He Who Listens, Understands
“He had an enchanting laugh; when he laughed a whole world opened-up.” --German Russian, Olga Parem aka “OLA” who spent time with William Benjamin in Ibiza (from the book WALTER BENJAMIN, The Story of a Friendship by Gershom Scholem We arrived at Villa Mawr in Montego Bay, JAMAICA, on Sunday, May 23, and the butler was Lloyd, the cook was Estelle and the housekeeper was Grace. We were only staying there a few days and then moving on to another area of Montego Bay in Jamaica at a place called Fairway Manor.
The week was fun. The excursion on the boat with Jaan Torv was a very choppy ride and quite scary. Gloria and Alan vomited. Only Lauren and I maintained composure. Lauren went up on top of the small boat and looked out at the horizon. It was like a Gilligan’s Island boat, and I hoped we would not be marooned on a desert island. Jack Cohen was the smart one to remain at the villa. I couldn’t go above the cabin to see the horizon because it was much too choppy, and I was quite scared. It really was too scary for words, so I stayed below and tried to maintain a balance with my body and mind. I kept saying to myself, “Please let me get through this alive.”
On my Birthday we moved to a new Villa called THE FAIRWAY MANOR. Alan hired a steel band for entertainment by the pool before dinner. It was utterly delightful.
My Birthday Cards:
5-26-1999 Michael,
Happy Birthday! As you see from the card, there is a long road ahead. It has several visible cars on that road. Please be happy, satisfied and healthy in the car. It must stay on the road and go where you want. Do what you want but please let me drive the car if you want to get there. If not, and if we have time you may drive. Exercise more, eat less.
I Love You. Alan
Another postcard from ALAN (of The Forum in Rome):
Michael, HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Well, WHEN IN ROME in October--take a picture for your new frame.
Another postcard from ALAN (of DAVID de Michelangelo, in Firenze):
Michael,
Happy B-Day, This is what I will look like when we visit Florence in Oct.
Love,
Alan
And my thoughtful Birthday card from Alan's mom, Gloria and his stepfather, Jack:
5/26/99
Dearest Michael,
Love is the passion of the soul and the strength of the spirit. Love is all that matters—be it from a lover, friend or parent and we love you dearly. We are so very happy that we can celebrate your birthday with you. You are in our inner circle of loved ones, and we don’t allow too many in. Looking forward to celebrating all your birthdays with you.
Love Always,
Gloria & Jack
Here is an Irish Blessing:
May your thoughts be as glad as shamrocks,
May your heart be as light as a song,
May each day bring you bright, happy hours,
That stay with you all the yearlong.
Proverb of the month : “ He who listens, understands.”
Other Birthday Cards:
From my grandmother, Mary Genevieve Lucero:
Dear Grandson,
This brings a special birthday wish, Because, as you must know, your happiness means everything to those who love you so, and with these warm and loving thoughts are still more wishes, too. That all the days ahead will bring Life’s finest things to you. HAPPY BIRTHDAY. I love you. Grandma
And from my cousin in Colorado Springs, MaryAnn Montoya-Gehling:
Michael,
Happy Birthday. I looked for just the right card but couldn’t find it. Then I started to take down my grandson, Tanner Gehling, art works to put up a new painting and couldn’t throw it away, so I made it into a card. I love his choice of colors. I made up my own motto when I reached ‘40’.
“I can say and do what I want because I’m forty.”
I thought I was so grown-up and so hot. I loved saying it!
Have a good one.
M.A.
...and to continue with the October 1998 European journal:
October 3, 1998,
Sometime after 5AM at the Amstel Intercontinental Hotel in Amsterdam, in Room 116...
Since I last wrote as we were on our flight from L.A. to Atlanta, a lot has happened, so I am playing ketchup (catch-up).
When we arrived in Atlanta, we were at Gate A and had to get to Gate E-17 for the connecting flight from Atlanta to Amsterdam. We took a tram (like the one at the Denver Airport) to get across the Concourse E. We could sense an aura of a foreign universe just by the looks of the remaining people on the tram who were getting off at the last exit of Concourse E, including a munchkin, midget or short person. He was a little bald and chubby man. We guessed he’d be on our flight, and he was. After we disembarked from the tram we had to walk and walk through these immaculate white and gray endless corridors that already seemed foreign; however, we were still in Atlanta, Georgia.
At Gate E-17, Shelley Henson, the Delta Gate Agent brought us back to the USA with her Southern Peachy Atlanta accent. She was utterly sweet and even located two seats for Alan and I to sit together, blocking the seat between us for additional comfort and space.
The awaiting passengers gave us a glimpse of what Amsterdam people look like. The Dutch are, of course, Caucasian, usually blond with light eyes. There were two pretty blond girls. They caught me eyeing them and matched my eye contact. Did they find me attractive? They were such young girls. There were a few cute young men in their early twenties. Alan surely noticed them. He especially liked the one in the green sweater who sat behind me on the plane. I didn’t tell Alan, but my feet touched his during the flight—not that it meant anything or that anything was wrong with that.
It was probably an 8-hour flight from Atlanta to Amsterdam. We had some nice tailwind along the way which positioned us into Amsterdam at around 10:30AM (Amsterdam time). I managed to finish writing most of the cards that I plan to mail upon our arrival to Italy. Writing letters and postcards in-flight is such a time save. Once I reach my destination all of that writing and addressing is done. I wrote something like this on the Amsterdam postcards:
“I’ve made it to AMSTERDAM! Wow! The canals...the beauty. Planning to walk to the MUZIEK THEATER to see if we can get tickets to whatever is playing. Then on to the RIJKSMUSEUM, the Van Gogh Museum, The Erotic Museum (curios) and Rembrandt Park. Also, can’t wait to taste the Gouda Cheese here in Holland.”
