Excerpt from Disrupt: Book 3 Divided WorldsChapter 6
There was no mistaking whose machinery was grinding its way up the banks to reach the top of the ship.
Zachary continued to stare upward, not distracted by the Haulage-404’s shadow covering him. Almost all of the androids had left to recharge and the few that remained continued welding the front fins on the ship’s underside. The loss of Sean hadn’t diminished in his thoughts.
Patch crouched. “Your comments to Rupert and Percy have been circulated amongst the androids. They are all concerned that you are affected and may be making incorrect decisions.”
“How many others have died?” Zachary sighed. “In the last three weeks, how many?”
Patch’s blue eyes dimmed. “Seventeen are defunct.”
“Because of the ship?”
“Accidents can happen.”
“Because of me,” muttered Zachary. He shuffled backwards to sit up against the rear tail of the ship. “They’ve all got it into their heads that I’m special and it’s okay to die to satisfy me. Well, it doesn’t satisfy me.”
The droid’s finger tapped a pinned metal sheet. “Every android has a role to serve. Without their masters, they desist from functioning and would risk seizing up all together.”
Zachary scrunched up, bringing his head down to his knees. “Having me gives them a reason to function.”
“Precisely.”
“And you?” He gave the droid a worried look. “Will you keep damaging yourself for me?”
“If it helps, then yes.”
“No more. No more looking after me. I want you to look after the androids. Tell them to be careful. They’re all important to me, especially you,” stressed Zachary.
Patch’s shoulders rolled. “I will do my best, but androids can be stubborn.”
Zachary smiled. “I know.”
Flickers sprinkled from the ship’s side as high-pitched welding drowned out the banging of pipes running along the cavern. Being so close to the ceiling somehow felt safer. Even though the environment contained muck and smelled, the area built by the androids served them well.
Patch cocked his head. “There is something else troubling you.”
Tracing the deep-rooted smudges on his palms, Zachary waited for the welding to cease. “What am I doing, Patch?”
“I do not understand?”
“We’re rushing to get this ship ready to take us out and up into space.” It sounded stupid, even to Zachary. A few weeks ago, and he had sat in his room, gliding his hand through the air and imagining the glory of flight. “What if it doesn’t work?”
“Confidence. Benedict Scott has been working on this project for a lengthy time. He is not one to put effort into a futile task.”
Trusting the mechanic hadn’t let Zachary down yet. The mathematical diagrams and the crisscrossing screens in the Planning Room made the launch seem simple, except it hadn’t got beyond that yet.

Excerpt
The smell of smoke pricked at my nostrils and dragged my concentration away from my math test. I looked sideways and watched it swirl over the floor like a silent, deadly serpent, coil- ing around the desks and feet of my classmates. I listened for the crackle that accompanied the smoke and saw the flames licking along the floorboards. Cold sweat broke out on my neck and ran down my spine, galvanizing me out of my chair.

I tried to call out, but my throat was locked. No one seemed to notice the flames creeping up the walls toward the ceiling. I was shaking so hard I could hardly walk. I pushed between the desks toward Mr. Devon at the front of the class. Surely he could see the flames creeping up the walls by now.

He looked up from his desk. “Nera, please go back to your seat and finish your test,” he said, his brow wrinkled in a frown.

My mouth worked as I tried to get the words out, but they re- fused to budge past my burning throat. Changing track, I turned toward the door in a blind frenzy. I had to get out! Tears were pouring down my cheeks, blurring my vision, and I could hardly breathe for the smoke that surrounded me. I reached for the door handle and jerked my hand away as the hot metal burned my palm.

“Nera, what are you doing?” Mr. Devon hurried toward me.

I slumped to the floor, burned and struggling for breath.

“Brie, get the headmistress!”

I pulled my body into a ball and opened my mouth in a half- hearted attempt to scream. Somehow I knew that the pain in my throat would only get worse if I tried, so I closed it again. The kids crowded around me, oblivious to the flames engulfing the room. Their voices faded away, and I sank deeper into my own little dark hole.

When I resurfaced from my inner retreat, I forced my eyelids open a crack. The voices in the room were loud after the silence of my own mind. I was in the headmistress’s office lying on my side on the old threadbare brown couch, its scratchy fabric prickling my cheek. Dad was kneeling down beside me.

“Nera, honey, are you okay?” he asked as he stroked my hair from my eyes.

“I don’t know,” I whispered, my voice cracking.

GUEST POST
While Player is my most recent release, it is actually my very first book. I wrote in high school when I was only sixteen. Don't worry, I updated it quite a bit and it’s pretty modern now. It was originally titled "Playboy", but since lingo has changed a lot since the nineties, I decided to change it to Player. Revamping the story got me thinking about the old days, so I pulled out some old photos, including this prom picture! The guy in the picture is my friend George. It’s been almost twenty years, and he's still one of my very best friends. He was also the inspiration for Josh, the main character in Player.

My friend George never got into quite as much trouble as Josh does, but trust me; we had our fair share of crazy times. Don’t ever let anyone tell you that the private school kids are better behaved that the public school kids. But that’s another story. In the meantime, reminiscence about the nineties with me and listen to "The Freshman" by The Verve Pipe. If I had to pick a theme song for "Player", this would be it!

