a Josh Lanyon bender. Was thrilled to see a new Holmes & Moriarity book in the offing, though am sad that there are no new Adrien English books. Will just have to read the ones I have over. And over. =D

Whee!

Looks like Left Hand now has placeholder entries on Goodreads, Amazon, and BN.com. The release date listed is March 19, and there are PRE-ORDER LINKS, BABY!

Now I'm sure somewhere it's written that I have to state that these things are subject to change. But I'm not making official announcements--I'm just saying Wow! LHOJ is one step closer to being a real book!

It was like pulling teeth to write it, but in the end, I'm proud of the result, and I hope readers will like it, too.

The more you do...

...the more there is to do.

This summer has been surprisingly productive. I finished The Left Hand of Justice and sent it off to the publisher. I wrote almost 32K words on Turnbull House, the second Ira Adler book. How this is happening, I'm not quite sure. I have an excellent outline, true, but the book has been writing itself unusually quickly and painlessly--even considering that I have most of the cultural and historical research done. It's almost like Adler is sitting at my shoulder dictating it to me.

I've been working with a few authors to hone their stories for the mystery anthology I'm putting together. And I started writing two other books: one is another Victorian with supernatural elements. Another is an Indiana Jones-style adventure set in the Americas during WWII, with a female Jones-like protagonist.

People ask where writers get their ideas--well, at least in my case, they jump out of dark alleys, knock me over the head, and go through my pockets for spare minutes. If I gave them all the attention they deserved the minute they demanded it, I'd never finish anything. As a result, I have a ridiculous number of outlines in my "to-do" folder.

Other than this, have been trying to stay out of the hellish heat. I wasn't made for desert conditions! Perhaps one day I'll be able to move somewhere with green and rain. Until then, I'll be remembering my two weeks in a cloud forest and wishing I was there.

Out and About

I'm currently in the wilds of Costa Rica. When I get back in a week or so, I'll post pics at my website, but for now, let me just say that if you're looking for a Vacation Adventure, this might be a very good choice--depending on the kind of vacation you're looking for.

Me, I'm all about the mud-under-the-fingernails-physical-challenge-adventure vacation, and this is what we're doing. Ziplining over cloud forests, trudging through the viper-laden, jaguar-stalked national forest, and pulling over to the side of the dirt roads to take pictures of the monkeys swinging from tree to tree. I'm wearing the first set of dry shoes and socks in 3 days and loving it.

People are awesomely friendly, especially if you make an effort to speak Spanish, however badly (although many people speak English). I'm pleased to find that my miserable schoolgirl Spanish is actually adequate to most tasks.

More later--for now, I'm going to get myself another cup of this excellent coffee.

Cover Design!

One of my favorite tasks landed in my inbox today: picking a cover. BSB's immensely talented cover artist created seven stunning designs, and it was SO HARD to pick a favorite! My eye was initially drawn to a different design than this one, but in the end, I chose this one because of the eye-catching mechanical lady--an intriguing human element--as well as to maintain a certain continuity in color and design of my covers. You can see a larger version at my website, or you can look at it here.

Isn't it gorgeous?
