Just Derek: My Gatway Comic Book:

It’s not that I didn’t read comics before Kelly Sue DeConnick’s Captain Marvel. I did. But I never once considered going into the comic book store and making a pull list/subscribing/preordering/etc. I just read stuff online, read trade paperbacks, checked stuff…

Kingdom Come #1!

Do you have any plans of going to Philly Comic Con? If so, a little part of me might die out of happiness.

I’m sorry, not this year. A poster suggested a good idea, that I keep a little page or sidebar with the cons I am going to so I’m not sending these kinds of notes out all the time to a billion people who are not going to each requested con…I think I may try that. Wish me luck!

You don't find it extremely dishonest of yourself to not mention race and gender bias in your "breaking into comics" piece? Especially considering you made noise via WIR?

“Extremely dishonest?”

No, I don’t, not even remotely.

First, it was never meant to include all possible obstacles or hurdles to every possible aspiring creator. That would be impossible. It was mostly based on MY experience and things I personally had witnessed.

If someone reads that piece and thinks I was sugar-coating the industry, I have very little I can say to that, except that I don’t think they read it very clearly.

Next, I have NO authority to speak about how race affects someone breaking into the industry. There are hundreds of POC creators and staffers who could discuss that better than I could, and many have done just that.

Third, again, I am kind of shaking my head at the idea that THAT article, of all articles, is trying to cover up or defend unfair industry practices. One does not have to look very far to see that I talk about disadvantages and expectations placed on women in comics REGULARLY and have for over a decade. To the point where many, many of my critics use it as a cudgel to beat me over the head.

The article is about practical things one can prepare oneself to accomplish when thinking of working in this industry. I have no doubt that race, gender, sexuality, and other issues would likely up the difficulty level. I wrote that article to help the people who have a sincere drive to get into a difficult industry. It was never meant to include all possible difficulties. I write about those other issues routinely, and have zero problem pointing out where I think the industry is failing in those areas.

Lookit! I had the thrill of going to Gail Simon’s signing at ACME comics in Greensboros NC today, meeting her for the second time. And her hilarious husband, Scott, who hung out in the shop with fans while Gail signed everything put in front of her. He talk about his wife’s work and social media cosplayers and all kinds of fun stuff.

Also, I got to meet thatdjspider, who truly is Big Barda, she’s soooooooo tall! And wow, her cosplay is just as impressive in person as it looks in pictures.

ACME is a very cool shop with a very awesome selection of figures I would kill to buy, agh $200+ Archangel, we will be together one day.

It was such a pleasure to meet you and your friends, Caroline, thank you for the kind, kind words, wow!  Say hi to DJ and Alex and Spider for me, would you?

And wow, North Carolina decided to make my hair go viral…yikes, it’s PUFFY here!

Edited because BUSTED: I got Caroline’s name wrong in this post and her sweet pal corrected me, THANK YOU and SORRY, CAROLINE!

Ms. Simone, I am hoping to see you at the comic con in Portland. I've never been to a con before, so I have an etiquette question: is it ok to ask for two autographs? I'm hoping to get one for myself and one for my niece. I don't want to be rude!

It’s not rude at all, that’s what I am there for!

i am happy to sign as many books or items as you Kline, and I don’t charge for signing. If you bring a hundred books, I will happily sign them.

see you there!

Hey Gail! With your new book coming out, are we going to be seeing any lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender characters as part of the main cast of it? DC still has a serious absence of lesbian, gay and bisexual heroes in its universe (And a complete abse

Yep.  ;)

Edited: I shouldn’t be so glib…but yes, yes.

People asking in the comments, I promise, just get the book. I can’t give any spoilers right now but…

…get the book. :)