Ironically, everything I wrote actually came to pass.
I found “The Other Side Coffee Shop” which is far superior to our Starbucks.
We had the same menu on the Atlanta to Amsterdam flight that we had on the LAX to Atlanta flight. Instead of chicken, this time, I had the steak and creatively made a sandwich using the Gouda Cheese that was provided. Alan copied me.
It was great to stretch our legs once we landed in Amsterdam. I started reading my new book, NOW AND THEN by William Corlett. I highlighted sentences that I enjoyed throughout my reading time. Alan finished THE NOTEBOOK by Nicholas Sparks during our flight. After patiently waiting for our luggage, we followed behind a long line of people with EuroCarts waiting to get out as we arrived. Alan made me go into an airport supermarket to buy water to take my vitamins. It sure seemed like a European market. It was something I’d pictured a Denmark (Danish) Market would be like. I’ve never been to Denmark, but I’ve seen films.
Alas, we were in Holland. I bought flavored peach and vanilla water and a package of shredded Gouda cheese. The cashier spoke Dutch to me. I knew she asked if I had change and I said, “No.” It just seemed like that would be the question she would ask.
Alan did his usual RENT A HERTZ car deal in his usual efficient way. We walked outside and it was quite chilly. It’s funny about me. I never complain about weather conditions. I’m very adaptable to change in weather patterns. I think hard rain and hail are the worst of course. However, Alan is another story. In Palm Springs, when it’s 120 degrees he will “oooo” and “ahhh”. Now with a 45 degrees temperature in Amsterdam you can be rest-assured he would do his “oooo” and “ahhh” routine over the chill factor.
After loading the luggage onto our car, a Blue Opel, I noticed a fire extinguisher on the passenger floor side which I thought to be unusual.
The Hertz map printout form the airport to the Hotel surely helped us on the correct freeway and the right direction; however, once we took our EXIT the street names were not exactly evident. After about an hour of navigation by me we finally found our beautiful AMSTEL INTERCONTINENTAL HOTEL. It is surely tope of the line. There’s even a Royal Suite, suitable for the likes of Princess Diana or Queen Elizabeth or Nancy Reagan (who we recently saw at a recent party we attended last Friday night in Brentwood, CA). The greeting hotel bellman in front of the Hotel was wearing his uniform which added to the grandeur and elegance. A pretty young, blond, green or blue-eyed girl escorted us to our room. She was quite pleasant.
I agreed with Alan to an hour nap vs immediately attempting my itinerary. So, we slept. It was 1:20PM and we awoke at 5pm. “Ooops to only sleeping for an hour.” The nap was well worth it though.
We started our walking excursion. It was getting close to 6pm, so we had to go to The Muziek Theater to see about tickets to a show. They were sold out. They had no show for Saturday and no availability for Sunday, so we shrugged off that idea. Alan wasn’t too keen on a cultural “sit back and watch a show” for tonight anyway.
Using my streetwise map we ventured via many canals, talking a few photos along the way. Alan said, “This is a great preview to what Venice Italy is like.”
We found a gay street called Reguilers-dwarsstraat. Forget trying to ask Alan to pronounce that street. We were looking for the street to see about eating at a place called RESTAURANT HET TUYNHYS on Reguliersdwarsstraat 28. Of course, they were booked for the evening, so we made a reservation for 8pm tomorrow night, Saturday. Alan insisted I be in-charge, so I made the reservation under Michael, telling him the name of our hotel. The restaurant host was clearly impressed and very nice.
We drifted along to a place called CAFE APRIL. It looked more like a gay bar. We both had delightful cappuccinos at the bar. I think we stick out like a sore thumb too because all eyes were obviously on both of us when we walked in. It’s as if it’s known we are foreign visitors or aliens. We also bought tickets to CLUB HEAT for tonight at the CAFE APRIL BAR.
I had the name of a Thai Restaurant, and we meandered along successfully with the laminated Streetwise Map to Kooning Van Siam on DE Oudezijds Voorburgwal. The restaurant was having a private party, but the gentleman detoured us (or referred us) to another Thai place on the leather bar street called Warmoesstraat. We need to go back there anyway to an Art Gallery called W139 that I want to see. This new THAI place was quite good. Alan had his glass noodles and vegetable soup, and we shared chicken satay and vegetable fried rice with a chicken and veggie dish along with ‘Water with Gas’. We agreed to go back to the Hotel to rest before our first big night out in Amsterdam. We walked back via a new direction using the main thoroughfare versus side streets.
At our hotel we watched the TMF9 channel which was the equivalent to the States Music Channel MTV. It’s great hearing the music and learning of new artists we like. So far, we liked “SOMEONE LOVES YOU HONEY” by Latricia McNeal; WE ROCK HARD by Ruffneck and CRUSH by Jennifer Paige. Look out...Alan did it this time with his “Black Outfit”. His black jeans and black Kenneth Cole ribbed crewneck that he recently bought in NYC. He was ready.
As I readied myself, we both concurred over the unique quality of our shower room. The shower is like a rainfall. Too cool! ...October 3rd in Amsterdam to be continued...

'The Place to Be Seen'
This week Alan and I had a Power Breakfast together at the Bel Air Hotel to discuss Verona Capital Management strategy. We attended the TIME WARNER Annual meeting in Los Angeles. Alan took his red Mercedes to Larry, his mechanic for tuning up. We also had a car wash and hit the gym. On May 20th, Gloria and Jack treated me to an early Birthday dinner. The following day I arranged an appointment with a couple that I had a great rapport with at Charles Schwab & Co. Their names are Robin and Eric Dolgin. The meeting went well but who knows if they will sign on as Verona clients. Time will tell. I also had a haircut appointment with Aeesha, a stylist at the Westside Pavillion. She is part black and part white I believe and has the most gorgeous green eyes I’ve ever seen. I made the point of telling her, “I’m so mesmerized by your eyes.” I got the feeling she expected me to ask her out on a date next but that obviously didn’t happen.
