LISTEN: Whyte House Family Devotions #365 (05/21/18): “An Answer to Problems,” by Billy Graham

Daniel Whyte IIIDaniel Whyte III

My family and I have had morning devotions, or family altar as some people call it, every day ever since my wife, Meriqua, and I were married 30 years ago. We have prayed and read the Bible together as well as other devotional books as a family, and it is the only reason why this family has stayed together, and the only reason why God has blessed our family and used our family in ministry all of these years. We read Ephesians 5 and 6 every morning as it relates to the role of each member of the family and how that we need to put on the whole armor of God to fight against the devil who is seeking to destroy our family and all Christian families, churches, and Christians. So, now after 30 years of doing this in our home, we are opening this up to others who don’t have a family to pray with, who don’t have a spouse, or who are single by choice, and to encourage all families who are still intact to go back to the family altar and have devotions together every morning. In these devotions, you may hear me deal with a temptation I’m facing in my life, you may hear me rebuke my wife about not doing what she should be doing, or you may hear me get on one of my children’s cases about something they’re doing. Don’t be shocked; this is real life.

RECITE: THE NEW NICENE CREED

We believe in one God,

the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

begotten from the Father before all ages,

God from God,

Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made;

of the same essence as the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven;

he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,

and was made human.

He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered, bled, died, and was buried.

The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures.

He was seen alive by Mary Magdalene and the other women, the disciples and over 500 other brethren;

He ascended to heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again with glory

to judge the living and the dead.

His kingdom will never end.

And we believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord, the giver of life.

He proceeds from the Father and the Son,

and with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified.

He spoke through the prophets.

We believe in one holy universal and apostolic church.

We affirm one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look forward to the resurrection of the dead,

and to life in the world to come. Amen.

EPHESIANS 6:14

14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

Stephen J. Cole writes in his commentary on this passage: “What is truth? Jesus Christ is the embodiment of God’s truth. John 1:14 states of Jesus, ‘And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.’ Jesus said, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.’ As we have seen, Jesus claimed that His reason for coming to this earth was to testify to the truth. He claimed to speak the truth. He prayed, ‘This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.’ So if we want to know the truth, we must come to know God through the One who was the embodiment of truth, Jesus Christ.”

DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE: Psalm 143:7-12

7 Hear me speedily, O Lord: my spirit faileth: hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.

8 Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.

9 Deliver me, O Lord, from mine enemies: I flee unto thee to hide me.

10 Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.

11 Quicken me, O Lord, for thy name’s sake: for thy righteousness’ sake bring my soul out of trouble.

12 And of thy mercy cut off mine enemies, and destroy all them that afflict my soul: for I am thy servant.

Regarding this passage, Matthew Henry writes: “David prays that God would be well pleased with him and let him know that he was so. He pleads the wretchedness of his case before God. But the night of distress and discouragement shall end in a morning of consolation and praise. He prays that he might be enlightened with the knowledge of God’s will; and this is the first work of the Spirit. A good man does not ask the way in which is the most pleasant walking, but what is the right way. Those who have the Lord for their God, have his Spirit for their Guide. And we should especially seek the destruction of our sins, our worst enemies, that we may be devotedly God’s servants.”

DEVOTIONAL READING: “An Answer to Problems,” by Billy Graham

Matthew 22:37-39 says, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God… Thou shalt love thy neighbor.”

“Here is the answer to the world’s problems today— ‘Thou shalt love the Lord thy God’ and ‘Thou shalt love thy fellowman.’ That teaching is not out of date; it is absolutely relevant today. It is the only way in which the problems of the world can be solved, whether the problems are those of individuals or of nations. If we love God with all our heart, we will have the capacity to love our neighbors. True love will find an outlet in service—not merely in singing hymns, attending church, or even in praying—but in trying our utmost to prove our love, by obeying the will of our heavenly Father.”

Now, if you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! I want to congratulate you on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light Society.com and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”. Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

Until next time, May the Lord Bless You!

LISTEN: How to Do Good Deeds, Part 9 (Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign, Day 468 since Jan. 20, 2017 / Day 835 since Jan. 1, 2016 with Daniel Whyte III)

Daniel Whyte IIIDaniel Whyte III

TEXT: Matthew 6:5-8

5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

———-

From this passage, we have seen the importance of praying in private and not praying to be seen. Why ought we to be committed to praying in secret with the intent of being seen and heard by God alone? Jesus Christ tells us why in the latter part of verse 6: “But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”

Now, it seems quite obvious to say that God sees what we are doing in secret. Of course He does. The point for us is: do we really believe that God sees us in secret, and that He is listening to our prayers offered in secret? Secret prayer is a matter of faith. If we are to be consistent and faithful in prayer, we must really believe that God sees us and hears us while we pray.

