Gail Simone is doing her Twitter thing and said she’s working on another book with a redhead and everyone is going OMGPLEASEBLACKWIDOW and NO I DO NOT WANT GAIL ON BLACK WIDOW

Not if it means Edmonson has to finish. He’s doing a killer job.

Jeez, it’s not Black Widow.

oh god i didn’t think you would ever see this and now i feel bad

Don’t worry, I thought it was funny.

But Gail would be awesome on Black Widow!

You are a doll, Tamora, but honest to God, I thought Marjorie M. Liu did such an amazing job, she would be hard to follow at all, let alone top. I have not read the new series, but I have heard it is exceptional.

I generally like to go where characters could use a boost, not so much where they are already being handled beautifully.

So THIS Happened

Yesterday was exhausting. I’ve been up working on new projects while trying to be fresh for meeting readers at the con, and even getting back and forth in London is tiring and time-consuming.

The con was great, but hot and pretty loud—I am across from the open lecture room and booming music and announcements played all day, making it hard to hear.

In the evening, they were having an awards ceremony, the first ever True Believer Comics Awards, which used to be called the Eagle Awards, a very prestigious UK award program, something like the Eisners in the US. It’s now approved by Stan Lee, so he was at the event.

We were asked to be there at 7:30, and I was nominated for the first ever “Roll Of Honour” award for people whose body of work had made an impact in the industry.  My feelings on awards are mixed at best, but I do like the ones that are voted on by readers best.

Since I was up against people like Walt Simonson and Moebius, I knew I wasn’t going to win and didn’t give it much thought.

They asked us to be at the event at 7:30. It was hosted by actor Anthony Head, who was charming and funny. The line for the hall was HUGE.

We had a brief moment to go grab a bite, the food took forever and we literally only could have two bites before we had to leave.

They brought Stan up right at the start, and presented the award I was up for first. We knew I wasn’t going to win, but it was fun, as always, to see Stan talk.

He unexpectedly went right into the announcement.

So it turns out I am the first ever recipient of the first ever True Believer Award, as given to me by Stan Goddamn Lee himself.

I have had a lot of wonderful, surprising moments in this career. But I never expected to have Stan Lee hand me an award.

Ten years ago, I was a hairdresser who dreamed of being a writer, but was certain that dream would never come true.

Everything good that has happened was because of the support of readers.

Thank you forever.

And dreams are GOOD things, don’t ever doubt it.

Is there bad blood with you and dc now? Will you be checking out the new Batgirl?

I don’t generally follow a book after I leave, not because it’s bad or because of bitterness, but it’s always an adjustment when you are no longer writing the character’s voice.

I think it’s this way for most of us at the big two, we wish the new folks only good things and want the best for the characters, but there is a definite separation period.

Wait Gail you accept gift art? would you mind if I did a piece for you? call it payment for all the wonderful stories and characters Ive gotten to enjoy. Any Character preferences?

I absolutely do, I love to see art produced by readers, but I can really only accept it online or at signings.  I have quite a collection of beautiful pieces by very talented readers…this con alone I’ve been given a large number of pieces. A girl called Christine brought me a  Batman wearing a thong! ;)

As for which characters, I am happy with whoever the artist chooses, but certainly it’s not necessary, I am extremely happy just to get to meet the readers at all.

Hey Gail! So I've never read Red Sonja not do I know anything about her character and I just picked up a copy of your run the other day and I gotta say I love it! I'm totally going to get more copies and I'm enjoying every page I turn!

Thank you so much!

I honestly did not expect to love writing Red Sonja as much as I do. I thought it would be a fun diversion, an interesting experiment.

But Sonja had other ideas and now I love writing her as much as my all-time favorites, people like Black Canary and Barbara Gordon and Scandal and Ryan Choi. She is one of the two or three favorites that make me happy every time.

You never know!

Okay, Time To Admit It

I was always a Helena Bertinelli girl. I missed the Helena Wayne stuff, not sure if it was before my time or what, but when I started loving Huntress, it was Helena B.

But having read some of the new Helena Wayne stuff, and having been lucky enough to get to write her a little bit, I love Helena W. now, too, and I have to admit, I was not sure that would happen because I love B. so much.

So I have to face it.

Huntress just fucking rocks, either version.

I want to start reading Red Sonja, where should I start/where can I get it?

I am happy to hear it!

The new run is not that old…you can start with issue one, or issue seven. It’s only up to TEN so far! It’s available in single issues at comic stores, a trade paperback of 1-6, or digitally on COMIXOLOGY!

Is Aneva and Sonja going to get it on? ;)

You’d be surprised how often I get asked this question…
