Marvel Relaunches THE DEFENDERS with Bendis and the Netflix Heroes

Hello comic book fangirls and fanboys, to your mid-week edition of Comics Relief! It’s a Marvel Comics heavy column today, as the publisher has three big announcements this week regarding new series launches. Read on for all the details.

Marvel Announces the Return of The Defenders

We knew it was only a matter of time before The Defenders got their own comic book title from Marvel once again. Now it’s official: writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist David Marquez are re-launching the classic Marvel team, with the exact same line-up of members as the upcoming Netflix series: Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones and Daredevil. Corporate synergy at its finest folks.

In a statement, Bendis said “I wanted do a sprawling, Godfather-like epic at the street level of the Marvel Universe, Really putting our hooks down and creating a modern, elaborate organized crime story that is different than what has gone before, but builds on everything that has happened to these characters, as individuals or as a team, and putting them in the hardest battle for the street that anyone can imagine.”

“You will get Jessica Jones looking out her window, street-level, and my return to Daredevil, which will be different than what I and Alex did before,” Bendis continued. “And Luke and Danny—characters that I have a strong affinity for. I spent most of the oughts being mocked for the love of Luke Cage. Now that Luke Cage is a household name, I just sit back in my chair and laugh and laugh.” Defenders #1 is scheduled to debut in June, after a preview to be released on Free Comic Book Day in May. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Guardians of the Galaxy Gets All-New Creative Team

With Brian Bendis starting a new Defenders title, he had to leave an old title behind, which means he will no longer be writing Guardians of the Galaxy for Marvel. So naturally, Marvel is relaunching the title as All-New Guardians of the Galaxy with writer Gerry Duggan and artist Aaron Kuder. The new book will be released twice a month, with guest artists filling-in on smaller stories that focus on the individual team members, in-between arcs drawn by Kuder.

Marvel’s official description of the new series is as follows: “Star-Lord. Gamora. Drax. Rocket Raccoon. Groot. Reunited and it feels so good! After an extended stay on this mudball we call Earth, the Guardians of the Galaxy return to the stars! Yet, as this band of misfits reunites, they’ll find they’ve undergone some…changes. Drax the Destroyer has sworn off violence. Groot isn’t regenerating as he once was. This team better get it together, because it won’t be long before they find themselves in a war between the Elders of the Universe. One that will force them to pull off the biggest heist they’ve ever attempted – literally!”

Followers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe might have heard that The Elders of the Universe are supposed to figure into the Guardians movie sequel, so much like Defenders, this is corporate synergy at work once more. The first issue is set launch in May.

Planet of the Apes/Green Lantern Intros New Power Ring

When writer Geoff Johns reinvented the Green Lantern mythology several years back, he added many new colors of power rings, and the concept of the emotional spectrum which fuels them. Now, for the BOOM! Studios/DC Comics crossover Planet of the Apes/Green Lantern, writers Robbie Thompson and Justin Jordan will introduce the Universal Power Ring, a weapon created by the Guardians that harnesses the power of the whole emotional spectrum. (which sounds a bit like the Phantom Ring in the current DC Rebirth Green Lanterns series).

Series editor Dafna Pleban said in a statement “creating a ring that amplified all the conflicting emotions Cornelius has for his home—his hope, fear and everything else—felt both narratively engaging and just visually cool, something that Robbie, Justin, and Barnaby captured really well in this design. How it got to the Planet of the Apes, and why? We can’t wait for you to find out.” You can see the design for the new ring above. The first issue of Planet of the Apes/Green Lantern hits on [Comic Book]

Graphic Novel Sales Only Ones to Increase Up in 2016

Don’t let anyone tell you that the art of the comic book is dying. In fact, the reverse is true—the graphic storytelling format is thriving and finding new fans now more than ever. Just this past year, according to Publisher’s Weekly report on bookstore sales, graphic novel sales were up 12%, the only category to show a rise. This was still down from 2015, when graphic novels saw a rise of 22% in bookstores. Among the best selling graphic novels  will likely be stalwarts like The Killing Joke. All other categories saw things remain flat, or saw an actual decrease in sales, except graphic novels. So, say it with me: Go Comics! [Comics Beat]

Scarlet Spider Returns From the ’90s

Marvel recently revealed that the long thought to be dead Spider-Man clone Ben Reilly has come back as the villainous Jackal, the baddie behind the recent Clone Conspiracy event. Now, for the first time in twenty years, Marvel is bringing Ben Reilly back in his own ongoing series called Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider.

