Moments of Blessings

Lynn Robinson's parents

I went to visit my mom today in the Alzheimer's unit of her assisted living facility.
I reminded her that her birthday was coming up on Sunday.

What followed was so funny...

Mom: How old am I?

Me: You'll be 89 years old on Sunday.

Mom: I AM???!!! (Long pause)

Well how old is HE? (pointing to my dad)

Me: Dad is 94 years old.

Mom: Well!! (Looks shocked.) He wasn't THAT OLD when I married him!

Her response reminds me to simply be present in life. My mom may not remember the young soldier she married when she was only 19, but she still loves the man he is today.

Are Your Spirit Guides Unemployed?

listening to your spirit guides

I laughed out loud recently when I was giving an intuitive reading for a client.
I’ll call her Sue. She was struggling with a particularly difficult relationship with her brother. I was asking my guides, and Sue’s, for some intuitive insight about what would be helpful.

I receive much of my information through images and feelings when giving a reading. Imagine my surprise when I saw a group of her guides and angels standing around her with big signs that read:
UNEMPLOYED!
It struck me immediately how much they wanted to help her with her family difficulties. They explained that Sue (and all of us) have free will. They could only help her if she asked directly for their assistance.
The guides also gave me some tips to share about working with them.
1) Ask for what you want. They told me that many people use their prayers and requests for guidance as a vehicle for complaints. What’s most helpful, they explained, is to say things like,

“Please help me with this situation.”
“I want to invite peace (resolution, calm, etc.) into this area of my life.”
“What could I do to resolve this issue?”

2) Don’t try to figure out HOW what you want will occur. The helpers in the unseen world have countless ways to assist you. They may guide you to a book to read or a mentor to help you. They might provide an intuitive insight that will give you just the right idea to help you out of your conflict. They could also help you attract new sources of revenue. They say that when you ask them to focus on only one solution, you limit all of the miracles they could bring your way.

3) Keep your mind and heart open. In the case of my client, Sue, they gently pointed out that she was feeling very negative about the prospects of change in her particular difficulty. I noticed that much of what she said were things like, “This is a hopeless situation.” “He (her brother) will never change!” Her guide asked me to suggest some other ways of thinking and feeling such as,

“I’m open to new ideas to restore peace into my family.”
“I believe in miracles and I’m inviting one into this situation.”
“I know that my guides and angels are helping me with insight into the resolution of this issue.”

4) Allow space for the miracles to occur. The unseen helpers explained that we (humans) often expect the concerns we pray about to change overnight. When they don’t, we can become bitter and think that our prayers are not being heard or resolved. They asked for us to trust that things were transforming for the better even when we couldn’t see those changes in our present reality.

5) Ask for help through prayer. They said, “When you pray, you are sending your concerns to a loving God who wants to restore you and your life back to joy. Your task is to listen within for the still, quiet voice of guidance, to be at peace and to take action on any wisdom you receive.”

I heard from Sue again several weeks after our reading. She had taken heed of all of the things her guide said. “I really worked at shifting my attitude and focus towards my brother. We hadn’t talked in quite some time. I recently got a conciliatory email from him. I consider that a sign. We have a lot of issues to resolve. But I think that this is a good beginning and an indication that my guides are working behind the scenes on our behalf.”

Four Ways to Become Luckier in the New Year

Learn to become Luckier

I spoke with a client a few months ago who mentioned several times how “unlucky” she was. For example, she was one of the top two candidates for a job that she really wanted and had found out that the other person was offered the position. She provided several other instances where misfortune seemed to dog her. It got me thinking about why some of us seem to experience setbacks more than others.
Can you improve your luck? I believe you can! Here are some of my ideas for making it a propitious and blessed new year:
1) Write About Your Good Luck
You probably have many more lucky things happening in your life than you think. Research suggests that keeping a “good luck journal” helps people become even luckier. Did you win a few dollars on your lottery scratch ticket? Write it down! Did you find a random dollar bill on the street? Ditto! Did the grinding noise on your car turn out to be something minor (and inexpensive)? Did your partner make a cup of coffee for you today? Did you get acknowledged at work for a project well done? All of these things count. Begin to notice all the good that comes to you and, voila, you’ll attract more.
2) Tell Yourself You’re Lucky!
Research shows that people who are lucky tell themselves they’re lucky. It may be a self-fulfilling prophecy, but why not try it? Has your own self-talk been filled with less-than-lucky talk? Do you say things like:

“I’ll never get ahead. The good breaks come to everyone else.”
“With MY luck, this (bad thing) will probably happen.”
“I was born unlucky.”