Another thing we must remember is that we are praying to God who is invisible. Jesus points this out by saying that the Father not only sees us in secret, but that He is “in secret” as well. The Pulpit Commentary states, “The thought here may be partly that to be unseen of men is a help to communion with Him who is also unseen by them, but especially that the manner of our actions ought to resemble that of our Father’s, who is himself unseen and works unseen.”

Many of us become concerned with who sees us carrying out our Christian service — be it praying, preaching, or ministering in some other way. But, we forget that God Himself does not always allow us to see Him or to know what He is doing. If you have been saved long enough, you have probably had an experience when you were worried or concerned about something, and after a while everything was resolved, and you realized that God had been working out your situation even though you could not see or sense that He was doing so. In a way, He was doing as Jesus describes in this verse — He is our Father in secret acting in secret on your behalf.

So, when you go into your secret place to pray — when you go into your closet, or your private place — don’t allow yourself to become discouraged by what may seem like the absence of God. Have faith that He is there with you in your private place of prayer.

——-

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

LISTEN: How to Overcome Temptation, Part 82 (Onward Christian Soldiers #206 with Daniel Whyte III)

Daniel Whyte IIIDaniel Whyte III

Welcome to the Onward Christian Soldiers Discipleship Class. I am Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society and pastor of Gospel Light House of Prayer International. The purpose of this time together is to teach young believers everything they need to know about their faith in Jesus Christ and provide them with the knowledge they need to live victorious Christian lives.

Our key Bible verse is 1 Corinthians 10:13:

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Our lesson today is titled “How to Overcome Temptation, Part 82”

In this section of our Onward Christian Soldiers discipleship class, we are looking at specific temptations that are, as the Bible says, “common to man.” We are looking at what the Bible says about these sins so we can be aware of its dangers and so that we can hide Scripture in our hearts to use when we are tempted.

The sin that we are looking at today is the sin of “sloth.” This is the fourth sin in a list of 12 temptations that comes from two sources — one ancient and one modern. The first source is a list that was developed by monks in the early church called “the seven deadly sins” or the “cardinal sins.” The second source is a Barna survey from 2011 which tracked the top temptations Americans admitted to struggling with.

Today, we will be looking at Proverbs 19:15. (Remember, the text of this lesson is made available online after each class, so you can go to our website GLHOPI.com, click the “Onward Christian Soldiers” banner on the home page, and begin to learn these verses by heart throughout the week.)

Proverbs 19:15

The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

This verse speaks to the results of a slothful attitude and slothful behavior.

Another book by the wise writer of Proverbs informs us that there is a time for every season. There is a season for work and a season for receiving the fruits of our labor. The slothful person does not want to work when it is time to work, yet wants to reap when harvest time comes. The slothful person has all kinds of excuses for not wanting to work. For the man who will not plow and plant in spring, he claims it’s too cold. But, when harvest time and winter come, he will be worse off, begging for that which he would not work for.

John Gill said, “The sluggard shall ask of those who have ploughed and sowed, and are now reaping and gathering at harvest time. But if a man will not plough and sow, he cannot expect to reap, nor should he be encouraged in begging. This holds good in spiritual things as well. Such who have been slothful and sluggish about their spiritual affairs, unconcerned for the grace of God, and indolent in the use of means or performance of duty, will ask when too late, as the foolish virgins asked oil of the wise virgins when the bridegroom came and as the rich man asked for water from Abraham when in hell.”

This verse also implies the importance of patience and waiting for results from our work. Many people are willing to work if they can see the results instantly or the next day. But, more often than not, we will not see the benefits of our labor for weeks, months, and even years. The farmer plants in spring time, but sees no crops until fall, nine months later. In this way, we understand that work is itself an act of faith. You are expending energy with no immediate benefit to yourself. Perhaps in order to overcome sloth, our prayer ought to be, “Lord, increase our faith.”

If you struggle with sloth or laziness, take this passage to heart and begin to use it the next time you face that temptation.

