THE PENGUIN Shows What Kind of Hero Gotham Really Needs BATMAN To Be
The Penguin’s Oswald Cobb, who first appeared in The Batman, is not a hero. He’s an opportunistic murderer building a criminal empire by flooding Gotham’s streets with a highly addictive drug. And yet, he’s far from the city’s biggest villain. Not because he pays his people well and looks after his neighborhood, though. Politicians and oligarchs were redirecting energy from its most vulnerable citizens in Crown Point to the richest parts of town. It took Oz brow-beating a corrupt councilman in the show’s sixth episode “Gold Summit” to fix that gross injustice.
That disgusting behavior by city leaders is the latest evidence of the kind of hero Gotham really needs. Gotham doesn’t need a masked figure to fight foot soldiers or costumed villains. It needs someone who can stop the people truly destroying the city. It needs Bruce Wayne to go after his own people, the kind of hero we might get in The Batman 2.

In The Batman director Matt Reeves showed his Gotham is truly rotten to the core. Every iteration of that legendary locale has bad cops and unethical political leaders. But this iteration’s Carmine Falcone was the de facto king of the city. He controlled everyone and everything with impunity. Yet, he wasn’t the the villain Batman took down in the movie. Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne wasn’t interested in Falcone at all. The Riddler made it his life mission to shine a light on the city’s mass corruption. Without Edward Nashton a crooked mayor, a crooked police commissioner, and a crooked district attorney would have continued to sell out the citizens of Gotham for an amoral mobster forever.
However, like the Penguin, the Riddler was no hero. He killed and tortured people before flooding the city, harming the very same people he’d claimed he wanted to help free. Both criminal masterminds were/have been able to amass loyal followings in the first place, though, because of Gotham’s leaders. The city’s elites, both at city hall and its wealthiest citizens, took and took and took until everyone else had almost nothing. The people trusted to look after people left nothing. Opportunists like Nashton and Cobb thrived by filling in that void, the way criminals always can when people lack basic life necessities.

That’s especially true in this Gotham because the famous figures who will make up Batman’s rogues gallery are not this city’s biggest villains. Its biggest villains are corrupt government officials, the uber wealthy, and shady police. People like the Riddler, the Penguin, and even Sofia Gigante are merely symptoms of the real disease that has long infected Gotham: greed.
That greed—greed for money, status, sex, power, and control—made it possible for a ruthless but smart monster like Carmine Falcone to control Gotham. An anonymous nobody like The Riddler understood that even when Bruce Wayne, a man who grew up in that privileged world, didn’t. And he was too busy beating up low level street thugs to notice while Edward Nashton was investigating the mayor.

If Batman wants to make good on his promise from the end of his first film and bring hope to Gotham, he needs to start fighting the root cause of the city’s corruption. You don’t get better by treating symptoms, you get better by treating the cause of them. He won’t be able to heal Gotham by fighting people in places like Crown Point. Batman will have to start fighting the enemies in his own neighborhood, the kind of place where the city was sending electricity.
Even without Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne being a part of HBO’s show, that realization might be exactly where The Penguin is leading him in The Batman 2. The spinoff series has expanded—in deep, personal ways—the kind of harm done by people like Carmine Falcone and his powerful enablers. Vic lost his family because a madman was the only one who cared to stop mass corruption. Whole neighborhoods, already neglected, were then abandoned so the rich wouldn’t have to make any sacrifices. And who made that decision? Who has always stepped on the downtrodden to climb higher? The exact people Batman could fight in his next film.

Reeves has said his sequel is “going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption.” The movie will go to places Batman “couldn’t even anticipate in the first one.” That sounds a lot like the Court of Owls, a secret cabal of the city’s most powerful and richest elites who control everything from the shadows. Those are exactly the people Batman needs to stop if he wants to stop Oz Cobb and whomever would replace him anyway. The Penguin only thrives, like a mushroom, in darkness. Suffering in Gotham grows like a fungus because the terrible city, run by terrible people, lives in darkness.
The city’s poorest citizens are hopeless and eager to forget their miseries with Bliss. They’re happy to follow Edward Nashton’s plans to murder mayoral candidates. They’re happy to work for a monster like Oz Cobb because he’ll put money in their pocket. They’ll do those terrible things because at least those criminals offering something. Something is better than the nothing the rich have given them.
There will be nothing until a hero can offer them something better. In Gotham the only way to do that is to get rid of the disease that has long made the city sick. The Penguin has shown Gotham needs Batman to realize who its true villains really are. They aren’t villains with memorable names and costumes; they’re the rich and powerful, Bruce Wayne’s own kind.