A lucky person generally expects good fortune. They say things like:

“This obstacle is only temporary. I know things will turn around.”
“I’m a lucky person. Good breaks seem to come my way.”
“I’m always in the right place at the right time.”
“Things have a way of working out for me.”

Dr. Richard Wiseman, author of the book “The Luck Factor,” says that even lucky people experience setbacks in life. The difference, he notes, is that unlike unlucky people, they expect the obstacle to be very short-lived. If you need inspiration, there are many great quotes on luck on the web.
3) Take a Risk
Dr. Wiseman’s research shows that people who try new things are much more open to serendipity, luck and good fortune than those who don’t. This doesn’t mean you have to go bungee jumping off the nearest cliff! It could be as simple as starting a conversation with a stranger, taking a class in an unfamiliar subject, being open to learning a new technique, or trying a new cuisine. He writes, “Lucky people score much higher on openness than unlucky people, and this greater openness can help promote chance opportunities in their lives.”
4) Trust Your Intuition to Improve Your Luck
You often KNOW when you’re about to make a bad decision. But how often do you ignore that niggling gut feeling? Research says we do it quite often and then feel unlucky as a result.

To make a decision using your intuition, simply choose one of the options you have in mind and put it to the test:

What does your body say? The ancient Chinese believed that wisdom resides in the stomach. If your stomach becomes nervous at the thoughts of choosing this option, pay attention. Do you feel anxious or uneasy when you think of this choice? Your body may be telling you this decision doesn’t promote your good fortune!

Write it down — Feeling unlucky in love? Trying to figure out whether a relationship is a “yes” or “no?” Try this: write a letter to your mate saying, “It’s over.” Now stop. How are you feeling? If it’s relief and liberation, this may be the right decision. However, if you’re feeling confused, or something about this doesn’t feel right, then your intuition is telling you to pause. And…before you go further, rip up your note. Whatever you decide to do, face-to-face is the best way to proceed.

Go to a quiet place — It’s hard to get a luck-inducing intuitive hunch if your mind is racing. Try going for a short walk, meditating, or simply pushing yourself away from the desk for a few moments and closing your eyes. Bring to mind the decision you need to make and ask the question, “What do I need to know about this?” You might also use the power of your creative imagination to envision the outcome of this decision. Is it an unlucky outcome or a lucky one? Let your intuition be your guide.

Interestingly, the client that I mentioned at the beginning of this blog, called me for another session last week. She told me that after her reading, she was determined to change her focus, actions and attitudes in order to become luckier. Guess what? The company that she wanted to work for just called her. They had a new position they felt she’d be perfect for. She’s starting next week! Isn’t she lucky?!

The Purpose of Your Life

what-is-your-life-purpose

“What’s my purpose?” “What’s my life mission?” Those are frequent questions I’m asked when I give an intuitive reading to a client.
Many people assume this purpose or mission is a career or job they are here to fulfill. Perhaps there is a “Divine” job assigner handing out life/work missions somewhere in heaven. “You are to be an accountant!” “You over there, your mission is to be an elementary school teacher!” Somehow I don’t think it works that way.

I believe that you come to this life on earth with specific talents and intentions. Through your inner guidance you begin to understand and use these gifts. You come here with an assignment, or a life purpose, if you will. It may be the task of transforming a business, communicating your ideas as a teacher, raising a family, or being a leader in your community. Your task may be a massive one such as raising the level of constructive communication between warring countries, or awakening a consciousness of love and forgiveness in a segment of the population. Whatever purpose your soul has come to unfold, through your Divine intuition you are given guidance and life experiences that will prepare you to fulfill it.