Although this might sound like a bad idea, the creative team couldn’t be better: writer Peter David and former Ultimate Spider-Man artist Mark Bagley will be in charge. With this new series comes a newly redesigned costume for Ben Reilly that evokes his old look. You can see a preview of the issue #1 cover above, and for more on the new Scarlet Spider book, click on our full story: [Nerdist]

Image Comics Pays Homage to 25 Years of Covers

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Image Comics, and to celebrate, several Image titles over the course of 2017 will be honoring the publisher’s past with a series of special covers. This cover series is called “Homage Covers: Celebrating Past, Present, Future,” and the first one to be released is a variant cover by Eric Canete and Jordan Boyd for Deadly Class #26, which pays tribute to Cyberforce #1 by Marc Silvestri. Many more Image homage covers will be coming throughout the year. In the meantime, you can see the Deadly Class and original Cyberforce covers in our gallery below. [Newsarama]

What Is A24’s Secret Sci-Fi Movie?

Well, here we are. A movie trailer that gives you no information about the movie, including title or release date. Welcome to our Big Internet Puzzle of the Day!

A24, the studio behind Ex Machina, Amy, Room, The Witch, The Lobster, and Moonlight, just dropped this trailer for an upcoming science fiction film (we’re guessing?) and it is as bizarre as it is… unanswery? Is unanswery a word? I mean, it fits.

In the video, we get some images of otherworldly technology and groups of people seemingly in the middle of a lot of complicated emotions. And that’s it. That’s what we’re getting here. After heading down the internet rabbit hole, there are no announcements of pre-existing properties acquired by A24 that might fit with this, so your guess is as good as ours when it comes to where this is all headed.

But with A24’s track record of fantastic movies, including 20th Century Women and Moonlight that are in theaters now, we’re prepared to get excited for this. I mean, they gave us Ex Machina. They know their sci-fi.

Even A24 is playing more coy than you might imagine, posting a tweet that says “In our near future” which doubles as a possible setting for the film, but also for the distributor letting us know what they’ll be releasing soon. It’s maddening, I tell you!

In our near future. pic.twitter.com/pYEDrGH4iH

So what do you guys think? Is this trailer something to get excited for? Do you have any clues as where this is going that we may have missed? Or are you at the point where a trailer that doesn’t tell you the name of the movie just feels like you’re wasting your time? Sound off in the comments to let us know!

NANCY DREW and THE HARDY BOYS Get 21st Century Comic Series

They are usually the gateway drug for young people into a life of consuming mystery and detective fiction, and have been around now for decades, becoming an ever-present part of American pop culture. Nope, I’m not talking about Scooby-Doo and the Mystery, Inc. gang, I’m referring to teenage pulp novel detectives Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys.

Both sets of characters started to appear in young adult novels in the late 1920’s, have since gone on to appear in movies and TV shows galore, and just the names “Nancy Drew” and “Hardy Boys” have become shorthand for saying “teenage detective.” Now the characters, which were created and owned by the same publishing house, are teaming up in the world of comics, thanks to Dynamite Entertainment.

Thanks to the folks at The A.V. Club, we’ve learned that the new Dynamite Comics series Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys: The Big Lie brings the characters into the 21st century in a big way,  as the Hardy brothers, Frank and Joe, end up being accused of murdering their own detective father. With no one else to turn to, the boys then reach out to “local femme fatale” Nancy Drew, in order to help solve the mystery and clear their names, sending the trio on a mysterious new adventure.

The new Dynamite series is coming from the creative team of writer Anthony Del Col, best known for Kill Shakespeare, and artist Werther Dell’Edera (House Of Mystery, Cobra) along with colorist Stefano Simeone. The new series hits the stands on March 8, and in the meantime, you can check out a preview of of the first several unlettered pages from the first issue, as well as several variant covers for issue #1, down below in our gallery.

