LISTEN: Watch, Pray, and Work, Part 5 (Second Coming Chapel with Daniel Whyte III)
Daniel Whyte IIITEXT: Mark 13:32-37
32 But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.
33 Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.
34 For the Son of Man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.
35 Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:
36 Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.
37 And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.
— PRAYER —
Watch, Pray, and Work, Part 5
While we are watching and praying in anticipation of Jesus’ Second Coming, we also ought to be working. In the church, today, we have much preparation but little productivity. There are many conferences, but little carrying out of the Great Commission. We have weekly services, but rarely are we found in service of our communities as servants to Christ. We say we are seeking revival, but we appear more excited going on retreats. We are often found in meetings but rarely found on mission. Frankly, if Christ came suddenly, many of us would be “found sleeping.”
Leonard Ravenhill put it this way: “We have many organizers, but few agonizers; many players and payers, few pray-ers; many singers, few clingers; lots of pastors, few wrestlers; many fears, few tears; much fashion, little passion; many interferers, few intercessors; many writers, but few fighters. Failing here, we fail everywhere.”
When Christ returns, He wants to find us “working.” Like the master of the house in His parable, Jesus has gone on a long journey. Just because He is away for a while does not mean that we ought to sit on our hands. Immediately after Jesus ascended into the Heavens, the disciples almost fell into this trap. They were standing on the Mount of Olives gazing up into Heaven, and angels had to come and tell them, “Get to work!” “Why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.”
Because Jesus is coming in the same manner in which He left, we ought to be busy in lieu of His return. Like the first disciples, we have received power; the Holy Ghost has come upon us; and we must be witnesses for Christ in our Jerusalems, our Judeas, our Samarias, and unto the uttermost part of the world. While on this earth, we must pick up our crosses. In his commentary on Mark, M. Eugene Boring, points out that, “Without any transition [from this parable], the passion story begins, as Jesus models and lives out the suffering predicted for his disciples. The story is bound together: the Son of Man who is to come on the clouds is the one who goes the way of the cross and calls his disciples to follow.”
Working for Jesus in the here and now means going where He leads us, doing what He tells us, and serving those whom He brings across our path. When He comes, may we be found watching, praying, and working.
William Fawcett wrote:
Jesus, may I work for Thee,
A mortal man from sin set free,
A mortal man with shortening days,
Permitted thus to work and praise?
To work for Thee, the Morning Star
That saw me lost, and from afar
Shed over my soul a light divine,
And comforted this heart of mine.
To work for Thee, my dearest friend,
On whom my every hope depends;
Who washed away my earthly shame,
And gave to me a new, best name.
Yes, blessèd Jesus, yes I may
Go work for Thee throughout this day,
And all the joy or good I crave,
Is but some fallen soul to save.
I’ll work for Thee, Thou blessèd One,
Eternal God, eternal Son,
And boast, but never boast in vain,
I’ll work for Him who once was slain.
Now, if you are not a believer in Jesus Christ, I urge you to trust in Him because He is coming again and you do not want to be left behind. Here is how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and the consequences of sin.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. LISTEN: The Power of Remembering, Thanksgiving, and Praying, Part 6 (Praying Through the Bible #307 with Daniel Whyte III)
Daniel Whyte IIITEXT: Philippians 1:1-10
1 Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:
2 Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
3 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,
4 Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy,
5 For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now;
6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:
7 Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace.
8 For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.
9 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;
10 That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ.
— PRAYER —
We are in a series of messages titled “Praying Through the Bible: A Series on Every Passage and Verse Regarding Prayer in the Bible.” The purpose of this series is to encourage and motivate you to pray to the God of the Bible. We highlighted each of these over 500 verses and passages in the Prayer Motivator Devotional Bible. So far, we have completed 306 messages in this series.
This is message #307 titled, The Power of Remembering, Thanksgiving, and Praying, Part 6.
