We’re thrilled to exclusively reveal Drake Hatcher, an all-new card from Magic: The Gathering‘s Foundations main set. We’re sure devoted Magic fans will be thrilled to introduce themselves to this human wizard whom they’ve never seen before. Foundations’ Drake Hatcher is a Blue mana Magic card. (If you’re new to Magic and want to know more about what that means, then the Foundations Beginner Box can certainly help out with that.) In short, we’ll say that Blue mana speaks to the mutability and potential. It’s a perfect color for a Foundations Magic card that’s all about new life. (We also imagine it helped color the adorable creature we see depicted in the gorgeous art of Drake Hatcher.)

This new Magic: The Gathering Foundations card lets you, you guessed it, hatch your own drake. Cue up the “awwwws.” In addition to its main form, the Drake Hatcher Magic card comes in two additional variant forms in the Foundations main set: Borderless and Extended. The Extended version of Drake Hatcher has the same art as the main version. But the Borderless version lets you enjoy a whole new side of your drake-ling. And yes, that’s a total of three adorable Drake Hatcher varients.

This Foundations Magic card has the following description, “Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, put that many incubation counters on it.” and “Remove three incubation counters from this creature: Create 2/2 blue Drake creature token with flying.” What could be more satisfying than hatching a drake? We need this in our deck, stat.

The second Foundations Magic: The Gathering card we’re revealing today is Gensis Wave. The Genesis Wave Magic: The Gathering card has appeared before in a few different sets—but this Foundations version of the card has a whole new look, two of them, to be exact. Those familiar with this card will know that it’s a fairly rare card and drenched in Green mana. Green, of course, speaks to the wild nature of the Gensis Wave and the way its sorcery might cause some fascinating evolutions in your Magic game. The description of Genesis Wave is as follows, “Reveal the top X cards of your library. You may put any number of permanent cards with mana value X or less from among them onto the battlefield. Then put all cards revealed this way that weren’t put onto the battlefield into your graveyard.” Definitely a handy card to draw in a pinch.

In the Foundations deck, this Magic: The Gathering card takes on two new looks and comes in Main and Borderless variants. We love the eerie swirling form the card takes on in its Borderless state. And the awe-inspiring plant-like form it takes in its main version is also truly magnificent. It really brings in that Green mana element strongly.

Wonder Man’s Comics History Points to a ‘Hollywood Hero’ Series

One of the most stalwart Avengers from the pages of Marvel Comics is finally making his way into the MCU. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is taking on the role of superhero/movie star Simon Williams for the new Disney+ series Wonder Man, debuting in December, 2025. Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton is working together with Andrew Guest, producer of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Community, to bring the character to life in a new series. With Guest on board, we can safely assume the MCU Wonder Man series will have a more comedic bent, similar to Marvel Studio’s She-Hulk.

But you might be wondering who the heck Marvel’s Wonder Man even is and if he’s somehow related to Wonder Woman. Well, she’s a DC hero, and he’s a Marvel one, so that should answer your question. (Although the two did arm wrestle once in a crossover event, which Diana very likely won). Here’s the skinny on the so-called “Ionic Avenger,” and our theories on just what an MCU Disney+ series about the adventures of Simon Williams’ Wonder Man might look like.

Marvel’s Wonder Man: The Seventh AvengerThe first appearance of Wonder Man, in the pages of Avengers in 1964.Marvel Comics

Wonder Man was actually one of the earliest Marvel heroes ever inducted into the Avengers. He first appeared in Avengers #9, way back in 1964, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Technically, he was the seventh member to be inducted into the team. However, Wonder Man seemingly died in the very issue Marvel introduced him. He didn’t come back to life on a more permanent basis for another 12 years, in 1976. As for why he was sidelined for so long, Stan Lee insisted that DC Comics threatened legal action due to Wonder Woman. But once DC introduced a Power Girl after Marvel introduced Power Man (Luke Cage) first, it seemed they had no legal legs to stand on. And thus, Wonder Man returned to the pages of Marvel Comics. We assume the MCU won’t follow this precedent when Wonder Man finally arrives on our screens.

A Wonderous Origin Story for Wonder ManWonder Man 1979 costumeMarvel Comics

Simon Williams was a spoiled trust fund baby, heir to the company and fortune of Sandford Williams. But his bad business decisions ran Williams Innovations into the ground, and Simon blamed the company’s biggest rival, Stark Industries. He accepted an offer from the villainous Baron Zemo to gain ionic powers in an experiment. And thus, Marvel’s Wonder Man was born. Wonder-Man’s powers included super strength, invulnerability, and in later years, flight and energy projection. It’s too early to know which power the MCU version of Wonder Man will retain from his comics counterpart.

The Grim Reaper, Eric Williams, fights his brother and the Avengers.Marvel Comics

Simon Williams thus took on the identity of a new Marvel superhero named Wonder Man. And then, under Zemo’s orders, Wonder Man infiltrated Tony Stark’s team. All with the intent of destroying Iron Man and the Avengers from within. But Simon had a change of heart after serving with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Unable to betray his new teammates, he dies defending them from Zemo’s Masters of Evil. His criminal brother Eric Williams adopts the identity of the Grim Reaper. Grim Reaper then seeks revenge on the Avengers, blaming them for Wonder Man’s death. In the process, he becomes one of their worst enemies.

From Bad Guy to Essential AvengerThe many costumes of Simon Williams, the Wonder Man.Marvel Comics

But, of course, Simon wasn’t really dead. The body of this Marvel hero went into an “ionic coma,” during which time Hank Pym recorded Wonder Man’s brain patterns. Patterns that would later form the basis for the mind of the android Vision. Eventually, Simon would emerge from his coma, and rejoin the Avengers in earnest. His brother Eric now hated Simon for siding with the Avengers after he became their enemy, causing that relationship to fall apart. But Simon had a new sibling now, as he considered Vision his “brother,” since they shared brain patterns. Wonder Man’s connection to Vision could come strongly into play in his MCU future.

