Writing Workshops

Interested in writing your own novel?  Thea is a member of the Colorado Romance Writers, a chapter of RWA, and they offer all sorts of fantastic online workshops.  Here’s a preview of some of their upcoming events:

In October, CRW takes the fear out of putting words on paper, or rather words on screen! Work with MM Pollard to action up passive voice, with Becky Martinez to realize your story ideas into novels, and with Susan Palmquist to experiment with crafting short stories.

Do you write sentences with the doer of the action in a prepositional phrase like in this sentence?

– Bonnie was asked to the dance by Frank.

That sentence is written in passive voice. Confused? You’re not the only writer who struggles with passive voice verbs. Spend a month with MM and learn how to action up your writing!

Write in Passive Voice and Be Passed Over by a Publisher

Instructor: MM Pollard

Dates: Monday, October 5 – October 30, 2015 (4 weeks)

Fee: $20.00 CRW Members; $25.00 all other students

Classifications: Writing Fundamentals, Wordsmithing, Voice, Grammar, Craft, Active vs. Passive

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Learn to move your initial story idea to developing great characters, creating a realistic setting, and building a plot that moves. Using checklists and exercises Becky will teach you to get your story idea off the ground.
Power Writing – From Ideas to Plots to Pages
Instructor: Becky Martinez
Dates: October 5 – October 16, 2015 (2 weeks)
Fee: $15.00 CRW/HODRW Members; $20.00 all other students
Classifications: Writing Fundamentals, Craft, Plotting, Characterization, Setting, Dialogue, Scenes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Short is hot! It has been for a while now, and it shows no signs of slowing down. So just what is the key for writing short? Spend the month with Susan Palmquist and discover the winning formula for penning successful short stories.

ELDER RACES NEWS

I’m delighted to announce that I’ve committed to writing another three full-length novels in the Elder Races. I’ve developed a new story arc that I’m really excited about, and I can’t wait to share it with readers!

Unfortunately, I was unable to make a contractual match with my publisher Berkley. After deliberating long and hard, I’ve decided that it’s time for me to strike out and self-publish the upcoming new stories.

For the time being, what this means is:

The books will continue to be available through multiple e-book venues.

There will be both print and audiobook versions.

I have a continued commitment to getting my books into as many foreign translations as possible, either on my own or via a publisher.

They’ll continue to be available in libraries. I’ve worked out an agreement with the Nelson Literary Agency to achieve distribution to libraries. (Yay!)

For now, they will NOT be on the shelves in bookstores. Readers will need to buy them online. (While this may certainly change, it is the current reality.)

The really good news is:

I’ll be able to move much more quickly and put out stories in a much more flexible manner than a traditional publisher can. This means I can release more often and tell stories that didn’t fit well within contractual word limits. I’ll also be more involved in creating eye-catching cover art, which is a personal favorite of mine.

Thank you:

I want to thank my former agent Amy Boggs at the Donald Maass Literary Agency for everything she has done on my behalf. Amy is everything kind and literate, and I’m grateful for our tenure together.

I also want to thank my former editor Cindy Hwang, and the entire Berkley team, for the great collaboration we enjoyed publishing eleven titles together over the last six years. It’s been a pleasure and an honor to work with them, and I wish them all the best.

Moving forward:

So, that’s the business side of things! For now, as an author, I have gone completely Indie.

This does not mean that I believe traditional publishers are bad, and if the right kind of business deal from a traditional publisher came my way, I would certainly consider signing with a traditional publisher again.

This simply means that I’ve reached a stage where being an Indie author – for now – meets my current business and creative needs, and I believe it will be better for my readers.

More good stuff!

I’ll be releasing more information on the upcoming Elder Races stories in the new future, but for now I’ll let you know that I’ll be taking the new story arc across the big puddle to England. The set up for the new direction is in book #9, SHADOW’S END, which releases on December 1st.

Readers will get to fall in love with new characters, keep in touch with old ones, and discover just how much more there is to the Elder Races universe with a much wider story canvass. There will be more world-building, history, magic, and adversaries.

I’m also excited to explore more novellas in the Elder Races, for those storylines that are too delicious not to write yet don’t warrant their own full-length book.

And as an added aside, I’m also hard at work developing a sexy contemporary romantic suspense series. I’m thrilled with this new series concept. New ideas are continually popping up in my head, and I can’t wait to share the stories with readers!

2016 is going to be very exciting!

Dragos Goes to Washington blurb!

The blurb for Dragos Goes to Washington has been released!

Dragos Cuelebre, Lord of the Wyr, needs to throw a party without maiming anyone. That isn’t exactly as easy as it might sound.

After the destructive events of the last eighteen months, the Elder Races are heading to Washington D.C. to foster peace with humankind. Not known for his diplomacy skills, Dragos must rely on his mate Pia to help navigate a battlefield of words and polite smiles rather than claws. With Dragos’s mating instinct riding close to the surface, his temper is more volatile than ever and the threat of violence hovers in the air.

Then the human spouse of a prominent politician winds up murdered and Dragos and Pia must race against time to hunt down those behind it before they are held responsible for the crime.

For fans of DRAGON BOUND and LORD’S FALL, the latest novella in the Elder Races holds passion, peril, political intrigue, and revelations that will change Dragos and Pia’s lives forever.

Dragos Goes to Washington is the first part of a three-story series about Dragos, Pia, and their son Liam. Each story stands alone, but fans might want to read all three in order as they will be released: Dragos Goes to Washington, Pia Does Hollywood, and Liam Takes Manhattan.

Expected Release Date: September 2015