On Sunday, May 23rd we were flying to Jamaica for my 40th Birthday. The attendees were Susan Freiman and her beau, Jaan Torv, who happens to be the brother of Anna Maria Torv-Murdoch. Anna is going through a divorce with billionaire Rupert Murdoch and will likely finalize this year. Jaan also has a daughter named Anna Torv (an aspiring actress). Jack and Gloria also flew to Jamaica along with Alan’s eldest daughter, Lauren. Carrie couldn’t attend because she was in school. I stumbled upon a journal that Alan and I wrote-in together while we were in EUROPE last Fall 1998. I may as well share what we wrote now: EUROPE ‘in my written words’: Vacation, October 1, 1998
It’s 9:30AM in Marina Del Rey, CA. Alan and I just returned from Madeline’s French Bakery on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica for our coffee, chocolate and almond croissants. It’s just like a French Bakery. This morning, actress, Meredith Baxter-Birney was there reading a book called THE BEAR. The last visit at that Bakery we saw actress, Amy Irving (Steven Spielberg’s first wife) and actress Madeline Stowe with her husband, Brian Benben and their three-year-old daughter. Perhaps this bakery is ‘the place to be seen’. As far as I’m concerned though, the place to be seen is our forthcoming destinations: Amsterdam, Holland; Brussels, Belgium; Rome, Italy; Capri, Italy; Florence, Italy; Venice, Italy and Paris, France. Alan is on the phone, speaking to Arthur Kleinman about their latest endeavor, the East Coast Bagel Co. Business and YUMYUM Donuts. It looks like YUMYUM may buyout ECBC and rescue it from bankruptcy—if they can come up with the $2 Million bid. It could end up back on Alan’s lap along with his partners he hopes to be rid of one day. Alan and I were just reminiscing that it’s been about a year now since our Autumn trip 1997 to NY, Boston, Vermont and Maine. Taht was such a lovely time to go there. Funny how on the way home from Madeline’s Bakery that I saw a young man in his twenties, wearing a navy-blue sweatshirt with yellow bold imprint lettering of the word ‘MAINE’. Beginning today, all international flights have a survey compiled by the FAA-Federal Aviation Administration that will be presented to all passengers. It seems they want our nationalities, next of kin information, etc. They should collect that information at the time of reservation vs at the time one boards the airplane. Alas, we shall participate. You know me, I love to fill out surveys. We are flying free on DELTA thanks to frequent flyer miles. I wonder if James Sprague or Annie Nichols will be on any of our flights. They are two flight attendant clients of mine from Charles Schwab & Co. Our flight stops in Atlanta and will then proceed to Amsterdam. The layover in Atlanta is so brief, so I won’t feel guilty about not calling back my cousin, Judy Simpson, who lives there now. I double Alan will feel any guilt about calling his cousin who is also named Allan Freiman (but he spells his name ALLAN). EUROPE ‘in Alan’s written words’: 12:30PST, October 1, 1998 We got to the airport two hours before takeoff, but, alas, Delta’s computer system was own. As we waited to check-in, the Delta employees were baffled by no computer. They finally decided to check us in by hand and wrote baggage claim tickets. I hope it gets to Amsterdam. We proceeded to our gate to wait on another long line. When we got to the front, a young man in his twenties obviously under pressure told us that seating would now be open (like Southwest Airlines). So, we went to the front of the gate and waited and waited. They boarded everyone else first via all categories and finally got to open seating. Then a new category emerged: Tickets with a Handwritten Seat # in RED got to go in front of us. I finally OPENED MY MOUTH, and the check-in girl said, “Watch it! The pilot can throw you off the plane!” She used that exact wording. We got on the plane, seat #12A and #12B, heading to Atlanta on-time. Lunch looks like steak or chicken. The stock market was down to 7,600 before we left. As usual, per our trips, Michael is busy writing all of the addresses on his assorted postcards. EUROPE ‘in my own written words’: 3:30PM, October 1, 1998
I just finished the book THE NOTEBOOK by Nicholas Sparks. It’s such a sad, warm and poignant love story. It’s inevitable that we all age and reach a point where things aren’t as easy anymore. As usual, per our trips, Alan is busy with his headphones and CD Disc player in his own ‘musical world’ that he won't’ even share with me until I ask. I wrote out most of the postcards for Amsterdam. Once we get there, I’ll just need to get gilders (their currency) to buy stamps and mail them. I’m trying to be good with my diet. I had tomato juice and chose chicken and rice as my entree while bypassing the bread, butter and cake. We are not even in Atlanta yet. Jeez! More of the EUROPE, Fall 1998 journal to follow... ‘A man can become addicted to reading as to any other intoxicant. This is especially true for Europeans, who from a long heritage are as dangerously given to books as they are to alcohol. You reach for a book as you do for a drink, to escape the depressing banality of newspaper headlines, to wash away the disgusting aftertaste known as Contemporary Civilization. My father believed in general in a hierarchy of intellect, both in the world of books and the world of nature. Create A Buzz
‘It was at least change, and it came with a rush.’--Henry James, THE TURN OF THE SCREW, a short story written in 1898 Flew back from Oakland to LAX, arriving around noon. I called Linda Rubin (prospective client) to arrange lunch. She loves to talk, so I barely have to say anything. Linda got us involved with LAFTA-LA Film Teacher’s Assn, so we get invited to movie screenings for free. It’s pretty fun when we get an invitation to see things before it’s released.