He also made best friends with the X-Men’s Beast. Wonder Man also founded the West Coast Avengers and began a long career in the movies, trading on his superhero status to become an actor. And he’s been juggling those two roles ever since.

Simon Williams, the Avenger known as Wonder Man.Marvel ComicsNathan Fillion as Wonder Man? (It Almost Happened)

Wonder Man very nearly made it into the MCU before, albeit in a minor way. There were Easter egg movie posters in the background of the Earth-based scenes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that featured Marvel’s Wonder Man. And the face used for these Wonder Man posters was none other than Castle and Firefly actor Nathan Fillion. But those scenes were cut from the final film. Perhaps even back then, Kevin Feige had other things in mind for the Superstar Avenger.

Marvel’s Wonder Man in the MCU(L) Yayha Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams (R) Wonder Man in '80s Marvel Comics.Marvel Studios/Marvel Comics

We’ll probably see several key differences between the Marvel Comics Wonder Man origin story and the one Yahya Abdul-Mateen’s version will have in the MCU. Judging from the brief glimpse we saw in the Marvel Studios teaser trailer for 2025, it seems Simon Williams was an actor before becoming a superhero, and not the other way around. We see him auditioning for the role of “Wonder Man” in a movie or TV show of the same name. This is a significant departure from the comics. Is the premise of Wonder Man that of an actor who actually becomes the fictional superhero role he’s playing?

Wonder Man fighting robots in early 80s Marvel Comics.Marvel Comics

We can see why Marvel Studios made this change. Unless we see extensive (and expensive) flashbacks, we don’t see how the comic book origin, with Baron Zemo giving powers to Simon to go after Tony Stark, works. Marvel Studios would have to bring back Daniel Bruhl and Robert Downey Jr. for that, and we’d be very surprised if that happened. So Wonder Man’s MCU mandates a massive retooling. Although, at one point in the teaser, we see Simon wearing his signature red jacket, black turtleneck, and red shades from the ’80s comics. That, at least, remains comics-accurate.

Wonder Man in the 2000s Marvel ComicsMarvel Comics

With a Vision series coming soon, Marvel might still find a way to tie Wonder Man and Vision together in the MCU, as per the comics. So how could this work? Perhaps, in an effort to regain a more human personality without the mind stone, Vision fuses with Wonder Man’s ion-powered mind. This would be a way to tie the two characters together in a way that is similar to the comics. And if the Scarlet Witch ever returns, it might make for a very interesting love triangle. In Marvel’s comics, Wanda once brought Wonder Man back to life after one of his many deaths as being of pure energy. Of course, the character of Simon Williams could definitely stand on his own. But could Marvel Studios resist incorporating two of their biggest assets, Wanda and Vision, into the proceedings? We doubt it.

The love triangle of Wonder Man, Scarlet Witch, and Vision.Marvel ComicsWonder Man Could Be Marvel Studios’ First Hero-Turned-Star in His Series

So far, in the MCU, we’ve seen superheroes as celebrities, like Iron Man. In fact, all of the Avengers have public identities, with the exception of Spider-Man. But we’ve never seen one parlay that fame into getting jobs on the big screen or doing product endorsement the way Wonder Man might in the MCU. Wonder Man is the ultimate celebrity/hero. He is someone who has to juggle the ridiculousness of life as a movie star with actually helping people. And that aspect of the Marvel hero’s could make for one interesting MCU Wonder Man series.

Wonder Man in ion energy form.Marvel Comics

Series like The Boys have dealt with this idea, but mostly in a satirical way. They’ve never really done a deep dive into what it means to be both hero and movie star. A Wonder Man series would be the perfect opportunity. It’s also perfect for a comedic angle because we’d likely see exaggerated movie versions of MCU heroes. We’ve seen Yaya Abdul-Mateen play a supervillain in Aquaman and a super god in Watchmen, so we know he can pull off a Marvel super movie star in Wonder Man.

Wonder Man officially drops on Disney+ in December, 2025.

PADDINGTON IN PERU Trailer Promises a Bearrific Adventure

We’re all overdue for a blessing. And we could definitely use some additional joy. Frankly, we’ll take any ounce of happiness we can get. Thankfully StudioCanal, a French film production and distribution company, gave us the best possible entertainment news when they confirmed Paddington 3 was officially in the works. What. A. Gift.

The movie will continue the utterly charming story of Paddington the bear. The StudioCanal representative specifically told Variety: “We can confirm StudioCanal is working very hard on film 3 with the utmost craft and care—as with film 1 and 2.” That’s tremendous news since the first two Paddington movies are so lovely. Since we first received this exciting confirmation, we’ve learned more about Paddington 3‘s title (Paddington in Peru), team, and release date along with a trailer.

Here’s what we know about the bearrific movie.

Paddington Bear, Paddington 3 is in the worksStudioCanalPaddington in Peru‘s Release Date

Paddington in Peru will release in the US on January 17, 2025. In the UK, meanwhile, it will release two months earlier, on November 8, 2024, according to Deadline. It doesn’t seem fair to have to wait the extra months for new Paddington adventures, but we guess we’ll take more of the franchise whenever we can get it.

Paddington 3‘s Title, Team, and Cast

Recently we learned who will direct the third Paddington film. Dougal Wilson will direct the movie. And the title? As mentioned, Paddington in Peru. We like how dramatic this sounds. Wilson takes over the lovable bear movies from director Paul King. King directed the first two installments. And as for Wilson, he comes from a background of music videos and commercials. Paddington in Peru marks his theatrical feature debut. The movie filmed in London and Peru. Production was slated to begin production on July 24.