Eros sighed and closed his eyes. “I cannot help you. I’m sorry.”
“Yes, you can, Eros. You must. You have no idea what it’s like to need someone like you need the flow of your own blood.”
“David, you will never be able to procreate from this relationship. It’s against the law. My answer is firm. I can’t help you.”
Eros pressed his temples as if attempting to release the pressure of my petition.
“Eros… I’ve done something to prove my love for her. But I see that your support is too much to ask, brother. I shouldn’t have come.”
“Wait. Hear my thoughts on the matter. To be in love with a human…that’s impossible. You know the prohibitions of such acts. The law is impenetrable.” He walked to the bar again to serve himself another glass of wine. “You mentioned you had done something to prove your love. What exactly have you done, Romeo?”
“Do you really have to ask?” I sighed.
“I need an answer if you want my help.”
“I gifted her something of mine.”
“O Mon Dieu…”
“The Star Crestmy lifeit belongs to her now.”
“Merde.” Eros dropped his drink for a second time. “Dahveed, you have done the unthinkable.”
I stared at the shards of glass on the hardwood floor and nodded. “It’s done.”
“You’ve gone insane. It’s suicide!”

He knew he should eat, but he wasn’t actually hungry. Pulling on boots, he strapped on his sword and a dagger. Lomay had promised to procure a sword for Alcander.
Lomay was waiting for him at the base of the stairs. “I have the sword you requested.”
It wasn’t as intricate as the one Emane owned, but it was well crafted. Emane took it by the hilt. “Thank you.”
“I daresay Alcander will lack your gratitude.”
Emane laughed. “I daresay you are correct. And I will love every minute of it.” He winked before strolling outside, testing the weight and balance of the sword.
Alcander stood staring over the cliffs. Throwing open the doors, Emane yelled, “Are you just going to stand there or are we going to fight?”
Alcander gave him a narrow glare.
“Do you practice that pose?” Emane asked, cocking his head to one side. “Because it really is quite stunning.”
Alcander almost smiled—almost. “You’re in a good mood.”
“As are you, considering you are about to be beaten by a Witow.” He threw Alcander his sword.
Alcander caught it neatly. “You honestly think you can beat me?”
“If you are not allowed to use your magic—which you are not, by the way—then, yes.” Emane moved closer, his sword held out in front of him. “The tactics are different, your balance is different, and your strengths will not be your strengths. Hence—” he spread his arms wide, smirking. “The good mood.”
Alcander squinted as he appraised Emane.
“What?”
“Yesterday, this morning—I think I can see it.”
“See what?”
Alcander hesitated, as if it pained him to say it. “You being called as the Protector.”
Emane was stunned. He couldn’t tell if that was an apology or an observation. Either way, he couldn’t deny that it was genuine, which oddly touched him. “You no longer find me…What’s the word you always used? Inadequate?”
Alcander’s mouth quirked to the side. “Don’t push your luck.”
Emane held up his sword. “Let’s go.”
When Emane came within range, Alcander leaped straight into the air, flipping over Emane’s head and landing neatly on the other side of him.
Emane rolled his eyes as he turned to face Alcander. “Fine—you have one strength. Although I still have trouble believing you don’t need magic to do that.”
Alcander shrugged.
“My point is, I have the advantage.” Emane spread his feet into a fighting stance, holding his sword out in front. “Shall we begin?”
Alcander moved forward with the sword. Emane easily knocked it away, sidestepping.
“Ah, not as easy as it looks to be a Witow, is it?” Emane said, struggling against the joy bubbling within him. It felt so good not to be at a disadvantage.
Alcander lunged again. Although he was fast, he didn’t understand where to place the sword and Emane knocked it away with one sure movement and a neat step to the side. Alcander stumbled, looking unsure of himself for the first time since Emane had met him. “I am reconsidering teaching you how to fight, Alcander. I like you much better when you’re not so arrogant.”
“Really?” Alcander said, straightening up. “That’s strange—I find I like your arrogant side better. Less whiny and needy.”
Emane grinned and neatly flicked out with his sword, disarming Alcander. The sword spun across the courtyard.
Alcander moved his hand up, Emane recognized it immediately from his training with Aleric. He blocked the spell with his sword. The magic rebounded, knocking Alcander flat on his back.
“Alcander, that is cheating.”
Alcander actually smiled. “Yes,” he grunted, pushing himself to his feet. “I can definitely see it. I like you much better this way.” Retrieving his sword, Alcander tried to imitate Emane’s stance. “Are you going to teach me? Or shall we stand here and banter all day?”

Excerpt:
Every one of my thoughts led to her. The only thing my mind could see was her face—and that should belong to me along with the rest of her.
Many times my friend, Eros, god of love and lust, had recounted stories of lovers. At the time, I was ignorant of the meaning of the word “love” and far more ignorant of the words he spoke in reference to humans: “Their prayers seek me out asking to pierce my arrows through the hearts of their unrequited halves because it is so great—their love—that they fall physically ill.”
I judged their request ridiculous. But now, I was the one to be ridiculed by my own wits. I had become a hypocrite to my own views.
As I thought more about it, I knew that Eros held my answer. I couldn’t waste any more time.
I parked the car under an ebony tree and ran inside the house.
“Mother!”
My mother appeared at the top of the staircase.
“What’s wrong?”
“I have to leave for a few days, but I need you to do something for me while I’m away.”
“But why? Where are you off to?”
“Please don’t question me. I need your help.”
