Music Review: Mary Chapin Carpenter, "A Place in the World"


In 1996, I was around 20 years old. At that time, I had enough inner turmoil to cause a concussion. I thought that this turmoil would subside throughout my twenties, and by my thirties I would know just who I was and where I was supposed to be. Then Mary Chapin Carpenter comes along with A Place in the World and shatters that illusion.

That's not fair. Honestly, I don't think I gave up believing that I would have things figured out by my thirties until I was 26 or 27, but MCC spoke the truth. ...

Music Review: Patty Griffin, "Children Running Through"

There's a moment about halfway through Patty Griffin's gorgeous album Children Running Through that you realize you may be listening to an artist's signature collection. That moment comes in the piano ballad "Burgundy Shoes" when she sings one word in repetition: "sun." In that one word she infuses every beautiful, warm memory she's ever had. It's chill-inducing.

There's no way getting around it: This is one of those CDs that will make you yearn, so get your yearning caps on. It made my Top 1...