Additionally, Deadline notes that the cast consists of “Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer, Antonio Banderas, Olivia Colman, Julie Walters, Madeleine Harris, Samuel Joslin, Jim Broadbent, and Carla Tous with both Ben Whishaw and Imelda Staunton returning as the respective voices of Paddington and Aunt Lucy.”

In case you aren’t familiar, the popular Paddington Bear stories by author Michael Bond and artists including Peggy Fortnum inspire the Paddington movies. The first live-action film debuted in 2014, with a sequel following in 2017. Both films made bank and warmed hearts as audiences watched Paddington make a home with the Brown family in London. Ben Whishaw voices the titular bear; actors such as Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters, and Sally Hawkins star in the movies alongside him. At the end of Paddington 2, the bear reunited with his adoptive aunt Lucy.

Who Is Riri ‘Ironheart’ Williams? Her Marvel Comics Character History, Explained

The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to grow with a slate of new shows and films coming in Phase Five and beyond. One of those new series coming to Disney+ is Ironheart, a live-action show starring Dominique Thorne as Riri “Ironheart” Williams coming in Fall 2023. And, before we get Riri’s origin story, we finally got to meet her in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as she works alongside Shuri. Some comic fans may be familiar with Riri’s story; she starts as child genius, and winds up the latest hero to don an advanced suit à la Tony Stark’s famous armor. But if you didn’t get into the comics, or just want a quick rundown of Riri’s Williams history, this guide to Ironheart is right here for you.

The Comic Origin Story of Riri Willaims a.k.a. Ironheartphoto of riri ironheart williams original runMarvel Comics

Riri Williams made her debut in 2015’s Invincible Iron Man #7. She quickly captured fans’ hearts in a couple of appearances as a brilliant Black girl and Tony Stark fan who creates her own suit of armor. The two eventually meet and enjoy a mutual respect for one other. There was initial controversy behind Riri because she was created by white male comic creator Brian Michael Bendis; meanwhile, no Black women writers played a role in crafting her persona. A sexualized cover image (which was later changed) of the teen hero also caused a righteous stir over how Black girls and women are seen in society.

The success of Riri’s character led to her own Invincible Iron Man: Ironheart comic series in 2016. The series gave us a more in-depth look at Riri’s background and life. She’s a 15-year-old Chicago native living with her mother and paternal Aunt Sharon after her father’s death. Riri attends the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on an engineering scholarship. The teen genius designs a suit using stolen materials from campus and makes some serious enemies in the process.

Riri becomes a crime-fighting superheroine, to her aunt’s dismay, and her work captures the eye of her tech idol Tony Stark. He gives her his stamp of approval to become the next ironclad hero this world needs. After the events of Civil War II, Riri takes Tony’s place following his coma and later becomes Ironheart. This is essentially where we are in the MCU with Tony’s sacrificial death. Right now is obviously a good time for Riri to step into the suit and become the next iron savior. In the comics, Pepper and Riri often crossed paths, with the former showing concern over the latter’s superheroine life and safety.

Riri also appears in some crossover comic material. She saves Moon Girl, the smartest person in the Marvel Universe, and helps her ward off Doctor Doom. The character also goes up against Hydra in Marvel’s Secret Empire (2017) storyline.

Allow Me to Reintroduce Myself: My Name Is Riri Williams ironheart on cover one with suit floating through the airMarvel Comics/Kevin Libranda

In 2018, Ironheart entered a new era; Eve Ewing, a Black woman writer, scholar, and Chicago native, took over the writing mantle. The series, Ironheart, showed Riri fully coming into her own as a hero. She breaks free from being seen as simply a “girl Iron Man” as she uncovers secrets surrounding a friend’s kidnapping.

During this era, Riri also appears in the 2019 Marvel Rising: Heart of Iron animated special for an MIT-based storyline. And she is a part of a hero collective known as the Champions. They are a group of younger heroes in the Marvel Universe including Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel, and Cyclops. Ironheart was set for yet another comic run in 2020 but after only a couple of issues, it was cancelled due to the pandemic.

However, in Ironheart, Riri unites with Shuri, Okoye, and others in a fight against Ten Rings. Once again, with what we get in Phase Four, this is the right time to bring Riri Williams to the MCU.

How Will Ironheart Fit Into the MCU? image of ironheart's face in the middle of her suit's helmet display black panther wakanda forever Marvel Studios

This comic connection to Shuri did play out in a different way in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Director Ryan Coogler spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the character, noting that she is a foil of sorts to the Wakandan princess. “She brings a different type of energy, but she also has some similarities to characters that we’ve seen in this universe before,” Coogler explains. “The film deals with a lot of things, but one of them is foils — people who exist in contrast, but there’s a thread of similarity. In this film, we get to see Shuri meet someone who has some things in common with her but is also very, very different.”

In the film, Riri stuck to her roots of being a Chicago native, inventor, and engineering student who builds an iron suit like Tony Stark’s. However, she’s aged up a bit to 19, which makes her more of Shuri’s peer. They connect with each other after discovering that Riri is in danger because of a vibranium detection machine she’s built. This upsets Namor, who wants to kill her to make sure there’s no way for others to use/build one to find his underwater world. Queen Ramonda gives her life to save Riri’s and in return the young hero stands with Wakanda in the short-lived war against the Talokans. She returns back home but it is not clear if she will go back to her school studies or go full-on hero.

What does this bode for Riri’s MCU future? We will have to wait and see. This film leaves us with a lot of questions about MCU Ironheart and her life, which are ripe for exploring through the series. We do know that she will cross paths with Parker Robbins aka The Hood, who uses said hood to tap into magic and darker arts. And, Thorne will continue to work with Ryan Coogler, who serves as an executive producer for the Ironheart series.

