I Needed Humor
“Let me tell you right now the one thing you’ll ever need to know: Own things. And let the things you own own other things. Then you’ll own yourself and other people, too.” --Toni Morrison, in her book SONG OF SOLOMON The Kosovo War was ongoing with NATO intensifying its airstrikes against Yugoslavia to halt the humanitarian crisis and ethnic cleansing in Kosovo. President Clinton announced a NATO summit to be held in Washington DC next month (April 1999) to commemorate NATO’s 50th Anniversary.
I needed humor. It was nice to receive a funny card from Marie-Antoinette: “I don’t understand today’s movies—all that violence and swearing... and inside the card the punch line: ...And that’s just in the concession line.” Ha-ha
March 19, 1999 Dearest Cousin Michael,
Was sitting here thinking about you; thought I’d put a little smile on your face while I was at it!
Don’t work too hard. You've got to enjoy the fruits of your labor once in a while!
Take Care and God Bless!
Love Ya,
Your cousin,

I hadn’t heard from that San Francisco teacher, Pat Crowley, in a while. I was also trying to encourage more whisper talk about Verona Capital, of course. I had been a part time teaching participant to her 4th & 5th grade class at Redding School in San Francisco to inspire them to write. I never forgot those days, so I sent her a postcard and she miraculously wrote back.
March 20, 1999
Hi Michael,
Thank you for your recent postcard. It’s great that you own your own business. What type of business is it? I had your address, but I thought you might have moved, so I haven’t corresponded. I am still working in the field of education, but I am no longer teaching at Redding School. I left the school last Spring. I am a mentor teacher employed by the SF Unified School District in the Teaching Internship Credential Program. With the shortage of teachers, due to the reduction in class size for grades K-3, the district and SF State University have worked out a program where graduates with four years of college, have passed the BBEST exam, have been interviewed and are qualified to participate, are placed in teaching positions in S.F. They take their education classes concurrently with teaching in the classroom and have emergency credentials. It is a two-year program. The prospective teachers take 37 units during the internship period. They are supported by experienced teachers like me who help them with curriculum, management, and organization, along with a supervising teacher from S.F State University who evaluated selected lessons they have to present. First year interns receive 16 visits from the mentor teacher, while the second-year teacher receives eight visits.
They also receive a salary from the school district while they are learning. I have also given workshops for new substitute teacher and led a workshop with three Redding teachers at a National Institute held in San Jose integrating visual art into the science curriculum. I also facilitated a visit by the institute teachers and administrators to visit Redding School to see selected teachers who have worked with me over the years presenting integrated art lessons across the curriculum to their students. Everything went well. Now, I am preparing for a workshop at Redding School for Parents and volunteers on Writing in the Upper Grades in April.
Summers have been spent in Hawaii, on the East Coast and in Quebec. I’m planning to go to Maui in May.
So, as you can see, I’m still as busy and involved as ever. Keep me posted on what you are doing. Fondly,
Pat
Alan and I met on November 20th, so we like to celebrate the 20th of each month—when we remember to. Alan’s mom gave us a sweet postcard of a Tap Dancer in NYC from 1935 to commemorate this month’s 20th date along with a videocassette:
Happy March 20th Anniversary.
Since this video is a favorite of mine, I thought this can be included in our video night soirees. Happy! Happy!
Love Always,
Mommy & Jack
Former coworker Reed Campbell also sent a postcard that his wife, Deanna, brought from China but he sent it from his home in Minneapolis:
Hi Michael, My wife brought me this card for you on her trip to CHINA. I was there in spirit. It does remind me of San Francisco and the Golden Gate fog.
Best,
Reed

Kill Them with Kindness
“In the end, we’re all animals. We’ve got to get dirty sometime.” --Eric Van Lustbader, THE KAISHO Sadly, my paternal first cousin, Cecelia Garcia-Markus died on February 28, 1999. Mom was very close to her. She would call all of the time. Her mother, Esther, and my dad were half-brother/half-sister as they both had the same mother (Mathilde) but different fathers. Cecelia died of cirrhosis of the liver. I remember when she gifted me a bottle of whisky a couple of Christmas' ago. I was flabbergasted. I don't drink heavy spirits. She just drank too much. I had to send a note to mom as I had been searching for photos of Cecelia. I know I have many. She had the gift of gab, loving to talk about so many relatives in the family. I now wish I spoke to her more--but I did have my fill of conversations with her. I do feel lucky about this.
March 9, 1999
Dear Mom, I was sorting through some old photos trying to find pictures of Cecelia—still looking. However, I found these two that I had to send you because they made me chuckle. You'll get a kick out of it. I’m sure. You must show it to Betty and share the others with Ashley and Lauren, too.
It’s Tuesday morning. Alan and I are going to breakfast to discuss our new Internet Stock Watch List.
My lease for my car expires June 1999. Alan and I are thinking of driving up there to see you.
Hugs and Kisses, Love Your Son,
Michael J Armijo
Sandra Donald, the prisoner cousin wrote to me:
March 9, 1999, Pearl, Mississippi
Dear Cousin,
How are you today?
How is the new business?
