Not Happy With LJ
Folks, I'm not happy with LJ. It used to be great but something's happened and it's really screwed up and spammy. I'm not shutting this one down, and I will continue to post, at least for awhile, but I am starting a new one, The Great Cosmic Compost Heap, at Wordpress.com.

Joss Whedon's Questionable Statement
First of all, let me say that I have nothing against Joss Whedon. I think he's a brilliant guy and while not a fan, I've liked some of things he's done.
But this comment at his Comic Con panel was a bit jarring, when one fan noted all the strong lesbian characters that Whedon had written and asked if he'd ever consider writing for a strong out gay male character. (from After Elton http://www.afterelton.com/people/2011/07/joss-whedon-plans-on-writing-strong-gay-male-character)
"Yeah, totally." Whedon responded. "I've actually wanted to do a [comic] book, I have a particular one in mind. It's not on the front burner, but I do think it's about time. At some point you write enough lesbians and you begin to realize, 'This is just a guy! This isn't feminist. This is Cinemax!'"
Uhhhhhhhh. . . . Hmmmmmmmmm. How do I put this? What are you saying, Joss? That because one is having relations with another, one of them must by default be a guy? That she's just a guy with breasts? That . . ? I don't know where to go with this. Except that if it's how he really looks at it (in comedia veritas?) then, yeah, it is just Cinemax. Which really belittles what I thought he was doing. Which makes me sad. I really hope he was making a bad joke. I wonder how any lesbians in the audience who've admired and been inspired by his characters took it?
Do I think of my gay characters, or any good, well formed, skillfully written gay character as just a chick with a dick? Hell, no! Chicks with dicks and bros with breasts come out of Bad Writing by people who don't know what they are doing. I've read some of that shit. That's not how I ever felt about Whedon's lesbians or any of his characters.
I really hope it was just a bad joke.

Big Yawn
I moved the skittens into the guest bathroom a few days ago. Rufus and Smokey have found a favorite perch.
Heard from Patches' new owner. He's doing great!

Today's Work Tea
This morning I'm drinking American Tea Room's Romanoff, a lightly smoked Russian black spiked with blood orange. The pot was a gift from my good friend and fellow tea fan, Diana, who just moved away. :( I gave her a matching cup, since we both need the sentiment.

Nightrunner Cookery
I've been looking for things to do with my herbs, and my friend Diana told me about a rosemary syrup she'd had on ice cream that was very good. I did some hunting around and cobbled together a recipe, which went through four trials on the way. Thought you might like to try it. I'm including it in Casket of Souls, over poached pears. :-)
Rosemary Syrup
Combine 1 C. water and 1 C white sugar. Stir over heat until sugar dissolves.
Bruise and add the leaves of 4 good sized branches of fresh rosemary (about 1/4C). Simmer until the syrup reaches 230F on a candy thermometer. Strain and chill. Great on vanilla. Exceptional on chocolate!

American Tea Room Field Trip
We rounded off a romantic trip to LA (Eddie Izzard was amazing at the Hollywood Bowl) with a visit to one of my favorite haunts, The American Tea Room in Beverly Hills for a visit with the owners, tea, cakes, and of course, shopping. Came away with some interesting new teas, some old favorites, and a new 18 oz pot.
The photo doesn't do justice to the pretty irridescent glaze.
One of the new teas, a green rooiboos/fruit blend, is Martinique. Made a strong batch and mixed with TJ's Pomegranate Lemonade, garnished with a few slices of white nectarine from tonight's farmer's market. Excellent!

Headin' to LA
Today Doug and I are going into LA to see Eddie Izzard at the Bowl, then going to Little Tokyo tomorrow. Any suggestions for must see/do things, hidden treasures, etc.?

One Skitten Gone
Patches is the first to go. He found a loving home with one of my sangha members, someone I know and like. Still, it's hard breaking up the little family. I moved the skittens into the guest bathroom this morning, so that people could see them without going into my gross garage.
Oscar the Diabetic Cat has come home to the garage, however. He is an insomniac yowler and undiscriminating urinator. Tim simply couldn't handle him in his tiny apartment. So back he came (Oscar, not Tim), suitcase loaded with catnip, syringes, and insulin.
The up side is that Skit is a different cat with him around. She comes out, comes near me, and if not friendly, is a lot more bold.
So now we will be left with two eating, pooping, vet-bill-incurring cats who can't live with us in the house. *sigh* The next step is to trap and spay Skit.
