#Sinister Review
This movie has all the elements of a horror movie without being a horror movie. It’s got an eerie setting, (apparently) supernatural things happening, an unsettling score (probably the best part of the movie), and creepy children. But everything works completely independent of everything else. How best to explain. Ethan Hawke is the main character and he is completely engulfed in writing his true crime novel regarding a series of homicides committed between the 1960s and within the last few years. Until he dives in, nobody realizes these murders are connected. He moves in the house, amidst complaints from his children and wife and the local sheriff who’s read all his books and thinks he’s done more harm than good in telling each story in his prior books.
His son suffers from night terrors and does weird crap like fall asleep in boxes and pop out like an upside down jack-in-the-box. His daughter draws on the walls and says the little girl told her to do it. His wife complains. All this goes on and Hawke’s character just retreats into the world of the killer (who’s conveniently left reels of his crimes in the last murder house that were somehow never found).
I didn’t want an information dump, but something to connect everything so I didn’t feel like I’d just wasted an hour-and-a-half by movie’s end would have been good. I just had a general, unsatisfied feeling at the conclusion of this one despite some really good parts.

#Necon Books Best of 2012
I just got my e-copy of Necon’s Best of Flash Fiction antho today. I’d totally forgotten I’d entered their competition. I think it’s going to be on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. My flash fiction piece ‘Debit’ was accepted last year and I got a prompt response that I’d won a slot. Check this one out.
While you’re checking out books, check out some of mine too.

#TheWalkingDead Brothers in Arms
As you may remember in some of my prior posts, I made 2 predictions: that Merle would save Rick and Darryl would kill him. I was right on both accounts- well, kinda.
Ever since the meet with the Governor, Rick has been looking for someone to give him reason not to turn Michonne over. Hershel couldn’t do it, but who finally did? Merle. He saved Rick from descending to depths he’d already been. And perhaps even Merle didn’t know he couldn’t turn her over, but it was something a person like him would do.
Want another parallel? What happened in the second to last episode last season? That’s right, Shane died. But what’s that, you say? Shane was one of the good guys? No, Shane had lost his way. Shane was the gangrenous limb that needed to be cut out. He chose to cut himself out, rather than fester and cause more division. Just like Merle. And both men did it after a nod at redemption from a woman.
And who killed Merle? Well, the Governor, but Zombie Merle was finished off by Darryl. Close enough. And close enough to Rick killing his ‘brother’ Shane.
I’ll share my season finale picks in my next post, but one thing: don’t expect Glenn and Maggie to enjoy any nuptials anytime soon. There are shades of Darabont afoot (just watch The Mist to get an idea of what I mean) and on the verge of war, everyone is fair game.

#Zombie Fight Night – Kindle Review
I enjoyed this book. More than anything, I enjoyed the concept of it. In fact, I wish I’d come up with it first. That being said, it’s well-written and helped me fill in the nothing-else-to-do moments. It was good, not great.
I loved Fuchs description. I bought into Mick’s motivation and found myself rooting for him when he placed his bets. I found myself hooked on the fights themselves, believing who would win and being surprised when I was wrong and right.
The biggest problem with this book was the main bad guy’s motivation. I don’t get why Sterpanko does what he does, or rather, why he allows to happen what happens. Some things that happen in the fight scenes are a little clumsy, like a zombie being able to catch up to a werewolf, but that never elevated to the point of pulling me out the story.
I’ll definitely give more of AP Fuchs’ stuff a try.

Run, Teddy Bear, Run – Kindle Review
Yet again, Pudge does not disappoint. I’ve only read 2 other tales by him, but I’m a lifelong fan. Jimmy’s nonstop action and in your face dialog keeps me turning pages until I run out of book. With RTBR I needed more book.
He kept me on my toes. People died I thought would live, in any traditional horror story, some of these people would have made it. Jimmy kicks that convention in the nuts and takes a wizz in it. I think this was somewhere around 20,000 words and I read in 3 days. That’s with me having a full-time job, a family, and my own writing project. I’m a huge fan and I will be reading everything I can find of his.