More often our purpose is not a thing we need to do, but a quality we need to develop in order for our soul to unfold and grow to the next level. You may have grown up in an abusive home and learned about empathy and forgiveness. Through a physical disability you might learn to let others help you or, conversely, learn self-reliance. In many sessions with clients I sense a quality that they are here to develop such as resiliency, patience or courage.
Following are some other common life lessons.
This is not meant to be a comprehensive list of life purposes but rather an overview of possibilities. As you read these see if any particularly resonate with you. The purpose of your life may be to:

Invent a service or product that will help and assist humankind.
Heal a relationship with another individual or group of individuals.
Develop a specific characteristic such as love, forgiveness, hope, compassion, patience, courage and faith.
Create works of art and beauty to help heal the souls of others.
Display courage, integrity or honesty during a personal or professional difficulty.
Foster open and non-judgmental communication within a family, neighborhood, office, or in the world at large.
Aid in the spiritual development of others.
Open your heart after an experience of loss and be a model for helping others do the same.
Create a strong family in order to foster the life purpose of yourself, your spouse and/or your children.
Release a focus on fear, worry and anxiety and transform it with the qualities of love, patience and faith.

When you know your life purpose, you tap into a source of power that enables you to achieve your goals more easily and effectively. Susan Jeffers, the author of Feel Your Fear and Do It Anyway, wrote, "We become powerful in the face of our fears when we have a sense that we make a difference in this world."

Today, may you know that you truly make a difference.

Is it Your Intuition or is it Fear?

Intuition or Fear - how to tell the difference

When I’m teaching a seminar on the topic of trusting your intuition, there’s a question I’m frequently asked…
"How do I know it’s my intuition and not fear or wishful thinking?”

The first part of my answer is a little boring. It involves knowing yourself and how your mind works. Let me explain.

Do you know that most of us feel fear or at least mild anxiety when we try anything new? It’s because change takes us out of our comfort zone.

People often resist taking action on the messages from their inner guidance because it often suggests we try something new. We’re afraid we won’t succeed, that people will judge us, that we won’t be happy, or a whole host of other fears.

Most of us have an ideal life we imagine. It’s what our lives look and feel like when we’re successful. Intuition can help guide us there. But how do we know it’s not just "Pollyanna thinking?"
Here are some guidelines to help you in trusting your intuition:

If the inner message contains thoughts of hope, love, encouragement, wisdom, strength and comfort, it’s your intuition speaking.
You feel consistently passionate and excited about something over a period of time.  This is usually a nudge from your intuition to go for it.
You’ve followed your guidance and taken some small steps towards your goal and you find that opportunities begin to open up to you. You’re on the right path!
You’re drawn to a book or overhear a conversation and the words seem as though they were directly spoken to you in answer to your request for guidance.
You begin to feel grateful or have an attitude of appreciation for your life even though you may be going through a difficult time. This is your intuition speaking.
You may feel a sense of peace come over you as you contemplate a right course of action. You may still feel nervous about actually doing this thing but you will feel right about it nonetheless.
Insight that comes quickly into your mind after a prayer or request for guidance is usually the right path to follow.

How do YOU differentiate your fearful thoughts from intuitive guidance? I look forward to reading your answers!

Angel at the Hotel

Angel in a Hotel

Yesterday morning I was in line at a hotel lobby waiting for the front desk person to check me in. I noticed an older woman out of the corner of my eye. She was dressed in a beautiful blue shawl that matched her eyes. Her head was covered in white hair that looked like soft, wispy cotton.

I smiled at her and she began walking directly towards me as if she knew me. Before I could think more about it, she was right in front of me.  She looked up at me, wrapped me in a remarkably warm embrace and joyfully declared, “I LOVE YOU!”

My own mother has Alzheimer’s disease and I immediately recognized the signs of it in this woman. However, the experience has stayed with me during the past 24 hours. It was as if she were the welcome angel at the hotel. Honestly, how delightful it would be if, instead of greeting others with judgment, we could all be free to express our happiness, love and joy to perfect strangers. What a different world it would be.