In our last message we used Paul’s example of praying for the Philippians to show how we should love and pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ. Paul had a heart of true love and concern for the believers in Philippi. And he showed that heart by praying that: (1) their love for each other would “abound” or grow exponentially, (2) that their love for each other would be coupled with “knowledge” and spiritual growth, and (3) that their love for each other would be coupled with “judgment” or discernment.
Furthermore, in verse 10, we read that Paul prays that the believers may “approve things that are excellent.” Dr John Walvoord writes, “In his second petition, Paul logically proceeds from his prayer for love abounding in knowledge and in judgment to the corresponding quality of a discriminating sense of values expressed in the clause, ‘that ye may approve things that are excellent.’ The idea of approval comes from a word meaning ‘to examine carefully’ or ‘to test.’ The conclusion ‘that are excellent’ more literally means ‘to discriminate between things that are good and bad,’ or things that are opposed to each other. Spiritual discernment sorts all things out as good or bad in the sight of God determined by divine, rather than human, criteria. An accurate translation would be, ‘that ye may discriminate between things that differ.’ The same expression occurs in Romans 2:18 where it speaks of knowing God’s will and of being instructed out of the law. In a world which has lost its sense of value, a Christian must have unusual sensitivity to what really counts.”
Have you ever been confronted with making a decision that could lead you down one path or another? Have you ever struggled with knowing the right thing to do when presented with different options? The devil specializes in wrapping his ideas for us in appealing packages. If we listen too long to the voice of the tempter, the more confused we can become regarding what is right and wrong. The devil is eager to blur the lines of distinction. But, through prayer, we can ask for discernment between that which is good and evil.
Not only should we ask for discernment for ourselves, but we ought to ask for that discernment — that ability to test the spirits — for others as well. Our concern for fellow believers should prompt us to pray that they will be granted the discernment to avoid a dark path and the will to accept that which is excellent, especially when we have tried to warn them, but they have taken no heed. Let’s pray for the wisdom to discern between darkness and light for ourselves and others.
William Young wrote:
As deep darkness falls around
With shadows of the night,
We gather here with hymn and prayer,
To seek the eternal light.
Father in Heaven, to Thee are known
Our many hopes and fears,
Our heavy weight of mortal toil,
Our bitterness of tears.
We pray Thee for our absent ones,
Who have been with us here:
And in our secret heart we name
The distant and the dear.
For weary eyes, and aching hearts,
And feet that from Thee rove,
The sick, the poor, the tired, the fallen,
We pray Thee, God of love.
We bring to Thee our hopes and fears
And at Thy footstool lay;
And, Father, Thou who lovest all
Wilt hear us as we pray.

Now, if you are with us today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, your first prayer needs to be what we call the Sinner’s Prayer. First, please understand that you are a sinner, just as I am, and that you have broken God’s laws. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. 14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Henry Ward Beecher said, “Every man should have a fair-sized cemetery in which to bury the faults of his friends.”
Over the past few years, I have preached on this particular aspect of forgiveness — that we ought to forgive others if we want to be forgiven by God — at least three time sin the past few short years. People are often encouraged to forgive others, to “let it go,” as a way of freeing themselves from the burden of animosity, bitterness, and resentment toward others. But, as we look around at our society today, it seems that many are not getting the message.

We highlighted each of these over 500 verses and passages in the Prayer Motivator Devotional Bible. So far, we have completed 305 messages in this series.
This is message #306 titled, The Power of Remembering, Thanksgiving, and Praying, Part 5.
The Bible Knowledge Commentary says, “None of the believers was excluded from Paul’s prayers. Coming from a prisoner, this is especially significant. It was with joy that the apostle also besought God on their behalf. Paul’s hardships made him better, not bitter. They always do one or the other to a child of God.”
