LISTEN: How to Overcome Temptation, Part 85 (Onward Christian Soldiers Discipleship Class #209 with Daniel Whyte III)
Daniel Whyte IIIWelcome to the Onward Christian Soldiers Discipleship Class. I am Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society and pastor of Gospel Light House of Prayer International. The purpose of this time together is to teach young believers everything they need to know about their faith in Jesus Christ and provide them with the knowledge they need to live victorious Christian lives.
Our key Bible verse is 1 Corinthians 10:13:
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
— PRAYER —
Our lesson today is titled “How to Overcome Temptation, Part 85”
In this section of our Onward Christian Soldiers discipleship class, we are looking at specific temptations that are, as the Bible says, “common to man.” We are looking at what the Bible says about these sins so we can be aware of its dangers and so that we can hide Scripture in our hearts to use when we are tempted.
The sin that we are looking at today is the sin of “sloth.” This is the fourth sin in a list of 12 temptations that comes from two sources — one ancient and one modern. The first source is a list that was developed by monks in the early church called “the seven deadly sins” or the “cardinal sins.” The second source is a Barna survey from 2011 which tracked the top temptations Americans admitted to struggling with.
Today, we will be looking at Proverbs 22:33. (Remember, the text of this lesson is made available online after each class, so you can go to our website GLHOPI.com, click the “Onward Christian Soldiers” banner on the home page, and begin to learn these verses by heart throughout the week.)
Proverbs 22:33
The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.
This passage presents the slothful or lazy man as willing to use any excuse, even a fanciful one, as a means of avoiding work. In ancient Israel, a lion in the streets of a city may have been an unlikely possibility. But, that potential lion did not prevent thousands of others from getting up and going to work every day. Whether it is a lion, or some other excuse, the slothful person will use any means he can to avoid work.
However, the same dangers that work presents are presented even more so in consistent laziness. Yes, laziness, a lack of work, can kill you. The World Health Organization counts physical inactivity as the fourth largest global killer. Dr. Nick Knight, writing in The Independent, said, “Inactivity has its price tags. It is linked to the development of chronic health problems like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, depression, dementia and cancer.” He is not talking about an exercise regimen or vigorous physical work, but the basic human activity that occurs when one gets out of the bed, gets off the couch, and disciplines his mind and body to be productive throughout the day.”
Joseph Exell notes the following regarding the slothful man described in this passage:
“1. The sluggard’s tongue is not slothful. The man who is lazy is generally busy with his tongue. There are no people that have so much to say as those that have little to do.
“2. The sluggard’s imagination also is not idle. Laziness is a great lion-maker. He who does little dreams much. His imagination could create a whole menagerie of wild beasts that would hinder him from work.
“3. The sluggard takes great pains to escape from the pain of work. This slothful man had to use his inventive ability to get himself excused from doing his duty. It is an old proverb that lazy people generally go through the most trouble to keep from work.”
If you struggle with sloth or laziness, take this passage to heart and begin to use it the next time you face that temptation.

If you do not know Jesus Christ as your Saviour, John 3:16 states, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
The Bible also says in Romans 10:9 and 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved…. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and I want to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! I want to congratulate you on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light Society.com and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”. Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”
Until next time, May the Lord Bless You!

LISTEN: The Second Coming of Christ, Part 10 (Second Coming Chapel with Daniel Whyte III)
Honoring and giving glory to God and Jesus Christ, and remembering their servant Billy Graham by preaching an adaptation of one of his powerful messages.
Daniel Whyte IIITEXT: Matthew 24:1-8:
1 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.
2 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?
4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
——
One time I was watching a checker game between two friends of mine. Both of them were excellent checker players. I saw one of them make a move that I thought was very foolish. Then he made another foolish move, and I thought he was going to lose the game. He lost two pieces. But all of a sudden I saw the plan that he had: He jumped three of his opponent’s pieces, put his piece on king’s row, crowned him, came back, swept the board, and won the game.
In the history of the world, God said to Hitler, “Make your move.” “Mussolini, make yours.” “Napoleon, make yours.” “Stalin, make yours.” “Khrushchev, make yours.” “Devil [Satan, that arch enemy of mankind, that enemy of God], make your move.” And the devil today is making his great, grand move.
