Moonshadow Paperback Pre-Orders

Dear Readers-

First, the important stuff: the print version of Moonshadow will be available on Dec. 13! Even better, I convinced Amazon to give me a pre-order for the print version!

As many of you know, I decided to self-publish when Berkley and I failed to reach a contractual agreement after Shadow’s End. There are lots of things I love about self-publishing—I can give readers a wide variety of stories that are as long or short as the story needs. Having creative control over the cover design has meant I can produce better, higher quality covers. (I adore the amazing job Gene Mollica did on Moonshadow!) There is a faster turnaround time from when I finish writing and the book is in your hands, and there is great flexibility in e-book prices. These are all great things!

Self-publishing doesn’t do quite as well in print books. Traditional publishing has a huge infrastructure in place that allows them to print thousands of copies at once, and then store them in big warehouses. That lowers the cost of printing by quite a bit. Self-publishing doesn’t have this option. Unfortunately, it costs more to print this way, and I’m not in control of that pricing. Add in a long book (the print file for Moonshadow is 498 pages) and the cost goes up.

The print versions are priced as low as I can get them, but are trade paperback pricing instead of the previous mass market pricing. If the sticker shock is too much, I suggest either asking your library to carry it, or getting an e-version. You don’t need an e-reader to read ebooks—now you can read on your computer, tablet, and phone with a free app.

While the majority of my sales are e-books, I know there are many readers who prefer a physical book. I am trying to make my books accessible to everyone in whatever form they prefer. To that end, I have two different print versions, although as a reader you shouldn’t be able to tell the difference.

The first one is through Ingram, who is a wholesaler that serves bookstores and libraries around the world. When you order the print version from Barnes and Noble or a local bookstore, they are getting it from Ingram. Because it is wholesale, I have no control on the final price so I suggest you shop around. If you ask your favorite store to carry it, you can be assured it is available to them.

The other version is CreateSpace, which is sold directly through Amazon. Because there is no middle-man, it can be slightly cheaper, but Amazon limits the distribution area. Between the two print versions, I am confident that no matter where you live that there are options available to you.

You can pre-order the print version of Moonshadow at:

Amazon US  Barnes and Noble  Amazon UK  Amazon CA

I will be updating my website and social media as more links become available. The most recent links can be found here.

However you choose to read it, I hope you enjoy Moonshadow! I loved writing this story and am already hard at work on the sequel—Spellbinder.

Moonshadow News!

Dear Readers-

After careful consideration, I’ve decided to change the series title for Moonshadow. Instead of being Elder Races Book 10, it will be Moonshadow Book 1, with the next stories being Spellbinder (Moonshadow Book 2) and Lionheart (Moonshadow Book 3).

The stories are still set in the Elder Races world and there will be some crossover, but while the original Elder Races stories dealt with the demesnes in the US, the Moonshadow trilogy will be dealing with the demesnes in the UK. It is similar to how Patricia Briggs structures her Alpha and Omega series versus her Mercy Thompson series—same world, but with a different focus.

I’m doing this for several reasons. A big one is for reader clarification. Many readers are under the impression that Moonshadow picks up after Shadow’s End and will focus on beloved characters that they already know. Those characters do exist in this world—and some will be making an appearance in the upcoming three stories—but the Moonshadow trilogy will focus on the UK demesnes and will not require knowledge of the previous Elder Races books.

As for the original Elder Races stories, I’ll definitely be swinging back to the US to tell more of those stories as well!

I’m very excited about exploring this new canvas of the Elder Races world and I hope you enjoy it as well.

Elder Races News!

I’m delighted to share the gorgeous cover for Moonshadow, the new upcoming story in my Elder Races series. I contracted with the talented artist Gene Mollica for the next three Elder Races covers, and I think they are the strongest in the series—full of vibrant color, dynamic backgrounds that spark the imagination, and sexy heroes. We were lucky to nab talented model Paul Marron for Moonshadow as well, which brings even more awesomeness to this particular piece of art!

Moonshadow, book ten in the Elder Races series, kicks off an all new three-story arc that concentrates mainly on new characters in the U.K. but also pulls in familiar characters from earlier stories.

It’s exciting to focus on a strong, new story line, which I’ve been building to for a while. Hints and foresahdowing of the upcoming trilogy can be seen in Shadow’s End (book nine), and also in the novella Pia Does Hollywood and even back as far as the events that take place in Pia Saves the Day. The reader will get to fall in love with new characters while learning more about characters they’ve already come to know.

Moonshadow will be followed by Spellbinder (book eleven) and Lionheart (book twelve). The three stories follow the classic Elder Races format chronicling ancient, ongoing conflicts told in modern settings while focusing on passionate love stories between strong heroes and heroines.

Along with the cover reveal for Moonshadow, here’s the story blurb:

From bestselling author Thea Harrison comes the first in an explosive new trilogy in the Elder Races series.

Her past is a blank, her future uncertain….

Recovering from a shooting, LAPD witch consultant Sophie Ross leaves her job and travels to the U.K. to search for answers about her childhood. When she encounters a Daoine Sidhe knight of the Dark Court, she becomes entangled in an ancient hatred between two arcane forces.

He has given his body and soul to fight for his people….

Barred from his homeland along with his surviving brother knights, Nikolas Sevigny is embroiled in a conflict that threatens everything he holds dear. Only by uniting his people’s resources can they hope to prevail against Isabeau, the deadly Queen of the Light Court. He will do anything and use anyone to return home to Lyonesse.

When Nikolas encounters Sophie, he sees a tool to be used. The insouciant witch might be the key to unlocking every passageway that has been barred to the knights of the Dark Court, even as a fascination for her takes root in what’s left of his soul.

Sophie has no intention of becoming anyone’s pawn, yet the fierce Nikolas is so compelling, she can’t deny the temptation that endangers her guarded heart.

As magic threatens Lyonesse, Queen Isabeau unleashes her merciless Hounds, and Nikolas and Sophie become embroiled in a race for survival. Meanwhile, the passion that ignites between them burns too hot to be denied and quickly turns into obsession.

Thank goodness they both know better than to fall in love…

Pre-Orders are available now for Kindle, Kindle UK, Nook, and Kobo.  iBooks and Print will be appearing closer to the release date of December 13.

Publishing News

Regretfully, Thea will be pulling her self-published books off Google Play in the next few days.  While traditional publishers set prices for ebooks that online retailers honor, Google Play is not allowing self-published authors the same courtesy.  Instead, Google Play likes to run ‘promotions’ and slash prices without notifying the author and without an author’s permission.

While everyone loves a sale – especially book lovers – the problem is that Amazon, who owns the majority of the ebook market share, works their computer magic and adjusts their prices to match the lowest price they can find. And because authors have no control over Google Play’s pricing, the results can be catastrophic.  If you are an established author with a new book on pre-order, the first royalty check after release can often be the bulk of your sales. Since there are no advances in self-publishing and books take several months to produce, that royalty check has to stretch and cover both living expenses as well as production costs for the next book.  Editors, cover artists, formatters – they all need to be paid before a book ever hits the virtual store shelves. If Google Play slashes the book price by 50%, Amazon slashes their price by 50%.  Since an author’s royalty rate is a percentage of the book price, suddenly their royalty paycheck – money that they need to live on – takes a huge unexpected hit.

Promotions are great, but authors need to be in control of when and how those promotions occur.  While Thea tries to make her books as widely available as possible, she has to protect her livelihood, especially since Google Play has made it clear they will not stop this practice. You can still find her self-published work on multiple other distribution channels. Thank you for your understanding.