The Bible Knowledge Commentary also says, “The apostle assured the saints that he prayed regularly for them. Now here he reported what it was he prayed for. It was Paul’s prayer that the Philippians’ love for other believers would abound, run over as a cup or a river overflows. But that love should be more than sentimental; it should be knowledgeable and discerning. Having genuine spiritual knowledge (epignosis) of God and depth of insight into His ways enables Christians to love God and others more. Paul stated two purposes for his prayer. The first is a near purpose: to discern what is best; and the second is a remote one: to be pure and blameless until the day of Christ. The idea of testing is clearly in view in the Greek word dokimazō, translated “discern.” The testing is with a view to approving. The word was used in testing metals and coins, to determine whether they met the specified standards.
“Pure” is the translation of a Greek word used only here and in 2 Peter 3:1. It is eilikrineis, which comes from the words for “sun” and “to judge,” thus indicating purity that is tested by the light of the sun. Paul wanted his readers to be rightly related to God and in fellowship with Him. Paul also was concerned that their relationships with others be what God would have them to be. The word aproskopoi, translated “blameless,” also appears in 1 Corinthians 10:32 where the same writer urged, “Do not cause anyone to stumble.” Paul’s desire for his friends at Philippi ought to be the concern of all believers—to be morally pure, not causing others to stumble.”
From our time spent in this passage, we have seen how Paul sets an example of being a concerned prayer warrior for the people whose spiritual well-being is under his care. He led the Philippian believers to the Lord He established the church in their town; and now, even though he is in bonds, he is praying for them faithfully — with joy and remembrance.
Paul’s prayers for the Philippians are an extension of his shepherd’s heart for them. He writes, “How greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Christ.” For the Hebrews, the bowels were the seat of the emotions. Today, we would speak of having someone in our “hearts.” Paul’s heart for the Philippians was expressed through his prayers for them.
Dr. Warren Wiersbe said, “Paul found joy in his memories of the friends at Philippi and in his growing love for them. He also found joy in remembering them before the throne of grace in prayer. He carried the people in his heart in love. Perhaps the deepest Christian fellowship and joy we can experience in this life is at the throne of grace, praying with and for one another. [Paul’s prayer for the Philippians] is a prayer for maturity, and Paul began with love. After all, if our Christian love is what it ought to be, everything else should follow. He prayed that they might experience abounding love and discerning love. Christian love is not blind! The heart and mind work together so that we have discerning love and loving discernment.”
How often could we have been delivered from troublesome people and troubling situations if only we had the spirit of discernment in love? How many people do you know who could have been delivered from trouble if only they had discernment in love? That is something we ought to pray for for ourselves and for others. Perhaps the greatest service you can do for another believer is to pray for their spiritual growth and maturity. You don’t have to be there to instruct them or command them about. You can simply pray for them out of a heart of loving concern. And God will hear that prayer.
The church would be stronger today if we followed Paul’s example and prayed for each other with a heart of thanksgiving and gratitude instead of griping, complaining, criticizing, and gossiping. The strongest bond that we have with other believers is the bond forged in our hearts through prayer. As John Fawcett wrote:
Blest be the tie that binds
Our hearts in Christian love;
The fellowship of kindred minds
Is like to that above.
Before our Father’s throne,
We pour our ardent prayers;
Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one,
Our comforts, and our cares.
We share our mutual woes,
Our mutual burdens bear;
And often for each other flows
The sympathizing tear.
When we asunder part,
It gives us inward pain;
But we shall still be joined in heart,
And hope to meet again.

1 O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
2 O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever.
3 O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever.

Over the past few years, America has experienced some of its toughest days — politically, economically, socially, and especially spiritually. Church attendance and baptisms in many denominations are on the decline. Revival still tarries. More and more people are classifying themselves as having no religious beliefs. Christians who hold long-standing biblical positions, such as opposition to homosexuality and the importance of praying in Jesus’ name, have been criticized and discriminated against. The Supreme Court, with our president’s approval, made homosexual marriage legal in the United States. The global wave of terrorism has still not abated. In fact, we were hit at home harder this year than any year since 9/11, with attacks on both coasts — including one which became the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. Not to mention the killings and attempted killings of police and the wave of hostility that has come against law enforcement in this country. Also, the killing of black men by police has seized headlines again and again over the past few years, sparking protests, riots, and more violence, exposing the fact that America still has not transcended racism. Add to that the over 700 people who have been murdered in Chicago’s gang violence this year alone — an epidemic that seems to have no solution. In America today, millions of people remain unemployed and millions of families still have not recovered from the effects of the Great Recession. Perhaps, most depressingly, the nation was afflicted by a long presidential campaign season filled with scandal, lies, vitriol, and negativity, laying bare the discordant and divided status of these United States.
