Fred the Clown: 20th Century Blancmange

I redrew this strip as part of the long Fred story in Fred the Clown #4, The Shoulders of Giants. This is the original version. I think it probably benefited from the context of the longer piece.

Fred the Clown: Reasons To Be Cheerful Part 4

I did this one the week Ian Dury died. I like it a lot. I think I was nervous about including it in a collection because of its topical nature, but I think now I was maybe overthinking it a bit. It still holds up.

Also, Reasons to be Cheerful: Part 3 may well be the finest pop song ever written.

Fred the Clown: Lightning Escape Artist

I ended up recycling this strip in a Mugwhump the Great story, hence its exclusion from any Fred collections. Brian Ralph told me he uses it in his cartooning classes, which flattered the hell out of me.

Fred the Clown: Making Hail While the Nun Shines

This one was originally a companion piece to a strip that passed muster for the collection, Returning a Deaf Ear. I think throwing Knuckles the Malevolent Nun in there was a tad self-indulgent...

Fred the Clown: A Queen, A Knave and a Joker

I'm posting some more FREDs this week than I normally would because needs must. Normal service will shortly be resumed.

Fred the Clown: The Christmas Idiot

This is probably my favourite uncollected Fred strip. I liked it so much I recycled the joke and built an entire 22-page Muppet story around it.

And... this post brings us bang up to date!

Fred the Clown: Come the Resolutions

I did a bunch of topical strips, including various ones with a seasonal theme. This was done for the turn of the new millennium. The colours aren't quite right – the joys of being a trial-and-error colourist, I'm afraid.

Fred the Clown: Infatuation Deliberation

This one is probably best filed under "blah idea, pretty art." It looks fine, but the script doesn't quite get there. Probably why it never got collected.