At 8pm Alan and I were at the MARK TAPER THEATER in Downtown LA to see Donald Sutherland and Jamey Sheridan perform live on-stage in a two-hand psychological thriller called ENIGMA VARIATIONS. Gloria and Jack accompanied us. If it weren’t for Gloria who keeps tabs on what is going on in the Arts World we would miss out on these wonderful experiences.
The following day was my brother Tony’s 41st Birthday. I wished him a Happy one. My former staff clerk co-worker at Charles Schwab & Co., Carmen finally got her wish. She had three boys and now she gave birth to a baby girl, Kailei Theresa.
Alan and I received a last-minute invitation to the MGM Screening Room to see TEA WITH MUSSOLINI. It’s a movie that will be released soon (May 14th) but they want to create a buzz. So, we jumped on it because the stars in it include Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Joan Plowright, Lily Tomlin and CHER! So, how can it NOT be good?
I wrote to Paloma...a YOU KNOW YOU WANT IT postcard:
5-12-99 Dear Paloma,
I got the letter this time. Thanks! I will write back a longer response to it. I just wanted to write you a quick note to let you know I got it. You’re too sweet. So, how does it feel to be the “New 30” (40)? Since you’re already there and I’m not. Only kidding...
We loved the Relais & Chateau Guide. WE do use that! And thanks for noting your recommendations. We want to go to France by the end of 1999.
Oh...the best rates for BELLAGIO Hotel in Las Vegs are on Sunday and Monday.
More Later,
Love, Michael
Lauren gets a break from NYU and arrived Thursday, May 13 at 3:30-ish.
I’m in contact with Ferne Theis. She is a former regular client at Charles Schwab & Co. And misses me, so she could become a new Verona client. We shall see. She loves to hold her stock certificates though (very old school).
I called Birda on Friday the 14th at 510-522-1534. It’s always great to hear her voice. She always sounds so young on the phone. It’s like a voice that remains twenty-one for life. Also on Friday, Alan and I scheduled facials with a nice gal that Gloria turned us on to who is near our gym on Ocean Park Boulevard. We felt good after the facials. It was perfect as we were invited to another screening at the Paramount Pictures lot to see GENERAL’S DAUGHTER. This one includes the following actors: John Travolta, Madeline Stowe, James Cromwell, James Woods and Clarence Williams III (wow—from the MOD SQUAD). It’s about the murder of the daughter of a well-respected base commander; whereby, an undercover detective is summoned to look into the matter. A good political thriller/drama/mystery. We enjoyed it and it was fun to see it at the Paramount Studios. On Saturday, May 15th I went to the hospital to see Carmen who had just had her baby girl. She was happy.
Gloria has a pal named MUMSEY who organizes trips and we joined the group on Sunday at the CENTER FOR JAPANESE ART. It was a different activity for us—but quite enjoyable. When I see ART, I feel like being more creative myself.
The Charles Schwab & Co. Annual meeting is on May 17th in San Francisco. We couldn’t go but Alan and I listened to it. It was worthwhile as it keeps us abreast of the company.
I made more appointments next week with a couple of clients that adored me while at Charles Schwab & Co. -- Maxine Myers and Robin/Eric Dolgin. It remains to be seen if anything will come of it; however, nothing ventured nothing gained.
Alan submitted our forms to THE GOLDEN DOOR. It’s in Escondido (near San Diego). It’s a high-end spa. We stay for a week doing workout activities like hikes, gym, etc. We also get beauty treatments daily. By the end of the week will be transformed. We also look at it as a way to meet new prospective clients because it is definitely not a cheap all-week experience. Those who can afford to go there are definitely pre-qualified.

Mark Your Calendar
‘At times the sky looks like a beach dotted with pillows inviting us to rest.’--Ramon Gomez de la Serna, EIGHT NOVELLAS Mom and I arrived in Alameda at around 2pm on May 7th, Friday.
On Saturday morning it was Ashley’s birthday, but the plan was to attend Holly’s baseball game at 1:30pm. It was fun, cheering her on.
In the evening, we went to San Francisco to see the Reese Witherspoon movie, ELECTION. I had already seen it but I wanted mom to see it and I didn’t mind watching it a second time.
On Sunday night, Alan took Jack and Gloria to GEOFFREY’s in Malibu. He was good at keeping me informed at what I was missing out on.
Mom and I went to LY LUCK, the Asian place that Helen likes. My brother, Tony, was there with Helen and the girls. It was a nice gathering, and I love the noodles. Helen’s mom was there but she barely utters a word. She’s such a strange breed. Alan flew to Oakland on Monday Mary 10th because we had a dinner meeting with our newest client, Lisa Aquilina. It worked out nicely. I flew back to L.A. with Alan the next day. I called Linda Rubin, another prospective client in L.A--but she’s too high maintenance so I’m not so sure that’s going to work out for us. I called Christine Hicks and Jim from the Gym in hopes of seeing them at some point.
Upon our arrival back to L.A. I found a postcard from Gloria. She’s booked tickets for next month (June 15th) for Alan and I along with her and Jack to see A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, a staged play, at the Ahmanson Theater. The postcard simply advised me to ‘Mark Your Calendar’. I did just that. Gloria has taught me to always have something to look forward to. She lives her life this way.
There’s not much else happening other than my prospective client list. I’m trying to get more clients. We aren’t doing badly, but we’re not exactly doing great either. It would be nice to have enough management fees to cover our health insurance. I have COBRA Insurance now but that will only last for 18-months. I’m sure we will be okay by the time that runs out. As I always tell Alan, ‘The important thing is to find that balance, just be happy’. We are.