Considering all this, it is easy to see why many come into the holiday season feeling a bit down about the state of the Union. But, because the Christian’s hope is not of this world, we can rejoice on behalf of our country this Thanksgiving season. Yes, even with all that I have just named, I still thank God for America. In his first inaugural address, Abraham Lincoln said, “Intelligence, patriotism, and a firm reliance on Him who has never yet forsaken this favored land, are still necessary to adjust, in the best way, to all our present difficulty.”
In our passage today, we are reminded that being thankful is a choice. The Psalmist thrice summons us to thankfulness. “O give thanks unto the Lord… O give thanks unto the God of gods… O give thanks to the Lord of lords…” We are called to be thankful because of who God is not because of what is happening around us. But the Psalmist still gives us a reason to be thankful — “because his mercy endures forever.” Surely, it is accurate to say that God’s mercy has been extended to America. With all of our sin, our rebellion against Him, our idolatry, our crime, our violence, and our unwillingness to love and forgive each other, it is past time for God’s judgment. But, still, He shows us mercy, and the ship of state sails on.
So, why do I still thank God for America? Why should you thank God for America? Here are three reasons:
First, I still thank God for America because America is a land where the Gospel is still being preached clearly and without compromise. Psalm 33:12 says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD.” There may come a day when true, biblical preaching is driven underground and where real Christians are jailed or killed for preaching Christ and Him crucified. But, it is not this day. If you want to hear the Gospel in America, you can still hear it. If you want to preach the Gospel in America, you can still preach it. Romans 10:15 says, “How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!” I thank God that there are still bringers of glad tidings in America. I thank God for those preachers and churches who are uncompromising in their proclamation of the Gospel and biblical principles.
Second, I still thank God for America because America is a land of great provision and great opportunity. Psalm 107:8-9 reads, “Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.” God’s goodness is on rampant display throughout all of America. We are indeed the wealthiest nation on earth — and that is only by the grace and blessing of God. In the little town where I live, I can visit five grocery stores, three dollar stores, two drug stores, twenty or more restaurants, a dozen convenience stores — all within a five-minute drive from my house. On top of that, America is still a place where, if you have a dream and if you work hard in pursuing that dream, you can make a living and be successful in life. Many in this nation and around the world have their desires satisfied and their hunger filled because of the wonderful blessings of God on America. I still thank God for the provision, freedom, and opportunity that we have in this country.
Third, I still thank God for America because there are still good people in America — good people who love their neighbors and who just want to live and let live. Notice what Paul says in First Timothy 2:1: “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men.” Yes, that is God’s command: to give thanks for all men — all people — who live in our nation. There is an abundance of talk about how America is divided by race, religion, class, and education. But there are good white people, good black people, good Latinos, good Native Americans, and good Asians in America. There are good rich people and good poor people; good Millennials and good Baby Boomers. There are good Christians and good Jews. And, yes, there are good immigrants and good refugees who have come here seeking a better life. God, in has infinite sovereignty, has seen fit that we are all in this country together at this time in history. And we ought to give thanks for all who live in this great nation.
So, this Thanksgiving weekend and throughout this entire holiday season, as you gather with family and friends — some of whom you may have political, social, or religious disagreements — choose to be thankful for America and for the blessing that it is to live in this great nation under God.
In closing, the greatest blessing that any person can have in America or anywhere else in the world is a real relationship with Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the central figure of the Gospel message. He is God’s Son who came to earth to die on the cross for our sins so that we could be saved from sin, from the punishment of sin, and so that we could have a real relationship with God. If you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior, please listen as I share with you how you can receive the greatest blessing of all.
Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”
Amen.
If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! LISTEN: The Christian Response Briefing (07/01/18) with Daniel D.P. Whyte IV
This is The Christian Response Briefing. I’m Daniel Whyte IV. The Christian Response Briefing represents the perspective of the Christian community to the events happening in our perilous times. When great tragedies or historic events take place, the White House and other organizations often have a publicized response. In this briefing, we share a response to the same events based on God’s Word.
This past week, a tragic and unprecedented event took place that shocked our nation and the world. On Thursday, five employees of the Annapolis, MD-based Capital Gazette were killed when a gunman, who had previously vowed to kill one of the paper’s journalists, opened fire at the building. Several others were wounded. This country has seen its share of mass shootings, at schools, workplaces, theaters, and churches, but never before — and never in our wildest imaginations — have we seen such violence directed at the people who usually report on the tragedies that befall others.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of Rebecca Smith, John McNamara, Gerald Fischman, Wendi Winters, and Robert Hiaasen. We are praying for the comfort and healing of their co-workers and the Annapolis community.
The killer, Jarrod Ramos, had a long-running feud with The Gazette, stemming from a story the paper ran after he was sentenced to probation for stalking and harassing a woman he had attended high school with. According to USA Today, Ramos “regularly attacked the newspaper, its journalists, editors and the judge that presided over the case” online. He also “regularly posted about wanting members of the staff to kill themselves [and] hoping the paper would shut down.”
Ramos is an extreme and ultimately tragic example. However, his case, and the slaughter that took place at the Capital Gazette’s newsroom, sheds light on another of this week’s trending topics — the discussion of civility. Stemming from incidents such as the White House Press Secretary being refused service at a resturant, a California representative calling on government officials from the other side of the aisle to be confronted in public, and a conservative provocateur calling for journalists to be ‘gunned down on sight,’ dialogue about civility in public life was taking place across the internet, television, and radio this week.
According to Merriam-Webster, civility is defined as “civilized conduct, especially courtesy or politeness.” Civility is tightly interwoven in the fabric of a successful and sustainable democracy. In a country of over 300 million diverse people, a great number of disagreements — some of them extremely vehement — will take place. However, we can disagree and still get along. But when we cease to be respectful and tolerant of others no matter what they believe, we take a pickaxe to the bedrock of our communities.
The Bible has a lot to say about civility — treating others with respect and understanding no matter how we disagree with them. Romans 12:10 says, “Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another.” Ephesians 4:29 cautions us against speaking words that harm and tear down: “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.” And James, of course, strikes at the heart of the issue with this brief but bold command: “Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.”
If society as a whole doesn’t heed the calls to civility from the Bible and from common sense, we will continue to tear each other down and tear this country apart. Sadly, we will see more incidents like the Capitol Gazette shooting, where violent words lead to violent actions with deadly consequences.
Thank you for listening to the Christian Response Briefing. I am Daniel Whyte IV.
LISTEN: How the Saints of God Should Pray, Part 16 (Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign, Day 502 since Jan. 20, 2017 / Day 869 since Jan. 1, 2016 with Daniel Whyte III)
Daniel Whyte IIITEXT: Matthew 6:9-13
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
—–
The final petition of the Lord’s prayer reveals the underlying purpose of all of our prayers. Why do we pray in the manner that we do? “For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.” Ultimately, prayer is and ought to be for God’s kingdom, God’s power, and God’s glory. When we pray for the sake of God’s kingdom, we are expressing our desire for the kingdom to be built up and strengthened in our lives and in the lives of all believers. We are also expressing our desire to see the second coming of Christ and the millennial period when the physical, political kingdom of God will be manifest on earth.