This teaser for Ironheart reveals that Riri will get into some bad things before she fully finds herself as a hero.

The show could have gone in a different direction, like exploring the Riri-Pepper comic relationship in live-action. Gwyneth Paltrow is open to reprising her role, after all. But that doesn’t seem to be the case based on what we have seen so far. It’s not impossible though. There is also a chance for War Machine a.k.a. Rhodey, who is getting his own movie, to connect with Ironheart as a guide. Considering her show is coming first, that could set up what we see in the Armor Wars film… if we ever get it.

And, if Riri spends some time at MIT, maybe we will get a small breadcrumb of seeing MJ and Ned (both students there now) alongside our iron hero in the Ironheart series. The show, like Ms. Marvel and others, will put most of its effort into establishing Riri Williams as a person and her journey into becoming Ironheart. We can’t wait to see Ironheart when it hits Disney+ on June 24, 2025. It’s time to see more Black girls taking on the MCU with intelligence, tenacity, and bravery.

Everything We Know About Marvel’s IRONHEART Series

In 2020, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige announced that Riri Williams, a.k.a. Ironheart, would spring to life from comic pages in her own original series starring Dominique Thorne. Ironheart will be part of Phase Five. While details about the series are still pretty scarce, Riri Williams’ comic history will provide its foundation. We finally met Riri “Ironheart” Williams in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, an appearance that set the stage for diving into her story.

Here’s the first true teaser for Ironheart, and it shows Riri getting into some possibly bad deeds in order to fund her big dreams. We also get a look at The Hood, who will act as an antagonist in the series.

At its recent Upfronts presentation, Disney revealed that the Ironheart series would release in 2025. We are incredibly glad to hear it and can’t wat to see Riri Williams again. Marvel streaming boss Brad Winderbaum previously spoke at D23 about Riri, saying she certainly won’t be a perfect hero.

“What makes her interesting is that she’s not perfect, right?” Winderbaum said. “She makes mistakes. And she makes some mistakes at the beginning of this story that she has got to solve by the end of the series.”

In a cast interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dominique Thorne confirmed that Ironheart will go to her hometown of Chicago. “We’re taking it back to her hometown of Chicago, and a bit of a battle ensues as she’s debating between or considering how she wants to use what she realizes is a powerful wealth of knowledge, realizing just how much genius she has in her, deciding what she’s going to do with that,” said Thorne. “We see that play out in the environment when she gets back home as well — she has these options. Who and how am I going to use these things that I now know about myself?”

Here’s everything you need to know about Ironheart

The series title is Marvel Studios’ Ironheart

Ironheart‘s Plot

Ironheart will focus on Riri Williams, a brilliant Black girl inventor who creates a high-tech metal suit like Iron Man’s. As we discover in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Riri is a 19-year-old MIT student who is “running” a homework business. Oh, and she also builds a vibranium detection machine that puts her in the path of Namor, the leader of a underwater nation who is willing to kill her to protect his people. Of course, she’s alive and well at the end of the film and heading back to Massachusetts… for now. Right now, there are no solid details about the show. But it is possible that the show will bounce between her native Chicago and MIT, where MJ and Ned also happen to be.

An official synopsis shares:

Set after the events of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” Marvel Television’s “Ironheart” pits technology against magic when Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne)—a young, genius inventor determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins aka “The Hood” (Anthony Ramos).

Behind the Scenes

Playwright, poet, and Snowpiercer writer Chinaka Hodge will lead the show’s writing team as a head writer. According to Deadline, Sam Bailey and Angela Barnes will direct the series. In addition, Proximity, Ryan Coogler’s production company, will serve as one of the show’s producers. Coogler is also onboard the series as an executive producer alongside Kevin Feige. Ironheart finished filming in November 2022.

Dominique Thorne will take on the leading role of Riri “Ironheart” Williams in the MCU. She will be joined by Anthony Ramos of Hamilton and In the Heights fame, who will play The Hood. This Is Us mainstay Lyric Ross will portray Riri’s best friend. In the comics, Riri’s BFF Natalie died way before she became an iron hero but lived on through N.A.T.A.L.I.E. This AI program takes her friend’s form and they work together much like Stark and J.A.R.V.I.S. did. It remains to be seen if this friend will be alive, appear in flashbacks, or operate as AI in the series. Or, perhaps it is not Natalie at all but rather a new character.

Other cast members include Manny Montana, Alden Ehrenreich, Zoe Terakes, Shakira Barrera, Jim Rash, Shea Couleé, Regan Aliyah, Rashida “Sheedz” Olayiwola, Sonia Denis, Paul Calderón, and Cree Summer.

A new Marvel filing with the U.S. Copyright Office Public Records System also reveals that Sacha Baron Cohen will appear in Ironheart as “Mystery Man.” Very mysterious indeed.

Here’s Your First Look at All of Marvel’s Upcoming Animated Series and WHAT IF…? Season Three

Marvel is bringing a few new awesome animated series to Disney+ in 2025 as well as another round of a popular one. And, thanks to a new video from Marvel Studios, we are getting our first look at all of these shows as well as solid release dates (and windows).

First up is What If…? season three, which is coming to Disney+ just in time for Christmas 2024 on December 22. It’s always nice to have something to check out during those final days of the year when you forget what day of the week it is.

Next is Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which explores Peter Parker’s origin story in an alternate reality where Norman Osborn becomes his mentor. This series looks so, so good and will come out on January 24, 2025 to kick off the new year right.

Then, there’s a series that I have been waiting for: Eyes of Wakanda. It will tell the story of several Wakanda warriors who traversed the Earth to find Vibranium. Eyes of Wakanda is produced by Ryan Coogler’s Proximity Media, so you know it is going to be great. That animated Marvel series will hit Disney+ on August 6.