Basic Goodness
“We can find the most unexpected things when we aren’t even looking for them.” --T.J. KLUNE, in the book THE HOUSE IN THE CERULEAN SEA Alan and I went to see THE MUMMY starring Brendan Fraser. I really like Brendan. I think it stems from 1991 when we went to see a screening of MY GIRL and he was there at the after party. He was so nice to us. And so, my fan status for him is sticking. We liked THE MUMMY. It had some Raiders of the Lost Ark feeling to it but he made for a great hero. The costar actress, Rachel Weisz, was nice to look at and now I really like her, too.
Alan and I hit West Hollywood the following night (April 29th) for dinner at ‘asia de cuba’. I love the giant flowerpots decor in the patio there. The garlic mashed potatoes were fantastic—but over the top filling. My tummy was stuffed.
Mom arrived around noon from Oakland. We first took her to the Santa Monica Hangar Airport where an LA Antiques Show was taking place. We just browsed and didn’t buy anything. Then we took her to see a British film called GET REAL. It had a gay theme, so it was rather interesting to watch with her but the storyline was very well done. The Brits know how to do a good film. My favorite song was the one called LOVE IS ALL AROUND by The Troggs. I must add that as one of my ultimate favorites. I want LOVE to be all around me. Who wouldn’t? Saturday, May 1st we took mom to another movie. This one was screened early evening: NEVER BEEN KISSED, starring Drew Barrymore, a romantic comedy that we all really enjoyed. It balanced out the movie experience given that this one was not gay-themed. Ha-ha. After the movie we ate at one of our favorite Italian Restaurants with a beautiful outdoor courtyard called PANE VINO.
On Sunday, May 2nd we drove to Beverly Hills to our usual NATE N AL’s breakfast. Movie mogul, Lew Wasserman, was there as usual with his grandson, nibbling on his crispy bacon. The Maitre D from THE PALM Restaurant, Gigi, was there also. He was so friendly. Later that evening we had a Cinco De Mayo-style dinner and went to another movie called ENTRAPMENT. Mom understands ‘it’s LA’ so it’s all about movies here. She’s lucky that some good films were playing. This one starred Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones. I love Catherine Zeta-Jones. It was especially fun because Catherine’s character was named Gin (short for Virginia, my mom’s name) who played an insurance investigator after a Rembrandt painting was stolen from a New York City building. The caper went on from there. It was filled with action/crime and made for quite a thriller, too. We all loved the story. Mom is a big fan of Sean Connery, too. So, we were all happy.
We took mom to dinner at ‘asia de cuba’ on Monday night and a power breakfast at the BEL AIR HOTEL on Tuesday morning, May 4th. We watched a video at home of one of my favorite movies called DANGEROUS BEAUTY. It was released last year (1998) and takes place in Venice, Italy. On Wednesday, May 5th mom had a 3pm facial that I scheduled for her. She loved it and really looked great. For dinner we hit SPAGO in Beverly Hills with Gloria and Jack. There was no need to talk with Gloria there. She always has great things to bring up.
I had to print accounts belonging to Lisa Aquilina, a new client that my sister-in-law, Helen, introduced us to—but that was all I had to do on Thursday. Gloria came over for dinner. For the rest of the week (what was left of it), we just coasted, took walks to the beach/pier and relaxed. We were simply enjoying a week of basic goodness. Mom flew back to Alameda on Friday, May 7 and I flew with her--just in time for Ashley’s Birthday on May 8 and MOTHER’S DAY.
‘Whenever you see a bright and beautiful color, you are witnessing your own inherent goodness. Whenever you hear a sweet and beautiful sound, you are hearing your own basic goodness. Whenever you taste something sweet or sour, you are experiencing your own basic goodness. If you are in a room and you open the door and walk outside, there is a sudden breeze of fresh air. Such an experience may last only a second, but that whiff of fresh air is the smell of basic goodness.’--Chogyam Trungpa, in his book SMILE AT FEAR

A Few Nibbles
There's a bluebird in my heart that wants to get out but I'm too tough for him, I say, stay in there, I'm not going to let anybody see you. --Charles Bukowski, poet I received a cute GARFIELD The Cat card from Marie-Antoinette.
The outside of the card:
THE DEAL IS: I WRITE YOU EVERY ONCE IN A WHIULE, THEN YOU WRITE ME!
Inside of the card:
IT’S A TOUGH JOB BUT I KNOW WE CAN HANDLE IT!
04/22/99 Dear Cousin Michael,
Just taking a break from the proverbial “salt mines”. TeeHee! And was again thinking about you. Thought you’d get a kick out of this card!
Well, that’s enough of a break. Take Care. God Bless You!
Love Your Cousin,
Marie-Antoinette
P.S. Ruben is coming along beautifully.
On April 22nd, Alan and I went to West Hollywood for a special screening of a film called BARFLY. It was from 1987 starring Mickey O’Rourke and Faye Dunaway. We had never seen it, so we thought it would be a different sort of outing on that evening. It was based on the life a successful poet, Charles Bukowski, and his exploits in Hollywood during the 60s, 70s and 80s. It was a tad depressing but such is life for some.
In our business we have to look good, too. One’s appearance is a big part of the game. And so, we scheduled facials and body scrub treatments at OLE HENRIKSEN at the Sunset Plaza in West Hollywood. We felt so ‘brand new and refreshed’. It was unbelievable. The only sad part was when we got home. Our house had been crying. There was an unexpected mini flood.
To get our minds off of flood we went to see a movie on Saturday night, April 24th. The movie was ELECTION and we were pleasantly surprised by it. The story revolved around a student body election that satirizes politics and high school life. Matthew Broderick is a popular high school social studies teacher and Reese Witherspoon, an overachieving student whom he dislikes. When Reese runs for student government President, Matthew sabotages her candidacy by backing a rival candidate and tampering with the ballot count. I’m communicating with some of my Charles Schwab clients that I really connected with in hopes that they’ll become clients of mine one day. If they don’t, that’s okay too because I really liked these people—not just as customers. One in particular is Harriet Cutler. She recently sent me a postcard from her tip to Maryland. It reminded me that I hope to visit Maryland one day to taste authentic Maryland Crab Cakes.

