On Sunday Heroes Alliance Georgia had its first event of the year, visiting medically fragile children for an organisation's Valentine's party. I went as Supergirl and had a blast; the kids were a joy to be around and their smiles were infectious. Making them smile is the best feeling in the world.

Oh. My. God…. This. Is. Beautiful…. :')

Next person who badmouths cosplayers gets my boot in their head.

I have seen scenes like these, over and over. Some cosplayer guilds routinely visit children's hospitals and schools.

So much love, it's ridiculous.

APE IN A CAPE: A Discouraging Year So Far...

APE IN A CAPE: A Discouraging Year So Far...:

izandra:

gailsimone:

It seems like the worst year in a while for the causes I believe in, and we're only three months in.

A record number of increasingly hysterical bills are coming before various state congresses that limit women's rights over their own bodies, some actually allowing doctors to lie to their…

I'm positive this is contributing a huge chunk to my returning depression.  Sure, my job insecurity is a large part of it, but reading the news every day and finding stories like the above over and over again is just exhausting for my soul.  I can't believe how fast it seems we are going backwards as a country.  I'm just praying to god we hit the tipping point soon and people start realizing how insane and awful the right wing now is, and fighting back.

I goofily forgot the ongoing war against immigrants of all stripes, another case where their lives have no value to this lot of lawmakers.

What's driving me nuts is, if you take out the women, the lgbtq, and the people of color that these awful people and institutions are attacking…

…who is even LEFT to still call Americans?  Those groups together would add up to a HUGE majority of the people in this country, even with those who belong to more than one group. So it's a minority holding all the power and attacking the MAJORITY of Americans at this point.

Batgirl 7

I had never seen Alitha Martinez's art before, but I liked her section of the issue. According to DC's website, we'll be seeing more of her. She's listed as drawing part of issue 8 and all of issue 10.

She did a really lovely job…her upcoming pages are even better. I really hope she gets a great ongoing books soon.

That is fantastic news!  I'd talked to Carol Burrell (Martinez's editor at Graphic Universe) at SPX and she said that Martinez was contemplating leaving comics, and that made me a sad panda, since I loved her Iron Man "Mask in the Iron Man" work as well as her "My Boyfriend Bites" work.  The fact that she's getting repeat jobs from DC Comics can only encourage her to stay!  Apart from the fact that she's a great artist, there's also a real dearth of POC working at the Big Two these days, and Martinez is certainly one that deserves a higher profile (just look at that Babs, people!).

I did not actually know she is POC, I haven't met her or spoken with her, she was chosen by my editor, Bobbie Chase.  But she did a fantastic job helping while Ardian had an unavoidable delay, and I can't WAIT to see what she does with an issue of her own. Exciting. I would work with her ANY TIME.

About Cop Watch

baddominicana:

poemsofthedead:

note-a-bear:

So there are groups that do this, they stay in highly policed areas on shifts and bring cameras and such, and record to make sure police brutality doesn't escalate, and when it happens there's evidence against it.

But that's not the only way it can happen.

Every single person is entitled to watch an arrest go down as long as they are not obstructing or interfering. That means, if you see cops bumrush someone, even if that person is waving a gun, you are allowed, even legally permitted and encouraged to watch the events occur.

This is important white folks, because the cops work inyourservice. Oh sure, they're supposedly in the service of "the common good" but we all know that means protecting white people.

-

And now a story, when I was in high school, and my mom was working under a horrific principal, she was late to work one day because there was something going on in our neighborhood. Cops were gathered near our pharmacy and a guy was on the roof (it's a little over one story, so he wasn't a jumper or anything) and she stayed as long as she could and watched the scenario go down for a while. Not because she's trifling. not because she's nosy. But because she saw a POC and cops gathered and said to herself "I want to make sure this goes by the book."

And that's all it takes to be a cop watcher.

You acknowledge that you, as a white person, are in a relative position of safety and you watch. You bear witness, because your voice, unfortunately, carries more weight than ours in the criminal justice system.

Justice is not blind, nor should you be.

If there are cops, and they outnumber an individual, shit, even if it's 1:1, it is your responsibility to keep an eye on the scenario and take down whatever information you can. And if it looks like something shady is going on, you areobligatedto call in to your local precinct and say "Listen, I saw X happen on Y, and it looked questionable." And if you get a negative response, well, y'know what? You find out if there's a civilian oversight committee. In NYC we have one, but they're underfunded and continually being legislated against (currently there's a statute of 18 months from the time of the event within which you have to file charges).

-

-

If the prospect of keeping vigilant about cops scares you, imagine being a POC, and knowing that no matter what you do, you could be railroaded by a system that wants to not only disenfranchise you, but has no intentions of treating you as a human being.

Take your fears and shove 'em down, because they'll never be anything when compared to what we face on a daily basis.

AND YOU KNOW WHAT IS SO FUNNY??? THIS POST HAS SEVEN FUCKING NOTES. BECAUSE GIVING WHITE PEOPLE SOME INFORMATION AND TOOLS THAT THEY CAN ACTUALLY USE TO TAKE ACTION AS ALLIES IS NOT WORTH THEM LIKING OR REBLOGGING AND SHARING WITH EACH OTHER. IT'S NOT LIKE THEY ARE ACTUALLY GOING TO DO ANYTHING WITH IT! RIGHT? RIGHT? IT'S "FUNNY" CUZ IT'S JUST BLACK AND BROWN LIVES ON THE LINE ANYWAY.

word. we ALL have white followers. but they prefer to reblog jokes or pretty pictures or "universal" (read: non-racial shit) things. let it be a good, useful critique on them and their structures and their fucking bullshit. let it be a word of advice so they can stop being oppressive dicks and *crickets*

we all see you.

Please boost this signal.

Exposure is the best tool to prompt accountability.

wilwheaton:

"Nearly three weeks after an unarmed teenager was killed in a small city north of Orlando, stirring an outcry, a few indisputable facts remain: the teenager, who was black, was carrying nothing but a bag of Skittles, some money and a can of iced tea when he was shot. The neighborhood crime watch volunteer who got out of his car and shot him is white and Hispanic. He has not been arrested and is claiming self-defense. Beyond that, however, little is clear about the Feb. 26 shooting death of Trayvon Martin, 17. As criticism of the police investigation mounts, so too do the calls for swift action in a case with heavy racial overtones. Protests grow larger each week, and lawyers for the family are now asking the Department of Justice to intervene. The case also brings into sharp focus Florida's self-defense laws, which give people who feel threatened greater latitude in defending themselves than most states. The police in of Sanford, where the shooting took place, are not revealing details of the investigation. Late Friday night, after weeks of pressure, the police played the 911 calls in the case for the family and gave copies to the news media. On the recordings, one shot, an apparent warning or miss, is heard, followed by a voice begging or pleading, and a cry. A second shot is then heard, and the pleading stops. "It is so clear that this was a 17-year-old boy pleading for his life, and someone shot him in cold blood," said Natalie Jackson, one of the Martin family lawyers."

The New York Times, "Justice Department Investigation Is Sought In Florida Teenager's Shooting Death."

Jesus fucking Christ.

(via inothernews)

This story gets more sickening and nauseating with each new bit of news. Hearing the audio recording is shattering.

If there is no justice for this innocent young man and his family, the message will be that a black kid's life has no value whatsoever.

I really didn't like this picture.

Truthfully, it's a double page spread and looks a little weird, only showing half of it. It's quite a bit more integrated in full visual context, at least I think so.