James Wan Reveals 16 Essential Movies on His Halloween Vampire Watchlist
When we think of Halloween iconography, we think of ghosts, witches, werewolves, and of course, vampires. Dracula and his undead ilk have gone hand-in-hand with spooky season since Bela Lugosi first donned the cape almost a century ago. So it’s fitting that for Halloween 2024, modern master of horror James Wan, creator of the Saw and Conjuring franchises, has released his Vampire Watchlist of must-see bloodsucker movies on Instagram. He posted a list of sixteen iconic vampire movies to watch, up to the current remake of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot, now streaming on Max.
This list is, for the most part, pretty spot on. And it actually reflects our own list of some of the most iconic modern vampire films ever. The inclusion of Bram Stoker’s Dracula from Francis Ford Coppola is a no-brainer. Also a no-brainer are the OG cinematic undead, Nosferatu and Universal’s Dracula from 1931. Horror of Dracula, which made Christopher Lee the version of the Count for Baby Boomers, is also included. 1979’s Salem’s Lot, which traumatized young Gen Xers with the floating vampire kid in the window, gets a nod. Other iconic ’80s/’90s films made the cut, like Fright Night, Near Dark, Interview with the Vampire, and Blade.

There are some great deeper cuts in this list too. The Night Stalker, a TV movie from the early ’70s that led to a series, is a classic many have forgotten today. The Vampire Lovers, Vampire Circus, and Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter are vintage Hammer films that don’t get nearly enough recognition. And the Italian Planet of the Vampires was actually an inspiration for Ridley Scott’s original Alien. Although we may have to have some words with Mr. Wan about including Subspecies 2. Especially over The Lost Boys, From Dusk Till Dawn, and Let the Right One In. Oh, and What We Do in the Shadows! We think any one of those is better than Subspecies, but we suppose every list needs a curveball entry, right?

FEAR STREET: PROM QUEEN Reveals Its Poster and Release Window
Netflix’s Fear Street trilogy brought R.L. Stine’s frankly underrated horror books to life with a story that spanned decades. We went to Shadyside, a cursed town with a long history of murder and mayhem until Deena Johnson finally freed them from this horrible cycle in 1994. Like Goosebumps, the Fear Street books were an anthology series that told many spooky stories, so fans were hopeful that the trilogy’s success would lead to more adventures. And we know more about when that’s going to happen. Fear Street will return to Netflix with a fourth installment titled Fear Street: Prom Queen in 2025. The streaming service and R.L. Stine confirmed the release window via social media and there’s so much to look forward to.
Return to Shadyside High for one unforgettable night.

Fear Street: Prom Queen comes Netflix in 2025 🔪🩸 pic.twitter.com/W1heyY5SSc
First, this film is going to take us to Shadyside High School once again for a brand-new and dark story. Here’s a quick synopsis for the upcoming Fear Street film from Netflix:
Welcome back to Shadyside. In this next installment of the blood-soaked Fear Street franchise, prom season at Shadyside High is underway and the school’s wolfpack of It Girls is busy with its usual sweet and vicious campaigns for the crown. But when a gutsy outsider is unexpectedly nominated to the court, and the other girls start mysteriously disappearing, the class of ’88 is suddenly in for one hell of a prom night.
As evidenced by its title, this film will draw specifically from the 1992 book The Prom Queen. That story lines up pretty closely with the above synopsis, so we will see how it plays out in live-action. A new cast will take the lead of course, but there’s a small chance that we will see familiar characters make cameos, too. Christine Berman and Nick Goode were around and likely in their 20s at the time and that would tie the story somewhat into the events we saw in 1978 and 1994.

Robert Downey Jr. Refuses to Let Hollywood Use His Likeness for AI
To a generation of moviegoers, Robert Downey Jr. is a hero. Maybe even the hero after 10 years playing Iron Man. But now the Oscar winner is a hero in the fight against companies using AI to replicate actor’s likenesses. Specifically, his own. The actor appeared on the On with Kara Swisher podcast to discuss, among other things, his work on the new Broadway play McNeal which takes aim at corporate giants in the AI space such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. In the interview, via Variety, Downey says he plans to sue “all future executives” who intend to replicate his likeness.