Hi Michael,
Greetings from Maryland where I’m enjoying a lovely visit with my niece and family. We’ll be driving to New York State in a few days for a visit with her sister. I’ll go on to see friends and then home to Santa Monica on May 5th. Hope all goes well with one terrific financier and friend.

Daniela Sapriel is another former Charles Schwab client that I adore. Alan and I attended her get-together on April 25th for nibbles, talk and a water balancing demonstration. We did not stay for the water balancing but we had a few nibbles. I enjoyed Daniela’s friend, Maria Luisa, from Milan, Italy. Daniela described the many olive trees she has on her Italian property. I loved imagining that scene of olive trees.
That evening Alan and I watched double-feature movies. One of them we had missed from a couple of years ago (1996), a film remake of Truman Capote’s story IN COLD BLOOD (based on his best-selling book). It was pretty good, but chilling. The other movie was from 1966 that I had never seen called WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOLF, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. It was an excellent psychological drama. Fascination galore for me. It centered on a middle-aged New England professor and his wife, with the help of alcohol, use their young guests and emotional pain towards each other over the course of a distressing night. Great dialogue! ‘To discover the worthy of your existence: Be with yourself for a long period of time, spending lots of seconds, minutes and hours with yourself.’--Chogyam Trungpa, SMILE AT FEAR

Recovering Nicely
“You can believe what you like, but you MUST learn to be tolerant. That means respecting other people’s convictions.” --Tone Jansson, THE SUMMER BOOK Way back in 1985 when PRINCE released that song "1999" I vowed to play it frequently in the year 1999, so I am doing so. I can't describe the feeling back in the mid-1980s when I was an avid bicyclist. I had my SONY headphones on as I would ride and when "1999" came on randomly I would accelerate and FEEL SO GOOD and HAPPY. It was exhilarating to the max! It still is to this day.
This week is Internet 99 conference calls with INTEL, and LUCENT on April 14th; CISCO and RNWK: REAL NETWORKS on Thursday, April 15th; WORLDCOM on Friday, April 16th. I plan to listen to these calls. The Internet and the World Wide Web aka WWW is where it’s at right now.
Gloria thought of us by sending a beautiful card from the National Gallery. It’s a detail from a 1620 painting by Cognoscenti called FLEMISH:

Dearest Cousin Michael,
Just thought I’d let you know how everything is. Ruben is safe and sound thanks to the wonderful surgeons that worked on him. Went into surgery on the 9th of April, as I told you. They, the doctors, removed a baseball sized tumor surrounding the carotid artery and Thank God it was benign! Ruben stayed 3 days in ICU and two more in the private room but is home now, recovering nicely. Can’t tell you how much stress was building up! I’m just glad it’s in the past. I always thought I was at my very best under pressure. I don’t know anymore. Anyway, thought I’d let you know. I’ll be writing a little lengthier later on but for now Take Care and May God Bless you always. Give my love to your grandmother, my Aunt Genevive and your mom. Love you,
Your Cousin,
Marie Antoinette
Alan and I attended the Bat Mitzvah of Leslie Fischman. Alan is a longtime friend of Dr. Ron Fischman. His wife, Cora, is sweet, too. We attended the event and it was quite the party. Upon our arrival home I had another card from my cousin, Marie Antoinette:
04/17/99
Dearest Michael,
I was browsing in a card shop recently and this one made me think of you. You have been such a sweetheart, keeping in close touch that I just want you to know how much that means to me. I’m truly grateful for getting to know a cousin like you. You're really a very special person.
May God Bless you always, Michael.
Love Your Cousin,
Marie Antoinette
On Sunday, April 18th we had a simple BBQ at home and our two guests included John Tuzziano and Herb Braha. John is a longtime friend of mine. Herb is a longtime friend of Alan’s. It made for some easy going, interesting conversation about many subjects like the latest movies, the world wide web and living life without stress.
Gloria (Alan’s mom) is having gum surgery on Tuesday, April 20th. It’s a reminder to ALL to not only take care of your teeth but pay attention to your gums, also. Floss and use Go-Betweens (those little brushes that fit into the grooves of your teeth that keep your gums healthy). If you gums bleed you are NOT doing a good job! Maybe after Gloria’s surgery she should find a little pond with greenery to recuperate. That would help for recovering nicely. “Give me a mountain meadow and you can have the metropolises of the world. I would rather chase butterflies on the Truckee meadows than compete for position and fees and fame in any city. Big frog in a little pond? That suits me.” --Charles McGlashan, the psychiatrist’s maternal great-grandfather, as read in the book THE NAZI AND THE PSYCHIATRIST by Jack El-Hai

A Fancy Experience
‘If you feel crappy, it’s because your brain is telling you that there’s a problem...negative emotions are a call to action. When you feel them, it’s because you’re supposed to DO SOMETHING. Happiness requires struggle. What are you willing to struggle for?’--Mark Manson, in his book THE SUBTLE ART OF NOT GIVING A FUCK My niece, Ashley, is still in 7th heaven from the NSYNC concert we attended at the Universal Studios Ampitheater on Friday, January 8, 1999. That was a cool surprise how Britney Spears was the opening the act as she seems to be growing more fans now. I informed Ashley of a summer UCLA program for high school students and encouraged her to do it. Sometimes you take a certain path, and it could change your life. I hope she decides to do it.