If you do not know Jesus Christ as your Saviour, John 3:16 states, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

The Bible also says in Romans 10:9 and 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved…. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. LISTEN: Whyte House Family Devotions #364 (05/20/18): “Complete Victory,” by Billy Graham

SING “DOXOLOGY”

Praise God from Whom all blessings flow

Praise Him, all creatures here below

Praise Him above, ye heavenly hosts

Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost

Amen

Billy Graham said, “We should begin the day with the Bible, and as it comes to a close let the Word speak its wisdom to our souls. Let it be the Staff of Life upon which our spirit is nourished. Let it be the Sword of the Spirit which cuts away the evil of our lives and fashions us in His image and likeness.”

——

PRAY “THE NEW COMMON PRAYER”

Almighty and most merciful Father; We have sinned, and strayed from Thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against Thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no peace and joy in us. But Thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare Thou us, O God, who confess our sins, our faults, and our failures. Restore those of us who confess our sins and repent; According to Thy promises declared unto us in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for His sake; That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life. To the glory of Thy holy Name. In Jesus Christ Name, Amen.

——

EPHESIANS 6:14

14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

Stephen J. Cole writes in his commentary on this passage: “What is truth? Truth is stable, firm, and reliable. The Hebrew word for truth was often used of things that had proved to be reliable. Thus it often refers to God’s faithfulness to His covenant promises. As the God of truth, we can put full confidence in His word. In the New Testament, Paul often uses truth to refer to the gospel message itself, which is reliable and must be trusted. For both Paul and Jesus, the truth often refers to correspondence between word and deed. John, who uses the words for truth in more than half of the New Testament occurrences, uses it ‘regularly in the sense of reality in contrast to falsehood or mere appearance.'”

DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE: Psalm 142:1-6

1 Hear my prayer, O Lord, give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness.

2 And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.

3 For the enemy hath persecuted my soul; he hath smitten my life down to the ground; he hath made me to dwell in darkness, as those that have been long dead.

4 Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is desolate.

5 I remember the days of old; I meditate on all thy works; I muse on the work of thy hands.

6 I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah.

Regarding this passage, Matthew Henry writes: “We have no righteousness of our own to plead, therefore we must plead God’s righteousness, and the word of promise which he has freely given us and caused us to hope in. David, before he prays for the removal of his trouble, prays for the pardon of his sin, and depends upon mercy alone for it. He bemoans the weight upon his mind from outward troubles. But he looks back, and remembers God’s former appearance for his afflicted people, and for him in particular. He looks round, and notices the works of God. The more we consider the power of God, the less we shall fear the face or force of man.”

DEVOTIONAL READING: “Complete Victory,” by Billy Graham

1 John 4:4 says, “Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

“Paul once wrote, ‘For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary the one to the other; so that ye can not do the things that ye would.’ This is the battle or the tension that is present in us to a greater or lesser degree. So, you see, the spiritual lag that you feel is explained in the Bible. That does not mean that you accept it as the way it should be. You should make all necessary preparations for this battle which the Bible says ‘is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces.’

“In Ephesians 6 we read that the Bible tells what preparation you should make. In the meantime, always remember that ‘where sin abounds, grace did much more abound.’ You can have complete victory! We are told to submit ourselves unto God, and the devil will flee from us. We are also promised that ‘sin shall not reign over us.’”

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

LISTEN: Whyte House Family Devotions: A Prayer for the Family, the Church, the Nation and the World #363 (Saturday, May 19, 2018): “Commitment and Purpose,” by Billy Graham

Billy Graham said, “Make it your goal to become more like Christ by refusing to let sin have its way, and pursuing instead that which is pure and good in the sight of God.”

——

RECITE: THE NEW APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

the Maker of Heaven and earth,

and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:

Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, dead, and buried;

He descended into hell.

The third day He arose again from the dead;

He was seen alive by Mary Magdalene and the other women,

the disciples, and over 500 other brethren;

He ascended into Heaven,

and sitteth on the Right Hand of God the Father Almighty;

from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy church;

the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins;

the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.

Amen.

EPHESIANS 6:14

14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

Stephen J. Cole writes in his commentary on this passage: “What is truth? Pilate asked Jesus this question, I think with a sneer in his voice. Jesus had said to him, ‘For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.’ Jesus’ assertion shows that there is an identifiable body of knowledge that may be labeled ‘the truth,’ and that Jesus Himself testified to it. While philosophers and theologians write volumes on the subject, I can only comment briefly.

“First, God is the truth. Webster defines truth as ‘conformity to fact or reality.’ Something is true if it is ‘conformable to an essential reality.’ Thus truth does not refer to our subjective perceptions of reality, but to what ‘really exists external to ourselves.’ Since God is the only essential reality in the universe, He is truth and the standard for all truth. Jesus referred to Him as ‘the only true God.’ If He is the only eternal, self-existent Being, then He is the truth, the only unchanging reality in the universe. He cannot lie.”

DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE: Psalm 142:1-7

I cried unto the Lord with my voice; with my voice unto the Lord did I make my supplication.

2 I poured out my complaint before him; I shewed before him my trouble.

3 When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path. In the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me.

4 I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.

5 I cried unto thee, O Lord: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.

6 Attend unto my cry; for I am brought very low: deliver me from my persecutors; for they are stronger than I.

7 Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name: the righteous shall compass me about; for thou shalt deal bountifully with me.

Regarding this passage, Matthew Henry writes: “There can be no situation so distressing or dangerous in which faith will not get comfort from God by prayer. We are apt to show our troubles too much to ourselves, poring upon them, which does us no service; whereas, by showing them to God, we might cast the cares upon him who careth for us, and thereby ease ourselves. Nor should we allow any complaint to ourselves or others, which we cannot make to God. When our spirits are overwhelmed by distress, and filled with discouragement; when we see snares laid for us on every side, while we walk in his way, we may reflect with comfort that the Lord knoweth our path.”

DEVOTIONAL READING: “Commitment and Purpose,” by Billy Graham

Romans 12:11-12 says, “Serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope…”

“Each generation becomes more addicted to the sedatives of life, to dull the pain of living. Oppressed by a sense of triviality and thwarted purpose, men find no great goal or commitment to draw them, and no inner stimulation to give meaning to their existence. Christ can save you from the bane of boredom. He waits to give you a fresh sense of direction and to take dissatisfaction out of your life. I talked recently with a man in my own community who was converted to faith in Christ. ‘I hadn’t known what to do with my leisure time,’ he told me, ‘but now I have a sense of commitment and purpose that I never knew before.’”

RECITE: THE NEW NICENE CREED

We believe in one God,

the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

begotten from the Father before all ages,

God from God,

Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made;

of the same essence as the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven;

he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,

and was made human.

He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered, bled, died, and was buried.

The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures.

He was seen alive by Mary Magdalene and the other women, the disciples and over 500 other brethren;

Amen.

——

EPHESIANS 6:12-13

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Stephen J. Cole writes in his commentary on this passage: “Adequate preparation is a major part of victory in spiritual warfare. Proverbs 24:10 states, ‘If you are slack in the day of distress, your strength is limited.’ Here, Paul tells us to take up God’s full armor so that we will be able to resist when the evil day hits, as surely it will. Then, being prepared, you will be able to stand firm. You do not need to learn any formulas or complicated steps to victory over the devil. The Bible is quite simple: James 4:7 says, ‘Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.’ First Peter 5:8-9 says, ‘Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your faith.’ By the way, we’re commanded to flee from sin, but to resist the devil. As Jesus showed us when He was tempted by Satan, one of the most effective ways to resist is to know and recite Scripture. And so one way to prepare yourself for battle in the evil day is to saturate your mind with God’s Word, reading it over and over and memorizing key verses to equip you for victory.”

DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE: Psalm 141:1-4

1 Lord, I cry unto thee: make haste unto me; give ear unto my voice, when I cry unto thee.

2 Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

3 Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.

4 Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practise wicked works with men that work iniquity: and let me not eat of their dainties.

Regarding this passage, Matthew Henry writes: “Those that know how to value God’s gracious presence, will be the more fervent in their prayers. When presented through the sacrifice and intercession of the Saviour, they will be as acceptable to God as the daily sacrifices and burnings of incense were of old. Prayer is a spiritual sacrifice, it is the offering up the soul and its best affections. Good men know the evil of tongue sins. When enemies are provoking, we are in danger of speaking unadvisedly. While we live in an evil world, and have such evil hearts, we have need to pray that we may neither be drawn nor driven to do any thing sinful.”

DEVOTIONAL READING: “Faith Produces Works,” by Billy Graham

Ephesians 6:7 says, “Doing service as to the Lord…”

“A true sacrament is not a mere creed, or ordinance, or form, but it is a life of service to God and to man. The most eloquent prayer is the prayer through hands that heal and bless. The highest form of worship is the worship of unselfish Christian service. The greatest form of praise is the sound of consecrated feet seeking out the lost and helpless.

“There must be a practical outworking of our faith here in this present world, or it will never endure the world to come. The Pharisees majored on show but minored on service. We need fewer words and more charitable works; less palaver and more pity; less repetition of creed and more compassion.”