Now, let’s look at why we pray for the sake of God’s power. The Greek word translated “power” is dunamis. It means strength, ability, or influence; power for performing miracles; or power and resources arising from numbers. We serve a God who is mighty and powerful. When the Bible speaks of Jesus’ “mighty works” — His miracles — this is the word that is used. When we pray, we ought to be expecting God’s power to be manifested in our lives and in the lives of those around us. There are many things that we cannot do on your own; there are situations that we cannot resolve in our own strength. We need God’s power. And prayer calls down the power of God. There is an old saying that used to be repeated a lot among Christians: “Little prayer, little power. Much prayer, much power. No prayer, no power.”
Finally, why do we pray for the sake of God’s glory? The Greek word translated “glory” is doxa from which we get our word doxology. This word means splendour, brightness, or majesty. Strong’s Lexicon states that it is ‘the kingly majesty which belongs to God as supreme ruler as well as the kingly majesty of the Messiah.’ All of the attributes of God — His omniscience, His omnipresence, His omnipotence — are a part of His glory. Everything that God has created — the earth, the sky, the sun, moon, and stars; people, plants, and animals; mountains, plains, and oceans — all of it is a part of His glory. Not only that, but everything God does — the miracles He performs, the prayers He answers, the sacrifice He made of His Son — is a part of His glory. When we pray, we are inviting God to act in our lives and on our behalf, not solely for ourselves, but for His glory. In fact, the very act of prayer is a way of glorifying God.
John Piper said, “When we ask God for help, we know that he will give it for his name’s sake, not because we deserve it. His helping us highlights his riches. ‘God will supply every need according to his riches in glory.’ Jesus died to obtain all the help we need. So not just our praises, but also our petitions, become ways of glorifying God. They draw attention to his riches, not our rights.”
As John Newton wrote:
You are coming to your King,
Large petitions with you bring;
For his grace and power are such
None can ever ask too much.
As we begin and as we close our prayers, we ought to keep in mind that our ultimate focus ought not to be on our needs, wants, and desires, but on God’s kingdom, power, and glory. No request is too small for God. No petition is too insignificant. No prayer is not worth praying if you are praying for the sake of God’s kingdom, God’s power, and God’s glory.
——-
Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

LISTEN: How to Overcome Temptation, Part 86 (Onward Christian Soldiers #210 with Daniel Whyte III)
Daniel Whyte IIIWelcome to the Onward Christian Soldiers Discipleship Class. I am Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society and pastor of Gospel Light House of Prayer International. The purpose of this time together is to teach young believers everything they need to know about their faith in Jesus Christ and provide them with the knowledge they need to live victorious Christian lives.
Our key Bible verse is 1 Corinthians 10:13:
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
— PRAYER —
Our lesson today is titled “How to Overcome Temptation, Part 86”
In this section of our Onward Christian Soldiers discipleship class, we are looking at specific temptations that are, as the Bible says, “common to man.” We are looking at what the Bible says about these sins so we can be aware of its dangers and so that we can hide Scripture in our hearts to use when we are tempted.
The sin that we are looking at today is the sin of “sloth.” This is the fourth sin in a list of 12 temptations that comes from two sources — one ancient and one modern. The first source is a list that was developed by monks in the early church called “the seven deadly sins” or the “cardinal sins.” The second source is a Barna survey from 2011 which tracked the top temptations Americans admitted to struggling with.
Today, we will be looking at Proverbs 24:30-34. (Remember, the text of this lesson is made available online after each class, so you can go to our website GLHOPI.com, click the “Onward Christian Soldiers” banner on the home page, and begin to learn these verses by heart throughout the week.)
Proverbs 24:30-34
30 I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;
31 And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down.
32 Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction.
33 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
34 So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man.
This passage reveals the outcome of those who are persistently slothful or lazy. Their lives are held up as an example for others to take heed to. The writer of the passage is passing by the field of a slothful man. This person is also described as one who is “void of understanding.” There, at the property of the sluggard, the writer finds that it is overgrown with thorns and nettles. The fence is broken down. There is no fruit growing on the trees. His property is not prosperous.