Are excited for this latest reboot of these classic pop culture icons? Let us know your thoughts down below in the comments.

“Empirical Analysis” Shows 2016 Was Indeed Anomalous for Celebrity Deaths

Ask most people with access to the internet and social media about 2016 and they’ll probably mention something about it being a year lousy with celebrity deaths. But the feeling of an unprecedented number of celebrities dying off is just that: a feeling. Conjecture. But Jason Crease of Medium stepped up, brought numbers to a word fight, and now claims fairly convincingly that 2016 (at least relative to 2000-2015) was indeed an anomaly in regards to top-echelon celebrity deaths.

Crease’s “empirical analysis,” which can be found in full here, begins with a brief look at the way the BBC conducted their own analysis of the celebrity death toll in 2016 versus previous years. He notes that the BBC analysis does indeed find that celebrity deaths were unusually high in 2016, but also pokes some holes in the BBC’s methods, including the use of pre-written obituaries as the standard for “celebrity.”

Then Crease launches into his own reasoning, which uses Wikipedia as the benchmark for what qualifies as “celebrity,” specifically how long a respective figure’s article is, as well as how many times the article has been revised. Looking at his own numbers reveals exactly how he did his calculations, but considering they yield a list made up almost entirely of celebrities like Michael Jackson, Ronald Reagan, Steve Jobs, Whitney Houston, and Fidel Castro, it seems fair to say his criteria works well.

The top 200 people on Crease’s list of celebrities who died in any given year are dubbed “mega-celebrities” and include many names like those above. The top 1000, are simply “celebrities,” and include names like Dom DeLuise.

Crease tracked the death rates for both groups of celebrities (starting in 2000, due to the establishment of Wikipedia being a constraint) and found that there was a “long-term linear trend,” with celebrity deaths dipping and surging but generally trending upward. In 2016 however, the number clearly jumps away from the trend line.

Crease notes that he predicted “78 P1K [top 1000] deaths in 2016… [but] There were actually 99.” According to Crease this is a “once-in-a-century event.” For the top 200, he says that the trend line predicts 17 deaths, when in fact there were 25. This, he says, was a “once-in-200-years event.” Meaning if it felt like a lot of your favorite celebrities passed on last year, you’re right. The silver lining is that it should be another 200 years before something like this happens again. Which should give us plenty of time to get them all on hologram.

What do you think about this analysis of 2016’s celebrity death toll? Does Crease’s graph convince you that 2016 was especially heinous for celebrities, or do you want to go back a lot further than 2000 for a better sense of the truth? Let us know in the comments below!

Norway Becomes First Country to Turn Off FM Radio Signals

The future is here and it’s even more digital than we expected. Norway just turned off some of its FM radio signals. The music world will keep on living, though, at least if artists can help it. Bonnaroo rolled out a stacked bill with U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Weeknd headlining, Eddie Vedder performed at President Obama’s farewell address, Beyonce interviewed Solange because sisters stick together, and Arcade Fire finished recording their new album which means a massive tour is in the works.

Go analog, baby. As of this week, Norway became the first country to switch off some of its FM radio signals. In its place, they used traditional radio with digital audio broadcasting (DAB, which is really a name). They hope to use DAB and only DAB by the end of 2017. The pros include higher quality audio and a more cost-effective radio signal. They know it will work because, prior to this deletion of FM signals, almost 70% of the country’s population already switched to DAB of their own accord. In honor of how bizarre this is, listen to Motion City Soundtrack’s classic single, “The Future Freaks Me Out,” because, well, just read the song title. [Rolling Stone]

Festival season is in full swing and with that comes yet another big announcement. Bonnaroo revealed its lineup and it’s incredibly top heavy. How could it not be with U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and The Weeknd scheduled to headline? Tickets can be purchased on their website. So block off June 8-11 in your calendar and figure out how to drive to Manchester, Tennessee. It’ll be a beautiful day. [Rolling Stone]

Eddie Vedder w/ Voice Of Chicago performance at POTUS’s Farewell Address .. Periscope Video https://t.co/83kEtienjN