LISTEN: Whyte House Family Devotions: A Prayer for the Family, the Church, the Nation and the World #361 (Thursday, May 17, 2018): “Faith Produces Works,” by Billy Graham

SING “DOXOLOGY”

Praise God from Whom all blessings flow

Praise Him, all creatures here below

Praise Him above, ye heavenly hosts

Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost

Amen

Billy Graham said, “God speaks to those who are prepared in their hearts to listen. Discern the voice from heaven above the noisy din of earth’s confusion.”

——

RECITE: THE NEW NICENE CREED

We believe in one God,

the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

begotten from the Father before all ages,

God from God,

Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made;

of the same essence as the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven;

he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,

and was made human.

He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered, bled, died, and was buried.

The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures.

He was seen alive by Mary Magdalene and the other women, the disciples and over 500 other brethren;

Amen.

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

LISTEN: How to Win at Spiritual Warfare Through Prayer, Part 23 (Praying Through the Bible #299 with Daniel Whyte III)

Daniel Whyte IIIDaniel Whyte III

TEXT: Ephesians 6:18-20

18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,

20 For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

We are in a series of messages titled “Praying Through the Bible: A Series on Every Passage and Verse Regarding Prayer in the Bible.” The purpose of this series is to encourage and motivate you to pray to the God of the Bible. We highlighted each of these over 500 verses and passages in the Prayer Motivator Devotional Bible. So far, we have completed 299 messages in this series.

This is message #299 titled, How to Win at Spiritual Warfare Through Prayer, Part 23.

Max Lucado said, “Our prayers may be awkward. Our attempts may be feeble. But since the power of prayer is in the one who hears it and not in the one who says it, our prayers do make a difference.”

As we have considered the types of prayer that we should employ in spiritual warfare, we have discussed: the prayer of faith, the prayer of agreement, the prayer of request or supplication, the prayer of intercession, the prayer of thanksgiving, the prayer of worship, the prayer of consecration, the private prayer, the silent prayer, the prayer of forgiveness, and the prayer of contemplation. Today, we are going to continue looking at another form of prayer — praying in the Spirit.

In our last message, we saw that praying in the Spirit is essentially an act of reliance upon God and a surrendering of our will to God in prayer. We cannot be striving with the Holy Spirit if we want to pray in the Spirit.

If we are to obey the command in Ephesians 6:18 to “pray with all prayer in the Spirit,” we must understand that praying in the Spirit is like having a divine prayer partner. When you think about what you are doing when you pray — talking to God whom you have never seen with your eyes, never heard with your ears, never touched with your hands, and couldn’t do any of those things if you tried — you will see why the Holy Spirit’s help in prayer is so essential. In the midst of a spiritual battle, it can be easy for the devil to discourage us from praying to the invisible God, because he wants to get us fighting flesh and blood instead. But if we are relying on the Holy Spirit to give us power in prayer, we can persevere in supplication because we are doing it “in the Spirit.”

By relying on the power of the Holy Spirit when we pray, we will gain a humble boldness when we make our requests before God. Hebrews 4:16 says, “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” When our intent is to do the will of God, there is no timidness in our prayers because we are simply expressing our heart’s desire before God — heart’s desires that He already knows. Martin Lloyd-Jones said, “Do not claim, do not demand, but let your requests be made known, let them come from your heart. God will understand. Pray urgently, plead, use all the arguments, use all the promises; but do not demand, do not claim. Never put yourself into the position of saying, ‘If we but do this, then that must happen.’ God is a sovereign Lord, and these things are beyond our understanding.”

Yes, praying in the Spirit also entails understanding that, sometimes, what we want will not come to pass. But, the Holy Spirit, as our helper, our companion, and our teacher, will lead us in understanding the purpose of God and accepting His will in time to come. Stop trying to pray in your own strength. Allow the Holy Spirit to help you pray. It will make all the difference in your spiritual life and in spiritual warfare.

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Now, if you are with us today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, your first prayer needs to be what we call the Sinner’s Prayer. First, please understand that you are a sinner, just as I am, and that you have broken God’s laws. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell.

Now this is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him.

In Jesus Christ’s Name, Amen.