But, one day, God, by divine intervention and divine action in the coming of His Son, is going to snap history in two. The climactic point of history will be reached. God is going to crown Jesus King of kings and Lord of it all. There will be a coronation in the sky. What a moment that is going to be! All of those who believe will be there in our white robes, and the orchestras of heaven are going to play. The choirs are going to sing; the angels will furnish the music. What a moment that is going to be. The stars will sing together, and our ears will be attuned to the songs of the universe.
And then, as someone has written, the angels will fold their wings. They will sit down, and then we are going to sing. We’ll sing redemption’s grand theme song, “Saved, saved by the blood of the crucified One.” The angels can’t join us because they never knew the joy that our salvation brings.
There is one basic thing taught in the 24th and 25th chapters of Matthew that we must take heed to: Be ready! We are to be prepared for Jesus’ return. Jesus said, “Be ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.” I want to ask you today: Are you ready? If you are not ready to meet Christ, you better get ready today. You can get ready by repenting of your sins and receiving Christ. It’s a very simple act. It’s a sincere act by which you present yourself to Jesus Christ and say, “Lord, from this moment on I’m yours. I want to receive you, I want to follow you, I want to live for you. I want to be numbered among the blood-bought throng. I want to come to Your cross so that I can go to Your coronation.” Only those who have come to His cross where He died for sin are going to be able to go to His coronation up yonder and receive a crown. Will you come today? If so, take heed to the following:
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. LISTEN: How the Saints of God Should Pray, Part 2 (Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign, Day 481 since Jan. 20, 2017 / Day 848 since Jan. 1, 2016 with Daniel Whyte III)
Daniel Whyte IIITEXT: Matthew 6:9-13
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
———-
Yesterday, we began looking at the Lord’s Prayer — the model prayer that Jesus gave us upon which to build all of our prayers. First, we saw that, even though it is a prayer of brief size and a prayer that many are taught to memorize as children, this prayer is not designed for us to repeat over and over again. It is meant as a guide that is easy to remember as we pray about a vast number of things on a great number of different occasions.
The second thing we notice about The Lord’s Prayer is its structure or organization. It is basically six different petitions. Andrew Murray summarizes them as follows: “First, THY name, THY kingdom, THY will; then, give US, forgive US, lead US. This lesson is of more importance than we think. In true worship [and in true prayer], the Father must be first, the Father must be all. The sooner we learn to forget ourselves in the desire that He may be glorified, the richer will the blessing be that prayer brings to ourselves.”
The six segments of the Lord’s Prayer are as follows: First, there is praise and recognition of God. “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.” Second, there is the putting of God’s will before ours. “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.” Third, there is the request for our daily needs. “Give us this day our daily bread.” Fourth, there is the confession of sin and request for forgiveness. “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” Fifth, there is the request for deliverance from temptation and sin. “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” Sixth and finally, there is again praise and recognition of God and His sovereignty. “For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.”
All of our prayers can be modeled around this basic, six-point pattern. At times, it may appear to be too simplistic, but it is not. When Jesus says, “in this manner therefore pray ye,” He is speaking in the present imperative tense. This is a command calling for us to make prayer after this pattern the habit of our lives. Prayer is not to be an occasional occurrence, but a lifestyle. It is sometimes a difficult task, but by praying the Lord’s prayer, we can be successful and consistent in our prayer life.
Mary J. Helphinstine wrote:
I’m Jesus’ little trusting child,
I need Him every day,
To shield me from temptations wild—
I’ll not forget to pray.
I thank Him for His loving care,
That angels near me stay;
At evening shall ascend my prayer—
I’ll not forget to pray.
And every morn, before I start
Upon another day,
I’ll ask the Lord to keep my heart—
I’ll not forget to pray.
Or should some trial come apace
I’ll hasten then away,
To ask the Lord for strength and grace—
I’ll not forget to pray.

Daniel Whyte IIITEXT: Matthew 6:5-13
5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

———-
Robert Law said, “Prayer is a mighty instrument, not for getting man’s will done in heaven, but for getting God’s will done in earth.”
Warren Wiersbe said, “This prayer is known familiarly as “The Lord’s Prayer,” but “The Disciples’ Prayer” would be a more accurate title. Jesus did not give this prayer to us to be memorized and recited a given number of times. In fact, He gave this prayer to keep us from using vain repetitions. Jesus did not say, “Pray in these words.” He said, “Pray after this manner”; that is, “Use this prayer as a pattern, not as a substitute.”