The writer of this passage “saw, and considered it well.” He thought long and hard about what he observed. Then, he “received instruction” from the life of the slothful person. The instruction he received was this: “A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man.” The Hebrew word translated as “one that travelleth” or “traveler” means one who traverses or wanders; a vagrant, a vagabond. The “armed man” is a highwayman or robber; one who lies in wait to steal from others. Both the wanderer and the robber live in poverty because they are seen, in this passage, as unwilling to work honestly to obtain what they need.
Regarding the spiritual implications of this passage, Albert Barnes writes: “The field and the vineyard are more than the man’s earthly possessions. His neglect brings barrenness or desolation to the garden of the soul. The ‘thorns’ are evil habits that choke the good seed, and the ‘nettles’ are those that are actually hurtful and offensive to others. The ‘wall’ is the defense which laws and rules give to the inward life, and which the sluggard learns to disregard, and the ‘poverty’ is the loss of the true riches of the soul, tranquility, and peace, and righteousness.”
If you struggle with sloth or laziness, take this passage to heart and begin to use it the next time you face that temptation.

According to NPR, the streets of Annapolis filled on Friday as people gathered to mourn the loss of five Capital Gazette employees, who were gunned down in their newsroom on Thursday. The Maryland state flag was lowered to half-staff, and outside the building where the shooting took place, people left flowers, handwritten notes and American flags. Employees stood with their arms around each other, amid family members, friends and supporters. The killer, Jarrod Ramos, who has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder, had reportedly sown a “legal oath” to kill a Gazette writer years earlier.
According to the Associated Press, thousands of protesters across America, moved by accounts of children separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border, marched Saturday — in major cities and tiny towns — to demand President Donald Trump’s administration reunite the divided families. More than 700 planned marches drew hundreds of thousands of people across the country, from immigrant-friendly cities like Los Angeles and New York to conservative Appalachia and Wyoming under the banner. “Families Belong Together.”
According to our newsdesk, The Jude 3 Project is hosting a very interesting event this September, pitting “African American voices trained at conservative evangelical seminaries or divinity schools with African American voices trained at mainline seminaries or divinity schools” to discuss controversial topics related to the Bible and Christianity. The first national Courageous Conversations conference will take place in Chicago, IL at the Historic Progressive Baptist Church on Monday, September 3, 2018. Two dozen scholars and pastors will be on hand to discuss the authority of Scripture, the Pauline epistles, Gospel preaching, justice, and sexuality.
According to Religion News Service, Multiracial churches are on the rise and so is the percentage of U.S. congregants who attend them. A study in the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion has found that the percentage of U.S. multiracial congregations almost doubled between 1998 and 2012, from 6.4 percent to 12 percent. In the same period, the percentage of U.S. congregants attending an interracial church has reached almost one in five, advancing from 12.7 percent to 18.3 percent. Co-authors Kevin Dougherty, a sociology professor at Baylor University, and Michael Emerson, provost at North Park University, defined multiracial congregations as ones in which no single racial or ethnic group constitutes more than 80 percent of the people in the pews.
According to the Associated Press, an autopsy report released Thursday reveals that the gunman responsible for the deadliest mass shooting in Texas history died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and also had drugs in his system. Devin Kelley opened fire during church services on the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs last November, killing more than two dozen people. He was later found dead in a vehicle after he was shot and chased by two men who heard the gunfire at the church.
According to the Christian Post, The woman who came forward claiming that Paige Patterson mishandled reporting her alleged rape in 2003 says she’s forgiven him, but also claims that a letter she wrote back then, released by Patterson’s assistant’s wife in May, was “edited.” In a blog post titled “Redeeming Love”, Megan Lively of North Carolina said that although news has died down about the recent controversy that engulfed the Fort Worth, Texas-based seminary, Patterson and his supporters, she wanted to share a few things about the next chapter of her life. She wrote, “To the Pattersons and the Colters, I forgive you. My relationship with God is broken if I choose to be unrepentant and unforgiving.