Stephen J. Cole writes in his commentary on this passage: “Verse 13 repeats much of verses 10 & 11 to drive the point home. By ‘the evil day,’ Paul is not just referring to the fact that we live in an evil world that will go on being evil until Jesus returns. That is true, but Paul is referring to the fact that both corporately and individually we will face times of spiritual attack that are unusually intense. The word ‘struggle’ refers to a wrestling match, or a one-on-one contest of strength and endurance. Sometimes the entire church comes into an evil day, such as the current persecution against Christians in India or the attacks on believers in Muslim countries or under Communist regimes. But also, as individual Christians we face times of unusual attack. Perhaps your marriage is going through a difficult time and suddenly a very attractive and seductive coworker comes on the scene. It’s not a coincidence! It’s an attack of the enemy! Or, your family is in financial need when an opportunity to make some illegal easy money is dropped in your lap. Or, you’re struggling with depression when one of your friends tells you that he has some illegal drugs that will make you forget your troubles. This is ‘the evil day,’ or what John Owen referred to as ‘entering into temptation.'”

DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE: Psalm 140:8-13

8 Grant not, O Lord, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device; lest they exalt themselves. Selah.

9 As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.

10 Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again.

11 Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.

12 I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor.

13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.

Regarding this passage, Matthew Henry writes: “Believers may pray that God would not grant the desires of the wicked, nor further their evil devices. False accusers will bring mischief upon themselves, even the burning coals of Divine vengeance. And surely the righteous shall dwell in God’s presence, and give him thanks for evermore. This is true thanksgiving, even thanks-living: this use we should make of all our deliverances, we should serve God the more closely and cheerfully.”

DEVOTIONAL READING: “The Law,” by Billy Graham

Galatians 3:24 says, “Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.”

“When God gave the law, He knew that man was incapable of keeping it. Many persons are confused as to why God gave the law, if He knew man could not possibly keep it. The Bible teaches that the law was given as a mirror; I look into the law and see my spiritual condition. I see how far short I come, and this drives me to the cross of Christ for forgiveness. The Bible teaches that this is why Christ came—to redeem them that were under the law. Man could not keep the law; he was condemned by the law.”

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. LISTEN: Whyte House Family Devotions: A Prayer for the Family, the Church, the Nation and the World #359 (Tuesday, May 15, 2018): “Love Despite Ourselves,” by Billy Graham

SING “DOXOLOGY”

Praise God from Whom all blessings flow

Praise Him, all creatures here below

Praise Him above, ye heavenly hosts

Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost

Amen

Billy Graham said, “The greatest need in the world is the transformation of human nature. We need a new heart that will not have lust and greed and hate in it. We need a heart filled with love and peace and joy, and that is why Jesus came into the world.”

RECITE: THE NEW APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

the Maker of Heaven and earth,

and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:

Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, dead, and buried;

He descended into hell.

The third day He arose again from the dead;

He was seen alive by Mary Magdalene and the other women,

the disciples, and over 500 other brethren;

He ascended into Heaven,

and sitteth on the Right Hand of God the Father Almighty;

from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy church;

the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins;

the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.

Amen.

Stephen J. Cole writes in his commentary on this passage: “The devil and his demons are systematized. The terms used in verse 12 cannot be arranged in any definite rank or order, but they do seem to indicate an organized spiritual hierarchy of some sort. We know that Satan is the prince of the power of the air and that certain demons have jurisdiction over specific earthly kingdoms. A disorganized army is not a strong army. So Satan and his forces are organized against the Lord and His church. They are a force to be reckoned with.”

DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE: Psalm 140:4-7

4 Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.

5 The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for me. Selah.

6 I said unto the Lord, Thou art my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O Lord.

7 O God the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.

Regarding this passage, Matthew Henry writes: “The more danger appears, the more earnest we should be in prayer to God. All are safe whom the Lord protects. If he be for us, who can be against us? We should especially watch and pray, that the Lord would hold up our goings in his ways, that our footsteps slip not. God is as able to keep his people from secret fraud as from open force; and the experience we have had of his power and care, in dangers of one kind, may encourage us to depend upon him in other dangers.”

DEVOTIONAL READING: “Love Despite Ourselves,” by Billy Graham

Isaiah 64:6 says, “All our righteousnesses are as filthy rags…”

“The Bible teaches that all our righteousness—falling short of the divine standard as it does—is as filthy rags in the sight of God. There is absolutely no possibility of our manufacturing a righteousness, holiness, or goodness that will satisfy God. Even the best of us is impure to God. I remember one day when my wife was doing the washing. The clothes looked white and clean in the house, but when she hung them on the line they appeared soiled and dirty, in contrast to the fresh-fallen snow.

“Our own lives may seem at times to be morally good and decent; but in comparison to the holiness and the purity of God, we are defiled and filthy. In spite of our sins and moral uncleanness, God loves us. He decided to provide a righteousness for us. That is the reason that He gave His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross.”