Michael, I have finally come to terms with my sentence. My earliest parole eligibility date is 4-15-2000. I just have to continue to be strong and faithful to my higher power, my Lord Jesus Christ. He has brought me this far and so I must lean on Him.
Mr. Stanfield, an attorney, did visit me on October 3, 1998, but as you see I am still here. He’s not trying hard enough to help please me, so I don’t need him...
Photo: Cecelia Garcia-Markus pictured here with son, Patrick, and husband, Jim
I was talking to Elsie, my sister-in-law, yesterday and she informed me that Cecelia had died. I was shocked to hear the bad news but did not get the details as to what happened. Please let me know as soon as possible. I visited her in the Winter of 1970. We were fairly close. Michael, thank you for your sweet and exciting mail. I look forward to hearing from you.
My love and prayers are with you.
Sandra Donald
“Our unknown future is secure in the hands of our all-knowing, God.”
And I like when Marie-Antoinette writes me because my mom likes it when I call her and read aloud what she’s written. For instance:
March 10, 1990
Dearest Michael,
Received your beautiful card from NYC and was so happy to hear from you. Mom would have celebrated her 93rd Birthday today but I’m sure she’s celebrating up above and her new glorious life with Our Lord! I’m doing better. Thanks so much for thinking of me. I’m sorry when I went down to finalize mom’s funeral I wasn’t in a very good state of mind, so i didn’t even think of going to get my diaries. I’ve made a promise to walk to Santuario on Good Friday, so I will then and hopefully find them intact. If I recall correctly it will make for interesting reading.
My mom’s sister (my aunt) and my brother, Gilbert, were still very cold and callous but I pray for them. I thought when mom arrived in Cerrillos after being with me a few years it may have softened their hearts but to no avail.
Angelus Funeral Chapel took care of all the arrangements and even transported mom for us. They were just great and she was handled with such dignity.
I’m sorry I didn’t mean to get carried away but I felt such a closeness to you those few minutes we were at the reunion that I feel I can tell you anything...I hope you don’t mind. The rest of the family is doing good. Ruben’s surgery isn’t until April 9th at around 9:30AM at St. Mary-Corwin Hospital here in Pueblo and three specialists will be assisting. The doctors have reassured us that it's a pretty clear-cut incision. The only problem is that the curated artery in the left side of the neck seems to be surrounding the tumor and kind of attaching itself to it so it might be a little tricky. Say prayer for him, will you every chance you get?
As for my daughter, Bernadette, she teaches English as second language at the Federal Prison in Florence, CO. She deals on a 1 to 1 basis with the inmates. She loves the work and she’s capable of taking care of herself. As a little girl I had her and her brother Joe take karate and other classes in self-defense. Your cousin is about 6 feet tall and weighs about 170-178 pounds, but don’t ever say I told you so! Ha-ha! She’s a great gal! When she was born dad went to see me at the hospital and his exact words were: “She’s you born all over again.” And I tell you, his words were never truer as they were that day! She’s really a chip off the old block! When she was a teenager and tried to pull the wool over my eyes, I’d tell her not to try any tricks because I was the one that had written that book! Chuckle-chuckle.
Photo: In Memory of Cecelia Garcia-Markus, pictured with my mother Virginia M Armijo
On another note, I’m so sorry about your father’s niece, Cecelia. It’s always so hard when it’s a relative especially when there’s a sad ending in this life when it came about by their own doing. I have a few relatives that have turned to alcohol as a way of coping but I think it takes a braver person to face life without any excuses or easy way outs. I sound really holier than thou, huh? My sister, Josie, God Bless her soul would say when I would call to speak to mom, “It’s Mother Theresa!” Dad had quite a good impact on my life and I’ve always tried to live it that way. He did by always loving everything and everybody. If anyone did you harm, he’d say, “Kill them with kindness.” Mom, the little angel always believed you should defend yourself and not be stepped on. She was a very strong lady! I wish I could have been mor like her than I wouldn’t have felt so much pain in my life. Oh well, Cest la vie. Anyway, now that I’ve come to the end of my short novel, I hope you weren’t too bored! I’d better close for now. Love to all the family.
Gold Bless You Favorite Cousin.
I Love You!
Your Cousin, Marie Antoinette
And the week wouldn’t have been complete without the army man, Chris Armijo. His mission for me to find out where "military" play in San Antonio was hysterical. I wonder if the world wide web can help me with that one.
09 MAR 99, Monday
M & A,
Hi guys.
Hope you enjoyed/are enjoying Aruba. As of today, I have met all requirements for Basic Combat Training as set forth by the United States Armed Forces. I am recognized as a soldier now. Hmmm...
Graduation is on Thursday. Words can’t even begin to express how I feel. No more:
Morning wake ups between 0345-0400
MRE’s (Meat Ready to Eat)
Cold mornings on the field
53 guys in one long bay
Confinement to “Starship”
I report to Ft. Sam Houston on Thursday. I should leave directly after graduation. In about two weeks I should start getting weekend passes. Sight out about 1700 on Friday and sign back in Sunday before 2300. Sex and Drink! Celibacy is not for everyone.
Okay, so not much left to report.