Gloria (Alan’s mom) continues to be involved with the Museum of Tolerance as a docent. She got us into see a Polish documentary in February. I like to go there. Actor Gregory Peck was in the audience the day we saw that documentary. That was a fantastic A-rated celebrity sighting who is, of course, famous for his portrayal as the attorney, Atticus Finch, in TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (1962). He won the Best Actor Oscar for it in 1963.
Our Aruba escape from February 24th through March 3rd was unforgettable (makes me think of the Nat King Cole song (released in 1951). And let’s not forget the duet version from 1991 with Nat and his daughter, Natalie (a favorite of mine). We need to do more Caribbean Island trips. I had no idea what I was missing. After Aruba we flew to New York City for a few nights and back to LA on March 7th. It’s great to reflect.
I’m also proud of Alan and myself for doing the L.A. Marathon on Sunday March 14th. That was one unforgettable achievement.
Now that Alan is in business with me, he had to take the Series 65 test on March 25th in Glendale, CA and he passed with flying colors.
A week ago, Alan and I saw a film called A WALK ON THE MOON, starring Diane Lane and Viggo Mortensen. It was a great drama-romance (just my kind of movie—besides psychological thrillers, of course, Ha-ha).
Given my flexible calendar now that I don’t have to report to the Charles Schwab & Co. Office from 8AM to 4PM I’m able to travel at the drop of a hat. Alan pulled another rabbit out of the hat with a plan to go to New York again from April 3rd thru April 10th.
Former coworker, Gloria Romero, send a PARIS postcard postmarked April 6th. I was envious, of course.
Hi! Michael, Well, I’m in PARIS. It’s beautiful, enjoying the historical sights and you can go everywhere on the METRO. Our apartment overlooks a cobblestone street. Food is great, also visiting Florence, Italy next week.
Love,
Gloria
Ashley sent me a fun-reading email. It looks like she won’t participate in the UCLA High School Students summer session 1999. That’s okay. I’m sure new opportunities will come her way. Here’s her email. I like how she spoke of the NSYNC songs:
While in NYC, Gloria and Jack, were with us and she wrote me this postcard from where we stayed (Plaza Athenee). I had sent the same postcard to my mom, so it was nice to receive one of my very own: 9:15AM, 4/10/99
Dearest Michael,
At breakfast, we were just critiquing DEATH OF A SALESMAN, the play (seen on April 8th). It has been a pleasure starting each day with you. From horse and carriage rides in Central Park to train rides on the subway it has been exciting sharing time with you. You have made my trip to NY “fab” and I look forward to many mor in many faraway lands! Love Always,
Gloria
We saw a couple of matinees. We saw the play called CLOSER (on Saturday April 3rd) at the Music Box Theater on Broadway. It was cool to see the actors Rupert Graves and Natasha Richardson on-stage. They’re both so very good at what they do. We also saw MARLENE (on Sunday April 4th at 2pm) at the CORT THEATER. It centered on Marlene Dietrich looking back on her life and glamourous image before giving a concert in Paris in 1969. The actress Sian Phillips played Marlene Dietrich. I had never heard of her before. I loved when she sang, I WISH YOU LOVE. I like getting a little dressed-up to go to the theater. It makes it more of a fancy experience.
In New York at all of the restaurants (near the restrooms) they have these postcards that you can take for free. I love it. I got my fair stash. I wrote to mom using these seven postcards:
And a postcard to Paloma, too, of course:
4-11-99
Dear Paloma,
Received your card from Le Chateau Feodal at Les Beaux de Provence. It sure is beautiful. It makes me want to go. Alan and I have 3 free nights at the PRINCE DE GALLES in Paris, but we have to use them by 12-31-1999, so we are trying to work out a trip which will include your area.
For my "30th" Birthday we are going to JAMAICA for a week 5/23--5/29, then to New York until 6/4.
Our Investment Management Firm (VERONA CAPITAL MANAGEMENT) is doing very well.
Please send my best regards to Alexandre and Jonathan.
Much Love,
Michael J Armijo

Hi Mom,
I’m back from New York as you already know. I would’ve sent you a card from NY (like I usually do) but I decided to wait until I got home to L.A. because I had these 2 magnets that I got for you while in NY. One magnet is from the Blue Water Grill, a restaurant I ate at. And of course, an NSYNC magnet. I thought that would be a real attention getter to one of your granddaughters.
We really had a great time. We took the subway all over the city. Gloria went with us a few times. Jack did too—until he pooped out and ha to take a taxi back to rest. I have to admit I got a little tired, too. We went to a few Broadway Shows.
The shows were CLOSER with Natasha Richardson about relationships; MARLENE about Marlene Dietrich, the German-born US Film Star. THE FABULOUS STORY EVER TOLD a gay-themed story about Adam and Steve (not Adam and Eve...Ha-ha) and Jane and Mabel (not Cain and Abel...Ha-ha), so you can imagine how funny it was.
All of these postcards I picked up in NY at various places—mostly restaurants. We really had a good time. The weather was good 95% of the time. The best part of the trip was how well the stock market did! We had a great week. The only thing that was missing while we were in NY was YOU! You’ll have to come with us. If all goes well with the condo you may be visiting NY more often anyway.
I just got through opening all of my mail and jeez...was there a lot. I’m pretty much caught up now. Alan and I are thinking we might go see a movie called EDTV. Lauren Freiman saw it and told us that we have to see it.
Oh, I forgot to mention that we also saw NOT ABOUT NIGHTINGALES, a Tennessee Williams play about prison life in the late 1930s. It was violent and very dramatic. We also saw a revival classic of DEATH OF A SALESMAN, starring Brian Dennehey which was a slice of American life in the late 1940s. He was fantastic. These two shows were quite good.
I guess we will be seeing you on April 30 for your visit here to L.A. Mark your calendar for Monday morning, May 17th when Alan and I fly in to go to the Schwab Annual Shareholders Meeting in San Francisco. Ok, talk to you soon.
