Just Ella

Just Ella by Annette K. Larsen

Book Summary:

A Proper Romance

Ariella was only looking for a distraction, something to break up the monotony of palace life. What she found was a young man willing to overlook her title and show her a new and vibrant way of life. But when her growing feelings for Gavin spiral out of control and clash with the expectations of her station, she will discover that the consequences of her curiosity are far more severe than she’d imagined.

I watched in helpless horror as two guards hauled Gavin to his feet and dragged him from the room. My voice was frozen, unable to protest as another guard took hold of my arm, leading me upstairs. From the confines of my room, I stared into the darkness beyond my window, hoping to catch one more glimpse of Gavin. He was gone, and I wondered if he would have been better off if he had never met me.

I write clean romance. Why? Because that’s what I love to read, but over the years I’ve discovered it’s quite a challenge to find good clean romance. I believe it’s a genre that many people are looking for and too few authors are writing. My first novel, Just Ella, took me many years to write because I wanted it to be more than just a cutesy love story. I wanted it to have depth, to feel genuine. Hopefully I succeeded, but you’ll have to be the judge.

Praise for Just Ella

“I fell in love with this book. Treat yourself to something wonderful. You can’t go wrong with Just Ella!” ~Inspired Kathy from I Am A Reader, Not A Writer

“By far one of the best romance novels I’ve ever read. Pulls you in with great, likable characters and keeps you going with a sweet and exciting love story–plus a good plot to give it even more substance. Full of those tender moments you want to go back and read again, plus exciting moments, clever humor, and some suspense as well.” ~Jana Miller

“Annette Larsen writes a love story that takes time, is complicated, and yet still sweeps you up in the romance (without the cheese, thank you). It’s compelling and emotional and sweet and you will love every page.” ~Kimi

Excerpt

“Now, wait just a minute. You can’t just plunge into a pool of water.”

“Why not?” I should have said something cleverer, but I felt a bit scatterbrained, all thoughts having fled when Gavin’s arm went around me.

He made a noise of exasperation. “Why not, she asks. Because, Princess, what’s going to happen when you show up for your lessons completely drenched? Or, what happens when we both show up on the palace grounds completely drenched? I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to have to explain that to anybody.”

Unfortunately, he had a point. “Don’t call me Princess.” He had been so relaxed today, so willing to be himself and let me be myself. I hated that he felt the need to remind me of my rank. I was tempted to be angry and walk away but I also wanted to see how long he would keep his arms around me. Simply out of curiosity, of course.

annette Author Annette K. Larsen

I was born in Utah, but grew up in Flagstaff Arizona and St. Louis Missouri, the fifth of seven children. I attended college at Southern Virginia University and Brigham Young University where I studied English and Theater. I now live in Idaho with my husband and four children.

I have Charlotte Bronte to thank for the courage to write novels. After being bombarded with assigned reading about women who justified abandoning either their families or their principles in the name of love, I had the great fortune of reading Jane Eyre. And that was it: finally a heroine who understood that being moral and making the right choice was hard, and sometimes it hurt, but it was still worth it. After rereading it several years later, I realized that if I wanted more books to exist with the kinds of heroines I admired, then I might as well write a few myself. My books are about women who face hard choices, who face pain and rejection and often have to sacrifice what they want for what is right. The consequences are often difficult or unpleasant, but it the end, doing what’s right will always be worth it.

I believe there is no substitute for good writing or good chocolate. Fortunately, one often leads to the other.

cerberusCerberus: Book 1 of Parish by P.K. Gallagher Paranormal YA Fantasy   For Kaeden Parish, life in Solace has always followed certain rules—everything makes sense, everything can be planned for, and everything is as it seems. Unfortunately, the secret harbored by his gorgeous, albeit guarded girlfriend is about to shatter all of that. After a successful attack on his life opens his eyes to a world of war, shadows, and supernatural creatures—a world he didn’t plan for—Kaeden finds himself resembling the sort of monster he has always feared. As he desperately struggles to resist a new temptation, danger draws ever nearer, threatening the ones he loves most. A prophecy tells of a final battle and great destruction, and Kaeden must decide which side he is on, a choice that could mean the end of the world. In Book 1 of the Solace Series, P.K. Gallagher pulls readers into a realm where good and evil are at war, and the outcome of it all rests on one young man’s decision to either go and live…or stay and die. AboutUsSeperator

Keeping Procrastination at Bay

I’m sure this isn’t an ailment that is exclusive to writers, because I’m pretty sure I caught this insidious, infection disease from my husband. I never used to be a procrastinator. In fact, I very much like to get things done early so I don’t have to worry about them. So what happened?

I honestly have no clue, but now, I can procrastinate with the best of them. It doesn’t matter whether it is folding a load of laundry, running to the store, or writing a new chapter. I’m an equal opportunity procrastinator. Except, maybe its more like I’m a distractinator, because I don’t actually put off writing like I put off housework. (Can you blame me? Let’s be honest here.)