Michael, can you do a search for me an find out the “HOT SPOTS” near Ft. Sam Houston? Where do “military” play? Don’t print and send. Write in letter format. They read, glance over all PC printouts. I’ll write next week with my address.
Love, Chris
P.S. How is the business?
...And his email a few days later:
Hello -
Well, I graduated Basic Training and am now in San Antonio. Life has taken a radical turn! We are basically on our own this weekend. I rarely see a drill Sargeant. It is nice! My new address:
PV2 ARMIJO
B Co. 187th Med Bn
Ft. Sam Houston, Texas 78234
I will also be able to check this email as I have free time. Which during the week is from 5PM to 9PM in the evenings!
How are things there?
“This is your first time, isn’t it? He said in my ear. “I can tell. I’ll show you what it’s like. You’ll like it. Just let yourself go, baby.”

A Total Hunk
“When once I knew what people in general would be likely to do, I should know you would do the opposite.” --George Eliot, DANIEL DERONDA Alan and I love the island of Aruba. Alan was there before as a young boy with his parents. I’m glad we went there. We will fly to New York City for a brief spell before returning to Los Angeles. I spotted and visited a restaurant called CHEZ MATHILDE (Mathilde, my paternal grandmother). You can imagine how excited I became. I took one of their postcards and used it to write to mom:
March 3, 1999
Hi Mom,
Aruba has such a beautiful, clear blue beach. There were a lot of “fatties” on the beach. I’m on the plane now headed for New York.
Did you know Mathilde is a French name? Maybe this is a hint of proof about Mathilde’s grandfather being that French soldier. Well, this Mathilde Restaurant was A+ for service, ambiance and food.
Love You,
Michael
Another postcard to mom from the boutique Hotel Plaza Athenee at 17 E 64th St:
March 3, 1999 Hi Mommy,
It's great being here in the “heart” of the financial world. Hilary Clinton is here in New York today, too. In my business it’s important to be a part of the New York pulse.
It’s a bit cooler here compared to L.A. but I can easily adjust to varied climatic conditions. There’s a gym here, too—so that helps.
Love,
Michael Armijo
P.S. I have your ARUBA refrigerator magnet.
I told Alan we had to write each other postcards. We wrote while at a cafe. It’s fun to people watch and eavesdrop at cafes but it’s also very fun to write postcards to the person sitting next to you (even if they try to peek at what you’re writing). Here’s what Alan wrote me, using the Aruba postcard he chose:
3/3/99 8:20AM Dear Michael,
Well, what can I say? This was the ideal week of fun, sun and fresh fish. The only negative was the bald gay man and not enough exercise. Of course, it could have been better if our Verona 30 stocks and Internet 10 stocks closed higher.
Instead of recounting the types of fish or 5 cent slot machines or foo-foo drinks or time-sharing resorts, let me tell you one thing. I Love You. I Enjoy You. It’s so relaxing and exciting to be with you alone.
We are now off to the Plaza Athenee via the Luxury Link deal. I’m sure we will enjoy the third part of this trip. Maybe we can go dancing on Friday or Saturday night. How about tea somewhere? Should we go to the NYSE for a Verona picture? Well, let’s just see how we feel.
You got so tan and look so good. Remember “Catch of the Day” Aruba Style, no butter. In conclusion, I had a great time resting and picking you up on the beach. You’re A Total Hunk.
Love You,
Alan
I also sent Paloma a postcard that included a Bonus Recipe of SEVICHE:
Photo: ADONIS, A Total Hunk
March 3, 1999, Dearest Paloma,We made it to ARUBA. 80% of the tourists are from the USA. What was horrible was the FAT people you look at on these beautiful beaches. I'm NO PRIZE but I looked like an ADONIS compared to most of them. Ha-ha
The fresh Caribbean fish was absolutely fantastic. One day I still want to go to that island off the coast of Africa that you went to. What was it called? Seychelles? Now we are headed for New York to see Lauren, Alan's daughter who goes to New York University. I think I told you.
Love, Michael
And one more postcard for mom that I picked up and saved when I was in Shanghai, China back in 1994. The artist is Jia Shun Li and the postcard is from her original oil on linen painting titled A Canal in Shanghai.
3/8/99 Dear Mom,
Here are the Aruba magnets I promised you. One from Aruba and one from New York. I’m sure you’ll know which one is which.
See You Soon,
Love,
Michael Armijo

Remain Calm, Take it Slow
“Waste nothing—remember, there is a purpose for everything. These scraps can be very useful.” --Rohinton Mistry, A FINE BALANCE At least President Bill Clinton was acquitted by the Senat in his impeachment trial earlier this month (on February 12, 1999). It was all such nonsense, interfering with progress for the USA that he had consistently been doing.