The final animated series is Marvel Zombies, which is based on the comic book of the same name. It continues the reality established in the first episode of What If…? and seems like a good time. That show doesn’t have a firm date yet but it is coming in October 2025, which is very fitting.

First WONDER MAN Footage Shows Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Humorous Journey

It seems that Marvel Television will continue to have more fun after Agatha All Along. While the studios’ 2025 TV slate includes gritter offerings like Daredevil: Born Again, there will also be more comedic shows like Wonder Man starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. The series will center on Simon Williams, a stuntman and actor who lands a role as Wonder Man before gaining superpowers to actually become a hero. Along with several other shows, we got our first official teaser clip for Wonder Man and it looks like a good time.

We see Simon enter a room with an unimpressed panel as he says he is reading for the role of the titular character. He nabs it and says he was born to play this character as he rides through the set. Simon quickly gets into hijinks with his agent Neal, who warns him not to mess up this role. It remains to be seen how he goes from ordinary actor to extraordinary hero, but a teaser is not meant to tell you too much of the story. Also, I have to say that I am looking forward to seeing Yahya in a super suit for many, many reasons.

What Is the Release Date for Wonder Man on Disney+

Wonder Man will hit streaming in December 2025. In the meantime, check out his comic book history to prep for this series.

The History and 30 Year Legacy of INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE

Interview with the Vampire, the big-screen adaptation of Anne Rice’s celebrated first novel, turns 30 this year. The film starred Tom Cruise as the Vampire Lestat, and Brad Pitt as his undead eighteenth-century companion Louis, and introduced the world to a young Kirsten Dunst as the eternal child vampire Claudia. Despite Rice’s novel being one of the most important vampire books of all time, it took nearly two decades for the transition from book to screen. So just what the heck took so long? Here, we unpack just why it took 18 years for one of the most successful fantasy/horror books of the past century to make it to cinemas. We also unpack the truly wild behind-the-scenes drama that went into making this now-iconic vampire film, whose success led to the current AMC series of the same name.

Kirsten Dunst, Brad Pitt, and Tom Cruise in 1994's Interview with the Vampire. Warner Bros. Danny Zuko as the Interviewer? Mr. Spock as Lestat?

Upon the novel’s release in 1976, Paramount immediately optioned the rights to it. Apparently, they intended this as a star vehicle for John Travolta, amid his Saturday Night Fever/Grease supremacy. But the part they wanted Travolta to play wasn’t that of a vampire. Instead, he would have played the novel’s nameless interviewer, who would have had an expanded role. At the same time, none other than Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy, was lobbying publicly to get the role of Lestat. For unknown reasons, this version never happened. Possibly without Travolta attached, the project languished for years and years in what they call development hell.

The property then changed hands multiple times, but it seems no one would pull the trigger on actually making the movie. All this despite the ’80s being a Renaissance of sorts for vampire films, with movies like Fright Night and The Lost Boys cleaning up at the box office, and films like The Hunger tapping into the same queer themes that Rice’s vampires did on the page. And yet, Interview with the Vampire was not among them. Different script iterations of Interview with the Vampire sat on the shelf, gathering dust.

While no one can say exactly why no studio in the ’80s would attempt to adapt Interview, it’s easy to make an educated guess. The ’80s were a rabidly homophobic time, with said sentiment associated in large part with fear of AIDS, and Interview is a novel with heavy queer subtext. In the book Conversations with Anne Rice, the author, famously a queer ally, recalls how, back in the day, Paramount executive Dawn Steel told her flat out, “This movie is politically impossible to make right now… no one is going to make this movie.” And for a long time, no one did.

Cher Almost Played the Vampire Louis

After years of going nowhere, in an apparent last-ditch effort to get the film made, Rice herself took a crack at the script. She made one major change to the story—the character of Louis was now going to be a woman (still called Louis). In her revised version, Louis was married to a Louisiana plantation owner. When her husband and child died on the journey to America, she assumed his identity and passed herself off as a man as a way of retaining his property. It’s unknown if this version of Louis was merely a woman in disguise as a male, or a genuine trans character.

Cher wearing vampire teeth while on tour. Cher/Warner Bros.

By having a woman play the part, and thus canceling out the homoerotic subtext between Louis and Lestat, the belief was that it would allow the movie to be greenlit. Interestingly, producers envisioned none other than Cher in the role of the gender-bending Louis, which would have certainly been fascinating to watch. Given the fact that in real life Cher doesn’t seem to age, Rice might have been onto something. Even after the film went in a different direction, Cher still retained some involvement. She recorded a song for the film, “Lovers Forever,” which David Geffen ultimately didn’t use. But it turned up on her 2013 album Closer to the Truth, and it’s very clearly a song about Interview. So Cher’s involvement lived on, sort of.

For one reason or the other, that version ultimately didn’t get made either. During the ’80s, Rice continued to write her novels. What was once one book expanded to two more: The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned. These two were instant bestsellers and the series was now referred to as The Vampire Chronicles. The Chronicles were must-read books for every goth-inclined and queer-identifying kid in America, and lots of others too. What was once a single novel with a dedicated cult following was now a mainstream blockbuster series. And thus, Hollywood took more notice.

David Geffen to the Rescue Anne Rice's first three books in her Vampire Chronicles series.Ballantine Books

The Vampire Chronicles rights continued to change hands, going from production company to production company. One of those companies ended up bought by Warner Bros. Realizing that Rice’s books were now a huge cultural phenomenon by the early ’90s, Warners fast-tracked the film’s production. They brought on producer David Geffen—himself an out gay man and a powerful mogul—who was hell bent on doing a book-accurate version of Interview. So he asked Anne Rice herself to write the script once again in 1992. This was after several attempts by other writers had failed in the interceding 15 years.

