Today's Best Typo

Every time I try to sign an email "Hugs" (yes, I do that) I type Bugs instead. Maybe I'll just leave it next time.

Father's Day

Doug is a man of simple needs. We went to dog beach this morning, vegged out this afternoon, then started up a batch of beer (making, not drinking-- Doug's celebrated Scottish Ale), were going to make fish tacos but had really big margaritas and instead are ordering out from Gourmet Pizza and geeking out with a game of Civilization with Tim.

Father's Day/Beach Day

Zoe had her final round of shots yesterday and was cleared by the vet to go to Huntington Dog Beach with us for a Father's Day event. She loved it and stayed with the pack quite well! She also greeted other dogs and their owners very nicely. She's turning out to be a friendly little thing. Very pleased.

Famous Author Disses Famous Author

I hate to say it, but I agree with MT. Never could get through a Jane Austen book, try as I might. May have to turn in my Girl Card.

Mark Twain: "I haven't any right to criticize books, and I don't do it except when I hate them. I often want to criticize Jane Austen, but her books madden me so that I can't conceal my frenzy from the reader; and therefore I have to stop every time I begin. Every time I read 'Pride and Prejudice,' I want to dig her up and hit her over the skull with her own shin-bone."

Suspect from the "Every time I read" that this is a bit tongue-in-cheek.

Tiny beings

As I sat here, revising, I noticed a very tiny preying mantis on the edge of my computer. I got her on my finger and moved her out of the way on the table so I didn't accidentally crush her. She's taken up her position there, apparently waiting for something smaller than herself to come along. I purchased three mantis egg cases earlier this spring and it appears they're hatching!

Earlier I put the skittens' towel near their new burrow and came back later to find them moved out onto it. They prefer terry to concrete, even if their mom doesn't. Almost got a pic of her with the kittens, but she took off. They are growing quite friendly.

Casket of Souls Snippet!

It's been a while, hasn't it? Here you go!

Casket of Souls, copyright 2011 Lynn Flewelling. Do not reproduce or repost. Thank you!

Seregil turned over and propped himself against the bolsters. "Did you enjoy your party?"

"Of course I did, talí." Alec moved around to rest his head on Seregil's lean thigh. "I got Elsbet to dance, and I beat all the bakshi players in the dining room while you were cornered by those poets. I don't know why you encourage them. They're such a pack of leeches, fastening themselves to whoever they think will be their patron."

"Leeches in packs!" Seregil chuckled at the image, then held up a finger. "Must I remind you that they are leeches who love gossip and have loose tongues, especially when they're drinking?"

"Ah. And what did you learn tonight?"

"Let's see. Lady Lania is cuckolding her husband with two different lovers and no one knows whose child she's carrying. Duke Northus's wife ran away because he beat her once too often. Korathan's beautiful young Lord Byris gorges on sweets behind closed doors, and keeps his figure by tickling the back of his throat with a goose feather to bring them all up again. Lady Mora is sleeping with Lady Stania. The usual foolishness."

"I overheard something more interesting than that." Alec told him of the conversation between Malthus and Duke Oreus. "For a moment there, I thought they were going to take off their coats and go at it."

"The heat and the shortages are rubbing tempers raw. When Phoria comes back, things will calm down."

"That's not the first time I've heard someone grumbling against the 'faie." Alec tugged gently on a lock of Seregil's long hair. "You call attention to yourself, you know."

"We're 'faie, Alec," Seregil said, eyes fluttering shut. He wound his fingers in Alec's thick hair. "At least I am, as far as anyone knows, and obviously you're in my thrall. No one cares —" He yawned again. "—how long our hair is. And Phoria isn't happy with us anyway, after we cocked up that last job."

"Maybe not, but it's things like that that are dividing the nobles," Alec mused. "How can Phoria go out of her way to insult an ally like Aurënen when they're her greatest source of help now that Mycena is ravaged? And this talk of the queen not considering the treaty? Do you think that may have something to do with whatever it is ?? and ?? are up to?"

"Too soon to tell."

Alec grinned as he ran a finger over Seregil's chest, admiring the smooth pale skin. "That actor was certainly doing his best to charm you."

"Me and everyone else." Seregil looked down at him. "Did it bother you?"

"No, talí. He's just vain and wants your money."

"Our money. And you're right about that. Seems we're about to own a partial interest in a theater."

Skittens Relocate/Other Wildlife

Apparently Skit was not happy with my attention to her children, because she abruptly moved them deeper into the labyrinth that is our overpacked garage. However, the kittens are determined to socialize and come out of their hidden lair to visit, so the socializing continues.

Zoe, all legs and energy, continues to be a delight. I've been having her stay with me for meditation meetings, and last night for a raucous knitting party here at the house and she's becoming quite the charmer. Her favorite pastimes remain stealing shoes and yarn, and chewing on the long-suffering Emma. She and Jack play wildly and when she's big I fear for the furniture.

All played out:

This morning I also heard the loud calling of a hawk and discovered this young one up in the pines out back. Not sure what kind, but we have a lot of Red Tails around here. At least a foot all.

Oscar has left the building

Five years ago my son Tim went off to college, and like many college students, he left his cat behind with us "until I can take him." Naturally, that didn't happen for a long time—until today.

We're down to Emma, Jackson, Zoe, and Skit, Smokey, Patches, and Rufus. I'm already putting out feelers to find them good homes, though it will be another five weeks or so. Gad, they are cute!

Oscar, off to his new apartment home. Sadly, this was the best picture I could get of the uncooperative feline.

Skitten Home Movie

I love the 8mm app on my iPhone! All that's missing is a Christmas tree and footie pajamas!