In the meantime, a former coworker I know, Gloria Romero (from my Pac Bell Yellow Pages days in San Francisco) always remembers how I like postcards. So, she sent me a sweet card from where she is living now (Gig Harbor, Washington):
February 23, 1999
Hi! Michael,
Finally getting a letter off to you. Enclosed are various postcards and a picture of George and at Gig Harbor. Health checkup for both of us was fine and glad of that. I’m getting ready for my trip. Nina, my daughter, and two other ladies (From San Francisco, my MACY’s Cooking Class friends) and me...” PARIS” here we come. We may even try to take the train to Italy for a day or two. We all love to cook. We got an apartment in Paris. Nina and I have our own place with my friends about a block away. We will be close to everything and can walk and take the Metro. We are leaving on March 22nd and returning April 7th. Nina and I will be celebrating our birthdays in Paris. I’m excited.
Love retirement...George and I may go to London next year.
Now’s your new venture in the business world. Lots of Luck to you. It will be successful.
Keep in touch.
Love Your Friends,
Gloria & George
My subtle correspondence to friends and family about my Financial Advisory business (Verona Capital) are ending up with responses like “Congratulations”, “You’ll be successful”, “How exciting” ...but where are the sign-ups and exclamations that I’m looking for like, “I want to be a client!” Such is life. I’ll remain calm, take it slow.
With free time I wrote mom a postcard on February 24th, 1999. It's actual a classic hard-to-find photo of model, Naomi Campbell, for the DO NOT DISTURB Versace themed collection:
Hi Mom,
Tell Ashley I saw this card & she reminded me of Jovan.
I’m on the way to Aruba. It’s a pretty clear blue sky outside my airplane window. We are somewhere between L.A. and Miami right now.
I hope they sell magnets on the Carribean Island of Aruba. I would hate to disappoint you. It needs to be added to your refrigerator.
Before you know it, I’ll be back in L.A and I’ll be planning my trip to deliver your 1998 tax return documents. If you had a computer, you could send me an e-mail. I could read it in Aruba.
After Cable TV, then we get you a computer, ok? That’s final.
Love Ya,
Michael
And Gloria (Alan’s mom) isn’t shy by sending me a B&W postcard of sexy guys from Abercrombie & Fitch. Too funny:
3/1/99
Hi my Love,
Thinking and missing you, so decided to let you know about it. Things are going fine. I came doing okay and I am the best babysitter out there. This could be my new vocation. All is well. Weather is great, saw AFFLICTION. It’s a “C”.
Love Always,
Glorya (new spelling, looks chic)
Hmmm...a “C” is satisfactory; but “C” is also for carrots.

My Imagery Touches
“Always remember there are good people.” --Miriam Halahmy, A BOY FROM BAGHDAD Cousin MaryAnn found a dramatic clipping of an older woman and a younger woman behind a green door that is just opening a crack as the hands of a mysterious man peeking on the other side is also apparent, makes me wonder. She wrote a great interpretation of the image that I must share it. I always like to add my imagery touches everywhere. MaryAnn wrote:
This picture speaks to me. It’s powerful. It says differing things to different people. Here’s what it says to me.
“I am that old woman. I love her face, her shawl, her gray hair. Sometimes I feel older than her. Sometimes I feel like I’ve smiled a million smiles, and I don’t know what brought me such joy. I can’t remember them all. It’s sad. I should have kept a journal of my laughter. They would tell the strength of my character. For it is in laughter that we hear our tears:
Tears—How many have I shed in my life? I don’t want to remember. I don’t want to keep a journal of my cries. But maybe I should. They tell the story of my life. In my tears I have healed.
I like the girl standing behind the old woman. I am that girl. Sometimes I’m like a child and I scold myself. When will I ever grow up? Other times I am glad I’m still a kid at heart. I hope I always find humor in everything. To me, the doors represent life and all it has to offer. The girl looks eager to live hers. She’s ready to push people aside so she can live her life. And yet, she holds onto the old lady like a piece of her childhood.
We are all like that girl in a way. We’re so eager to experience life. But we do it with a childlike innocence at first. When we face our first trial as an adult our innocence is lost.
Did you notice the black hand to the right of the girls’ face? It represents the first trauma she will face as an adult. It’s at the entrance waiting for her to hold it, experience it, grow from it.
The girl will be alright. You can tell she’s strong. Her face shouts the strength she holds inside. When she’s ready she can sit with the old lady and have a cup of tea. They will talk far into the night about their laughter and their tears. Hmmm---sounds like a nail polish session to me."
And leave it to Gloria (Alan’s mom) to find a unique NYC 1920 Black and White photo of a young Black couple titled FUTURE EXPECTATIONS, photographed by James Van Der Zee.

Fine-Tuning and Tender Loving Care
‘As with almost everything in life, if you are polite and present yourself favorably, it is probable that you will succeed.’--Christian Baker Kline, ORPHAN TRAIN, a novel Cher is dominating the charts now with her song called BELIEVE. I really love that track. When you haven't heard her voice in a while it rings true for a comeback.
Cousin Edward in Albuquerque made himself seem exhausted after dealing with Valentine's Day at his Flower Shop. He sent a Teddy Bear card with some cool family pics. He surprised me by framing a candid photo I took of a young artist at work that I had sent him. He also created a collage of some of the select cards I've sent him. That was a WOW surprise to know he thought enough to decorated his house with my imagery touches. He mentinoed his nephew's wedding in Santa Clara (he works for INTEL), so I already discussed with mom and we are seriously thinking of attending as she hasn't seen her cousin Mabel in years. I do like to get advanced notice in order to plan things out.
