Awhile ago you made a post about wanting to do an arc where alysia takes over the mantle. Was this something that you proposed but it got shot down or were there other factors that kept it from happening? I would've cried with joy...
This was something I pitched repeatedly.
I wanted Barbara to be injured, and while recovering, Alysia would be Batgirl, wearing her own version of the costume, and carrying an actual baseball bat for protection, and some friends as her back-up.
It was more complicated than that, I promise. :)
The reason I was told we couldn’t do it was, and I kinda understand why they thought it, that Barbara had only had the cowl back herself for a short period of time. It was felt that she would need to more fully establish herself before someone else took up the mantle.
I am sad it didn’t happen.
Also, the Movement partially came from this…after the idea was nixed for the final time, I took the central idea and created the Movement, but at that point, Alysia was too popular to be moved to another book.

"When I do charity events dressed as Batgirl, all the children of color are absolutely overjoyed...."
The white children are hesitant and some attempt to quiz me or insist that I’m not ‘right’ or ‘real’. They are repeating what they have been told and what they have seen all their lives. I explain that Batman believes that anyone can be a hero if they are a good person and work hard, no matter what they look like. So of course Batgirl and Robin can be Black or Chinese or Spanish or anything, because that doesn’t change who they are.
The kids accept this and by the end of the event we’re all holding hands and talking about video games. I think representation is more important than ‘accuracy’ and I won’t be involved with an organization that doesn’t agree with that.”

Jay Justice, on whether costumers who dress for charity events should only portray characters ‘accurately’ or not, with implications that ‘accuracy’ means that a non white person should limit themselves to canonical characters of color. (via msjayjustice)
Jay Justice is more Batgirl than anyone I know.
Oh
What am I doing?
Oh, nothing. Just writing an old friend character that I LOVE TO PIECES AND HAVEN’T GOTTEN TO WRITE FOR AGES.

Seriously, I’m still so amazed to be fortunate enough to know this woman, to count her among my dearest…
NO ONE WARNED ME I WOULD BE CRYING THIS MORNING.
Shouldn’t a message like this come with a parental advisory: CAUTION—TEARS WILL FLOW?
Love you so much, you will always be Vengeance Moth to me!
HA! Look what Lara Margarida drew me for my birthday!

Confessions of a Comic Shopaholic: Happy Birthday Gail Simone!
confessionsofacomicshopaholic:
Today, July 29th, is comic book writer extraordinaire Gail Simone’s birthday! I know I’ve done a post about her already but I’d like to do another one to pay tribute to my favorite comic book writer.
Everyone knows Gail is best known for Birds of Prey where she really nailed each and every…
I know its past her birthday but I liked the examples of what they liked about her work. One of my favourite comic book writers and I got to meet her.
Sorry to reblog this, but dang, what a kind post.
THANK YOU!
It's Gail SImone's birthday!
So go wish the FABULOUS, KIND, SUPER-WISE, and MEGA-AMAZING gailsimone the very happiest of birthdays! She’s done so much when it comes to representation and good storytelling in comics, from the introduction of characters like Alysia Yeoh in Batgirl, to her amazing work on Birds of Prey to the diverse team-roster in The Movement! Gail has worked wonders when it comes to making sure that EVERYONE has a voice within comics, that no matter your race, where you fall on the gender-spectrum, where you’re from, or who you are, there are these ASTONISHING HEROES just like you! Not only that, but she’s also worked towards making the comic industry itself more reflective of the truly (and fantastically) diverse world we live in, championing more gender-diversity, race-diversity, and just more all-around diversity in creators, editors, retailers, promoters, con-goers, and just EVERYONE who shares this wonderful world of comic-fandom with us!
Aw!!
:)
Thank you for the very kind words! I wish I was as awesome as you make me sound.
It is a happy birthday because of readers like you!
RED SONJA #0 Review
RED SONJA #0 Review @GailSimone @DynamiteComics
Every month, I continue to be amazed that I look forward to a Red Sonja book. Gail Simone has revived this character to one that is incredibly enjoyable all while being foul of mouth and of scent. The insults that Simone puts into Sonja’s mouth are worth the cover price alone.
In this issue, we are told the tale of Malak, Red Sonja’s husband. Oh, you didn’t know she was married? Turns out,…
Thank you for the very kind words!
And you’re right, I freaking love Red Sonja. :)
If anyone out there has been thinking of trying it, this is a fun done-in-one story about Red Sonja’s secret hubby!
