I make the following statement on one of my Bio-pages:

“The reader is more important than the writer; but, books should never be written just for the reader—authentic writing is a must; yet, without the reader, the writing is unfruitful…”

I saw the following quote fromRoberto Bolaño in an article calledGood Readers Are Rarer than Good Writers in The Irish Times:

“Reading is more important than writing.”

“How to Become a Writer”

I put the title of this post in quotes because I needed some way to indicate that I was not going to be giving you the End-All-Be-All method for becoming a writer.

How to Become a Writer

Though, actually, if I give in to the urge to generalize, all you have to do to become a writer is to read as many good writers as you can while also writing until it stops sounding like crap

I should add that “read as many good writers as you can” does not me...

Why is the Authors Guild so Mad at Google Books?

I’ve written before about the Authors Guild of the U.S.A.—rather critical articlesseems they’re organized more to favor the legacy publishers than the authors

The Guild’s latest outrage is directed against Google Books.

Recently, a federal appeals court ruled that Google’s scanning of “snippets” from books, to present in their search results, was legally “fair use”.

Yet, according to an article in Con...

Just in case you don’t know what an MFA is, it’s a Master of Fine Arts degree and, according to one source, it can cost $US 13,800 in a public institution or $US 36,300 at a private school.

I want to introduce the idea of doing the work for an MFA without paying for it; but, I should share a bit about a lesser goal first—the bare beginnings of learning how to write.

If you scroll down the left side-bar, yo...