Rice agreed and wrote a script that came in at a whopping 181 pages. She made certain changes to her own novel’s narrative. For starters, Louis was now a grieving widower instead of a man mourning his lost brother. Characters like Lestat’s human father, and plantation owner Babette Freniere were excised out of the story. However, Rice also included many references and characters from her second novel, The Vampire Lestat. (For fans who want to see what that version of the script looks like, you can read it here.)

Tom Cruise as Lestat in Interview with the Vampire.Warner Bros.

Director Neil Jordan came on board after his success with The Crying Game, a film that dealt with LGBTQ issues and found mainstream success. As soon as he did, he cut almost all the references to the other novels from the script. This was probably just so the movie could come in at a two-hour runtime. In the ’90s, two-and-a-half or three-hour blockbuster movies were not common, and that had to be on the studio’s mind when making this picture. Nevertheless, the subtitle of Interview with the Vampire was still The Vampire Chronicles, meaning that Warner Bros. had to be thinking ahead at least somewhat that this could be a franchise. They scheduled cameras to roll in the fall of 1993, for a fall 1994 release.

All the Bloody Drama: Anne Rice Speaks Out Against Tom Cruise’s Casting

Everything finally seemed to be going smoothly for this long-awaited production. And then the casting began. For the part of Louis, Jordan cast then-up-and-coming “It Boy” Brad Pitt. For Lestat, Jordan enlisted the world’s biggest movie star, Tom Cruise. Fans of the books flat-out revolted at the Cruise casting. For a little historical perspective as to why, at the time of his casting, Tom Cruise was THE All-American guy archetype. Between Top Gun and A Few Good Men, no one saw him as anything but that kind of character. Sure, he’d already received critical acclaim for movies like Born on the Fourth of July, but not a single person saw him as the tall, blonde erudite French vampire. It seemed like a casting decision made in hell.

Tom Cruise and Kirsten Dunst in Interview with the Vampire.Warner Bros.

To say author Anne Rice was upset over the casting of Cruise is underselling it. Aside from Stephen King with Kubrick’s The Shining, this is one of few instances of famous authors hating on an adaptation before the film ever came out. Every interview Rice did in 1993-1994 had her bad-mouthing the casting. Whether it was movie magazines or tabloid TV news, Rice made her displeasure known. The media went into a frenzy as Rice spoke her mind to the press without studio approval. That’s the ultimate no-no from Hollywood’s perspective. All of this threatened to derail the film once again. But with a $60 million dollar investment, the studio simply had to move forward and hope for the best. Production began in New Orleans in 1993, under a cloud of bad press. This is the kind of drama that the internet would have a field day with today.

Losing River Phoenix

We should also mention that the production was struck by tragedy early on. Actor River Phoenix was cast early on as the human interviewer, Daniel Molloy. Sadly, a week before the shooting was to commence, Phoenix died of a drug overdose on Halloween, 1993. Christian Slater replaced him at the last minute, donating his entire salary to River Phoenix’s favorite charity. Director Neil Jordan ultimately dedicated the film to Phoenix’s memory.

River Phoenix in Gus Van Sant's My Own Private Idaho (1991)/New Line Cinema

In an unusual show of faith in the project, producer David Geffen sent Rice a tape of the film in advance. He hoped she’d change her mind when she saw the film. By her own admission, Rice watched the film, and started sobbing with relief when she finished it. She realized the filmmakers had done justice to her story. Rice decided to counter all her earlier bad press by doing the opposite. She took out a two-page ad in Variety praising the film, in particular, Tom Cruise. She said “I like to believe Tom’s Lestat will be remembered the way Olivier’s Hamlet is remembered. Others may play the role some day but no one will ever forget Tom’s version of it.” After the film’s release, Rice took out another 8-page ad gushing even more. But even with Rice now on board, more controversy was to come.

The Oprah Winfrey Controversy(L) Tom Cruise as Lestat (R) Oprah Winfrey Warner Bros./Harpo Productions

In the ‘90s, the most powerful promotional tool for your film was a dedicated hour on The Oprah Winfrey Show. It was common for a major blockbuster film to get a promotional push on her show, especially if it involved a major star. It was usually a love fest. It didn’t matter if the movie was bad or good. Well, when Tom Cruise appeared on Oprah’s show to promote Interview in October 1994, it…was not a love fest. Ten minutes into the film, Oprah and several attendees walked out of the screening, disturbed by what they’d seen.

What’s interesting is that Oprah walked out after only ten minutes. There are indeed disturbing moments of vampires feeding on plantation slaves in the film. One brutal scene in particular showed Brad Pitt killing a terrified Thandie Newton in an early role for her. That right there is a legitimate reason for Oprah to not want to sit through the whole movie. However, none of that happens in the first ten minutes of the film. So we think just Tom Cruise biting Brad Pitt was enough to freak out the talk show queen.

Tom Cruise takes a victim in Interview with the Vampire.Warner Bros.

Ultimately, Oprah gave Cruise the option to cancel the show, but to his credit, he pressed forward. The next hour of the show is a wild time capsule of where we were as a culture at the time. Angry suburban women in the audience were furious with the megastar for making something “so demonic.” Meanwhile, the audience (and Oprah) snickered at a gay audience member for commenting on the story’s (very obvious) homoerotic subtext. It’s wild to see just how over the heads of the audience that all was at the time. In the end, none of that hurt the final film. It just created more hype for it.

Interview with the Vampire’s Continuing Eternal LifeInterview with the Vampire's opening title credits.Warner Bros.