Feb. 10, 1999,
Dear Michael,
We just went through our 20th Valentine’s Day and both Margaret and I don’t really know if we want anymore. Retirement is sounding better and better.
And you’re just starting out! Congratulations on your new venture. I already knew about it before your last card because Denise had received your simulcast. I wish you complete success. The biggest problem in our business in not cash flow (which it is sometimes) but entry level employees. For the first 3 or 4 months the absence rate is very high and after that disciplinary problems start cropping up. Naturally, the more you pay an employee at the low end, he (or she) does become better until you can’t afford them anymore and when fully trained they move on.
But in your field, I don’t suppose this would be a problem if your associates are top level professionals. At any rate the best of Luck to you and Alan.
Enjoy the pictures. Not eh sensitive quality of yours—but fun. Thanks for the artist picture.
Note: Dean and Renee are getting married on October 8th in San Francisco and we’re all coming out. Make a note. Write when you can. Always enjoy your cards a lot.
Love You,
Edward
Cousin Patty Trujillo-Richfield wrote me from Philadelphia and she sent a photo of herself. She reminds me of my Grandma Mathilde (but with darker hair). Her grandmother, Jesusita Garcia was Mathilde’s sister so it would make sense that there is a resemblance. These resemblances seem to skip a generation.
2/14/99 Dear Michael,
Received your letter and it was good to hear from you. I have a touch of arthritis in my right shoulder and have some difficulty writing. I should get a computer, right? Enclosed is a photo of me from Christmas 1997. I was going to send it to you last year but I didn’t like it and I still don’t but next year might be worse.
Thank you for your card from your vacation. I almost felt as if I were there.
I wish you success in your new venture. I just wrote to Aunt Eva Montoya and I am still behind in my correspondence. I’ll write again soon. Take care!
Your Cuz, Love, Patty
I like how Patty mentioned her Aunt Eva (my dad’s first cousin & MaryAnn Montoya-Gehling's mother). MaryAnn Montoya-Gehling also sent a nice email about her Valentine’s Day and more. There’s always more with her. She’s interesting and she’s growing on me. Of course, Alan says, “I don’t know how you take it.”
Dorothy Rua sent a sweet Valentine’s Day card also:
Dear Michael, Hope it’s a wonderful Valentine weekend for you. Happy Valentine’s Day.
Love you,
Dorothy
P.S. Just received your great card. Yes, I’ve been very busy with work, but I will write soon.
Alan also found a big V card for me. I liked it, especially the way he decorated the envelopes. Inside the card were these words imprinted:
Most people don’t understand that when you’ve found the right person, Love doesn’t grow old—it grows better.
We know exactly how to bring each other joy, pleasure, and comfort, when to be close, and when to give each other space.
We have the kind of trust that only comes from time and experience.
And yet, even know you so well, sometimes I’m overwhelmed by the intensity of all my feelings for you.
We will be in love forever and loving you will always be the thing that makes me happiest in the world. Happy Valentine’s Day.
Those imprinted words were so touching because it was as if he’d actually write those words. It's no wonder he chose this card.
In his own handwritten words, he added:
For Michael, In almost ten years since we met...I love being with you almost every moment.
Love You So Much.
I Love You, Alan.
Alan and I saw a new Brendan Fraser and Alicia Silverstone film called BLAST FROM THE PAST. It was a super romantic-comedy. We loved it. It’s definitely a feel-good story.
My sister-in-law, Helen, sent an email the day after Valentine’s. I had written her that Alan and I are planning an escape to the Carribean island of Aruba. We are looking forward to that escape and the turquoise blue water. I loved how she needed to vent and get her ‘bitchy feelings’ out. Relationships always need fine-tuning and tender loving care. Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt are the hot topic in Hollywood gossip circles. They’re in the introduction phase, so who knows how long that will last with fine-tuning and tender loving care.

I get dizzy sometimes. There are so many familial connections. When I’m in the State of NM I feel a sense of belonging because so many random people could be related to me in some way—and we don’t know it.
Meanwhile, Cousin Marie-Antoinette had a sad blow as her mother died (Lourdes V Lucero) on February 6, 1999. Marie-Antoinette wrote me:
Dearest Cousin Michael, Hope and pray you are doing well. I’m really trying hard not to miss mom as much as I do because I know she’s with Our Lord and happy with all our loved ones that have gone ahead, but it’s so difficult.
I’m so proud of you and your new endeavor. You're such a wonderful person that God will be at your side every inch of the way.
You're always in my thoughts and prayers, Michael!
God Bless You,
Love,
Marie-Antoinette
P.S. I.O.U a longer letter next time!
And from Cousin Edward Espinosa in Albuquerque: Did you get word of Marie-Antoinette's mother’s death (Aunt Lourdes)? The funeral was in Cerrillos, NM and it was nice to see so many Lucero’s again, but sad; particularly since there is a family feud between Gilbert (a son) and Marie-Antoinette.
I have invited Gilbert to spend a weekend with me (he looked so alone) and has said, “Yes”, but not when. Keep you posted.