When it comes to writing, I look forward to it. I set aside time for it each day not just because it needs to get done, but because I do honestly enjoy it. Yet somehow, more often than not, that designated writing time will pass, I look at my file, and I haven’t written anything. I started to pay more attention to my habits, and what I found was that I wasn’t procrastinating, I was just getting… Oh, a shiny!… wait sorry, I got distracted. And that is exactly why I wasn’t writing.

Here’s the schedule I had set for myself. From 7am until 8am I get the kids ready for school, and wake up, check emails, etc. (It’s a process.) From 8 until 9 I try to delve into my critique group, evaluating new chapters and reading posts on various forums. And then, from 9 until 11, I write. Or at least I’m supposed to. But this is where my day falls apart.

I might write from 9 until 9:20, but then maybe an email comes in. As soon as I see the notification, I check it and answer it if necessary. I should immediately get back to writing, but instead I figure while I’m already taking a break I should check facebook. There’s always something to respond to there, so that takes time. And I have to check to see if anyone has sent me a new note on the critique group. Then I get back to …I’m sorry, let me pause writing this because an email just came in. You get the idea. So how did I fix it? I found an app called Freedom. I set it for however long I want to write for- usually 90 to 120 minutes, and for that time it blocks my internet. They also have a version that just blocks specified sites so you can leave your net on for research or whatever, but I find that completely blocking the net works for me, that way I keep momentum. If I come across something I need to research I just put a [look up/verify] and keep on writing. Then, when I’m done I search the manuscript for [ and I can find whatever I need to find once my writing block is over.

When my time is up, I let myself go ahead and check my boards and sites and messages, and then either do something else—like that dreaded housework—or set myself up for another block. The added benefit to this is that not only am I getting more housework done because I know my eyes need a short break between writing sprints, I’m getting more writing done overall.

So what about you? How do you keep procrastination at bay?

One thing you need to know about LJ Clarkson is that she tells BIG lies. She tells everyone that she gave up her career as an Environmental Engineer and Project Manager to write full time. But that’s not entirely true. Ten percent of the time she sleeps in. Fifteen percent of her day, she spends surfing the internet, researching for new books and her business. Ok, fine. Two percent is for research. But she’s only admitting it so she doesn’t end up like Boldrick. For eighteen point seven five percent of her day, she runs her promotional and support site for authors, called Indicated (www.indicated.com.au). The rest of her time involves writing, reading, watching movies and TV, walking her dogs and falling asleep whenever her boyfriend talks technical computer lingo. Truthfully, she hates early mornings, mondays, grammar (yuck! just ask her poor editor!), broccoli and cleaning. If you would like to drop her and line and let her know what you think of the book, she would love to hear from you. Just not before 8:30am in the morning.

excerpt2

The pressure of death motivated Isabelle’s hand to fly across the page. Except her hand shook so badly, it traced a wobbly outline of the dragon’s body. If she didn’t calm down, his portrait would look more like a squiggle drawn by a toddler. And she didn’t want to offend him. Not when Boldrick had bragged about her drawing skills. Taking deep breaths worked wonders to steady her hand.

Using whisked strokes, she filled in his wings and highlighted his muscular arms. Next she shaped his speared tail.

“Roasting you for two hours will do the trick.” Ramala’s tail prodded logs deeper into the fire. “Your flesh shall be just the way I like it: juicy and tender, not crispy and burnt.”

Pressure in her chest squeezed the breath right out of her. Charcoal tore across the sheet, shading his angular face and horns.

The dragon sharpened his sapphire-blue talons against a rock.

The hideous noise stirred shivers in Isabelle.

Ramala leaned his neck forward to sniff her. “I will marinade you in apple sauce.”

Beads of sweat from her brow dripped onto the paper, smudging the charcoal on his eyes. Dabbing it with her cape only made it worse.

Maybe Ramala played on her fear to meddle with her concentration, and that was how he’d never been beaten in a challenge. Well then, he might have dinosaur-sized jaws capable of crushing her, but she refused to let him intimidate her.

I graduated from college in Texas with a fine arts degree, and then freelanced as an art director at a graphic design firm for eight years. I dreamed of working in children’s books, so I moved to New York City and became associate art director in Scholastic trade books, where I designed books for children and worked with editors and illustrators. It was a great job.

I illustrated my first published children’s book in 1992 and soon began illustrating full time. I began completing manuscripts and mailing them out to publishers in the early 1990s. In 1996, I sold my first two manuscripts — Boo Who? A Spooky Lift-the-Flap Book (Scholastic) and Pen Pals (Grosset & Dunlap). Yippee!