As we have seen over the last few messages in this series, Jesus gave His disciples instructions on how to pray. Now, He is giving them an example of prayer. He is showing them how to pray. He says, “After this manner therefore pray ye…” The word “manner” means pattern or guide. Jesus is laying out the framework of prayer for the Christian. We can look at this prayer as a structure upon which we can build our own prayers. There is nothing wrong with praying this prayer by itself, however it was not intended to be a prayer that we recite ritualistically. Nor is it intended to be the only prayer that we pray. Charles Spurgeon said, “It seems to me that Christ gave [the Lord’s Prayer] as a model, whereby we are to fashion all our prayers, and I think we may use it to edification, and with great sincerity and earnestness, at certain times and seasons.”
The first thing we notice about this prayer is its size or length. Jesus did not give us a long prayer to pray nor did He give us a series of statements to repeat over and over again. It only takes a minute to pray the Lord’s prayer itself. The length of this prayer is in keeping with Jesus’ instructions in previous verses to not engage in vain repetition or mindless utterings in our prayers. Brother Lawrence wrote about the value of praying short prayers, and one of the benefits to praying short prayers is that it keeps our minds from wandering to other topics.

LISTEN: Diet, Disease, & Weight Loss, Part 1 (Overcoming the Acceptable Christian Sin of Gluttony #6 with Daniel Whyte III)
Welcome to the Overcoming the Acceptable Christian Sin of Gluttony podcast, a companion podcast to the Acceptable Christian Sin of Gluttony message series. The purpose of this podcast is to share with you, from a biblical perspective, the means by which we can combat and overcome the sin of gluttony and its outcome of obesity.
Daniel Whyte IIIOur passage from the Word of God today is Numbers 11:10-13 which reads: “Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent: and the anger of the Lord was kindled greatly; Moses also was displeased. And Moses said unto the Lord, Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me? Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers? Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh, that we may eat.”
Now, let’s look at gluttony and its effects in the news: According to The American Heart Association, “Heart disease kills about 600,000 people every year in the United States. And obesity is a major risk factor for heart disease. Large studies show that the risk for heart disease increases with obesity. People with severe obesity are at a higher risk for coronary artery disease, and thus have a higher risk of a heart attack.”
In this podcast, we are going through the book, The RAVE Diet and Lifestyle: The Natural Foods Diet With Meals that Heal, by Mike Anderson. He writes in Chapter 1: Diet, Disease, & Weight Loss:
The dairy industry is famous for sponsoring “scientific” studies showing the benefits of consuming their products due to the calcium content. And because the dairy lobby has many politicians in their pocket, our official calcium requirements are now absurdly high. Surprisingly, no one has ever thought to ask why we need ever-higher amounts of calcium in our diet when there has never been a single recorded instance of calcium deficiency of a dietary origin in the history of the human race!
Despite this fact, the dairy industry – backed by the authority of the USDA – has scared the wits out of women who think the calcium in dairy products will somehow magically bind to their bones, make them strong and prevent osteoporosis.
What the dairy industry does is simply hire a bunch of blind scientists and instructs them to focus on a single ingredient in order to turn an incredibly bad food (high levels of sodium, cholesterol, saturated fat and animal protein) into a good food. Recently, they funded a study which made the ridiculous claim that calcium was the key to losing weight!
We could go down the list of so-called scientific studies which purport to show the benefits of a single ingredient in a food (e.g., the “good fat” in vegetable oils, the “good fat” in fish, flavonoids in chocolate candy bars), while ignoring the package of bad ingredients these good ingredients come in. These studies, of course, are nothing but marketing tools employed by food industries working on a gullible public trying their best to find a healthy meal somewhere in America.
In the meantime, Americans get sicker from eating bad foods the scientific community has declared “healthy.” Of course, the sicker they get from eating bad foods, the more it feeds into a bottom-feeder – the pharmaceutical industry. In an effort to counteract a bad diet, we end up taking medicines to treat symptoms of diseases that are the result of eating bad foods – primarily because a bunch of functionally blind scientists told us these bad foods were good for us.
— PRAYER —
Now, in this series, as we focus on overcoming the sin of gluttony, and managing our bodies as God intended, we must not lose sight of the most important part of our existence — our spiritual life. Even those of you who are fit, who eat right, and who exercise regularly must still address the condition of your soul. You may keep your body in perfect condition till the day you die, but you will still die — we all will, and the only thing that will matter is the condition of your soul. Is your soul in shape? Is your soul in right standing with God?
