Best parenting book ever
Parenting: Illustrated with Crappy Pictures by Amber Dusick Published by Harlequin on March 26th 2013
Genres: Humor, Parenting
Pages: 224
Format: Hardcover
Amazon • Barnes & Noble • Goodreads
Of course you love being a parent. But sometimes, it just sucks. I know. I'm Amber Dusick and I started my blog Parenting: Illustrated with Crappy Pictures because I needed a place to vent about the funny (and frustrating) day-to-day things that happened to me as a parent. Turns out, poop is hilarious! At least when you're not the one wiping it up.
This book won't make your frustrating moments any less crappy. But these stories about my Crappy Baby, Crappy Boy and my husband, Crappy Papa, will hopefully make you laugh. Because you're not alone. And sometimes the crappiest moments make the best memories. Parenting is wonderful! And also, well, you know.
This hysterically blunt novel about parenthood and the antics of small children had me laughing so loud I am surprised my neighbors didn’t complain. The best part of this book is that it is so on the mark with everything it says. It is funny mostly because if you are a parent or someone (like me) who takes over for parents for a few days when they are at wits end, you can relate to each and every one of the examples that to most people without experience with kids would seem crazy but to parents or parent sympathizers seems, well, normal actually.
I haven’t been around babies for a few years now but before my move to WA I has a number of friends in all sorts of age ranges with babies. This is not to say I ever had it as bad as they did, the whole reason I stepped in for a few days at a time when they needed me was because I could see just how bad they needed it and sometimes just having someone to watch over your kid for a few days while you sleep in your own bed is a welcomed break. I was that break so I got the crazy antics but I got the luxury of only having minor sleep deprivation because I only had to last a few days or weeks, whereas they had to last years.
This novel has relatable content for parents that isn’t bogged down my a serious demeanor. It feels a lot like a mom just talking to a friend of hers who is also a mom about the wonderful but ridiculous experience taking care of a kid can be. You get the extremes of sleeplessness and exhaustion from following a small person’s every move for years but you also get the wonderful moments that you wouldn’t trade for anything and the book covers both. It is the most realistic parenting book I have seen and the one with the best humor. It makes light of what through experience the author knows to be a strain for anyone while still covering topics that are helpful even if only to show that moms out there aren’t alone.
Overall, a witty and heartfelt novel about the good and bad of parenting. I think this will be my new baby shower gift to every expectant mother I know in the near future. It shows why it is so hard without being a downer and also gives a firm grasp of why it is so worth it. I mean this seriously, go out and buy it for every expecting mother you know, then you can say you gave them fair warning. :p

Unstoppable Book Blitz and Giveaway!
Unstoppable by S.R. Johannes
After everything that has happened, Grace goes to the Everglades to live with her grandmother, Birdee. Even though she is now home-schooled by her bird-obsessed grandmother, the move gives Grace time to relax. She learns to scuba dive and starts boating with old man Rex, Birdee’s casual friend/boyfriend.
One day while out in the marshes of the Everglades, Grace rescues an abused Florida panther, currently on the endangered list. The more she dives into the animal’s horrific condition, the more she ventures into the underground world of the roadside zoos that run rampant in Florida with a total disregard for the law. Eventually, she stumbles upon one large roadside zoo filled with a variety of endangered and illegal animals.
Before she can gather evidence and report her findings to the authorities, she is kidnapped by the ruthless owner and dragged deep into the Everglades for a hunting challenge. Only this time, Grace is the prey.
During a sick game of cat and mouse, Grace is offered one chance at survival. With a one-hour head start and very little supplies, time and skill are now all that stands between the hunter and the hunted.

Cecilia Gray lives in the San Francisco Bay Area where she reads, writes and breaks for food. She also pens her biographies in the third person. Like this. As if to trick you into thinking someone else wrote it because she is important. Alas, this is not the case.
Cecilia has been praised for “instilling a warmth and weight into her characters” (Romancing The Book Reviews) and her books have been praised for being “well-written, original, realistic and witty” (Quills & Zebras Reviews).