Now I write full time and have written and/or illustrated over 130 children’s books. Creating books that entertain, inform, and interest children (and me) is a fabulous job that I truly love.

Curse of the Broomstaff Recommendation!

Curse of the Broomstaff by Tyler Whitesides
Series: Janitors #3
on 9/10/13
Genres: Middle-Grade Fiction
Pages: 343
Format: Paperback
AmazonBarnes & NobleGoodreads
five-stars
A secret society of Janitors with wizard-like powers continue their battle, and now, the stakes are even higher. The Bureau of Educational Maintenance is after Alan Zumbro and this time they mean business - deadly business. Spencer, Daisy, and their little team of rebels must find the source of all magical Glop and destroy it before it can destroy the world as we know it. No small task with the BEM and their monster toxites at their heels. It's a wild and dangerous ride as they follow the trail of clues all the way to the hiding place of the mysterious aurans: guardians of a secret landfill. What they discover there will change the way Spencer sees himself, not to mention the fate of the rebels.

Do you ever read something and think, ‘I really wish this book had been around when _____.’?

I wish this series had been around when I was in grade/middle school.

It is so much fun and I am pretty sure I would have been obsessed.

Reading this series has made me feel like a kid again.

The concept of this series is fun and unique, it’s the kind of think I could imagine a middle grade student (with an overly active imagination) day dreaming up while bored in school, only of course you would have to add in a very well versed writing style that probably took many years to hone because it is seamless, has great flow and is filled with a very unique and entertaining style. Something about this book seems so relevant to current times with the trouble so many school systems are going through but it is subtle. It is the kind of book I can imagine making a kid care a bit more about school if they were losing interest or had started struggling. I was hooked right from the

‘Message from the Author’.

Here is a snippet of that message:

“Dear Reader,

Here it is; the third installment in the JANITORS series.

And I must admit, this is definitely the trashiest book I’ve ever written.

No, literally. This book is full of garbage.

This time, our young heroes must venture deep into an enchanted landfill.

They will battle heaps of living garbage and hike through distorted trashscapes

as they discover a mysterious group of kids living among the refuse,

harboring a centuries-old secret that could save the future of education.”

This is kind of book that catches your attention and sneaks in ways to make you care more about the things parents spend ages fighting for a kid to care about. They are fighting trash, trying to save the school and on top of it all you get so caught up enjoying yourself that you don’t think about the concept as much as you end up just having fun going along for the ride and following these wonderful characters.

It’s a fantastically engaging read and definitely deserving of a full 5 stars!

The act ended with Hyde grabbing hold of a scantily dressed Lucy and pulling her into his arms. Then the lights on the stage were extinguished, and the silent crowd suddenly burst into thunderous applause—even some of the cast was clapping. Rebecca couldn’t help but notice Steve was watching the fanfare with a frown, especially when Fernando, dressed for the next scene as the butler, clapped Justyn on the back with undisguised approval and pride. Rebecca had the distinct feeling Steve was plotting something sinister and definitely Hyde-worthy.

From that point on, Justyn scarcely had a moment out of the spotlight. Rebecca didn’t even get a chance to tell him how fabulous he was. It felt as though the show had only begun when Rebecca found herself decked out in the splendid Victorian wedding gown signaling the final act was about to begin. The dress came complete with realistic bell sleeves, an excessive bustle, and a long, flowing trail embroidered with delicate lace. The elaborate wardrobes and happy wedding guests gave the audience the illusion that it might be a happy ending after all, but for Dr. Jekyll and Emma, that wasn’t meant to be. As soon as the reverend began to recite the vows, Hyde made his final deadly appearance.

At the beginning of the scene, it was sweet and romantic. Justyn started out holding her hand, looking happy, almost ecstatic to be with his true love. Then he suddenly started to sway. Tom, in his role of John, the best man, tried to steady him, but there wasn’t anything he could do to stop the transformation. Dr. Jekyll doubles over in agony and tries to run before Emma can see him change into a monster. Justyn was supposed to head toward the back of the stage where Rebecca would pursue him and eventually become Hyde’s captive. But they should have known no opening night could ever go exactly as planned, especially when it was obvious at least half the cast was out to get them.

Just as Justyn stumbled across the stage, Steve, who was blending in with the other guests on the sidelines, stuck out his foot. It was doubtful anyone else observed the sabotage, aside from Petya, who was smirking at her husband’s side. But Rebecca was at the perfect vantage point to see the intentional attack. Unfortunately, Justyn was so wrapped up in the role he didn’t notice the danger, especially since his loose hair was dangling in front of his eyes. Before Rebecca could cry out a warning, Justyn’s foot was caught in the snare. With a grunt, he tumbled off the side of the stage. Even over the background music and the gasps from the audience, Rebecca heard the loud thump as he hit the ground. She raised her hands to her mouth and couldn’t help but scream.HydeAmber