The only way to make sure of that is to trust Jesus Christ as your Savior from sin and the consequences of sin. He alone can save your soul, put you in right standing with God, and ensure that you do not perish in Hell. Now, if you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, here is how you can trust Him today.
I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! Daniel Whyte IIITEXT: Philippians 1:1-6
1 Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:
2 Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
3 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,
4 Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy,
5 For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now;
6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:
— PRAYER —
We are in a series of messages titled “Praying Through the Bible: A Series on Every Passage and Verse Regarding Prayer in the Bible.” The purpose of this series is to encourage and motivate you to pray to the God of the Bible. We highlighted each of these over 500 verses and passages in the Prayer Motivator Devotional Bible. So far, we have completed 301 messages in this series.
This is message #302 titled, The Power of Remembering, Thanksgiving, and Praying Part 1 .
In our passage for today, we find Paul, imprisoned in Rome, writing to a church he started in Philippi. Philippi was the first city Paul visited after he had the dream of a Macedonian man saying, “Come over and help us.” Philippi was the first European city to receive the Gospel message. Paul greets the saints, the bishops, and the deacons of this body, and then proceeds to express his gratitude to God for them.
Dr. John Walvoord writes in his commentary, “Philippians is essentially a thanksgiving for the work of grace in Philippi as well as for the believers’ thoughtfulness in sending Epaphroditus with a gift to Paul in Rome. With a full heart, Paul writes, ‘I thank my God upon every remembrance of you.’ Paul’s heart was filled to overflowing as he reviewed in his mind how God had worked in Philippi in leading them to salvation, in forming the church, his own sensational deliverance from jail at Philippi, the subsequent development of the church, and their kindness to him on many occasions. The Philippians were constantly in his prayers, and were an unfailing source of joy and satisfaction.”
It is easy for us to see the negativity in others. It is easy for us to have an ungrateful spirit toward others. Paul, in his imprisoned state, could have begrudged the freedom of the Philippians. But, when Paul thought about his fellow believers, he chose to be thankful for them. He looked on the bright side. He recognized the good they had done for him. But, more importantly, he recognized and rejoiced in the good that God was doing in these young believers.

Now, if you are with us today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, your first prayer needs to be what we call the Sinner’s Prayer. First, please understand that you are a sinner, just as I am, and that you have broken God’s laws. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again.
Congratulations on trusting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. You have done the most important thing in life. Daniel Whyte IIITEXT: Matthew 6:5-8
———-
If we take prayer to God seriously, we will not engage in some of the foolish behavior of heathens and hypocrites when we approach Him. We will not pray to be seen and rewarded of men; instead, we will pray in secret because God sees and hears in secret but rewards openly. Also, we will not engage in vain repetition when we pray. The main reason why we ought not to play games with prayer is because our Heavenly Father already knows what we intend to ask for. Yet, He still requires us to ask.
Although, God wishes to come to our aid — Isaiah 30:18 says, “the LORD will wait that he may be gracious unto you and have mercy upon you” — He will wait until we ask Him specifically. Sometimes He wants us to realize that we are at the end of our feeble strength and meager resources before He intervenes. This is so that we will learn to depend wholly on Him. When we cry out to Him in prayer, He wants us to do so with complete dependence on Him as His children.
Praying to God in light of His omniscience and sovereignty also helps us to examine our requests in the light of His will. Because God already knows the deepest desires of our hearts, we can re-evaluate our wishes and truly see if they are in alignment with God’s will. Thus, we can begin to pray more effectively and we will be more careful stewards of provisions from God which He supplies in answer to our prayers.
It is often said that prayer changes things. That is true. But prayer does not change God or God’s will. The main change brought about by prayer is a change in us. Through prayer to a sovereign, omniscient God who already knows our needs, we grow in humility and faith, and we become better prepared for the changes that will be brought about in our circumstances and the course of events in our lives and the lives of others.
Isaac Watts wrote:
Hear me, O God, nor hide Thy face;
But answer, lest I die;
Hast Thou not built a throne of grace
To hear when sinners cry?
Thou wilt arise and show Thy face,
Nor will my Lord delay
Beyond the appointed hour of grace,
That long-expected day.
He hears His saints, He knows their cry,
And by mysterious ways
Redeems the prisoners doomed to die,
And fills their tongues with praise.