Her latest series of young-adult contemporary Jane Austen retellings was named a What’s Hot pick (RT Book Reviews magazine) and is a Best of 2012 pick (Kirkus Reviews) where it was praised for being a “unique twist on a classic” and offering “a compelling mix of action, drama and love.”

All alone in a foreign country, Sasha isn’t sure what to do so she hits the streets, trying to get her bearings…
Brussels, Belgium
I tighten my scarf, shove my hands in my pockets, and quicken my pace.
I challenge myself to make it downtown without peeking at the map. The residential townhouses give way to a bustling business district with dimly lit storefronts. Pockets of bundled pedestrians lazily stroll by.
It’s unreal to clop down a cobblestone street in a foreign city like a real spy. Since getting wind of the new assignment, I’ve watched countless espionage movies and read an endless supply of intrigue books—about other people.
Now, this is me. These are my sneakers squeaking against stone damp from tonight’s rain. My breath fogging the chilly air. My adventure in full swing.
Who needs boring dinner conversation when I have this?
When the suit first laid out the CIA reassignment, I’d assumed I’d be based in Baghdad or London. I wasn’t psyched when I got Brussels. I kept thinking, how am I supposed to flex my mojo in the city of Brussels when nine times out of ten, Brussels makes you think of sprouts? The city’s claim to fame is a statue of a naked kid pissing into a fountain. Seriously. And a comic strip about tiny blue creatures who live in ‘shrooms. Again—seriously.
But then I learned Brussels is home to the European Union. Headquarters for Europe’s political shenanigans.
If I play my cards right, Brussels could be home. My own apartment. One door instead of the revolving door of well-meaning foster parents, overeager research scientists, and partners who would rather not double as a babysitter. It’s all led here.
This will make it worth it.
~~~~~
Stella Artois Restaurant and Bar, Brussels, Belgium
The wooden door swings into a smoky tavern with a wall-length bar backed by hundreds of colorful bottles stacked to the ceiling. Clinking glass and hushed conversation muffles a peppy rock beat. Cigarette smoke cloaks the room and settles into the fibers of my clothes and hair. A shiver of excitement rocks through my body. My new life, my awesome mission, and now my first bar, thanks to Belgium’s low drinking age. Chelsea would freak if she knew.
The bartender doesn’t seem old enough to drink beer in America, either. He wears a white V-neck tee that sets off a deep tan and a head of close-cropped black curls. He wipes down the counter in slow circles.
Exit—the porthole door behind him that likely leads to a kitchen with an alley door. Weapon—any of the glass bottles behind the bartender, broken in half.
He glances up—chiseled jaw, pronounced nose—and holds my gaze from across the bar with dark eyes that scrutinize the newcomer. I amble up to the counter and take a seat on a red stool.
Tied Book Blast!
Normal people don’t believe their nightmares stalk them. They don’t fall in love with boys who don’t exist, either.
Seventeen-year-old Layla Labelle, though, is far from normal. Her delusions walk the earth. Her hallucinations hunt her, and her skin heats to a burn every time her anger flares.
Or is that all in her head?
Layla doesn’t know what to believe any more because if none of that’s true, Max MacLarnon must be an illusion, and her heart must still be broken.
No matter how much she wants to believe Max is real, doing so would mean everything else is, too. How, then, is that possible?
The answers lie in an age-old legend the supernatural aren’t prepared to reveal, and with a curse that could tear Layla and Max apart forever—if it doesn’t kill them both first.
In TIED, book one in the Fire Born trilogy, learning the truth will mean fighting an arsenal of demons, and being with Max will put Layla on a path toward her own destruction.
Just how far will Layla go to protect the one she loves?
The answer may never be far enough … away.
My window opened easily. The same way it had so many times before. Climbing out on the ledge, I found the ground empty and dropped from the second floor—a jump I’d made a hundred times. In another life.
My feet sunk into the sand, and I followed the well-worn pathway through the dunes. Even the strong evening winds hadn’t misshaped the deep gully. The ocean’s breeze lashed at my hair as the moonlight glinted off the water’s surface. Seagulls flew up from their nesting grounds. They should have recognized me, since I’d been wandering at night for so long. Wrapping my arms around my knees to block the slight chill, I settled in the sand, and the birds quieted in a tight huddle, the wind blowing their feathers in awkward angles.