The long and short of it is RDJ doesn’t want studios to replicate his likeness or performance via AI or Deepfake technology. This practice has come under scrutiny, especially with regard to actors who have passed on. Just this year, the digital replication of actor Ian Holm’s image and likeness was used as a major character in Alien: Romulus. Holm passed away in 2020, well before Romulus went into production. Despite getting permission from his estate, we still have no idea if Holm himself would have approved.
When it comes to Robert Downey Jr., we know. And he does not want. Swisher asked him if he’s worried about his likeness being used, for example, in future Marvel projects. Downey responded:
“I am not worried about them hijacking my character’s soul because there’s like three or four guys and gals who make all the decisions there anyway and they would never do that to me, with or without me.”

However, when asked about people in the future, he said, “I would like to here state that I intend to sue all future executives just on spec.” When Swisher countered that he’d be dead, the actor was quick to retort. “But my law firm will still be very active.”
The slippery slope of giving up the rights to your own image will only get slicker as this issue keeps unfolding. One of the major aspects of both the SAG-AFTRA and the WGA strikes of 2023 dealt with studios would not simply replace actors and writers with AI. Digital facsimiles of people aren’t people, but they certainly are cheaper. It’ll take more people with clout like Robert Downey Jr. speaking up about it to stave off the AI apocalypse.

An English Language SQUID GAME Series Is in the Works at Netflix, David Fincher Set to Develop
Fans of Squid Game are ready for season two to hit Netflix soon. The series will end with a third and final season but that doesn’t mean that stories from this universe are over quite yet. Deadline reports that an English language Squid Game series is in the works at Netflix with David Fincher attached to develop it. This would be the first scripted series to be based off of this show.

Netflix isn’t commenting at this time and there are very few details right now. At this point, we may not even know if an English language Squid Game show with David Fincher will see the light of day. We do know how often streaming services cancel shows, sometimes before they even get to fans. Things do seem a bit different here considering that Squid Game has a huge audience and David Fincher’s name is very well-known. He’s done quite a few projects for Netflix, including Mindhunter and House of Cards. Let’s see what happens with this series.

SCREAM 7 Gets a February 2026 Release Date, Patrick Dempsey in Talks to Return
Despite a slew of controversy over the past two years, the Scream franchise is moving forward with its seventh installment. The previous film left the Core Four and Gale Weathers (we assume, considering she didn’t die) in a relatively good place, with Sam finally moving towards healing and peace after killing Richie’s remaining family. (It’s wild but true.) The Scream VII storyline and cast is still mostly a mystery, but things will start rolling very soon. In a recent Entertainment Weekly interview, Neve Campbell confirmed a bit about the film’s storyline, saying that it would follow Sidney Prescott as the main character once again.
In Scream (2022), Sidney’s story took a back seat to Sam and Tara Carpenter’s drama with her appearing as a supporting cast member. It’s good to know that the focus is on Sidney again. It’s also good to know when we’ll actually see her back up on the big screen. Scream VII arrive in February 2026.
In addition to Campbell’s return, other familiar faces may also be back. When asked if he might return as Mark Kincaid, Sidney Prescott’s Scream husband, Patrick Dempsey said it was possible. Dempsey noted of reprising his role in Scream 7, “I’m waiting on the script, “There has been a conversation about it. I haven’t seen anything yet, so we’ll see what happens. … It’s always good to have a job.”