Daniel Whyte IIITEXT: Matthew 6:5-8
———-
One of the reasons why we should not engage in vain repetition and other foolishness like praying to be seen when we pray is given to us in verse 8. Jesus says, “Be not ye therefore like unto them [the heathen]: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.” Of course, this begs the question: if God already knows what we need, why pray?
Well, first, Jesus shares this with us to remind us of God’s sovereignty. Nothing we do or say comes as a surprise to God. He already knows what we need to live our lives. When we pray, we ought not assume that we are informing God of what is going on in our lives. As David said in Psalm 139, “O lord… Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether.”
In fact, God knows our needs better than we know them. He is sovereign and omniscient. In the matter of prayer, this brings us to only one conclusion: when we pray, we are praying not for God’s sake, but for our sake. When we pray, we express our total dependence on Him for our needs and our wants. It is an act of humility for us to surrender to God and let Him know that we acknowledge His sovereignty in our lives. As Ray Pritchard said, “God doesn’t need our prayers, but we need to pray. We pray in order to express our complete dependence on our Heavenly Father. We pray to build our faith. We pray because he is God and we are not.”
When we realize that God already knows our needs and yet we go to Him and ask for them anyway, we submit ourselves to God’s divine plan for carrying out His will in our lives and in the universe. We cease trying to do things our way and God does things His way. Even though He knows what we are going to pray for before we come to Him, He has ordained that prayer is the way by which we get what we need and want.
In closing, allow me to share with you this poem titled “My Father Knows” by Sarepta Henry:
I know my heavenly Father knows
The storms that would my way oppose;
But He can drive the clouds away,
And turn the darkness into day.
I know my heavenly Father knows
The balm I need to soothe my woes;
And with His touch of love divine
He heals this wounded heart of mine.
I know my heavenly Father knows
How frail I am to meet my foes;
But He my cause will ever defend,
Uphold and keep me to the end.
I know my heavenly Father knows
The hour my journey here will close;
And may that hour, O faithful Guide,
Find me safe and sheltered by Thy side.

LISTEN: Overcoming the Acceptable Christian Sin of Gluttony #5 with Daniel Whyte III
Daniel Whyte IIIOur passage from the Word of God today is Exodus 16:3-5 which reads: “And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat? We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick: But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.”
Now, let’s look at gluttony and its effects in the news: According to ABC News, “Overweight women have a harder time getting pregnant. One Indian study of 300 morbidly obese women found that over 90 percent of them developed poly-cystic ovarian disease, a condition associated with infertility, over a three-year period. Dr. Marc Bessler, director of the Center for Weight Loss and Metabolic Surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital, said that many of his heavier patients experienced difficulty getting pregnant. And many infertility clinics don’t accept female patients with high body mass indexes given their diminished chances of conceiving. However, Bessler said some of his patients become pregnant just months after they had dropped a few pounds.”
In this podcast, we are going through the book, The RAVE Diet and Lifestyle: The Natural Foods Diet With Meals that Heal, by Mike Anderson. He writes in Chapter 1: Diet, Disease, & Weight Loss:
B.A. Stoll said, “Most people don’t let their children smoke, yet they regularly take them to fast-food restaurants and that’s just as risky, in terms of cancer, as if they had bought them a pack of Marlborough cigarettes.”
D.W. Cavanaugh, M.D., of Cornell University said, “There is only one major disease and that is malnutrition. All ailments and afflictions to which we may fall heir are directly traceable to this major disease.”
There is an old Indian legend in which six blind men come across an elephant. Having no idea what an elephant was, they moved in close and started to feel it. One touched its leg and described the elephant as a pillar. Another touched its tail and declared an elephant was a rope. The third touched its ear and said the elephant was like a big fan. And so on. The blind men then began to argue about what an elephant was, based on the empirical data they had collected – with each insisting he was correct. The problem, of course, was that none of the blind men could “see” the entire elephant, only parts of it.
Many of the problems that Americans have with understanding the relationship of diet to disease are analogous to this story. Unfortunately, the inability to see the whole picture is greatly reinforced by so-called “scientific” studies because they only look at specific parts of the entire picture.