— ❄️ demetrios ❄️ (@demetriosns) January 11, 2017

It’s strange to realize President Obama will no longer be the President come the end of January. Yet at the same time, he’s been in office for eight years and, in that time, given our country plenty. To help send him off, Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder performed before his farewell address this past Tuesday evening. Vedder took the stage there in Chicago around 7:30 PM. He performed covers of Patti Smith, Neil Young, Labi Siffre, and more, all with a 24-person ensemble called Voice of Chicago backing him up. Not too shabby. We wish we could have been there, but for now, this short video clip will have to suffice. [Consequence of Sound]

Sometimes it’s hard to fathom that Beyoncé and Solange, both giants in the music world, are sisters. One continues to pave the way for hip-hop and pop, the other redefines the grace of R&B. Now, in the newest issue of Interview magazine, the two musicians spoke together, rather candidly, about everything. Technically, it’s Beyoncé interviewing Solange about their mother, vocal flexibility, and trends, but even still, there’s some subjects that are “too personal” for her to answer. It’s a riveting read that will warm your heart and inspire you. That’s a hell of a bargain. Read it in full right here. [Rolling Stone]

It seems like just yesterday that Arcade Fire released Reflektor, but the Canadian indie rock group has a new LP on the way. Drummer Jeremy Gara told Red Bull Poland that they finished recording all the tracks for the upcoming full-length and it “should come out this year,” which rules. “[We’re] still mixing and trying to decide which songs will end up on the record, because we’ve recorded more than we need,” said Gara. “I know we’re a popular band, but we always stick to the same rule; we record until we feel that the music is ready.” If we’ve learned anything from them, it’s that their music is well worth the wait. We’re just antsy to learn more. [Consequence of Sound]

That’s it for today, but see you back here on Friday for another Music Dispatch!

Instagram’s TOS Rewritten for Teens Reveals the Powers of the Platform

Instagram, the photo sharing app used by 500 million people as of June 2016, is great as a platform for checking out shelter dogs enjoying puppucinos, exploring the Rick and Morty “Rickstaverse,” or generally getting a small hit of dopamine from seeing the hearts roll in for your latest cosplay selfie. But in order to join in on the Insta-fun, users have to sign a Terms of Service agreement (TOS), which is a lot like Darth Vader’s torso: nobody’s ever really seen the whole thing.

To help people better understand Instagram’s TOS, specifically teens in the U.K., a British lawyer, Jenny Afia — an expert in privacy law — decided to rewrite the terms using simple language. Afia’s TOS, which comes via Quartz, is available in full here on page 10, and reveals aspects of the agreement that many users may not be aware of. Quartz highlighted several areas that may be disconcerting, although one point seems to stand out as especially Orwellian:

“Although you are responsible for the information you put on Instagram, we may keep, use and share your personal information with companies connected with Instagram. This information includes your name, email address, school, where you live, pictures, phone number, your likes and dislikes, where you go, who your friends are, how often you use Instagram, and any other personal information we find such as your birthday or who you are chatting with, including in private messages (DMs).We are not responsible for what other companies might do with this information…” (Instagram’s privacy policy for further clarification.)

In fairness to Instagram, the first point on Afia’s TOS is “You have the right to feel safe using Instagram,” and it seems reasonable to think that a lot of what Instagram is asking for, including the ability to erase your account, or any photos you post at any time for any reason, goes toward censoring especially offensive content.

For comparison, you can check out Instagram’s own Terms of Service here. Note that Instagram does offer relatively simple language under the “Basic Terms” banner.

What do you think about Instagram’s Terms of Service? Do you think anything the company’s asking for is too much, or do you just need that hit of dopamine? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Playmobil Joins Funko With GHOSTBUSTERS, BACK TO THE FUTURE, DOCTOR WHO

Although not quite as ubiquitous a brand these days as Lego, the Playmobil toys were nevertheless a huge part of the lives of many kids who grew up in the past fifty years or so. Although those original figures and sets were themed around cowboys, construction workers, and medieval knights for the most part, we know that today it’s all about the licensing.

