Quick question: Did you ever put any of your own food recipes in the comic books you've done? I mean, since we're talking about food & all. ^___^
I absolutely have, especially in Welcome to Tranquility.
I used to use food all the time in comics, I think it’s another way to touch the physical senses…comics, physically, are a flat, static medium. So I’m always trying to hit the sense memory of the reader to jog sensations of sound, smell, movement, touch, and taste.
I also think what the characters eat is intensely personal, it says so much about them.
In Tranquility, there are some recipes, including Pink Bunny making my meat loaf, it’s an interesting experiment to me. And several readers have actually made the recipe and sent photos. Fun!
Dear Gail. I really love the Batgirl series you're doing but I have a question. I've loved Batman, growing up with the animated series by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini. I've loved a lot of the Batman mythos and grown to love it as I've learned more. But is it w
The bat-verse in general IS in a pretty dark place right now, but I do believe some lighter stories are coming.
I understand not wanting to read a book whose content does not appeal, but I think Scott and Greg are doing a classic run that’s going to be talked about for ages. I really do.

Remember yesterday how I said I was...

Remember yesterday how I said I was giving Batgirl away to someone? That someone was Gail Simone, the writer of Batgirl. And I did so yesterday. In person.
Permit me to back up a bit. I’ve been a huge fan of Gail Simone since back in college when I was writing a paper focusing on gender/behavior in comics for my language/gender class and I stumbled upon “Women in Refrigerators”. I’m also a HUGE fan of her work on Batgirl since the New 52 relaunch. I’ve always admired how she pioneered the female presence in the comic book world in various ways. Needless to say, she’s a bit of a personal hero of mine.
When I found out she was coming Greensboro, I flipped. Once it was decided that my boyfriend Daniel and I were definitely going, I realized that I had to make/give her a tiny Batgirl doll. It may sound strange but I wanted to show my appreciation for her and just give her something as a thank you for being such an awesome person/role model. (To make sure she was cool with getting a gift, I asked her a question anonymously on tumblr.) The Batgirl you see above was made in 3 days which is pretty quick for me given that I could only work on her at night when I was home from work.
Cut to yesterday. I went to Acme Comics in my hometown Greensboro where Gail Simone was doing the signing. The staff at Acme Comics was incredibly lovely and helpful. Definitely one of the best comic book stores I’ve ever been to.
Meeting Gail was amazing for both Daniel and I. She and her husband recognized me from twitter and she hugged me. She signed some stuff for us, I (very nervously) gave her the doll. It was great! We even got to hang with her and her husband for a bit later in the day. They both couldn’t have been kinder or sweeter to us. We still can’t believe it happened.
When Gail sent me this tweet later that day, I choked up big time. Nothing validates a person like having one of their personal heroes appreciate something you made. If I’m ever having a bad day, I’m going to look at the pictures from this. The whole experience was mind-blowing, magical and fantastic. Thank you so much Gail and Scott, you both are hilarious and awesome. Please come back and visit us again soon!
(If you happened to take any pictures yesterday at the event of my crocheted Batgirl or me with the crocheted Batgirl, please feel free to use them! All I ask is that you credit me for the crocheted Batgirl!)
Kelly, it was a JOY to meet you and Daniel, and I absolutely LOVE the little crocheted Batgirl. I had it on my nightstand last night on patrol while I was sleeping.
Thank you SO MUCH!

WOW!
AND!
I forgot, but a Scandal cosplayer brought a pair of Scandal-style polka dot ladies’ boxers for me to sign. HA!
And yes, I signed ‘em!
At My Signing Yesterday...
…in Greensboro, North Carolina, I actually cried three times.
1) A expectant couple asked me to sign a Batgirl for their daughter, who had not yet been born.
2) Two lovely, smiling sisters came in, they had driven a long distance, and one told me that after being diagnosed with a chronic illness, she had begun retreating from everyone and isolating herself from the world, but that reading Batgirl ‘snapped her out of it,’ and that now she is back to interacting with the world.
3) A lovely mom came, waited in line with a big stack of books for me to sign…her daughter is a huge reader of mine, a beautiful, talented young girl of sixteen who could not make it to the event, so her mom came FOR her. The girl had been through a very rough year and had survived a very serious car accident just a couple months ago. I loved that her mother came to get her books signed for her—I talked to the girl by phone and it was a very moving moment.
Additionally, this was just a big smiley moment, but a wonderful young lady came through the line and said that she had been struggling with her identity, but the moment she read stories with Scandal Savage, she realized that she was gay, and came to terms with it, so Secret Six, of all books, helped her come out to herself and her loved ones. Wow.
Other stuff that was great, there were awesome Batgirl and Big Barda cosplayers, lots of young women who are aspiring to make comics, and one of my favorite things….
…this guy, a manly dude named Caleb came up and said, “I am a stereotypical guy. I like sports, beards, and meat.
And I read Batgirl and love it.”
That made me smile. :)
What a signing! The event didn’t start until 11:00, but people waited in the cold since 6:45. I felt very worried for them! I stayed an extra hour or so to make sure everyone got everything signed that they wanted.
Wonderful store, ACME COMICS, in Greensboro, NC. I signed a bunch of books for the shelves if you want one and couldn’t make it.
Great staff, lovely hosts. I wish they were closer so I could come back.
Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who came to the signing, it meant a LOT to me to get to meet you all!