Take alcoholic beverages, for example. Recently, there have been waves of studies purporting that wine is good for the heart. This is because these studies are focusing only on a small part of the wine, the antioxidants, antioxidants, which originally came from grapes. What such studies cannot “see” is the alcohol in the wine. When you step back and look at the whole wine beverage, including alcohol, wine not only harms the heart, but the brain, nervous system, liver and other organs – and generally devastates the entire body. Instead of saying that wine is good for the heart and ignoring what it does to the rest of the body, the “scientists” should have been saying this study confirms that the antioxidants found in grapes are good for the heart, without endorsing wine as a health beverage.
We have known that antioxidants are good for the heart for decades. And we have known that grapes are good for the body for centuries. What such “scientific” studies are doing is turning bad foods into good foods for the sole benefit of those who sell bad foods. (Don’t get me wrong. If you want to get tipsy or even drunk, there’s no better beverage than wine – just don’t call it a health drink!)
Of course, the “scientific” approach fits very nicely into the marketing plans of food industries and, in fact, virtually all of these “scientific” studies are funded by food industries. These days, if a product has even a tiny bit of good in it, food industries will hire a team of “experts” from a prestigious university to do a study specifically designed to turn an unhealthy product into a “healthy” product. They will then put out press releases and unleash their marketing team to “milk” as much news coverage from the study as they can get. The public then reads the news report and thinks, “Ah ha! Wine is good for me, after all!” and they run to the nearest liquor store and start drinking like fish.
After a “60 Minutes” show ran a story on the so-called French Paradox, which made the ridiculous claim that wine was responsible for the deceptively low rate of heart attacks in France, wine sales increased by a whopping 40 percent. What was lost in all the hoopla was the fact that the French Paradox is a mirage. The French have different methods of classifying deaths, which make it appear that deaths due to heart disease are lower in France than other Western nations. When statistical methods are standardized, however, it turns out the French die of heart disease at rates comparable to other Western nations. And regardless of how you view the statistics, heart disease is France’s number one killer, just as it is in other Western nations who eat comparable diets.
Amen.

Daniel Whyte IIITEXT: Matthew 6:5-8
———-
Jesus’ command to avoid vain repetition when doing the good work of prayer is an important reminder for us today. However, we must be on guard against carrying this command to an extreme. There is nothing wrong with a long prayer. There are some beautiful long prayers in the Bible. Solomon prayed a long public prayer at the dedication of the Temple. Nehemiah and Daniel also have notable, long prayers recorded in the Bible. And all of their prayers were heard by God. So, if you have a lot to pray about, by all means, pray about those things. Just make sure that you are praying sincerely and not engaging in mindless repetition.
Additionally, by this command, Jesus does not intend to discourage perseverance in prayer. That is, praying repeatedly about the same thing at different times until an answer is received. If you are praying for something that is in the will of God, there is nothing wrong with praying about it every day until you receive an answer from Him. Jesus Himself gave us two examples of this kind of persistence in prayer — one, with the widow who kept going to the unjust judge until she received justice in her case; and another, with the man who went to his neighbor’s house even though it was midnight to ask for what he needed.
In telling us not to use “vain repetitions” in our prayers, Jesus’ target is not prayer length or prayer frequency, but prayer motive. Prayer is not a matter of repetition but relationship. Constant repetition in prayer does not change God’s will one way or the other. We cannot manipulate Him like that. When we pray, God looks at our hearts just as much as He listens to our words. Perhaps, even more so. So, when you pray be concerned more about what your heart is saying than you are about the words being said. God understands “groanings which cannot be uttered.”
When Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, He emphasized two sentences again and again — “Lord, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.” It was the same or similar words repeated, however, there was more to Jesus’ prayer than just His words. There was the heaviness of His heart and spirit, the mental anguish over what He was about to do, the distress of soul so much so that He sweat great drops of blood. Jesus’ prayer came out of the heart of One who was utterly dependent on the Heavenly Father — not to be seen, not to be praised of men, not to force God’s hand or change God’s will — but to be heard in Heaven.
What do you intend for your prayers to accomplish? Do you want to be heard in Heaven? Do you want answers from God? Then pray sincerely without vain repetition so God can hear and answer your prayers.
John Newton write:
Our Lord, who knows full well
The heart of every saint;
Invites us, by a parable,
To pray and never faint.
He bows His gracious ear,
We never plead in vain;
Yet we must wait, till He appear,
And pray, and pray again.
So let us earnest be,
And never faint in prayer;
He loves our importunity,
And makes our cause His care.