Lots of Love,
Michael
We saw EDTV on Sunday, April 11th. It was quite different. To put it simply it was about a video store clerk named Ed (played by actor Matthe McConaughey) who agrees to have his life filmed by a camera crew for a television show. It looks like REALITY TV is coming to our future.

The DOW closed above 10,000 for the first time on April 2nd (the day after Alan’s 47th Birthday—more of a reason to celebrate), so that was reason enough to celebrate. It is Springtime 1999 and Alan, me, Gloria and Jack had a splendid dinner at IL FORNAIO in Beverly Hills for Alan’s April Fool’s Day Birthday. We had all the time in the world, chattering away. The waiter was kind enough to snap a photo of all of us.
Cousin Edna Garica-Maestas gave me an update letter:
March 31, 1999
Dear Michael,
I really enjoy your long letters. I’m sitting i my car writing for Rickie to get out of school. I try to get here early so I can get a good parking spot that faces Rickie’s school. This way I can see Rickie as his teacher walks his class out and I don’t have to get Consuelo out of the car in the nasty weather. Consuelo’s in the back seat having a great tie making sounds and faces. I just showed her one of my funny faces and she actually did a great job imitating it.
Politics...are you kidding? Ha-ha...I was secretary/treasurer for the Santa Fe Young Democrats a few moons ago and Vice President for the IBEW local union and that was an experience.
Starting my own business sounds and feels more like what I want to do. Congratulations to you! May God grant you success with your new business. Al of the Garcia’s--children of Augustin and Margarita have owned businesses at one time or another (except Beatrice). I guess it’s time for me to add on to my life. I’ve been thinking about it for quite some time.
Well Michael, I haven't been too successful writing this letter. I’ve stopped and started several times. Today is a busy day for me. I am going to Rickie’s school again this morning to observe four 1st grade classrooms or the teachers rather. I want to make a recommendation for aa 1st grade teacher for Rickie for the next school year. I’m taking pizza for his snack this afternoon. I’m also planning his birthday party for April 11th at Quiggy’s. It’s a place where they have indoor climbing equipment, laser tag, video games, redemption games, food, etc. It’s all for kids. It’s a little expensive but it relieves me of a lot of the preparation. I cut my hair about two months ago. It’s really short. I’m happy I did at least I don’t have to spend time that I don’t have, fiddling with it.
Talking about parties...any planning taking place for the Garcia reunion this year?
Mike took off a week from work and we went and spent the night in Ledoux, NM. It was great! We woke up to about 8 inches of snow. We have one of those $15 devices that keeps mice away and it works! One room, the most valuable one has a good-sized wood burning stove with oven and a water warming partition. We have a queen-sized futon, an antique kitchen trastero, a table, chest of doors, bed stand and a 5-gallon water igloo for drinking water. Every time I go, I have to take my vacuum cleaner so that I can sweep up cobwebs and dead flies. Ha-ha. Oh yeah, we have a port-a-potty for nighttime use and an outhouse that’s still functional! Now that I’m not working, I don’t have high hopes of fixing it up until we pay our primary house off in a year or so. By the way, my Michael is now working at the Santa Fe Community College as the Director of Counseling/Admissions. It wasn’t a promotion money-wise but it sure was environment-wise. Government employment is so political at the higher level. Anyway, he’s happy and as the saying goes if he’s happy, I’m happy! Michael, so that this letter doesn't reflect a diary with daily entries I am going to close it and send it off because Easter was actually named and celebrated after the Goddess of Fertility, so I’m not wishing you a Happy Easter (it’s too pagan and bunnies doesn't lay eggs anyway), but I am thankful for the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and I do thank him for such a great cousin like you.
Once again, thanks for caring enough to get the family together.
Love, Edna
The horrid event this week took place on April 4th in Littleton, Colorado at a place called Columbine High school. There was a gun down massacre, resulting in the loss of thirteen lives. I hate when hate crimes happen or any crimes for that matter. A Crazy Life
"Bookstores attract the right kind of folk."--Ayad Akhtar, HOMELAND ELEGIESThis week coincided with two artsy things that seem to tie in together. First, a very catchy song called LIVIN LA VIDA LOCA by Ricky Martin and a very crazy, futuristic sci fi film called THE MATRIX which was equally crazy, starring Keanu Reeves. I absolutely love both the song and the movie. I try not to live too much of a crazy life but sometimes crazy things cannot help but happen, right?

Dear Michael,
Next time you come to France you should see this place on a sunny day. It’s just gorgeous! And I’m not even talking about the food. I think about you! Regards to Alan.
Love,
Paloma, Alexandre
Barbara Reynolds had her birthday this week (March 23rd) and she sent a unique Fashion Designer, Vivienne Westwood (the blue shoes). The yellow shoes were from Mary Quant, an English/British designer who created them in the 1960s.

Alice and I got to the Palace of Legion of Honor on Saturday. There are 200 pieces from the V & A—just loved these shoes.
Are you still collecting postcards? They had a photo of TWIGGY riding a bike and some very old stuff. Hope all is well.
Love, Barbara
Cousin Patty Richfield wrote this week also from Philadelphia, reminding be to be thankful for good health:
3-29-1999
Dear Cuz, What a New Year beginning! Frist a prostate scare, then a hernia operation for my husband, Mark. He’s had a bad three months but he is better now.
It was good to hear from you as always. I am behind on all of my correspondence. I’ll write more later. Happy Easter!
Love,
Patty Richfield
He phoned her. "It's me," he said, "I just wanted to hear your voice." Then he didn't know what to say. And then he told her that he still loved her, he could never stop loving her, that he'd LOVE her until death.'--Marguerite Duras, THE LOVER