My gaze fell on a figure standing beyond the dunes edge, a shadow hidden within the darkness. My pulse quickened, but I didn’t move. Another trick—an illusion. Weary of the games my mind continued to play, I bit back tears and the catch in my throat. I should have been immune to them—the hallucinations—the way they haunted me and followed me, but I wasn’t.
Forcing myself to blink, I turned my head away. The visions had grown worse as I’d become older. I’d tried to convince myself they were nightmares—or weird dreams. Hoped for years they were, but only people who sleep dream.
Unable, or unwilling to stop myself, I glanced back over my shoulder, thoughts flooding my brain. Memories I knew couldn’t be memories but I cherished all the same. For years I’d tried to shake them away. To make myself forget.
I couldn’t.#**#**#
A stone raps against my bedroom window. I creep over and peer through the blinds.
“You’re late.” I lean out over the sill, grinning at the boy staring up at me.
“Come on, let’s go before she comes,” he says.
I climb onto the window ledge. “Be nice. She’s my friend.”
“Okay. Jump.” He waves at me to go faster.
“Move, and I will.”
He takes one casual step to the side.The jump isn’t too high; I make it all the time.
He grabs my hand when I land beside him in the soft sand. “Ready?”
I nod.
“One, two …”
“I’m going to tell!” Benny runs across my yard toward me, her blonde pigtails flapping in the wind. “You’re not allowed to talk to that boy, Layla! Your mom said!”
Max tightens his grip on my hand.
“Shut up, Benny! I’m old enough.”
“You’re only nine. Don’t go! ”
“Three!” Max and I leave the ground.
“You’re going to get in so much trouble.” Benny’s yell rings in the distance.
Our feet touch down in the wet grass of the Otherworld, icy sea air whipping at my face.
“Hopefully, she won’t follow us again.” Max lets go of my hand.
“She won’t. I told her not to.” I lead the way down the cliff face to the ocean.
“She never listens to you.”
Format: eBook
Amazon • Barnes & Noble • Goodreads
I thought the worst of my reaper training was behind me… turns out I was wrong. Dead wrong.
Molly Bartolucci has done a lot of growing up but after being accused of using illegal magic at her school for necromancers, reaper-in-training Molly is treading lightly. As the destined leader of Anubis’s Chosen, she needs to study hard, train harder, and stay out of trouble.
Uh, right.
It doesn’t help that she’s feeling more than academic about her melt-your-bones hot reaping instructor, Rath. And if her relationship drama isn’t enough to drive her over the edge, she has to deal with mother issues, nosy little sisters, suspicious friends, and an unnamed force stalking her at school.
Then her family is attacked, and her bio-dad ends up comatose in the hospital. Now, Molly has to uncover who’s trying to hurt her loved ones—and all without the help of Anubis.(
What would you like for readers to take away from your novel/novels?
I write to entertain. I want the readers to enjoy the ride and get lost in the world I have created.
What’s your favorite way to procrastinate?
When I really want to procrastinate, I love watching episodes of Supernatural and Arrow. But most of all, I love finding things to do in the fall weather.
Besides writing, what do you like to do in your free time?
I like to crochet as well as decorate our house. I also love reading and spending time with my family.
Tell us something about your book that we wouldn’t know just by reading the blurb.
Molly has done some growing up. Things between her and Rath are heating up and some secrets are revealed!
Is there one book that has had an impact on not only your writing, but on you personally?
“A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius” by Dave Eggers made me think about things not only as a writer but also as a person. It was a wonderful mix of humor and poignancy that stayed with me long after I finished the book.
Thank you for stopping by!
“Logan please stop here. Just for a minute, please!”
Logan nodded he studied Rainer speculatively, but without question he pulled into one of the parallel spots on the back side of the cemetery.
“Do you want me to come with you?” Logan offered.
Rainer knew that whatever he wanted is what Logan would do. Even if they never went to Coriolis and were fired for it, he would be there for Rainer. Certain that he’d never deserve a friend like Logan Haydenshire, Rainer wanted to be alone. He tried to give Logan a reassuring smile but wasn’t able.
“I’ll just be a minute.”