And I wrote to Paloma to give her the latest scoop, using BELLAGIO Las Vegas stationery: Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, 12:15PM
Dear Paloma,
Since you and Alexandre enjoyed Las Vegas so much the last time you were here I thought I'd send this to you. The HOT new hotel in the BELLAGIO and it's Italian Theme. Alan was there on business last weekend with his real estate partners and he stayed at the BELLAGIO. He liked it so much that we are going this weekend! Across the street from the BELLAGIO they are building the new PARIS HOTEL. I understand that the Eiffel Tower (or replica of) is close to done. The PARIS HOTEL is supposed to be completed by September 1999.I loved your recent postcard, especially the Frederico Garcia Lorca stamps. Too Cool! Did you see the movie based on him starring Andy Garcia? I forget the name of the film. I'm glad you liked the gifts I sent.
It's funny about the story of how I know of the boy band 2BE3. When Alan and I went to Italy in October 1998 we were in Paris on our last day/night. When we were at the Paris Airport, I saw a CD/Tape Music store. I saw the 2BE# CD and was curious, but you know how expensive these airport stores are, so I did not buy it. Instead, I wrote the name of the group and when I returned to L.A. I went online to Amazon.com and did a search and found the CD for cheap. I received it in the mail 3 days later. And so, that's how I discovered them and in turn how it ended up on the music tape I made for you. Ha-ha
Again, your Benidorm/Espana postcard was too cool. You know how I love palm trees. It reminded me of our visit to Santa Cruz...a "few" years ago.I also got your card about seeing Woody Allend during the Christmas Holidays at the tiny lingerie store in Paris with his young Asian wife. That was a good sighting.
My most recent sighting was Sylvester Stallone at SPAGO Beverly Hills when we were dining there one night a month ago. He was wearing a gorgeous blue Italian suit and was with a group of people, including his very 'young' wife.
The latest news with me is that I gave my two weeks' notice at Charles Schwab & Co. as a stockbroker on 12-31-98. My last day at work there was 1-15-99. They were sad that I was leaving but they said the door was always open for me to come back to work there. And what am I doing now? Well, Alan and I have formed our own Investment Management Company. We registered with the State of California and got the name: VERONA CAPITAL MANAGEMENT. Enclosed is my new business card. It's much nicer being self-employed. We set our own schedules, and our time is more flexible. We manage people's money. In essence, our ideal client has $100,000 or more. Hopefully, the client won't need their funds for at least 12 months. We actively research companies and buy growth stock and/or dividend paying stocks. We currently manage about $5 Million in assets. We are exclusive and are having fun with this because we both enjoy it. We're trying to work out a combination trip to NY and the Carribean Island of Aruba. We will probably go at the end of February or the first week of March. I need some sunshine.
Here's a cool postcard of James Dean from a postcard book I found at a yard sale. I was always a big fan of Natalie Wood. How is your cool TWINGO car treating you?
I finally saw LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL (La vie Est Belle" about a month ago. I heard about the movie from you first! It was excellent. The little boy was so cute. He reminded me of Jonathan (from the photos I've seen) when he was that age.
Well, as much as I'd like to write more to you it's time to do some other things here. Oh yes...in our office we bought a sofa (on sale) at Roche Bobois. It's that Paris furniture store. What a beautiful couch it is, too. I hope this stationery inspires you to do another visit to Las Vegas in 1999 or 2000. WE can meet you there if you do. Let us know.
Lots of Love,
Always,
Michael J Armijo
P.S. A few postcards for you too.... CENTRAL STATION and THIN RED LINE
And I received more news from Chris Armijo in the US ARMY. It was a great read. He wrote in pencil on eight pages of a mini-notebook. Too cute but I really got a great feel of his predicament. Thank God I never joined—to think I actually considered Officer Training School after college. I think I only thought of it for a day after being inspired by actor, Richard Gere in his 1982 movie, AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN. I bet my life would be different today had I taken that route. It’s all about that one path one takes.
07 Feb 99, Sunday
Michael & Alan,
Hello boys! Greetings again. Boot Camp—not just an adventure, a trial in patience.
My platoon has 54 guys in it. Half of them are annoying as hell and the rest never should have been allowed to live. Hehe Hè
This week will finish up with Basic Rifle Marksmanship, Qualifying on our M16A2. We have spent endless hours at the range. For our 7th week we got to throw grenades. A typical day starts at 0400 with formation at 0450. We do P.T. for an hour and then change clothes and head to chow. You would be amazed at the rate of speed that we consume food.
So, now that I am starting over and will be a college student, whatever am I going to do with my breaks? L.A. - I still owe you boys a visit. You have no idea the hell of being with 54 guys, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for 9 weeks. No one...I mean no one should be forced to endure this.
11th of March is graduation day and then the following day I should ship out to San Antonio, Texas for 15 weeks. The whole process will start over. Except that I will be allowed passes and evenings are my free time.
I need to ask if either of you can find time to do some research and see what is near the base for my enjoyment. If so, do not send printouts—just jot it down in a letter. I am already planning my first pass. I pity the person I spend it with. It’s going to be a marathon.
