Ignatz

One from the vaults: this was the back cover to Zoot! #2 from Fantagraphics, waaaay back in 1992 (I think). Posted here today because (a) this is my blog and I can do whatever I like, and (b) I didn't have any better ideas.

My painting technique hasn't really improved in the last 20 years.

Conventions!

This weekend, I'll be attending my first convention of the year: the London Super Comic Con, at the Excel Centre. That one is a first for me, so I'm looking forward to seeing what it's like – do stop by for a chat if you're there; I'll be at Table A88, apart from when I'm doing the Doctor Who in Comics panel (Saturday 2pm-2:45pm) and a couple of signings at the Boom! Studios stand (Saturday 10:30am-11:30am and Sunday 10:30am-11:30am). Those interruptions aside, I'll be there all day for both days, sketching and selling books and artwork. (I will charge for full-figure drawings, but quick head sketches are always FREE FREE FREE!)

Then, next month, I'll be attending the Comiciade Festival in Aachen, Germany. This one's a new one for me too, but the shows I've attended in Germany in the past have always been great.

Then in June I'll be attending Heroes Con in Charlotte, North Carolina! I love Heroes Con, and I was sorry to miss it last year. As always, I've done a piece for their fundraising auction – rather pleased with this one.

And then, in September, the mighty SPX – more about which closer to the time. Suffice to say it never disappoints.

Hope to see some of you at one or more of these swanky shindigs!

Fred the Clown: Christmas Carols Your Mother Loved (And Everyone Else Hated)

The title of this one was stolen directly from The Goon Show, but I take full blame for the rest of it. Judging by the amount of typeset text, it looks like it was done in a hurry, which is probably true of 90% of these strips. But the title lettering is done by hand, so I must have at least started off with good intentions...

Fred the Clown: Fred the Con

Nice, uncomplicated mime strip (or "pantomime" if you're American; that word means something else in the UK). Not quite good enough for print - the gag could do with a bit more developing - but far from the worst cartoon I ever drew.

Fred the Clown: Signs Misleading

Once again, this is a revised version of the original web strip, with an added panel to ease the format change. I think it was probably tweaked for Tripwire; it was usually Tripwire.

Popeye vs a Pig

It occurs to me as I type this that I don't actually know what this one is for, except that IDW asked me nicely. Anyway, it's always a pleasure to draw the One-Eyed Sailor.