Fortunately, that’s were our friends at Funko come in, who announced a partnership with the Playmobil company last year to produce 6″ collectible figures done in the toy’s classic style, and this time based on famous pop culture properties. Now we finally have a first glimpse of some of these figures in their packaging, as well as a release date.

First up are the original 1980s era Ghostbusters, with new figures for our favorite parapsychologist research professors Raymond Stantz and Peter Venkman. (Hopefully Winston and Egon aren’t far behind!) Next up is the original Gene Wilder version of Willy Wonka, along with an Oompa Loompa.

Another classic property is Back to the Future, with both Marty McFly and Doc Brown getting the 6″ treatment (Ed note: nice). The classic versions of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will include Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Shredder, as well as an exclusive black & white Raphael from Entertainment Earth. And finally, Doctor Who fans will be able to collect new 6″ figures of both the Eleventh and Fourth Doctors.

All of these figures will become available sometime this January. You can see preview images of all of these figures down below in our gallery.

Do you have a favorite among these new Playmobil Funko figures? And who would you like to see get their own figures in the future? Let us know down below in the comments.

Scientists on Twitter Crowdsourcing List of Every Farting Animal

Everyone Poops is arguably the most important, most informative children’s book ever written. Going to the bathroom is a weird thing to comprehend for a kid. You put delicious food in your mouth, and then later….YOU DON’T NEED THIS EXPLAINED. But knowing that every other person as well as other animals also go through the same strange process of digestion is a nice thing to know for a youngster trying to understand his or her body. But why stop there? What about the other odorous event that emanates from our backsides?

Does everything fart?

Sure, you know other humans fart, like your Uncle Steve who is not funny, and you know your dog farts (seemingly a lot more when your significant other is around), but what about a butterfly? Does a snake fart? Are you risking a whiff of ocean-tinged sulfur when you open up a soft shell clam? Thankfully the brave scientists of the world are coming together to answer all of our animal flatulence inquiries.

It all started on Twitter with a single, very important question:

@AlongsideWild a family member asked me the other day if snakes fart and i did not know the answer to their question. So do they?

Which got the best response ever.

yes. https://t.co/Y2L00dcDZV

— David Steen, Ph.D. (@AlongsideWild) January 8, 2017

And that’s when Nick Caruso was inspired to start the hashtag #DoesItFart, and from there an idea turned into a spreadsheet that scientists who study specific animals can contribute to. No, seriously, Caruso really made a Google doc where experts are now answering whether or not different animals of all shapes and sizes (and some that aren’t even real) pass gas or not. You can check it out here.

Editable (let me know if it doesn't work) google sheet, for all your #DoesItFart needs
Feel free to share & update!https://t.co/6doRyMXDS2 https://t.co/eQaobC5r8k

— Nick Caruso (@PlethodoNick) January 8, 2017

“For all your #DoesItFart needs.” Science is the best.

Besides yes/no answers (and some maybes that need further research), the list also has some interesting notes to digest. Like how a seal fart smells like lutefisk, and how even though a sea anemone doesn’t fart, it does have awful burps.

And while of course grizzly bears fart, “usually in the woods,” considering the butt of a giraffe stands about the height of where a human head reaches, they pose a far greater risk of giving you stink face. And you definitely don’t want that, since the listed answer for whether a giraffe farts or not falls under the terrifying header of “hell yes.”

Although, even more ominous might be the note on birds, which are listed as being non-farters, but apparently “could if they wanted to.” What in the hell does that even mean? Also, did we just accidentally come up with a great sequel idea for Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds?

Besides looking through the list, you might want to spend some time searching the #DoesItFart hashtag on Twitter, because where else can you get a statistical breakdown like this?

#DoesItFart by the numbers (non-existent taxa excluded) pic.twitter.com/pyMPJgCoyU

— Dr. Jeff Clements (@biolumiJEFFence) January 10, 2017

Looks like you need some backbone to fart. No, we’re not apologizing for that joke. So far we think we’ve managed to hold most of the bad ones in.

Before today it never even occurred to us whether or not a European oyster suffers from bouts of butt stink (it doesn’t), but now that we know the answer the world somehow seems more alive and diverse. Because while everyone poops, not everyone farts, which makes it all the more special when you do.