The next film will be interesting, to say the least. Who will don that infamous mask next? Here’s what we know about Scream 7.
Title
For now, we will call this film Scream 7. It’s likely this will be the title, which could be stylized as Scream VII. As seen on this script from Campbell’s Instagram post, the film does not have an official title yet.
Scream 7’s Plot
As stated above, Sam and Tara’s story came to a neat conclusion in Scream VI. And Sidney is living a happy life with her husband Mark and her daughters. It seems like there was no one else hiding in the shadows who would want to kill Sidney. Her story was complete and she found peace. So, the plot of Scream 7 is really up in the air. Depending on this film’s release, someone from 30 years ago could decide to celebrate the events of Scream (1996) in a sinister way. We shall see.
Neve Campbell says she expects to get the final script sometime in August, so hopefully nothing will leak before they are ready to tell.
Behind-the-ScenesKevin Williamson, the writer of Scream (1996), will direct Scream 7. He is replacing Christopher Landon, who left the film after Melissa Barerra’s controversial (and very upsetting) firing and Jenna Ortega’s exit. Guy Busick and James Vanderbilt, who wrote the last two installments, will pen this sequel. The Radio Silence team will step back from directing duties to executive produce Scream 7.
In a recent IndieWire interview, Campbell confirmed that filming will start in December 2024.
“We were supposed to start in September, but we’re going to start in December now because of some scheduling stuff with Kevin and myself and having that all aligned,” she shared. “And actually, I think it’s a good thing, because we’re going to be able to have the time to get it really right. So I’m very excited about it.”
Scream 7’s CastRight now, the only person we absolutely know will be in Scream 7 is Neve Campbell. Scream VI was the first film to not include Sidney Prescott due to actress Neve Campbell rightfully bowing out due to a salary dispute. Fans thought Sidney would finally get a happy ending but Ghostface just won’t leave our good sis alone. Variety reports that Courteney Cox is in talks to reprise her role in the next film. It remains to be seen if the Meeks-Martin twins, played by Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding, will be in this film. We’d love to see more of them.
However, their return isn’t likely considering their characters’ stories being so closely intertwined with the Carpenter sisters. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Savoy Brown hasn’t received a call from the studio Spyglass Media Group as of January 2024. Gooding also affirmed he knew no solid details about the seventh Scream film. Sadness.
We assume Courteney Cox and Roger L. Jackson will return as Gale Weathers and the voice of Ghostface, respectively. Maybe we will see Patrick Dempsey reprise his role as Mark Kincaid, too.
Scream 7 Release DateScream 7 will arrive in theaters on February 27, 2026. The cast and crew shared the release date on social media.

The Wayans Brothers Are Filming a SCARY MOVIE Reboot in 2025
Like the original Scream film that it parodies, the first Scary Movie film (2000) changed the game and inspired many films to follow as well as its own franchise. The first two Scary Movie films were developed by Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, and Keenen Ivory Wayans. As we all know, they are three brothers from the iconic Wayans comedian family who gave us gifts like In Living Color, The Wayans Bros., and more. Marlon and Shawn starred in the first two Scary Movie films as weed-smoking Shorty and Ray, respectively. The Wayans departed the franchise after those first two films and its quality took a significant nosedive as a result. Now, 18 years after Scary Movie 2, the Wayans brothers are returning to the franchise for a reboot film with Miramax and Paramount.

According to Deadline, the announcement came at CinemaCon and the new film will shoot sometime in 2025. It is not clear at this time if Marlon or Shawn Wayans will reprise their previous roles or stay behind the camera. “We are thrilled to reunite Scary Movie with the Wayans brothers, the brilliant creators behind the beloved franchise,” said Miramax Boss Jonathan Glickman. “The timing is perfect to bring back the series to the big screen and we’re lucky to have Keenen, Marlon and Shawn’s unique comedic vision bringing it to audiences around the world.”
The Wayans brothers released a statement saying, “We couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the new Scary Movie and work with each other again. This is a franchise we created more than 20 years ago. We remember people laughing in the aisles and hope to see that happen again. We look forward to working with Jonathan Glickman and his team at the new Miramax to bring these laughs to theaters, where they belong. It’s a double reunion.”
The first two Scary Movie films absolutely have some humor that wouldn’t fly in today’s world, but the Wayans are comedic geniuses who know how to tailor and adapt to the times. Let’s see what they choose to parody in this new silly movie.

JUMANJI 3’s Release Date Is Confirmed for 2026
Jumanji is returning for its third installment in 2026 during the holiday season. Sony Pictures announced that Jumanji 3 will be released on Dec. 6. The main original cast and the director of the previous two films, Jake Kasdan, will be returning.

The cast of the film is stacked like the previous two. Although, a stacked cast doesn’t necessarily carry the entire film. Nevertheless, Kevin Hart, Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black will reprise their roles as Franklin “Mouse” Finbar, Dr. Xander “Smolder” Bravestone, Ruby Roundhouse, and Professor Sheldon “Shelly” Oberon, respectively, in Jumanji 3.
Johnson and Kasdan will return as producers, along with Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Matt Tolmach, who all produced the second film, Jumanji: The Next Level. The film will screen in both IMAX and large premium formats.
The new-age Jumanji film franchise is based on the original 1995 film of the same name, which was, in turn, based on a children’s book from 1981. The original Jumanji film had a sequel called Zathura in 2005. In 2017, the series returned with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, earning over $950 million at the box office. The sequel two years later made over $800 million. So, if you’re wondering why there is a Jumanji 3, then that’s your answer.

