Thank you so much!
I’ve been writing The Good Counselor at full tilt throughout the last 3 months. The book went from around 50% completed over five years time, to 90% completed since February. I never wanted to jinx it, but it felt like I was handed Orpheus’s lyre with a simple message attached: write.
When I’ve had any amount of free time I’ve been glued to the manuscript. When I woke up this morning I literally rolled over, grabbed my phone, opened a doc, and started editing.
It’s good to be back. I haven’t felt this productive since I was writing the final chapters of Destroyer of Light.

Is this about plot or actual screen brightness?
it was about the plot but it works for either
I missed Aidon and his Aristi 🥺🥺
Also, I started rereading Receiver of Many again and I came across this sentence
“What Hecate’s doing isn’t all bad. If our ways ever die out, they might be the only ones left who honor them.
In my canon, Thanatos and his whole family are purists about the hieros gamos as purely chthonic/ouranic rites to be carried out by the gods alone, not with mortals, since it’s an act of divine creation and the most that mortals can create, in their opinion, are more mortals.
And I’m so happy that you love my books!! Hell, writing them was MY escape from shitty professional circumstances. I was in a dead end job that did everything is could to burn my soul out of my body, and started writing Receiver of Many because I didn’t want the creative part of me to slip away and get appropriate for writing endless ad copy.
Writing The Good Counselor has been my e-ticket to escape from currently shit global circumstances.
Hi Rachel! Huge fan and i cant wait until the new book comes out. I was just wondering how much the book will be on amazon kindle? Pre-order or regular. I need to budget myself rn but im definitely want to get it asap. Thank you so much!
Yay thank you!!
For The Good Counselor, I plan to make the ebook US$6.99 and the trade paperback US$19.99, if they will still let me price the books that way. I am keeping the book to under 125K words so it will fit in 500 pages or less like I did the first two books.
So in the US the ebook is about the price of a fancy latte. The trade paperback is the cost of a modest brunch omelette plus tax and tip.
It’s highly likely that I’ll still be allowed to price it that low.
Because here’s the reality for me:
There’s a minimum price set by the printer, and I usually put the paperback at the lowest allowable point at which I can still draw royalties internationally. As it stands, if an international TPB purchase is made, I make anywhere between $1 and $3 on it. This price cannot be differentiated from the US pricing unless I make it a different edition with a different ISBN. And only the big publishing houses do stuff like that, frankly.
I offer my books at the lower limit because I know that people want physical copies of my books and getting my book out to people with a traceable fucking ISBN number on it because absolutely fucking no one will know how many people read my books if they’re all pirated, you guys is more important to me that raking in a huge per-unit profit.
TL;DR:
$6.99 ebook$19.99 paperback*international pricing kinda sucksand piracy sucks harder
How big is Charon's boat? Like, how many shades can fit in one go?
I mentally modeled Charon’s boat after a much more modern boat, the Venetian gondola. Mostly I did this because there aren’t many surviving fishing boats or the like from three thousand-odd years ago. But I imagined the boat with a much lower front prow, and slightly wider than the modern gondola.
Shades in Chthonia have very little mass or form, as they are essentially ghosts, so literally hundreds could fit on a boat, if needed. The most material thing about them is their coins.
And because you least expect it, here’s a snippet from an upcoming chapter of The Good Counselor that I haven’t shared yet where shades are getting on the boat…

There are 24 chapters in this book and it stands at over 105,000 words. I am almost done. As soon as it’s finished, I’ll to post a preorder link on Kindle and commission a cover from Morgan, who did the first two covers.
I cannot believe it’s this close. Five years after publishing Destroyer of Light Six years after publishing Receiver of Many,
And you’re finally going to get to read the next book in the series:
