Oh, Come On...

Have you ever read a book that should have ended a long time ago, but won't quit?

In the final Lord of the Rings movie, I felt that way. I read a YA that was four books and could have easily been 2.

I'm listening to a final fight scene in this romance and it's brutal, and goes on and on and on. The heroine has a gun while the villain has sliced up the hero three times, shot him twice, nearly drowned him and her and she's saying..."I don't want to shoot you." ...as the villain is just about to kill her hero dead with this really deadly knife. She already shot him once. But of course he's the villain so bullet wounds and a dunk in the river don't have any effect on him.

She's an FBI agent, so it's not like she doesn't have the training and the right to take down the serial killer to protect a victim.

So why isn't she just shooting. Oh, maybe because it's his brother and forever, if the hero lives, he will resent that she killed his brother to save his life. That could be.

And it doesn't work. Sorry. But if someone's about to kill the person you can't live without, you don't hesitate, don't try to talk him out of the situation. And the hero doesn't act mamsy pamsy about how his brother has killed so many innocent people and tried to kill the love of his life and himself. You're pissed. And you want him stopped, even if it means deadly force, so he doesn't still kill you and the love of your life.

It's too overdone with we love the misguided, sick, sadistic, murderous brother, despite all that he's done. What about the people he mutilated? The families left behind? The terror he caused?

Whatever the reason, I'm ready to give up on the book.
thumbs down
The thumbs down reminds me of The Eagle, about a Roman soldier who returns to the northern reaches to locate the eagle where the wild Brits live and massacred the Roman legion, including his father, sent to conquer the area. The Romans were holding thumbs down that the gladiator should kill the slave who was a Brit in the arena.

But the Roman soldier got everyone to raise their thumbs to save the man's life.

So if I was the Roman soldier and saw the man about to kill his brother and the heroine, I'd say thumbs down on the story if she's going to do any more pleading with him to stand down.

Thumbs down on her. And thumbs down on the nearly dead brother for still moping about his brother. Sorry, in a situation like that, I would think he would be worrying about his lover and how she could still die at the hands of his crazed brother, not about whether he got to face a trial and was executed later.

And that's my quarter's worth. :)

But the good thing is? I've got another book to read... and another... and another. If one doesn't work, there's always another!!! :)

USA Today Happy Ever Afters Interview and Review of Dreaming of the Wolf

It's coming! Soon!!!

I have to smile at the mention of Happy Ever Afters, because when men ask me what I write about, I say romance, and then invariably the comment is made, "Happy ever afters." Thankfully, they smile, and don't say it in a demeaning way.

I smile broadly and admit it. I'm a sucker for happy ever afters. Always have been. Always will be.

Even when I write a little darker, my daughter says, "Mom, you always have rainbows in your stories. You can't write completely dark."

At first, I was taken aback. I thought I could write anything my heart desired. But then, I came to realize that's just me. And I see nothing wrong in that.

I was reading a book by an author I much admire, and I was truly disappointed because her writing had taken such a dark tone with no levity any longer. We read what we expect to read, so readers can expect to read the serious side of me, the adventurous, and the humorous. Because they come hand in hand.

My father and mother and me had a quirky sense of humor. We cried when my dad had his stroke, but on the other hand, while he was in the hospital, we made light of his condition--which helped him immensely in overcoming the scariness of his loss of control. We teased him about the blue pill the doctor had given him, that it wasn't to make him fight the depression, but truly was Viagra.

And he felt better for it. Not for the pill, but because we made him laugh about using Viagra at a time like that.

I don't want to feel down after I read a book. I don't want to cry and feel there was no hope for the characters, real or otherwise, in the story.

I want Happy Ever Afters. Life is too short to read only downers for me. Or to write them.

Give me a good romance that ends well, and I'm on top of the world.

High Winds and Storms!

Storms came in last night, so I couldn't get connected, and our internet was out at work all day.

So I'm running late on everything. Working on some interviews this morning, and still having trouble with emails and a connection. We have really high winds today. I'm not sure this will even post.

Hope your Friday is super! Time is just slipping away too fast!!!

Final Edits on A SEAL in Wolf's Clothing

Working on final edits to A SEAL in Wolf's Clothing. It's hot! :)

Meara, well, she just brings the bad boy out in Finn Emerson. What can I say???

Okay, so this is a teaser...remember, you get Jake in Dreaming of the Wolf first up. But just to whet your appetite, here's a little about Finn and Meara. :)

It was time to take charge of the situation—and Meara.

Finn closed the bedroom door without making a sound, then yanked off his clothes again, littering them all over the floor. Afterward, he mussed up the sheets and comforter, inhaling Meara's appealing, feminine scent. God, she was sexy, but under no circumstances did he want to tangle with her in that respect.

He figured the best means to get rid of the guy in the kitchen and protect her from the possible threat to her well-being, was to lay claim to her—in a pretend way, of course. She and he had butted heads enough in the past when he and Hunter had returned from missions that he wasn't going down that vine-twisted path. She was under the mistaken impression that it was he who had always talked Hunter into another mission after they had left the Navy. But half the time, Hunter had sought him out to conduct another privately contracted undercover operation.

Finn headed into the bathroom, started the shower, and entered the glassed-in stall. He figured any scenario would work to his advantage as he quickly soaped up, using her vanilla-scented bath soap—wondering just how enticing it would smell on her skin—rinsed off, and grabbed a towel. The two of them had to have heard him taking a shower. Either she would send Joe in to investigate, or they'd both check him out. In any event, they'd find her lover waiting for her in the bedroom—for better effect. If they didn't investigate, he'd quickly remedy that.

He walked out of the bathroom towel-drying his hair, naked, water droplets dribbling down his shoulders, his chest, and thighs, and found a slack-jawed Meara staring at his body. Which made his loins react as if on cue. Hell.

As beautiful as ever, her dark hair curled over her shoulders in a cascade of silk tresses, black denims fit her hips and legs in a seductive way, and a turquoise satin blouse accentuated pert breasts. He finally managed to pull his gaze away from her and consider the hulking black-haired man aiming a rifle at him, his eyes nearly as dark. Joe looked at home holding the rifle, as if he'd used one in military operations, and as short as his hair was, he did look like he was in the military. Which made Finn question who he really was. Although, if Joe had been the assassin, he would have made his move already.

"Meara," Finn said, in a deeply seductive way, his gaze shifting back to hers as if the armed man didn't worry him in the least, "I didn't expect you back from the airport so soon after seeing Hunter and Tessa off. You must have missed me." He gave an inviting wink, telling her just how much he'd enjoyed being with her.

He slipped the towel around his waist, as if it was an afterthought, but noted Meara had been taking her fill of his nakedness, her enticing lips still parted in surprise. Even though their kind shifted and it wasn't all that big a deal to be seen naked by others in a pack, he wasn't of her pack, and he wasn't shifting. Which he thought explained some of her reaction.

Then he turned his attention to Joe and said in a dark way that left no doubt that he was worried she was already throwing him over for someone else, "Who's he?"

***

Okay, so now, who wants to answer Finn???

Have a great Hump Day!

Terry

Why More Demons?

That's the problem with being a writer. Truly. I have all these demons in my head. Well, not really. But I can be minding my own business, and the next thing I know, a story is filling pages. I had this teen book halfway written, the scenes just coming to me for Demon Trouble Too. I wrote 16 pages on the flight out to see my son and daughter-in-law in Pensacola, and when I was there, I was revising and writing and having fun.

Because that's what creating stories is all about. Sweating through the bad stuff. Not my bad stuff, but their bad stuff. Trying to figure out a way that despite all that's going on, they can have a happily ever after.

Oh, sure, I know a lot of teen drama doesn't have. But sorry. When I was a teen, my dad was laid off with countless other space program employees. We struggled to keep our house until we could sell. I love happily ever afters. I want a happily ever after. So even if the stories are a little dark, as my daughter would say, there's always a rainbow.

What about you? Do you love the tear jerkers? Or are happily ever afters the preferred reading material for you?

Witches and warlocks hide their true identities from the rest of the human population, while three teens with demon heritage living with human families, become unlikely companions in a race against time to deal with a demon threat to humankind in their own quirky way.

Hunter is half human, half Matusa demon, fighting to keep the evil ones out of the human world. When he's poisoned, he sees the vision of a girl watching him, only she's not really all demon and not really all there. She offers to save his life, if he offers to protect her from one of his kind. But no lesser demon dictates terms to a Matusa.

Jared is a full Elantus demon, raised by humans, who's searching for his real parents. When Hunter saves his life, he vows his loyalty to him and designs a tracker device to locate demons entering the human world.

When Alana beats on Hunter's chest to get his heart beating again after he dies, twice, he knows the half demon is hot for him.

Often at odds, the three teens work together to stop the plans of a group of Matusa to take over the human race before it's too late.

I finally finished Demon Trouble Too, book 2 of the Demon Guardian series. Book 1 was The Trouble with Demons. They're both about teens who are part demon, or full demon, who take it upon themselves to stop summoners from bringing demons into the world. Sometimes it works out well. Sometimes not!

A Wolf and Breast Cancer Awareness

Thanks to Donna for sending this picture to me!

This is breast cancer awareness month. If I haven't mentioned what happened to my mother, she died from breast cancer. She'd had a mammogram that hadn't found any evidence of breast cancer. After self-examination a week later, she found a lump. I don't believe the lump would have grown that fast in that short of time. It wasn't a fast acting cancer like some can be. And she was able to have the breast removed and the lymph nodes were clear, plus she had the kind of cancer that worked well with medicine that kept any cancer from spreading if she'd had any left.

The medicine was great and she lived for 5 years cancer free. But after 5 years, the doctor was afraid it could cause some other cancer. So she was taken off the medicine. That year, the cancer spread, and within the year, it was in her liver and stomach and she died.

I believe she would have been fine for a number of years if she'd stayed on the medicine. But what do I know?

Both my manager and a coworker have breast cancer. It seems like it's a deadly epidemic.

The moral of the story is don't just rely on mammograms. Although now they give a digital image and it's much better, but still, self examination might find what a mammogram could miss.

Again, thanks to Donna for sharing with me the wolf who is our breast cancer awareness mascot for the month!

Get regular tests! And be aware!

:)

REVIEW: In the eighth in her Werewolf series, Spear gives us a love-at-first-sight romance with intense and almost immediate lovemaking that really works with her fascinating characters and exciting action-packed crime drama plot. She's also attracted the interest of a certain Jake Silver, who offers her his protection, which pleases her as she's used to taking care of herself.