What animal not on the list do you want to know about? It would stink if you didn’t pass your questions into our comments section below.

This Life-Size Majora’s Mask Is the Best THE LEGEND OF ZELDA Collectible

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is widely regarded as one of the darker games in the Zelda franchise, and for good reason. The absolutely terrifying moon threatens to destroy the planet, after the Skull Kid stole Majora’s Mask and caused that to happen. My cousin once told me that as a kid, his mother wasn’t entirely comfortable with him playing the game, and if we were a parent walking by the TV when the moon makes its infamous expression, we’d probably stop and ask a couple questions as well.

Still, of course we wanted to be Link as children controlling him on the screen, and unlike the Skull Kid, we like to think we’d use its powers for good, not world-destructing evil. That idea probably still interests Zelda fans today, and while we can’t promise it bears magical powers, this replica of the mask that you can buy now at least looks magical.

That’s it above, and if you want to pre-order one for yourself, it’ll cost you a few rupees: We don’t know the conversion rate, but in U.S. dollars, it will run you $384.99. Let’s be clear, though, that this isn’t a toy, but a true high-quality collectible. It stands 25 inches tall, weighs over 17 pounds, and has LED eyes that pierce through  darkness, like this:

majoras-mask-collectible-2

The mask is expected to become available “Q3 2017,” but if you’re down to pre-order now, you can do so right here. Just don’t let the power get to your head, because we’re fine with the moon in the sky as is.

LA Will Be Home to the George Lucas Museum of the Narrative Arts

After trying and failing to find a city to host his Museum of the Narrative Arts, pioneering filmmaker George Lucas has finally found a home for it, and in a statement confirmed today by mayor Eric Garcetti, that home will be Los Angeles. Lucas tried to find a home for his museum in Chicago, but the city ultimately rejected his plan. San Francisco was also very close to being the home for this museum, but ultimately, Los Angeles won out. The new $1 billion dollar museum will be erected near Exposition Park, a hop, skip, and a jump away from Lucas’ alma mater, USC.

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is set to feature pieces from the Star Wars and Indiana Jones creator’s own personal collection, including memorabilia from Star Wars and many other films. The futuristic design for the museum, which itself almost looks like a spaceship for a sci-fi film, comes from Chinese architect Ma Yansong. The 72-year-old Lucas has spent a decade trying to bring about a museum for his art collection, which consists of about 10,000 paintings and illustrations including works by Norman Rockwell, N.C. Wyeth, and R. Crumb, along with Hollywood memorabilia from classic Disney films, as well as movies like The Ten Commandments and, obviously, Lucas’ own movies.

In a statement, the museum’s board of directors said “After extensive due diligence and deliberation, the Board of Directors of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is pleased to announce plans to build the museum in Exposition Park in Los Angeles. We have been humbled by the overwhelmingly positive support we received from both San Francisco and Los Angeles during our selection process. Settling on a location proved to be an extremely difficult decision precisely because of the desirability of both sites and cities. Now we turn our attention to finalizing the details and building what we believe will be one of the most imaginative and inclusive art museums in the world—a global destination that all Angelenos and Californians will be proud to call their own.”

In a statement, LA mayor Eric Garcetti added “art exists to inspire, to move, to educate, and to excite. Thanks to George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, millions of Angelenos and visitors will enjoy an extraordinary collection anchored in storytelling—an art that carries so much meaning in the history and legacy of Los Angeles. LA is gaining a new jewel with the breathtaking Lucas Museum of Narrative Art—and its presence here means that a day at Exposition Park will soon bring unrivaled opportunities to be immersed in stories told on canvas and celluloid, be moved by the richness of African-American history and expression, be awed by the wonders of science and the natural world, take a journey to the world of space exploration, and sit in the stands for a world-class sporting event.”

No word yet on when the museum plans to break ground, or when they plan to open. But with something of this size, it could be a while. You can see preliminary designs for the massive $1 billion dollar project down below in our gallery.

What do you think of this sure to be amazing museum finally finding a home? And what do you hope to see in it when it does open its door to the public? Let us know down below in the comments.
