Town Near Amherst To Get Universal Fast Internet

On June 2, the people of Leverett, Massachusetts voted to spend $3.6 million to provide every home in their town with fast internet. Leverett has a population of about 2,000. It borders Amherst.


The vote was 462 to 90.


Every home in Leverett will have fast internet by 2014, a town spokesman said. This will increase the value of homes in Leverett, according to the town web site. Currently, 6 percent of homes in Leverett have no internet access and 23 percent have dial-up, according to the town w...

Simba Concert Is June 20

Simba will perform a public concert in Dummerston, Vermont, near Brattleboro, on June 20. The concert will be at the Grange hall at the corner of East-West and Middle roads. At a recent Simba concert, at least 100 people danced for hours. The band plays reggae and funk, among other kinds of music.

These photos show people swimming in a local river on May 27. With temperatures in the 80s and sunny skies, the water was cool and refreshing. These photos were taken from the same spot on the West river in Dummerston, Vermont, near Brattleboro. The Connecticut river is also safe for swimming, according to the New Hampshire health department, which tests the water. Private Prison May Be Built in NH Near Brattleboro

A private corporation in Tennessee wants to erect a prison in Hinsdale, New Hampshire that would lock about 1,600 people in cages. Hinsdale borders Brattleboro and the Massachusetts town of Northfield. The company, Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) and other private prison corporations, lobby for harsher drug laws so more people will be sent to prison for possession of marijuana, prostitution, and other “crimes.”

Civil Disobedience at Valley Nuke Set For July 1

Anti-nuclear activists are planning to risk arrest for non-violent civil disobedience at the entrance to the Vermont Yankee nuclear power reactor on July 1. They are asking the public to join them. Vermont Yankee is three miles from Massachusetts and a stone's throw from New Hampshire. It is owned by Entergy corporation of Louisiana.