All and all Basic has not been terrible. The hardest part is getting 54 guys to work as a Team. Part of the team familiarization concept is that we are all to look alike. Hence, the uniform, P.T. clothes, etc. We have wall lockers, and they must watch. There is a certain order our clothes must be with legs facing one way, all buttons zipped. You would be amazed at the number of buttons on one of these uniforms. Dress right. Dress is the term for everything being the same.
According to those who “have gone before” Basic has changed drastically. We got to watch the Super Bowl and are going to a wrestling match tonight. I actually was able to bullshit my way into accessing a computer twice now. Although I was paranoid as hell while checking my email! I think for me the hardest part of Basic Training is the isolation and the uniformity. I find it difficult having someone dictate orders around the clock! But now that we are 5 ½ weeks along we find ourselves automatically reacting. SOLIDERIZATION.
So, tell me about the trips you bid on...nay plans for the New Year?
Take Care, Love , Chris

‘Music was the thing we all had in common, and there is no danger in music.’--Thomas Thompson, BLOOD AND MONEY I'm being brainwashed by this new NSYNC song called "God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You". My niece, Ashley, will be happy about that. She's obsessed about this boy band.
I received an early Valentine’s note from Reed Campbell, a former fellow co-worker from Pacific Bell Yellow Pages:
Happy Valentine’s Day
Dear Michael,
This is a little early but will be in Hong Kong from the 7th to the 17th. So didn’t want to miss you. Weill send a card from there. Hope your Xmas and New Year’s was a happy one. I hope that this mess in the Gulf won’t affect you in a personal way. I’ll write more later.
Best ever,
Reed
I liked the little comic at the bottom of Reed's stationery.
At this time in the Gulf region, tensions remained high due to the ongoing conflict between Iraq and the USA. The USA continued to enforce no-fly zones over Iraq and conducted airstrikes in response to Iraqi violations. Ouch!
Cousin MaryAnn wrote again. I had gifted her a journal a while back and she was supposed to fill it up and return it to me for me to read:
Dear Michael,
Thank you for sending me a sample of your Verona stationery and business card. It’s simple, yet elegant. I was surprised. I thought it would be elaborate, and I’m glad you didn’t do it like that. It would have been too ostentatious. I like the gold V. The business card is well done, too.
I’m so proud of you. Bust most of all, I’m happy for you. Since I met you, you have wanted to have your own business. I remember you asking me if I thought you could make it on your own. I didn’t know you too well, so I looked up your numbers. It said you were meant to have your own business, be your own boss. You don’t like to follow orders and are independent. I also said you are capable of handling money. Those are all personality traits of a good businessman. I wrote you back and encouraged you to go ahead. Now your dream is fulfilled. Good for you. And Alan is your business partner. I’m proud of him, too. You will work well together. Do you go to your office every day? Do you spend most of your day there? How about Alan?
Are you taking pictures of your office? If so, can I have one? I would love to see what it looks like.
Do you have a secretary, or is that not necessary yet?
Yes, I will write Sandra Donald. I chuckled when you addressed me as “Schwest” before you asked me to do it. You think I will do anything if you call me Schwest, don’t you? Then you asked me to do it for you. Funny. Don’t you know I will help anyone in need? You don’t have to butter me up. By the way, will you call Antonia some time? She gets discouraged. She has had bronchitis a long with the chemo and has been unable to work. She loves hearing from Family members, and she thinks a lot of you. Of course, I clued her in to what you are really like. Just kidding.
I haven't written in your journal—that you gifted me-- for a while. I started writing something and I was interrupted. Now, I don’t know what I wanted to write, so it just sits there. Most of the journal is done. There are only about 30 empty pages. I will hate to send it to you. I am attached to it now. How do you like my business card? We have had these for a few years. I think we need to get new ones made and put our email address on it.
I must get this printed before the mail goes out today.
I love you lots.
Schwest
My distant relative, Chris Armijo, who I met during Family ancestry research has joined the US ARMY. He sent me a photo. I met him once but don’t know exactly how we are linked with regard to my family tree; however, his looks are clearly Armijo with the trademark eyebrows. He is gay, too—but he’s in the don’t ask; don’t tell scenario being in the military. Too funny. I also liked the little comic on his stationery. He wrote to both Alan and me:Guys,
Congrats on the new business venture. Hope all goes well. Maybe someday I can be an associate or an Office Admin.
What can I tell you about Basic Training? It’s rough. No coffee (espresso); eye candy galore. Physical training like you would NOT believe. My body is starting to look good. Can’t wait till summer.

Basic Training graduation is 11 March 1999. Cannot wait—we get up at 4AM every morning. Makes for an extremely long day. Sorry this letter is choppy and short. Don’t have a lot of time today. Have to make mail call. More to follow soon. Write me often, it keeps me sane.
Love,
Chris

Overwhelming
‘Morning came but the answers didn’t.’--Ian Patrick Williams, A.I. P.I. President Clinton must be overwhelmed as his impeachment trial continues.