“Take as long as you need, man.” With that, Rainer threw open the door and took off in a heated sprint towards the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He rushed over the hallowed ground. Rainer ran faster not certain his feet were hitting the ground as he moved behind the largest of the monuments and headed west.
He hated that he knew how to find the spot so readily. He halted and walked as a funeral was taking place and respect was clearly something Rainer needed to work on. He felt his throat close and tears threatened to burn his eyes. He nodded his head as he passed Cal Haydenshire’s cross grave marker. Keeping his head bowed he moved to the monument at the end of one of the endless rows and fell to the ground. He summoned instantly. He watched as his father’s name and birth and death dates appeared in the marble. His parents had been buried in Arlington because of the sheer number of Non-Gifted lives they’d saved in their quest to make certain that the Gifted didn’t abuse the Non-Gifted with their powers.
Rainer moved slightly and turned his cupped hand outward. He watched his mother’s name appear. He sat there staring at the letters and numbers, lost for several minutes. He wasn’t certain why he’d needed to come so badly, not certain what to say, or how this was going to fix anything at all. He just sat staring at the marble headstone. The granite representation of all he’d lost and all he’d given up, of what had made him who he was, the devastation that had defined him.
He knew his father would’ve been just as disappointed and horrified at what he’d done to Emily, as Governor Haydenshire. Rainer felt sick.
“I’m sorry,” he blinked back tears. “I just don’t know how I screwed up so badly. I just…” Rainer wiped away the hot tears that flowed down his face. “I’ll never be as good as you.” He shouted the thought that had haunted him since he’d watched his father’s casket lowered into the ground at fourteen years old. He pled to the pitiless granite and the merciless air around him.
“I don’t think that’s true, man.” Rainer spun around. He gasped as his heart flew. Logan, worried about Rainer, had followed him. “And I don’t think he expected you to be perfect, Rainer.” Logan sank to the ground beside Rainer. “I mean, at least Em’s not going to end up in jail because of a belly shot.”
Logan turned back to the monument and bowed his head.
“S’up, Governor Lawson?” He offered. Rainer felt a smile form on his face. “He’s a good guy, sir. Try not to be too hard on him. He was only doing what Emily asked him to, and you were married, you know women will always get you into trouble.” He vowed to the ether.
Rainer found it very odd to be sitting in front of his parents’ graves, with all that had happened, laughing. After another few minutes, Logan stood and offered Rainer his hand.
“Come on. Let’s try and clean up the mess we’ve made.” Rainer accepted Logan’s help up.
“Bye, Dad.” He choked and let his hands run along the cold granite. “I will fix this. I swear to you.” He turned to follow Logan back to the car with renewed fire burning inside of him.
Tristan beamed. “You’ve grown so much this past year. There was a time you would never be able to say something like that.”
Natalie grew taller under his gaze. “I get my strength from you.”
“No, you don’t. You’re Nat. You’re strong all by yourself, princess.”
“I like it when you call me that.” Natalie said softly.
“It’s true. You’re even better than a Disney princess. You’re the Miller princess.”
Natalie’s heart leapt and tumbled in a way that was special; new. “I’m yours?”
“Uh-huh and there’s something I want to give you. I wanted to wait until it was special, but you look like you could use some cheering up.”
“Give me?” Natalie was surprised. “Did you get me a present?” She bounced lightly.
Tristan fished around inside his pocket and finally pulled out a small box; it was a small velvet box. Natalie saw ones like it on television all the time and in her sister’s bedroom. Her head spun, wondering what could possibly be inside such a box.
“I wanted to do this at that fancy restaurant last week, but it was still on layaway.” Tristan flipped the box open.
Natalie gawked at the silver ring. It was a simple band and crusted on all sides with jagged cuts of gems in a rainbow of colors. She never knew anything could be so beautiful or that anyone would ever think enough to get something so nice just for her.
“I know it seems kind of dorky, but when I saw it, I thought, that’d be perfect for Nat. I could see how it’d look on your finger. You never ask for anything. You just do this incredible, responsible job and you never ask for anything nice. The way you were just now with your dad…I guess I never saw how much responsibility you really have. I need you to know, Nat, I’m serious about this thing. Us.”