The film opened on November 11, 1994, to decent reviews and fantastic box office. And none of the previous year’s worth of controversy seemed to have made a dent in its prospects. It made $105 million domestically in ’94, which is around $277 million in inflation-adjusted numbers today. Not bad for an R-Rated horror period piece with queer subtext. But despite its success, a proper sequel never saw the light of day. Rice and the producers had made peace, and the movie made money. So what happened?

Daniel Molloy (River Phoenix) interviews the vampire Louis (Brad Pitt) in Interview with the Vampire.Warner Bros.

Basically, Hollywood produced movies based on existing franchises very differently in the ’90s. No one thought to sign actors for more than one movie at a time back then. Meaning that if they greenlit a sequel, the original star wasn’t guaranteed to return. It wasn’t really until Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and the X-Men movies in the early 2000s that studios started to think ahead to potential sequels well in advance. Without Cruise guaranteed as Lestat, the adaptation Neil Jordan was planning for The Vampire Lestat died on the vine.

Another factor was probably that the follow-up novels are very dense, and come with multiple points of view from different characters. Those books would be far more difficult to make into a two-hour movie. When attempting to combine books two and three into the movie The Queen of the Damned eight years later, the result was cheap and sloppy, despite the late Aaliyah looking fierce throughout as Queen Akasha. None of the original actors came back; the film was essentially made just so the studio could keep a hold of the copyright. The resulting film left no one happy. And it effectively killed this franchise for the next two decades.

Interview with the Vampire Rises from the GraveInterview with the Vampire's undead family, AMCAMC Networks

After Queen of the Damned tanked at the box office, there was a Lestat musical by Elton John. But that was also a flop. The vampire craze of the late 2000s, begun with Twilight and True Blood, seemingly had no room for Rice’s vampires. This is despite Interview with the Vampire being an obvious influence on them all. After many failed attempts at getting a TV series going, Anne Rice sold the rights to her entire Vampire Chronicles series to AMC. In 2022, just months after Rice’s passing, Interview with the Vampire the series debuted to much critical acclaim, and a rabid fandom was born. But there’s a reason the series is called Interview with the Vampire, despite moving on from that novel’s story for season three. And that reason is the incredible brand recognition the film brought to the title 30 years ago. Its undead legacy truly lives on.

Megan Thee Stallion Goes Cosmic for Halloween as Starfire of the Teen Titans

Megan Thee Stallion isn’t just a musical icon and a fierce performer, she also slays the house down every Halloween. Over the years she’s dressed up as characters from My Hero Academia, and even as one of the Gremlins. And this year is no different when it comes to Megan going nerdy for spooky season. For Halloween 2024, Megan released images of herself dressed as Starfire, the legendary Teen Titan from DC Comics. You can check out images of Starfire Thee Stallion, the alien princess of Tamaran, right here:

Now, some of you who grew up with the animated Teen Titans cartoon, or even Teen Titans Go!, might be looking at these photos and not recognizing the character much. And we wouldn’t blame you. In the cartoons, they usually portray Princess Koriand’r of Tamaran very differently. She looks far younger, and far less sexy-fied. But in her original DC Comics incarnation, Starfire looked quite different. As designed by the late, great comic book artist George Perez in 1980 for The New Teen Titans, his Kory had huge curly hair, that would trail off into fire when she flew. She also showed way more skin in her original design.

All this time, we thought Megan was mostly a Marvel girl since she was on She-Hulk. We have to admit, we love all the love so many celebrities have for old-school comic book costumes at Halloween. Remember when Keke Palmer was the X-Men’s Rogue for Halloween? And now we have Megan as Starfire from DC’s biggest rival to the X-Men, the Teen Titans. DC Studios is planning a Teen Titans movie in the near future. They could do far worse than having Megan Thee Stallion as the team’s fiery alien warrior princess. If James Gunn casts Megan as Starfire, we have to say, whoever plays Nightwing is one lucky man.

AGATHA ALL ALONG’s Tarot Card Meanings Were Mostly Accurate

Agatha All Along leaned fully into the artform of tarot in its seventh episode. The trial focused heavily on Lilia’s powers of divination as the crew had to place the correct tarot cards in the proper order, lest they wanted to be impaled by falling swords. The usage of swords itself is a direct nod to tarot, as there is a suit of swords in the Minor Arcana that represent everything from decisive decision-making to a dangerous journey. And the Witches Road has indeed been a treacherous path that has claimed lives and revealed epic secrets. Agatha All Along gives fans a crash course in tarot card reading/interpretation, but are the meanings given in this story actually accurate? For the most part, they do line up with standard interpretations.

Patti Lupone's Lilia dressed as Glinda the Good Watch falling on Agatha All AlongMarvel Studios

After Teen a.k.a. Billy Maximoff a.k.a. Wiccan asks the question of who he really is (which makes him the querent, or a person seeking answers from divination), Lilia prepares to do a “Safe Passage” spread for him to place seven cards in several designated spots. The first card represents the Traveler themself, the second card is What’s Missing (the meaning of a quest), the third one is the Path Behind (wounds suffered and lessons learned), the fourth is the Path Ahead (a space for growth and discovery), fifth is Obstacles (which inevitably happen before a Windfall). Finally, the Traveler must overcome all to reach the ultimate Destination.

Teen begins to draw the cards and Lilia gives us an interpretation of each one, which initially doesn’t go well until she figures out what she really needs to do. So let’s break down what happens with each tarot card in Agatha All Along, its interpretation, and if that meaning makes sense according to IRL tarot. (Note: Most of these interpretations are going to be in high vibe/straightforward meaning instead of a reversed/low vibe meaning.)