With so many high-profile actors in the main cast, it was hard to coordinate shooting schedules to begin production, said Gillan.
“I’m sure it’s tricky to wrangle everyone’s schedules, but I haven’t heard anything about it other than the fact that we will be doing it at some point. So we’re all so enthusiastic about it. We all love working on those films, and it’s just a matter of when.” Gillan told The Hollywood Reporter.
With just over two years till Jumanji 3, you definitely have time to catch up on the entire Jumanji film franchise. You can find the original Jumanji and its sequel, Zathura: A Space Adventure, on Netflix. The newer Jumanji’s are available to stream on Hulu.

Watch Timothée Chalamet Show Up to His Own Lookalike Contest
Does actor Timothée Chalamet just have one of those faces? Do a lot of people just look that much like the Dune and Wonka star? Well, popular YouTuber Anthony Po sure seems to think so. Over the last weekend of October, he organized a Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest in Washington Square Park in New York City, which drew some pretty huge crowds. And most shockingly, the 28-year-old actor showed up himself, much to the delight of many of his adoring fans. You can watch a clip of Timothée Chalamet at his own lookalike contest down below:
Timothée Chalamet making a surprise appearance at his look-alike contest in NYC. pic.twitter.com/z5hdXTVfpN
— Film Updates (@FilmUpdates) October 27, 2024
They advertised the Timothée Chalamet lookalike event in New York via a metric ton of flyers, as well as a Partiful invite, which apparently drew thousands of RSVPs. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Partiful also ended up sponsoring part of the event. This included the $50 cash prizes ultimately given out to everyone who entered. Ultimately, they fined Anthony Po $500 for “Hosting an unauthorized costume contest” in Washington Square Park. No doubt all the publicity was worth it. They even arrested one of the Timothée Chalamet lookalikes for causing a ruckus, although Anthony Po did bail them out.

The winner of the contest was someone by the name of Miles Mitchell. Like most contestants, he dressed up as the Willy Wonka version of Timothée Chalamet. Judging from the brief video we saw, it seems Wonka was the overall number one choice among the legion of Chalamets. We’re actually relieved it wasn’t someone looking like Chalamet in Call Me By Your Name. That movie has too much potential for disturbing costume props. (I’ve you’ve seen the film, you know what we mean). Given the mild chaos of this event, will there be a Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest, take two? If so, we’re rooting for the Paul Atreides Dune Chalamet this time.

Realistic Jack-O-Lanterns of Celebrity Faces Go Viral
These pumpkin carvings look AI-created but we assure you they’re real. At first glance, they look like a mush of pumpkin that hasn’t been fully carved through, but they become masterpieces when light shines from within. Pumpkin carver extraordinaire Karrah Youngblood is going viral on TikTok for her hyper-realistic pumpkin carvings.

Youngblood, a native of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, has recently gained notoriety for her extremely detailed pumpkin art of different celebrity faces. Youngblood has made the faces of various celebrities like Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce, and Zendaya. She said this year she would try only to make women, but Travis Kelce was the exception.
A graphic designer by trade, Youngblood uses a technique based on lights and shadows to create specific facial features. It all begins with a black and white template she creates on her computer. Then, using thumbtacks, she punches the design onto the pumpkin, using it to guide her carving.

However, when you look at them at first, they look…well, not the best. The pumpkin details aren’t fully visible until they are lit from the inside. All the details and depth of features are visible with light. Her viral videos take advantage of the unsuspecting look of the unlit pumpkin, then go on to do a reveal by turning off the lights and lighting up the pumpkin.

Youngblood’s TikTok videos have garnered over 20 million views. Her comments are full of praise from “GET THIS IN A MUSEUM” to “Fantastic. I’ll take 12.” In an interview with NPR, Youngblood underscored how important people’s support is.
I was standing in my kitchen. I just started bawling. It was just overwhelming, the nice things that were being said. And I’m like, they’re not being said about my face,” Youngblood said. “They’re not being said about, you know, my car. They’re being said about something I created.”
If you can’t get enough of the spooky spirit and want more pumpkin-everything, check out this video explaining the levels of pumpkin carving or how these cute animals eat them.
To celebrate this upcoming Halloween, Youngblood is sharing her self-made Taylor Swift pumpkin carving template free of cost on her website, Pumpkin Brains. So maybe you can try your hand at the craft; who knows, you may just go viral.