I received a THINKING OF YOU card from Marie-Antoinette. It was very nice, but it was simply dated and signed your cousin with the imprinted words: To let you know you’re thought of every day and always in a very special way!
Aren’t I the lucky one. Too sweet.
The EURO currency is being introduced in World Markets. This sounds like a good thing in the long run. The EURO debuted on January 4, 1999.
My cousin MaryAnn sent me an intense email about ANTONIA (Rosalia Antonia Garcia). She is my dad’s first cousin. Michael,
I called Antonia today. She had her 3rd chemo yesterday. She is doing ok so far. But she has the flu. She had to hock more things to buy medicine for her cough and ears. Then, one of the people she sells tamales to told her he can’t buy form her anymore. It was a big company, too.
Michael, her situation is so overwhelming. I don’t know how she takes it. I help her all I can. We have her rent paid up but she is trying to get free food now. It’s so sad. She works when she can and she has been able to keep her phone paid. I hope she can get help with the utilities.
She doesn’t have a license to sell her tamales, so she sells to people she knows. I gave her Uncle Charles phone number in Denver. I am hoping he will have family members who will buy her tamales. She would like more of the family’s phone numbers. Can you send her an updated list of the ancestry chart? She wants one. She needs one with the recent phone and addresses, too. Maybe one from the reunion? I told her I would ask you. Here is her address. It’s different from the one you gave me: Antonia Garcia
PO Box 134
Evans, Colorado 80620
Thanks, Michael
When Jose Mercado (her son) was here I never got to talk to Antonia. He always told me everything was fine—but it wasn’t. She pretended she felt fine when she was sick. She lies to protect him. She is doing well with the chemo, but she still can’t work like she used to. She has to borrow money from friends and hock things all the time.
Floyd (her brother) came through and sent her $200. She paid bills with that.
Michael, she stands outside of bars in Wyoming and asks men to buy her tamales. I don’t know how she does it. Anyway, she is hopeful everything will work out. I’m sure it will. Thanks for sending her the chart and phone numbers. MA
Alan’s mom, Gloria, sent me a ‘fishy’ card.

Dearest Michael, Jack and I want to thank you for your continued thoughtful consideration in all ways and just being the wonderful guy you just are. Knowing you has made our life much richer and happier. Looking forward to a forever loving relationship.
Love Always,
Gloria & Jack
Peace talks in France are ongoing in an attempt to halt the Kosovo War. Now that is overwhelming!

I know Jose Mercado (Antonio's son) is attending UCLA for a Theater Arts Masters Program. His uncle Floyd is helping him out with tuition. I plan to see him and Antonia when she comes to visit Los Angeles.

Fingers Crossed
“Other feelings clogged his tongue.” --Georg Eliot, DANIEL DERONDA
My subtle approach for new clients with VERONA CAPITAL MANAGMENT is simple awareness to friends and family. I mention it to let them know what I’m doing: helping people to build wealth. Maybe they’ll become clients or pass the word to others that they know. Who knows? Of course, many simply say, “Congratulations.” When I get that reply I say to Alan, “So, where’s their money?” We joke around. Our accountant, Cathy Imai, who built her own successful business gives us profound advice: “Be patient. It takes time.” I can't help but feel nervous though. I want instant gratification (fingers crossed).Speaking of...I received an email from my cousin, Denise Padilla, the one who just graduated with her PhD in robotics/engineering:
Wed. 13, Jan 1999
Michael,
Congratulations on your new business endeavor. How exciting! I wish you the best of luck. I’m sure it’s a little difficult to get the ball rolling, but I’m sure you’ve got it all under control and you'll be a great success! My uncle (Edward Espinosa) is very happy for you as well. I shared the wonderful news with the family. We’re all very proud.
So, how were your holidays? I hope they were wonderful. Ours were a little less pleasant, we lost my grandfather on Christmas Day. Very early on Xmas morning I took my parents to the airport to go see my brother, Dean (he and his fiancé couldn’t make it home for the holidays). Later, that afternoon, Vic and I went to my grandfather’s house to give him his gifts and we found him. This is my dad’s father I’m talking about, so needless to say, things were quite melancholy for the holidays. I have started a new job at SANDIA LABS, so I will be getting a new email address hopefully next week. I’ll keep you informed. Vic and I are selling our house and are looking into building a new one. We would like to see a financial advisor because we went form a single income family to a two-income family and need to know how we should invest our money so that we can be very comfortable when we retire and so that we can also get some tax breaks. I would like to retire when Victor does, which means I’ll set my sights for 20 years (2019). Can you offer us some advice as to who we should talk to about this and what to expect? to give you a little insight on our situation, our income went form $38K to $108K when I started my job. I am extremely unknowledgeable when it comes to investments (prior to my job I never thought to learn about this). One step we have decided on, which I mentioned earlier, is to sell our house. We really don’t need a bigger house, but the one we own now is under $100,000 (a starter home). so, we are looking into upgrading. I would be very interested in what you have to say and look forward to hearing your response.
How is your family? I was just thinking. Do you speak Spanish? Well Cuz, I hope all is going very well as it sounds like it is.
Take Care and Love,
Denise Padilla
Fingers crossed for the next client. Time will tell.