The Magician (Initially Chosen for Teen as the Traveler)photo of the magician tarot card meaning interpretation in agatha all alongMarvel Studios

Of course, Teen draws the Magician first. At first, Lilia says this card represents him, a person with enormous potential and the ability to turn all of his goals into reality. She puts it in the first spot and a sword falls, indicating that it is not the right choice for this spread. However, Lilia’s interpretation of what this tarot card means in Agatha All Along is indeed correct. The Magician card is about having the innate ability, creativity, and potential to manifest your goals and deepest desires. The querent should focus on making the most of opportunities and crafting their own destiny.

The Sun (Initially Chosen for Teen’s What’s Missing Card)Patti Lupone's Lilia dressed as Glinda the Good Watch on Agatha All AlongMarvel Studios

The next card he chooses is the Sun. Lilia interprets this as good fortune, joy, and reunion, the latter of which sparks particular interest for a young soul who wants to see his twin again. But another sword falls again to the chagrin of everyone. In its straightforward interpretation, the Sun does indeed represent joy and optimism. The querent can know that good things are coming their way or are already here!

After pulling the first two cards for the wrong person, Lilia realizes that she is the Traveler and, just like her experience of her life, things are out of order. This is when everything starts to fall into place with more tarot cards and interpretations.

The Queen of Cups (Accurate Choice for Lilia as The Traveler)queen of cups agatha all along card in lilia's handMarvel Studios

Lilia is indeed the Queen of Cups, a person who is empathetic and intuitive who’s inner voice is trustworthy. She could see the dangers lying ahead for Teen and that’s why she placed the sigil on him. This interpretation of this card is indeed correct. The Queen of Cups represents psychic and motherlike energy and encourages the querent to draw close to someone with that energy or use their own energy to be a supportive space to those around them while being careful to not become overwhelmed due to their empathetic nature. Lilia does what mothers often do as she sacrifices herself to ensure others safety.

Three of Pentacles (Accurate Choice for Lilia’s What’s Missing Card) queen of cups agatha all along card tarot card meaning and interpretationMarvel Studios

Lilia then pulls the Three of Pentacles and goes back to seeing a very similar symbol on an eviction notice with the rest of the coven’s names on it. (What a clever tidbit!) Collaboration, community, and singular voices waiting to harmonize is the interpretation she gives us and literally the crux of this series. The Witches’ Road coven literally sang multiple versions of a song and spoke incantations along the way. Lilia needed her coven. The artwork for pretty much every Three of Pentacles card shows people with various skill sets coming together to achieve a common goal. One, if not more, of the figures often represent an apprentice, which is what Teen initially seemed to be for Agatha. It is all about bringing your energy and talents together with others to bring something to completion.

The Knight of Wands (Accurate Choice for Lilia’s The Path Behind Card) AGATHA ALL ALONG's Tarot Card Meanings Were Mostly Accurate_1Marvel Studios

The Knight of Wands tarot card in Agatha All Along is a representation of Alice, who was full of fire and fought bravely, giving her life to save Agatha. This card indeed represents all the tenets one would associate with a knight. It’s a signal to be valiant, to explore, and to lean into uncharted waters with a curious and bold spirit.

The High Priestess (Accurate Choice for Lilia’s The Path Ahead Card) the high priestess card tarot meaning agatha all alongMarvel Studios

The High Priestess represents Jen, someone who has a lot of spiritual power and is either unable or unwilling to use it. Oh, how we cannot wait for Jen to fully break the bonds that suppress her full abilities. The High Priestess card asks the querent to identify and use their gifts to fully tap into their inner power and witchiness. It is a card that is representative of intuition and psychic connection, which could be giving us more of a hint about Jen’s full capabilities. Like the regal title suggests, the High Priestess is quite wise and regal.

Three of Swords (Accurate Choice for Lilia’s Obstacles Card) AGATHA ALL ALONG's Tarot Card Meanings Were Mostly Accurate_2Marvel Studios

Lilia gives us three words for this card interpretation: heartbreak, sorrow, and grief. We see that in this instance, it is indeed Agatha, who carries much guilt and sadness over her past. The Three of Swords is a heavy card indeed that signifies a recent or ongoing era of sadness or mourning. However, pulling this card is often a signal that there’s a possible light at the end of the tunnel as a dark night of the soul moment’s fog begins to lift. It is time to release, seek forgiveness, heal, and recover, all things that Agatha and the others must do if they want to truly gain what they need from this journey.

The Tower Reversed (Accurate Choice for Lilia’s Windfall Card) tower reversed in agatha all along tarot card meaning and interpretationMarvel Studios

This is the one and only card that is not meant to be read straightforward; however, Lilia is kind enough to give us both interpretations despite time running short. In its straightforward meaning, the Tower can mean disaster and destruction but when it is reversed, it means miraculous transformation, according to her. And she is once again correct in both instances, even flipping the Tower card upright again to defeat the Salem Seven and fall to her death.

Death (Laid Crossways Against Windfall for the Destination Card) death card in agatha all along on a tableMarvel Studios

Ahh, so this is the one that is tricky. Lilia realizes that Rio is Death. The show’s interpretation of the Death card based on Lilia’s ending and Rio’s persona so far takes death literally, suggesting that the roads lead to an actual demise. This surface level thought of Death makes this tarot card one of the most feared in the deck when it shouldn’t be. The Death card is often about the death of ego or a death of your former self that’s needed to be reborn into something greater. The weeds and brush that clutter your path need to be cleared in order to step boldly into a new life and find transformation. It’s a sign for a querent to not continue to cling to the past or stay trapped in an unhealthy cycle that doesn’t allow for growth.

In the end, the coven moves on and Lilia accepts her fate of falling to her death. Hate to see it. Hopefully this episode will spark more curiosity about tarot cards and get more fans into this complex yet fun practice. There’s even an Agatha All Along tarot deck that’s coming our way soon! Until then, we will continue down the Witches Road towards the finale.
